TS: Dozens of suspect doctors licensed

Finland’s health watchdog Valvira faces claims that it has granted licenses to numerous foreign doctors without proper checks, according to the newspaper Turun Sanomat.

According to the investigation request, Valvira failed to verify the origins of foreign doctors’ diplomas, and the credentials of dozens of physicians are suspected to be fake. Valvira has denied claims that it failed to check dozens of foreign doctors’ credentials.

Helsinki police are to investigate the latest fake doctor scandal. The investigation was triggered by a request from a Valvira employee.

The police say that the employee suspects that Valvira has accepted suspect diplomas as genuine. Valvira denied the charges, and said that the investigation has not yet turned up any more forgeries.

Valvira, the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health, launched its own inquiry last autumn in the wake of a scandal involving two bogus doctors. This month, the authority published a report which stated that no falsified diplomas had been found.

Last autumn, the police started a preliminary investigation into possible misconduct in office by Valvira officials.

The latest police investigation was reported first by Turun Sanomat.
