Disruptions to scheduled train traffic

Trains were running behind schedule on the main track on Tuesday after a freight car swerved off the rails in Riihimäki, some 70 kilometres north of Helsinki.

The car blocked the main track, leaving only one other track free for traffic heading north and south, according to state railways VR.

Finnish Transport Agency officials estimate that the rail would be cleared by 4.00 pm.

By late morning, long distance trains were again stopping at Riihimäki as usual.  R- and H-commuter trains were running only from Helsinki to Hyvinkää.

Delays between 20-60 minutes were still expected and there was still the possibility that some trains would be cancelled.

The detailed cars were not carrying any substances that pose a threat to the environment.
