Independence Day reminder

Friday is a national holiday in Finland as the country celebrates the anniversary of Finland’s Declaration of Independence from Imperial Russia in 1917. Most shops are closed, and public transport runs to Sunday timetables.

Retailers have to close for the day, unless their shop is especially small, located in a sparsely-populated district, or smaller than 400 square metres and attached to a petrol station. Alko stores close at 6pm on Thursday and reopen on Saturday 7 December at 9am.

Public transport is running to Sunday timetables. The State Railways VR has added some extra services and cancelled other long-distance trains, while trains run to a Friday schedule on Thursday 5 December.

In Helsinki, public transport runs to a Sunday timetable with some additional bus services. There will be some diversions between 4:30pm and 5:30pm as a result of the students’ procession from Hietaniemi cemetery to Senate Square.
