Preschool to become compulsory?

Finnish children could soon be compelled to attend preschool before they start their official education at the age of seven, if the government implements recommendations in a new report.

Nearly all six-year-olds currently attend preschool already, and researchers now say they want to give all children an early start to their educations.

"Studies have shown that strong support and reinforcement at an early stage helps narrow differences in learning outcomes later," said Education Minister Krista Kiuru.

The minister received a report about early education on Wednesday.
