Heinäluoma elected speaker of parliament

Parliament has elected Social Democrat MP Eero Heinäluoma as speaker. He received 168 votes out of a total of 200 MPs.

Deputy speakers were also elected, with Pekka Ravi of the National Coalition getting the first deputy speaker spot and Anssi Joutsenlahti of the True Finns continuing as second deputy speaker.

Heinäluoma rose through through the blue-collar SAK trade union confederation before becoming SDP party secretary in 2002. He then became party chair in 2005, before resigning in 2008. He was elected leader of the SDP's parliamentary group in 2010.

He served as Finance Minister in the last two years of the Vanhanen government, before the Social Democrats went into opposition after the 2007 election.
