Mobile Phone Positioning Less Reliable than Thought

Finding people who are lost on the basis of the signals of their mobile telephones, fails in one of three cases. Osmo Malmi, head of communication at the call-in emergency centre of Southeast Finland said in an interview with the Lappeenranta newspaper Etelä Saimaa, the error in location could reach as high as five kilometres in rural areas.

In suburban areas, three-kilometre accuracy can be achieved, and in centres of cities, the margin of error is 400 metres.

Cell phone positioning is especially inaccurate in large lake areas such as the Saimaa waterway, where base stations are fewer.

In light of present information, Malmi says that when calling the emergency number, it is important for the caller to be as aware as possible of his or her location. Currently, at least 60 percent of emergency calls in Finland are made by mobile telephones. YLE24
