Cold Causing Rail Delays

Rail transport is experiencing delays on Wednesday on account of the severe cold weather and a shortage of equipment. The rail transport centre said that long distance trains are delayed by up to an hour.

Commuter trains in the Helsinki region are late by around 5-15 minutes. Some services have also been cancelled, including all commuter trains between Helsinki and Saunakallio.

The cold has affected braking systems especially badly. There have also been problems on the tracks themselves, where points have stuck in places.

Finnish Railways’ problems are not expected to ease soon, as the current severe cold is expected to last until the end of the week at least. They will face another challenge on Friday, when schools’ winter skiing holidays start.
