Charges Dropped in Sonera Exposé Case

Helsinki District Court has thrown out libel charges against a consultant who was suspected of writing an anonymous book highly critical of telecoms operator Sonera.

The court ruled there was insufficient evidence to prove that Timo-Pekka Silén wrote the book entitled "Where Did Sonera's Money Go?".

The defamation charges against Silén were brought by former Sonera CEO Kaj-Erik Relander. Two years ago Relander was convicted of violations of communications privacy while at Sonera, and given a six-month suspended sentence. Those charges were related to tracking of employee emails in an effort to trace media leaks.

During his time as CEO of the company, Sonera lost vast sums of money in risky investments and saw its share price collapse. He resigned in mid-2001.

The book was originally published online in 2002 and later in book form under a pseudonym.
