Finland Celebrates First of May

May Day celebrations took place around Finland on Tuesday in fairly cold weather. Traditional political marches and rallies took place in various cities, and students convened in traditional locations for their traditional spring festival. In Helsinki, up to 50,000 people gathered at the traditional students' celebration in Ullanlinnanmäki.

May Day Eve was relatively busy for police, who had to respond to a number of emergency calls over fights and other types of disorderly conduct in different parts of the country.

In the Helsinki region, the night did not differ much from an ordinary weekend night. However, a few people were detained by police in connection with the "EuroMayDay" parade on Monday night. The parade was organised as a protest against "the control society", and the “commercialisation of urban space”. Police said that the event attracted about 400 people, while organisers estimated the turnout at about 1,000.

Certain individuals in the crowd reportedly threw bottles and cans, spray-painted graffiti, and broke a few windows. Organisers of the event also sought to stop the disturbances.
