"Why Were 100,000 Pregnant Women’s Blood Samples Smuggled Out of China?"

Here's the setup, can you guess why the blood was being smuggled?

The case was part of a major operation by Guangzhou’s anti-smuggling authorities following a year-long investigation and the mobilization of 265 officers. As part of the operation, two professional criminal groups specializing in the smuggling of pregnant women’s blood samples were dismantled, and a total of 26 people were arrested.

The groups earned a staggering 30 million yuan (US$4.2 million) from their blood-smuggling activities.

So far, the story reads almost like a vampire novel, especially with Chinese media detailing how the blood was smuggled: smugglers reportedly strapped tubes of blood to their bodies to cross the border. Others hid them in specially modified suitcases with concealed compartments.

A report that a US Navy Aircraft carrier was nearly struck by an apparent Houthis anti-ship missile over the summer

I happened to see this earlier today:

By some accounts, an ASBM or other missile arrived at a very shallow trajectory, with minimal warning, without a chance for interception, and splashing down around 200 meters from the Eisenhower. Details gathered from interviews with Yemen-focused U.S. and U.K. intelligence officers for this study. Names of interviewees, and dates and places of interviews withheld at interviewees’ request. The Houthis propagandized the carrier’s departure. See “America’s withdrawal from the Red Sea confirms the fall of the myth of Washington’s great power”

Tonight:

U.S. B-2 bombers and other aircraft struck five underground Houthi weapons storage locations in parts of Yemen that the Iranian-backed rebel group controls

And from earlier this month

China rejected pleas from the United States to take joint international action against Houthi attacks on international shipping, a senior American diplomat said, and encouraged the rebel group to attack the ships of other countries rather than its own.

ZhongWei Desert Diamond Hotel

From the architect's site:
Inspired by diamonds, the “purest, strongest and most eternal” element, the project aims to create a space that is both sci-fi and romantic, allowing guests to experience an extraordinary and ultimate journey in the desert.

The hotel building is cleverly integrated into the vast sand dunes, with sharp geometric sculptures contrasting with the soft curves of the desert, which not only reflects the awe of nature, but also highlights the unique temperament of the building. The design team carefully planned diamond-shaped sand-viewing windows and faceted spaces to incorporate the desert landscape into the field of vision, so that each room has a unique sand-viewing perspective and private landscape.

When night falls, the building's surface is dotted with starlight, which complements the bright starry sky and creates a dreamlike atmosphere. In particular, the Star Auditorium, as the spiritual symbol of the hotel, has a starry sky ceiling of more than 27 meters and a triangular glass of more than 10 meters high, which perfectly integrates natural beauty with ceremony space, making it an ideal place for weddings and other special events.

Zhongwei Desert Diamond Hotel is not only a place to stay, but also a haven for people to release their souls and regain energy. Here, guests can get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, get close to nature, experience the wonders of the desert smoke and the sunset over the long river, and feel the unique charm and power of the desert.

Intriguingly ominous Thailand hotel described in Dan Wang's annual letter

From his wide-ranging letter about the youth fleeing China, book recommendations, and more:

One night, we were the only guests at a resort so creepy that we debated whether the whole thing was a front for tax fraud. Its bungalows looked like they were the 3-D printed output of an AI generator that received a detailed description of Antonio Gaudí’s Park Güell. That the hotel staff kept taking photographs of us, as if they were documenting that they had real guests, didn’t allay our unease that our presence could be abetting a fraudulent enterprise.

Troubling censorship at the 2023 Hugo Awards in China?

John Scalzi:
There’s a new controversy with this last year’s Hugo Awards, involving, among other things, a number of potential nominees declared ineligible for not-at-all-clear reasons, including R.F. Kuang’s novel Babel, which was a presumed front runner before the finalist lists came out. Rather than try to explain the controversy myself (I have been away this weekend and am still catching up), I am going to point you to this piece by Cora Buhlert, which features links to other posts/articles exploring this recent uproar. I will note that at this point everything is at the “what the hell?!?” stage, and the rumors and speculation are just that, rumor and speculation

Japan failed to register newly-designed fruit, and thus can't stop China and South Korea from selling cheap knockoffs

AFP:

The variety of juicy grape ... took scientists 33 years to develop and can sell for $100 a bunch in Tokyo department stores.

...

According to the Japanese government, China and South Korea took Shine Muscat seedlings out of Japan and grafted them onto local vines to produce fruit that looks and tastes -- almost -- as good.

...

Japan cannot stop China or South Korea from growing the fruit because Tokyo -- some say naively -- failed to register the variety overseas within the six years required under international rules.

...

Japan cannot export grapes to China itself because of Beijing's quarantine rules, so Chinese growers are not technically cannibalising Japanese sales.
