Zo langzamerhand krijgt dit album mij echt in zijn greep! De heavymetaldoom zit vol geweldige riffs en sprankelende solo's en die maken dit album erg verslavend. Nog steeds drukt Save A Prayer de score, maar desondanks een halfje erbij!

Blijkbaar had ik hier nog helemaal niets geschreven, terwijl ik dat album uitgebreid heb geluisterd voor mijn review op Zware Metalen:
Wat doe je als je hoort dat de wereld over vijf maanden vergaat? Dat is de vraag die centraal staat op Songs No One Will Hear, het vierde solo-album van Arjen Lucassen. Tegen de achtergrond van deze naderende ramp schreef hij acht nummers die vanuit uiteenlopende perspectieven een antwoord proberen te geven.
De nummers worden voorafgegaan door End Of The World Show, waarin Michael Mills als showmaster op humoristische wijze een inleiding geeft in het concept van dit album. Als verteller gidst hij de luisteraar langs de uiteenlopende reacties van de mensheid op de naderende ondergang.
The Clock Ticks Down is het eerste echte nummer van de plaat. Het start op Floydiaanse wijze rustig, om vervolgens uit te groeien tot een groots, dynamisch en meeslepend geheel. Lucassen zingt verrassend sterk en krijgt hierbij vocale steun van Irene Jansen, die een deel van de lead voor haar rekening neemt.
Daarna volgt Goddamn Conspiracy, een heerlijk rechttoe-rechtaan rocknummer met een sterk refrein. Joost van den Broek laat zijn Hammond heerlijk scheuren in de geest van Ken Hensley en Jon Lord. De combinatie van Lucassens zang en de achtergrondvocalen van Irene Jansen klinkt hier bijzonder krachtig.
Afwisseling blijft troef; juist die dynamiek vormt de grote kracht van dit album. The Universe Has Other Plans bouwt langzaam op en eindigt met een epische gitaarsolo van de maestro zelf. Het vrolijke, Beatlesque Shaggathon brengt lucht voor het aangrijpende We’ll Never Know, waarin Floor Jansen een ontroerende gastrol vervult.
Nadat Dr. Slumber zijn Blue Bus bij de plek van impact van de meteoriet heeft geparkeerd, pleit Lucassen in het akoestische Just Not Today ervoor te genieten van de tijd die resteert. Daarna volgt het hoogtepunt van de plaat: Our Final Song. Deze vijftien minuten durende achtbaan voert de luisteraar nog eens langs alle sferen die dit album te bieden heeft.
Waar recente albums van Arjen Lucassen soms wat te lijden hadden onder eenvormigheid en zelfcitaten, is dit een opvallend sterk werk geworden. Songs No One Will Hear is een meeslepende en avontuurlijke plaat waarmee de luisteraar zich volledig kan verliezen in het verhaal en ontsnappen aan de waan van de dag.
Mijn score in de review was 86 uit 100. Bij nader inzien schat ik het album nu iets lager in, maar nog steeds draai ik de plaat met veel plezier.

Blijkbaar had ik hier nog helemaal niets geschreven, terwijl ik dat album uitgebreid heb geluisterd voor mijn review op Zware Metalen:
Wat doe je als je hoort dat de wereld over vijf maanden vergaat? Dat is de vraag die centraal staat op Songs No One Will Hear, het vierde solo-album van Arjen Lucassen. Tegen de achtergrond van deze naderende ramp schreef hij acht nummers die vanuit uiteenlopende perspectieven een antwoord proberen te geven.
De nummers worden voorafgegaan door End Of The World Show, waarin Michael Mills als showmaster op humoristische wijze een inleiding geeft in het concept van dit album. Als verteller gidst hij de luisteraar langs de uiteenlopende reacties van de mensheid op de naderende ondergang.
The Clock Ticks Down is het eerste echte nummer van de plaat. Het start op Floydiaanse wijze rustig, om vervolgens uit te groeien tot een groots, dynamisch en meeslepend geheel. Lucassen zingt verrassend sterk en krijgt hierbij vocale steun van Irene Jansen, die een deel van de lead voor haar rekening neemt.

Om te vieren dat het 25 jaar geleden was sinds de eerste release op het Escape label verscheen, bracht mede-labeloprichter Kahlil Turk met behulp van songwriters en een hele zwik aan muzikanten en zangers zijn eerste Turkish Delight-album uit in 2022. Dat smaakte blijkbaar naar meer, want inmiddels is deel drie uitgebracht.
Net als op de eerste twee delen staat dit album bomvol met compacte, strak gemusiceerde melodieuze hardrock. In elk nummer is de hoofdrol weggelegd voor een van de geweldige zangers die op dit album meedoen. Een van de grootste verrassingen is voor mij Andrew Freeman, die op I Am The Night echt een fantastische prestatie levert. Ik moet Last In Line ook maar eens checken….. Naast het sterke vocale geweld is er voor de liefhebbers van spetterend gitaarwerk ook veel te genieten. Dit derde deel is, net als de eerdere delen, een heerlijke mix van melodieuze rocknummers, die ondanks de vele muzikanten en stijlen toch coherent aanvoelt.

Het vorige album Nightsphere prijkte hoog op mijn jaarlijst van 2023. Aanvankelijk had Solastalgia niet dezelfde impact als dat album, maar gaandeweg blijkt dit album steeds meer te bieden. De band blijft het geluid doorontwikkelen en voegt dit keer meer blackgaze-elementen toe aan het geluid. Daardoor komt een band als Alcest soms in gedachten bij het beluisteren van deze plaat.
De plaat opent sterk met The Ashen Fallen en het fantastische Season Of Grief, maar op kant B zakt het niveau. Gelukkig is het vanaf Dreamgatherer weer een enorm sterk album met als hoogtepunt het titelnummer. De twee nummers daarna zijn min of meer akoestische bonusnummers die achterwege gelaten hadden kunnen worden. Omdat ze geen onderdeel van het eigenlijke album zijn laat ik ze voor de beoordeling achterwege.

Met elk album verkende de band nieuwe territoria en vermeed het in herhaling te vallen zonder hun karakteristieke geluid te verliezen, zelfs op Grin. Scherpe riffs, de verbeten zang van Ron Brorder en het weergaloze melodieuze soleerwerk…. Het is allemaal nog aanwezig! Qua geluid heeft de band Mental Vortex als vertrekpunt gekozen, maar heeft dat verder uitgebouwd en opgefrist met behulp van producer en mede-componist Dennis Russ. Hij gaf Dissonance Theory ook een uitstekende productie mee!
