I also really liked my fifth John Cassavetes. It is striking that with all his films so far it always takes me ten to fifteen minutes to get used to the atmosphere and the loose, relaxed style and then I get into it. Husbands is no exception.

Three men play the leading roles in this film, and they are followed in their daily affairs. However, it is not a pleasant period that they are going through and that is why they decide to make a kind of escape to England. It is quite an intense subject, which Cassavetes presents in his own natural way.

Cassavetes himself plays the leading role together with Peter Falk and Ben Gazarra. All three perform strongly, but Cassavetes makes the most impression, although the difference is minimal. His sometimes chaotic way of filming ensures that full concentration is required here, but also that the level sometimes drops slightly.

However, there are a number of very strong scenes, and I would like to mention the not yet mentioned scene with the three men and three women in a room in London.

A fascinating film, of which I saw a version of approximately 130 minutes and Cassavetes is once again rising on my list of favorite directors.

Cassavetes' style is always a bit heavy-handed, but if it works well, beautiful things can come out of it. This film is a bit hit and miss in that regard. Beautiful unique scenes such as the singing competition and the casino visit, which I think work so well because of the real friendship between the lead actors. But there are also plenty of slow and unnecessary parts.

It is also striking that there is smoking in almost every scene.

I understand the premise, the rest was disappointing. The endless, lame drunken stuff in that bar was just getting boring, and this for two and a half hours was too much for me. I didn't expect a plot, nor was it necessary, but this was all a bit too directionless for me. So I didn't make it to the end.
