Taken from life. A post-war Japanese family caught between tradition and modern life. A static image too, which makes the director even more of a witness to this family and its characters. Noriko is single, while her brother has had a family for a while. You have the two worlds that each have their dream. The single ladies enjoy the bachelor life and see marriage as an obligation. The family, on the other hand, has the hope that Noriko will find a husband and start a family, as it should be.

When an old uncle visits, those two dream worlds are shaken awake and they also seem to collide with each other. The static camerawork shows us the story and the characters. No moving camera images, so the focus is even more on the characters. At the right moments you still see the camera moving, which figuratively causes a small rapid in the babbling brook of life. To land back when a 'solution' comes out of the bus that everyone can agree with. Life is back at its known pace, the new road has been taken.

Less than Late Spring. Basically this is pretty much the same movie, but this movie focuses more on the social relationships and Late Spring more on the emotional. The other was therefore more universal and now also has more meaning and expressiveness. This Early Summer is at times less understandable what exactly the issue is. I know that, but the movie doesn't make me feel it. In that respect, the moment of the family photo is a rare highlight in that area in this movie, short but beautiful scene.
Fine film otherwise in a nice rippling pace, nicely subdued acting although I found the role of Ryû on the thin side, would have liked to see him more. But visually not very special actually. Good tight shots every now and then, but I expect more. 3.5*.

Although the subject is not as sensitive as in "Tokyo Monogatari" and there is hardly any enthralling action to be experienced, Ozu still manages to win you over with his stunning imagery for this family chronicle of ordinary people who actually all mean well and on the funny side. kids after, but only have one subject on the lips.

Simple, everyday actions and dialogues follow each other or repeat themselves and flow into a sensitive whole that gains even more dimension with the decision of the main character, beautifully and graciously played by Setsuko Hara.
