I spend a lot of time talking about upskilling for the AI era, so I’m putting that into practice and trying something new. I'm taking part in a Reddit AMA this Monday where I’ll be answering questions on AI, the future of work, and sharing my perspective on how education and workforce development are evolving in this moment, along with what we’re learning about upskilling with IBM SkillsBuild. If you’re curious or have something on your mind, join me on Monday from 11am–12pm ET: https://lnkd.in/ecJFmvTq

A central goal of quantum computation is the realistic simulation of quantum materials, but it has remained unclear whether today's devices can perform reliable material simulations within their current limited gate budgets… until now. Today, IBM announced new results that expand how quantum computers can be used as scientific instruments. Together with our collaborators, we have shown that quantum processors can capture key dynamical properties of real materials: https://lnkd.in/emJfdR3P In a recent demonstration of quantum‑centric supercomputing led by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Quantum Science Center, a team from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Purdue University, Los Alamos National Laboratory, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Tennessee and IBM Research integrated HPC and quantum resources to run quantum simulations on an IBM quantum computer to accurately model the magnetic material KCuF3. Using data from inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments as a high‑accuracy benchmark, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 between experiment and simulation, showing that quantum computers can now serve as practical tools for materials scientists seeking high‑fidelity proof‑of‑concept simulations that complement—and may eventually reduce reliance on—expensive neutron experiments like INS. This work highlights how improvements in the scale and quality of quantum processors are enabling lower error rates and quantum-centric supercomputing workflows that were crucial for the simulation accuracy achieved, and further validates that quantum computers can and will find useful applications as high‑precision simulators, even before the advent of fault-tolerant quantum computing. 📚 Full pre-print, “Benchmarking quantum simulation with neutron-scattering experiments” here: https://lnkd.in/esA5cKym
