The 2025 NAACP Image Awards honored the best in Black excellence for the past year and we have the full list of winners!

The awards were given out across several nights with the main ceremony held on Saturday night (February 22) at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, Calif.

The show, hosted by Deon Cole, aired live on CBS.

Keke Palmer won the Entertainer of the Year award and Outstanding Motion Picture went to The Six Triple Eight, with the film’s star Kerry Washington also taking home the Best Actress prize.

Beyoncé and her daughter Blue Ivy Carter were among the winners during Night 2 of the 2025 NAACP Image Awards preshow ceremonies.

On the heels of her record-breaking night at the Grammys earlier this month, Beyoncé was named best female artist and also won best album for Cowboy Carter. Blue Ivy, meanwhile, won the award for best character voiceover performance in a film for her role in Mufasa: The Lion King.

Three other recent Grammy winners also were honored with NAACP Image Awards on Wednesday: Kendrick Lamar won best hip-hop/rap song for “Not Like Us,” Doechii was named best new artist, and Chris Brown won best male artist and best international song for “Hmmm” feat. Davido.

Elsewhere, Wicked won for best costume design, Emilia Pérez was named best international film and Nickel Boys was recognized for its cinematography. Star Wars: The Acolyte won best score for film/TV.

Netflix’s The Piano Lesson scooped up a whopping 14 nominations to lead the way for the 56th NAACP Image Awards announced Tuesday, with Peacock’s limited series Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist topping the TV categories with nine bids. The five luminaries competing for the coveted Entertainer of the Year honor are Cynthia Erivo, Keke Palmer, Kendrick Lamar, Kevin Hart, and sports-talk host Shannon Sharpe.

Cynthia Erivo, Keke Palmer, Kendrick Lamar, Kevin Hart and Shannon Sharpe have been nominated for Entertainer of the Year at the 56th NAACP Image Awards, the NAACP announced on Tuesday.

The NAACP announced nominees in 91 categories in the fields of film, television and streaming, recording, documentary, writing, directing, literary, podcast, stunts and costume design, makeup and hairstyling.

The August Wilson adaptation “The Piano Lesson” led all films with 14 nominations, more than double the total for runner-ups “The Book of Clarence,” “Nickel Boys,” “Exhibiting Forgiveness” and “Bob Marley: One Love,” which received six if you count the nominations for “Clarence” and “Bob Marley” in the music categories.

The 2025 NAACP Image Awards nominations have been revealed, with The Piano Lesson, the Malcolm Washington-directed film adaptation of August Wilson’s play starring Danielle Deadwyler and John David Washington, up for 14 nominations, the most of any film this year.

Other top film nominees include six-time contenders Bob Marley: One Love and The Book of Clarence and five-time nominees Wicked, The Six Triple Eight and Nickel Boys. In addition to Wicked‘s nods, star Cynthia Erivo is also up for the Image Awards’ top prize of entertainer of the year.

For entertainer of the year, Erivo faces off against Keke Palmer, Kendrick Lamar, Kevin Hart and Shannon Sharpe, with the latter’s Club Shay Shay podcast also landing a nod for outstanding culture and society podcast.

For best motion picture, The Piano Lesson, Bob Marley, Wicked and The Six Triple Eight face off against Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

Spain’s Academia de Cine has unveiled its list of nominations for the 39th Goya Awards, the country’s equivalent to the Oscar. Leading the field is Marcel Barrena’s biographical drama El 47, with 14 mentions. It’s followed by thriller La Infiltrada (Undercover) at 13.

Also in the mix is Segundo Premio (Saturn Return) with 11 nods. The movie about real-life rock band Los Planetas was Spain’s submission for the International Feature Oscar, though it did not make AMPAS’ shortlist cut which was revealed yesterday.

Meanwhile, Spanish maestro Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature, The Room Next Door, scored 10 nominations including Best Director and a pair of Best Actress nods for Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. It did not surface in the Goyas’ Best Picture race, despite taking the top prize Golden Lion in Venice earlier this year, his first ever top A-list festival prize.

The Goyas will be handed out on February 8 in Granada.

Local hits The 47 and Undercover lead the nominations for Spain’s 2025 Goya Awards, with 14 and 13 nods respectively.

Rock drama Saturn Return and Pedro Almodóvar’s Golden Lion winnerThe Room Next Door are also high up on the list of nominees.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences on Tuesday unveiled the shortlist of 15 films that will vie for a nomination for the best international feature film Oscar at the 97th Academy Awards.

85 countries submitted features this award season but several frontrunners quickly pulled out from the pack, and easily made it onto the longlist, including Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, representing France, the Danish contender The Girl With the Needle from director Magnus von Horn, and Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig, an Iran-set feature submitted by co-production country Germany.

Several festival circuit favorites made the cut. I’m Still Here, Brazil’s contender comes to the Oscars on referral from Venice, where it won the best screenplay prize. Oscar shortlists are like exit polls released on Election Day before balloting has ended: they’re the best information yet available about how actual voters are feeling, but they don’t necessarily tell you the whole story.

In Tuesday’s announcement of this year’s 10 shortlists — which were, as always, chosen by different branches of the Academy, not the full membership — we saw a terrific show of strength from Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, with a field-leading six mentions; and very solid showings from Universal’s Wicked, with four; and Fox’s Alien: Romulus, Apple’s Blitz, Warners’ Dune: Part Two, Paramount’s Gladiator II and Universal’s The Wild Robot, with three each.

But the fact that, say, Neon’s Anora, Searchlight’s A Real Pain and Amazon/MGM’s Nickel Boys showed up on none of the shortlists is actually not an indication that they are failing to resonate with the Academy.

Chilean filmmaker Maite Alberdi, whose heartfelt documentaries “The Mole Agent” and “The Eternal Memory” earned her Academy Award nominations, agreed to step into the world of scripted fiction when Netflix and Pablo Larraín’s production company Fabula sent her the 2019 book “When Women Kill” (“Las Homicidas”) by Alia Trabucco Zerán.

The resulting screen adaption, “In Her Place” (“El lugar de la otra”), puts Alberdi back on the awards trail as Chile’s Oscar entry for the Best International Feature Film.

The original book details four real-life cases of women who committed murder but were pardoned during a time when the death penalty was still implemented in Chile. “It was the first nonfiction book by a writer who usually writes fiction. And this is my first fiction set in a non-fiction world,” Alberdi told IndieWire in Spanish via video call. “The crisscrossing was interesting.”

In Her Place, director Maite Alberdi conjures a portrait of 1955 Chile that feels once sharply specific and weirdly universal, a Santiago caught in the crossfire of its contradictions. It’s a country torn between tradition and modernity, where a woman’s worth is determined by her dishes’ cleanliness rather than her mind’s sharpness.

The film, a mix of historical drama and feminist fantasy, uses the true story of María Carolina Geel, a writer who shot her lover dead in the luxurious dining room of the Crillón Hotel as its narrative fulcrum.

Geel’s crime was more than just a murder; it became a cultural spectacle tinged with scandal, gender politics, and a country’s voyeuristic obsession. On the other hand, Alberdi makes an equally daring choice: to sideline Geel in favor of a fictional admirer, Mercedes, a downtrodden paralegal who fits into Geel’s glittering life almost too well.

There are 31 animated films, 85 international films and 169 documentaries competing in the 2024 Oscar races for Best Animated Feature, Best International Feature Film and Best Documentary Feature, the Academy announced on Thursday.

In the animated feature category, contenders include “Flow,” “Inside Out 2,” “Memoir of a Snail,” “Piece by Piece,” “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rorhirrim,” “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” and “The Wild Robot.”

In the international category, the list includes “Emilia Perez,” “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” and “I’m Still Here.” The list of eligible films was reported exclusively by TheWrap in October.

In documentaries, the field includes “Sugarcane,” “Dahomey,” “No Other Land,” “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat,” “Black Box Diaries” and “Daughters,” among many others.

Unlike the Oscar Best Picture race, which doesn’t have a real frontrunner at this point, there’s a clear favorite in the Best International Feature Film category.

With the deadline for submissions in the category passing on Wednesday and Academy members invited to become voters in the category on Friday, one big question looms over this year’s race: Can anything beat “Emilia Perez”?

At the moment, the answer appears to be no. Twice nominated for the Academy’s Best Documentary Feature gong, Chilean filmmaker Maite Alberdi is one of nonfiction cinema’s best-known contemporary voices.

On Monday evening in San Sebastian, however, Alberdi launches her first departure from the factual world with In Her Place (El Lugar de la Otra), a cunning and deceptively ambitious crime romp she has directed for Netflix.

Penned by Uruguayan writer Inés Bortagaray and Chilean comedian Paloma Salas, In Her Place debuts in competition at San Sebastian. The film’s story is based on the true tale of Chilean writer María Carolina Geel who, in 1955, killed her lover at a high-class hotel in the center of Santiago. But the story isn’t explored through the eyes of Geel. We barely see her. Alberdi’s camera is instead focused on Mercedes, a fictional character who works in the prosecutor’s office and develops a charged fascination with Geel’s life.

Dames, right? It’s the quiet ones you have to watch, although the more flamboyant also require a vigilant eye, especially if said dame is packing a pistol. Mercedes (Elisa Zulueta) is the self-effacing secretary to a senior judge in Santiago, Chile; Maria Carolina Geel (Francisca Lewin) is a murderer. The year is 1955 and, somewhat incredibly, the crime and punishment described in Maite Alberdi’s skittish film In Her Place really happened.

This, in itself, would make a ripping yarn. Geel, a popular writer, gunned down her former lover over afternoon tea in the fanciest hotel in town. She was then remanded in a nunnery, given a derisory sentence — less than two years in jail — before being released with a presidential pardon. In keeping with its historical support of Latin American cinema throughout the years, the San Sebastian International Film Festival will this year make an extra push for Argentina’s cinema industry, which has been in a state of crisis since March after its newly-elected far-right leader Javier Milei moved ahead with plans to withdraw all state funding from its film body, the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (Incaa).

The state body backs most Argentinian films, festivals and events – including major Latin American festival Ventana Sur – and the impact the lack of funding will have on the country’s sector will be, according to many industry insiders, devastating.

For more than 70 years the San Sebastian International Film Festival has been considered the premiere hub for connecting Europe’s film industry to Latin American cinema and filmmaking talent. The festival has long supported the early works of famed Latin American filmmakers ranging from Brazilian filmmaker Walter Salles to Argentina’s Daniel Burman whose respective early works Foreign Land and A Chrysanthemum Bursts in Cincoesquinas both screened at the festival.

In more recent years, Spain’s most prominent festival has made strides in strengthening the special relationship between Europe and Latin America through the creation of sections such as Works in Progress Latam (established in 2002) and its Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum (established in 2012). It was in the former that esteemed Chilean director Sebastián Lelio was given the Wip Latam Award in 2012 for his project Gloria.

“We have a very special relationship with the Latin American market,” says San Sebastian festival director José Luis Rebordinos.
