Spain’s Academia de Cine has unveiled its list of nominations for the 39th Goya Awards, the country’s equivalent to the Oscar. Leading the field is Marcel Barrena’s biographical drama El 47, with 14 mentions. It’s followed by thriller La Infiltrada (Undercover) at 13.
Also in the mix is Segundo Premio (Saturn Return) with 11 nods. The movie about real-life rock band Los Planetas was Spain’s submission for the International Feature Oscar, though it did not make AMPAS’ shortlist cut which was revealed yesterday.
Meanwhile, Spanish maestro Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature, The Room Next Door, scored 10 nominations including Best Director and a pair of Best Actress nods for Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. It did not surface in the Goyas’ Best Picture race, despite taking the top prize Golden Lion in Venice earlier this year, his first ever top A-list festival prize.
The Goyas will be handed out on February 8 in Granada.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences on Tuesday unveiled the shortlist of 15 films that will vie for a nomination for the best international feature film Oscar at the 97th Academy Awards.
85 countries submitted features this award season but several frontrunners quickly pulled out from the pack, and easily made it onto the longlist, including Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, representing France, the Danish contender The Girl With the Needle from director Magnus von Horn, and Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig, an Iran-set feature submitted by co-production country Germany.
Several festival circuit favorites made the cut. I’m Still Here, Brazil’s contender comes to the Oscars on referral from Venice, where it won the best screenplay prize. Director Walter Salles scored an Oscar nom back in Central Station in the international category (then known as best foreign-language film), with Fernanda Montenegro, who has a cameo in I’m Still Here,...

Oscar shortlists are like exit polls released on Election Day before balloting has ended: they’re the best information yet available about how actual voters are feeling, but they don’t necessarily tell you the whole story.
In Tuesday’s announcement of this year’s 10 shortlists — which were, as always, chosen by different branches of the Academy, not the full membership — we saw a terrific show of strength from Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, with a field-leading six mentions; and very solid showings from Universal’s Wicked, with four; and Fox’s Alien: Romulus, Apple’s Blitz, Warners’ Dune: Part Two, Paramount’s Gladiator II and Universal’s The Wild Robot, with three each.
But the fact that, say, Neon’s Anora, Searchlight’s A Real Pain and Amazon/MGM’s Nickel Boys showed up on none of the shortlists is actually not an indication that they are failing to resonate with the Academy.

Chilean filmmaker Maite Alberdi, whose heartfelt documentaries “The Mole Agent” and “The Eternal Memory” earned her Academy Award nominations, agreed to step into the world of scripted fiction when Netflix and Pablo Larraín’s production company Fabula sent her the 2019 book “When Women Kill” (“Las Homicidas”) by Alia Trabucco Zerán.
The resulting screen adaption, “In Her Place” (“El lugar de la otra”), puts Alberdi back on the awards trail as Chile’s Oscar entry for the Best International Feature Film.
The original book details four real-life cases of women who committed murder but were pardoned during a time when the death penalty was still implemented in Chile. “It was the first nonfiction book by a writer who usually writes fiction. And this is my first fiction set in a non-fiction world,” Alberdi told IndieWire in Spanish via video call. “The crisscrossing was interesting.”

In Her Place, director Maite Alberdi conjures a portrait of 1955 Chile that feels once sharply specific and weirdly universal, a Santiago caught in the crossfire of its contradictions. It’s a country torn between tradition and modernity, where a woman’s worth is determined by her dishes’ cleanliness rather than her mind’s sharpness.
The film, a mix of historical drama and feminist fantasy, uses the true story of María Carolina Geel, a writer who shot her lover dead in the luxurious dining room of the Crillón Hotel as its narrative fulcrum.
Geel’s crime was more than just a murder; it became a cultural spectacle tinged with scandal, gender politics, and a country’s voyeuristic obsession. On the other hand, Alberdi makes an equally daring choice: to sideline Geel in favor of a fictional admirer, Mercedes, a downtrodden paralegal who fits into Geel’s glittering life almost too well.

People may or may not realize, but the things we read, watch, or listen all day can have an effect on our psyche. Take the case of Maria Carolina Geel (pen name of real-life author Georgina Silva Jimenez). According to her admirer, Gabriela Mistral, a Nobel laureate in literature, Geel was following in the footsteps of another real-life Chilean novelist, Maria Luisa Bombal. In January 1941, Bombal shot her lover, Eulogio Sanchez Errazuriz, in the arm three times at the same Crillon hotel in Santiago, where Geel killed Roberto Pumarino Valenzuela on April 14, 1955. It would be safe to assume that Geel was heavily influenced by Bombal and was probably trying to recreate history by killing Roberto. Or she’d hit a writer’s block and was trying to find inspiration for her next piece. In prison, Geel wrote one of her most celebrated books, Carcel de mujeres (or Women’s Prison...

The film is centered around the murder committed by Chilean author Georgina Silva Jiménez, who was known by her pseudonym, Maria Carolina Geel. But instead of Geel, the focus is on a woman, Mercedes, who was a secretary to the judge overseeing the trial. Mercedes initially found Geel’s need for independence unrelatable. She was a family woman who seemed to enjoy her role as a wife and mother, and it was only after she crossed paths with Geel that something changed in her. As the days passed, Mercedes could relate more and more to Geel, but her freedom was deeply tied to Geel’s arrest. How? Let’s find out.

Humanity’s obsession with crimes (especially true crimes) has existed since, well, crimes were taking place. One of the most popular shows centered around true crimes, Crime Patrol, has been airing on TV for the past 2 decades with a whopping 2000+ episodes under its belt. Then there’s Netflix, which has sort of carved a niche for itself by unpacking the reasoning behind a crime with shows and movies like Mindhunter, Extremely Wicked Shocking Evil and Vile, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths, The Indrani Mukerjea Story, and Sector 36. Somewhere along the way, the aforementioned obsession evolved into a fascination for killers, with people dressing up as these real-life monsters on Halloween. In Her Place takes this intrigue regarding killers to the next level, but does it have anything new to say about this subgenre? Let’s find out.

Predicting the eventual five Oscar nominees for Best International Feature is made difficult by the three-step process that begins after the October 2, 2024 deadline for countries to submit entries. To be part of the selection process for this category, which was called Best Foreign Language Film before 2020, requires a great deal of dedication. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best International Feature.)
In the days following the deadline for submissions, the academy determines each film’s eligibility. Then the several hundred academy members who serve on the International Feature screening committee are divided into groups and required to watch all their submissions over a six-week period that ends in early December. Their top 15 vote-getters will make it to the next round. That list of semi-finalists will be revealed on December 17, 2024.

The wonderful Raymond Carver story “Neighbors” perfectly evoked the strange out-of-body feeling that can come from occupying another person’s home when they’re not in it — the transient thrill of living someone else’s life, and the accompanying sense that it’s a little bigger and brighter than your own. That pang, at once delicious and dismaying, colors “In Her Place,” a peculiar mixture of true-crime riff, domestic melodrama and feminist fable that marks an uneasy venture into fiction for celebrated Chilean docmaker Maite Alberdi, who landed Oscar nominations for both “The Mole Agent” and “The Eternal Memory.”
There’s more shared DNA than you might think between Alberdi’s latest and her previous documentary work. In particular, the mixture of procedural storytelling, old-school genre tropes and whimsical human comedy that shaped the hard-to-classify hybrid “The Mole Agent,” a whodunnit-fashioned nursing home study, surfaces again in “In Her Place.

Unlike the Oscar Best Picture race, which doesn’t have a real frontrunner at this point, there’s a clear favorite in the Best International Feature Film category.
With the deadline for submissions in the category passing on Wednesday and Academy members invited to become voters in the category on Friday, one big question looms over this year’s race: Can anything beat “Emilia Perez”?
At the moment, the answer appears to be no. With 82 countries having announced their entries in the race, no other film has anywhere near the visibility of the French entry, Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical about a Mexican drug lord who undergoes sex reassignment surgery. The film has U.S. distribution from Netflix and is considered a strong candidate for a Best Picture nomination, which in five of the last six years has been a ticket to victory in the international race.

Hello Insiders. Jesse Whittock here to take you through a week in international TV and film that comes from as far and wide apart as Spain and Indonesia. Read on.
San Sebastian Spotlight
Johnny Depp at the San Sebastian Film Festival
In-Depp analysis: Spain’s San Sebastian Film Festival closes tomorrow, ending what many people on the ground described as one of the event’s strongest lineups in recent years. The festival opened with a bang with Audrey Diwan’s erotic remake Emmanuelle, but that film received mediocre reviews in Spain. Deadline’s Stephanie Bunbury was a little more generous, and described the flick as a “brave attempt.” There was a lot more love for the other big world premiere in San Sebastian — Johnny Depp’s second directorial effort, Modi — Three Days On The Wing Of Madness. The period flick debuted out of competition here in San Sebastian, where Depp...

Twice nominated for the Academy’s Best Documentary Feature gong, Chilean filmmaker Maite Alberdi is one of nonfiction cinema’s best-known contemporary voices.
On Monday evening in San Sebastian, however, Alberdi launches her first departure from the factual world with In Her Place (El Lugar de la Otra), a cunning and deceptively ambitious crime romp she has directed for Netflix.
Penned by Uruguayan writer Inés Bortagaray and Chilean comedian Paloma Salas, In Her Place debuts in competition at San Sebastian. The film’s story is based on the true tale of Chilean writer María Carolina Geel who, in 1955, killed her lover at a high-class hotel in the center of Santiago. But the story isn’t explored through the eyes of Geel. We barely see her. Alberdi’s camera is instead focused on Mercedes, a fictional character who works in the prosecutor’s office and develops a charged fascination with Geel’s life.

Dames, right? It’s the quiet ones you have to watch, although the more flamboyant also require a vigilant eye, especially if said dame is packing a pistol. Mercedes (Elisa Zulueta) is the self-effacing secretary to a senior judge in Santiago, Chile; Maria Carolina Geel (Francisca Lewin) is a murderer. The year is 1955 and, somewhat incredibly, the crime and punishment described in Maite Alberdi’s skittish film In Her Place really happened.
This, in itself, would make a ripping yarn. Geel, a popular writer, gunned down her former lover over afternoon tea in the fanciest hotel in town. She was then remanded in a nunnery, given a derisory sentence — less than two years in jail — before being released with a presidential pardon. Alberdi, whose previous films include the uncategorizable hybrid comedy/documentary The Mole Agent, has turned those events into the bones of In Her Place. The flesh on those bones,...

Fall is here, which means it’s time to bundle up on your couch and stream the weekend away. Let’s get into it: There’s plenty to enjoy in October on Netflix, from a new Ali Wong special to new seasons of shows like “Love Is Blind” and “Unsolved Mysteries.” The real unsolved mystery is how it feels like there is more “Love Is Blind” dropping every month, but I digress.
October also brings with it the chance to watch Season 1 of “Yellowjackets” (a Showtime hit) for the first time on the Netflix platform, as well as more “Outer Banks” and “The Lincoln Lawyer.” The best bet, however, is the return of Keri Russell.
Top Pick: “The Diplomat” Season 2

Yet it’s the Spanish festival’s wealth of new talent and rising names in its industry competitions sets it apart. Here are 10 things to expect from the fest, which runs Sept. 20-28 at the stunning Basque seaside resort:
Blanchett, Almodóvar, Bardem, Depp, Swinton, Anderson

In keeping with its historical support of Latin American cinema throughout the years, the San Sebastian International Film Festival will this year make an extra push for Argentina’s cinema industry, which has been in a state of crisis since March after its newly-elected far-right leader Javier Milei moved ahead with plans to withdraw all state funding from its film body, the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (Incaa).
The state body backs most Argentinian films, festivals and events – including major Latin American festival Ventana Sur – and the impact the lack of funding will have on the country’s sector will be, according to many industry insiders, devastating.
As a result, San Sebastian is hosting a day of action on September 24 and has teamed up with the Argentine Academy of Cinematography Arts and Sciences and producer Gabriel Hochbaum...

For more than 70 years the San Sebastian International Film Festival has been considered the premiere hub for connecting Europe’s film industry to Latin American cinema and filmmaking talent. The festival has long supported the early works of famed Latin American filmmakers ranging from Brazilian filmmaker Walter Salles to Argentina’s Daniel Burman whose respective early works Foreign Land and A Chrysanthemum Bursts in Cincoesquinas both screened at the festival.
In more recent years, Spain’s most prominent festival has made strides in strengthening the special relationship between Europe and Latin America through the creation of sections such as Works in Progress Latam (established in 2002) and its Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum (established in 2012). It was in the former that esteemed Chilean director Sebastián Lelio was given the Wip Latam Award in 2012 for his project Gloria.
“We have a very special relationship with the Latin American market,” says San Sebastian festival director José Luis Rebordinos.

France has selected Jacques Audiard’s bold musical “Emilia Perez” to represent the country in the Oscars’ Best International Feature Film race, giving that category an instant frontrunner at the 97th Academy Awards.
The Netflix film, which caused a sensation at the Cannes Film Festival with its story of a Mexican drug lord undergoing sex reassignment surgery, is considered one of the year’s likeliest Best Picture nominees, making it a clear favorite in the international category as well.
It was chosen on Wednesday by a selection committee that had narrowed its choices to four: “Emilia Perez,” Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light,” Matthieu Delaporte’s “The Count of Monte Cristo” and Alain Guiraudie’s “Misericordia.”
Last year, that committee chose “The Taste of Things” over “Anatomy of a Fall,” going with a ravishing romance over an edgier drama that had won the top prize in Cannes. “The Taste of Things...

The race is on to select films from around the world to compete for the Best International Feature Film award at the 2025 Academy Awards. With the October 2 submission deadline approaching, countries have started announcing their official entries for the prestigious Oscar category. The films under consideration reflect a wide array of styles, genres, and perspectives from the global film community.
The selection process for the international feature film award involves stages of review. After countries submit films, an initial group of 15 finalists will be announced on December 17. Judges will then select just five nominees from this shortlist on January 17, 2025. Last year’s contest similarly started with 88 submissions before narrowing to the final five nominees. The winner was “The Zone of Interest” from the United Kingdom.
Some early contenders are already generating buzz among film festivals and audiences. Croatia entered “Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Day,” a period drama set in 1950s Yugoslavia about censorship and artistic freedom.
