Hulu's Oscars Streaming Debut Was An Instant And Embarrassing Failure
Kieran Culkin
For the last few weeks, the Hulu streaming service has been bragging about being the first-ever home to livestreaming the Oscars. The audience for the Academy Awards has been on a steady decline for years — a whopping 50% in the last decade according to Bloomberg — and catering to cord cutters seemed to be a great way to get folks to tune into the biggest show celebrating cinema. Netflix has been incorporating more live-streaming events in recent years, and has been so successful that even major live-event programming like WWE has trusted them to be their new home. Hulu, as one of the banner properties of Disney, had a huge opportunity to prove that they too could hold their own with the clear winner of the streaming wars. Unfortunately, Hulu's Oscar streaming debut was an instant, embarrassing, and colossal failure.

Some folks, like /Film's own Jeremy Smithm were lucky enough to have...

Why Just Go With It's Reviews Are So Bad
Image
The romantic comedy Just Go With It was not well received by critics upon its initial release in 2011. Directed by Dennis Dugan, the movie depicts a plastic surgeon who pretends to be in an unhappy marriage to seduce women. When his lies threaten a potential new relationship, his office assistant and her kids reluctantly agree to pose as his family; a weekend getaway to Hawaii ends up complicating matters for everybody.

The movie was a modern remake of the 1969 comedy Cactus Flower, which, in turn, was adapted from the 1965 play by Abe Burrows. The cast of Just Go With It is led by Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston and was one of several movies produced by Sandler's company, Happy Madison Productions. However, upon initial release, Just Go With It was negatively received by critics, with many citing it as a disappointing remake of an underrated classic comedy movie.

Heartstopper season 3 soundtrack: Every song featured by episode
Image
Heartstopper season 3 has finally arrived on Netflix, releasing eight brand-new episodes on Oct. 3. While fans are surely elated to be reunited with Nick and Charlie and all of their friends, the latest season tackles some of the heaviest and most mature subjects of the teen drama series yet.

As hinted by the second season, Charlie struggles with his mental health in the third season. These struggles come to a head in season 3 as both Nick and Tori worry about him and what he's going through. Elsewhere in the season, the teens begin to worry about their futures and where life will take them in university, their relationships, and beyond.

While the series digs deeper into the realities of being a teenager, Heartstopper maintains its happy-go-lucky and lovable quality that's so unmistakable. Part of that lovable qualities comes from the catchy and modern indie rock and pop soundtrack that will have...

Hayden Christensen's 10 Best Roles Outside Star Wars
Image
Hayden Christensen's performance as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in Star Wars might be the actor's most iconic, but here are 10 brilliant roles Christensen has played in other shows and movies. Anakin Skywalker is not only one of Star Wars' best characters but also one of the most influential figures throughout the entire Star Wars timeline. While Darth Vader already existed before Christensen stepped into the role in the prequel trilogy, he brought something truly unique to the character and humanized the man Anakin had been before he donned the mask.

Christensen has since returned to Star Wars movies and TV shows, first in Obi-Wan Kenobi and then in Ahsoka. These appearances were arguably some of Christensen's best acting to date, but his acting chops haven't only been shown in Star Wars. These 10 roles in various shows and movies represent Hayden Christensen's best performances outside of Star Wars.

Patti LuPone Hilariously Came For Kim Kardashian On Hot Ones
Image
Absolute living legend and Broadway icon Patti LuPone went on Hot Ones with fellow firecracker Aubrey Plaza yesterday, cycling through a series of intentionally awkward questions and answers spicier than the wings.

Patti and Aubrey visited Hot Ones both to promote their shared Marvel project Agatha All Along, and to engage in a "head-to-head" battle not unlike the game "Truth Or Dare," as explained in a description box (which hinted at Patti's "feud" with Madonna):

"Aubrey Plaza is an Emmy-nominated actress and Patti LuPone is Broadway royalty with three Tony Awards and countless legendary stage credits to her name. But today these Agatha All Along co-stars have two choices: Tell the truth, or suffer the wrath of the Last Dab. Whoever eats the most wings, loses!

"From Pattis ongoing feud with Madonna, to Aubrey's tarot reading abilities, these friends will either need to be honest, or go head-to-head with the Wings of Death.

Joey Chestnut's New 2024 World Record Explained: How Many Hot Dogs He Ate Against Kobayashi & Comparison To Past Contests
Image
Competitive eater Joey Chestnut set a new world record in Netflix's live special Chestnut v. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef. The event was streamed live on September 2, 2024, exclusively on Netflix from the HyperX Arena at the Luxor in Las Vegas. Chestnut, now 40 years old from Fulton County, Kentucky, is ranked as the number one competitive eater in the world by Major League Eating. He is a 16-time champion of the annual Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest that takes place each year in Coney Island, New York, losing only one time in 2015 between 2007 and 2023.

Chestnut did not participate in the 2024 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest for the first time in 17 years due to a contractual dispute over a sponsor between him and Major League Eating. The legendary actor and comedian gave an incredible and versatile 1-hour performance in Glendale, California on a set that was made to look like a particularly unique theater. The Sandler special was released exclusively on Netflix on August 27, 2024.

Gwyneth Paltrow Joins Timothée Chalamet in Josh Safdie’s Ping Pong Movie ‘Marty Supreme’
Image
Gwyneth Paltrow is back.

The Oscar winner and Goop mastermind is joining Timothée Chalamet in Josh Safdie’s ping pong movie “Marty Supreme.” The project marks Paltrow’s first on-screen movie role since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”

No information was given about Paltrow’s role.

Plot details for “Marty Supreme” are kept under wraps, but studio A24 posted an image of a table tennis ball with the words “coming soon” after Variety broke news of the project in July.

Paltrow, one of the most acclaimed and commercially successful actors since the 1990s, has been largely absent from the big screen since acting opposite Robert Downey Jr. in the “Iron Man” and “Avengers” movies. Best known for her Academy Award-winning role in “Shakespeare in Love,” as well as “Sliding Doors,” “Emma,” “Se7en,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “Proof” and “The Royal Tenenbaums,” Paltrow has lately devoted much of her time to the lifestyle brand Goop,...

Everything You Need to Know About the Ventriloquist Who Opened for Adam Sandler in His New Netflix Special
Image
The ventriloquist act that opens for Adam Sandler in his new special Love You is working hard to win over the crowd. “How’s he doing?” Sandler asks a world-weary guy operating the theater audio board.

“He’s doing good,” the guy croaks in unconvincing fashion.

A stray dog passes through the worn-down theater halls. Sandler looks to his entourage: “Who booked this place?”

As Sandler prepares to take the stage, he crosses paths with the ventriloquist and his dummy, wearing a cap with “Lester” bedazzled across the front. “Great audience,” says the puppetmaster.

“They made me feel real,” agrees Lester, the bespectacled puppet.

“Willie and Lester, you guys,” says Sandler. “This means a lot to me. The crowd loves you.”

While Willie Tyler and Lester might be unknowns to younger viewers of Sandler’s special, his admiration for the comic duo is genuine. The veteran ventriloquist act has been...

The Original Songs in ‘Adam Sandler: Love You,’ Ranked
Image
Adam Sandler is back with a whole show full of fresh tunes. But are any of them worthy of an animated movie adaptation, à la “The Chanukah Song”?

Well, probably not, in no small part because Eight Crazy Nights bombed so hard that The Sandman has exclusively stuck to Halloween for his holiday movies in the decades since. However, Sandler’s newest Netflix stand-up special, Adam Sandler: Love You, is filled with plenty of new ditties to leave audiences laughing and humming even after the credits roll.

The most talked-about tune of Sandler’s last stand-up special, the 2018 show Adam Sandler: 100 Percent Fresh, was, undoubtedly, Sandler’s unexpected memorial anthem for his dearly departed friend and fellow Saturday Night Live legend Chris Farley. Though Sandler again closed Love You with a heartfelt, serious song about comedy legends, this time around, the finale was far from the finest tune Sandler sung that evening,...

Adam Sandler: Love You Review – A Heart on His Sleeve
Image
Adam Sandler has been making audiences laugh for decades, from his early comedy albums to hit films like Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. In recent years, he’s also found great success sharing new material through Netflix comedy specials. His 2018 special, 100% Fresh, showed Sandler’s skills at weaving stand-up, songs, and touching tributes into a seamless show.

This time around, Sandler enlisted an unconventional director, Josh Safdie, known for gritty films like Uncut Gems. Their new special Love You takes a cinematic approach, playing more like a surreal oddity than a traditional stand-up set. Shot documentary-style, it follows Sandler from the moment he arrives at a rundown theater, getting harassed by fans along the dusty backstage halls.

Once on stage, the unusual venue and directorial flourishes keep things intriguingly off-kilter. Safdie seems to subtly subvert expectations at every turn. But the heart of the special remains Adam Sandler’s hilarious,...

Adam Sandler's Love You Special Faked Mishaps For The Show, But One Altercation Was Real
Image
Adam Sandler has a new comedy special on Netflix available now. It's called "Love You," and it comes six years after the Sandman made quite an incredible comeback to the comedy special scene with his spectacular "100% Fresh," which featured new stand-up bits, goofy songs, and one hell of a lovely tribute to the late, great Chris Farley. Does Sandler still have the goods? The answer is yes, even if the special comes to a screeching halt thanks to a certain buddy of his (you can find out more in my full review over here). But this special comes with a little something extra, courtesy of a gifted filmmaker behind the scenes as director this time.

"Love You" is directed by Josh Safdie, one half of the Safdie brothers filmmaking duo that gave us the endlessly intense and anxiety-inducing drama "Uncut Gems," featuring a banger of a performance from Adam Sandler himself.

Why Can’t Rob Schneider Just Be the Rob Schneider in the Adam Sandler Netflix Stand-Up Special?
Image
Rob Schneider makes a surprise appearance in Adam Sandler’s newest Netflix special Love You, and even more surprisingly, he doesn’t get himself booed offstage.

The oldest criticism of Schneider’s body of work dating back to the 1990s is that, without his best buddy Sandler, Schneider wouldn’t have a career worth ruining with an ill-advised turn toward conservative comedy that conservatives hate too. In 2024, Schneider is best known for publicly beefing with the entire country of Canada and getting himself kicked out of charity galas with his racist, transphobic and terrible stand-up routine. But today’s Schneider is a completely different Animal from the “You Can Do It!” Guy, Sandler movie era Schneider whose solo projects would earn one of the most enduring South Park parodies ever.

Looking back, the biggest tragedy of Schneider’s tumultuous late career is that we, as comedy fans, didn’t realize...

We’ve Reached Peak Prestige Adam Sandler
Image
In Adam Sandler’s newest Netflix stand-up special Love You, the Uncut Gems and Jack and Jill star’s Safdie-Sandler era struggles under the massive weight of his many dick jokes.

Sandler’s first collaboration with the elite indie filmmaker Josh Safdie proved to be one of the most important projects of his career. When Uncut Gems premiered in 2019, it had been 17 years since Punch-Drunk Love last proved that The Sandman could pull off a more nuanced role than “man-child who yells a lot” in a film that’s more artistically ambitious than the average Dunkin’ Donuts commercial. The success of Uncut Gems led to a renaissance in Sandler’s non-family-film career as he went on to produce and star in more challenging projects in his pursuit of an Oscar nomination that continues to this day.

However, the change of direction within Sandler’s career that culminated in the release...

Adam Sandler Explains Why Now Was Right Time to Revisit ‘Happy Gilmore’: “It Just Kind of Happened”
Image
Adam Sandler’s latest Netflix project, the stand-up special Love You, hits the streamer next week, but fans of the comedian are eagerly awaiting a future Netflix title: Happy Gilmore 2.

Netflix confirmed in May that it had ordered a movie sequel to the 1996 film, after Sandler and co-star Christopher McDonald said in separate interviews that such a project was in the works.

Now, making the rounds to promote Love You, Sandler is revealing more about what to expect from Happy Gilmore 2. On Tuesday’s Tonight Show, Sandler indicated that filming would begin in a couple of weeks in New Jersey, with real golfers and even a Travis Kelce cameo, after the Chiefs star and Sandler fan said he’d do “anything” to be in the film.

Rob Schneider Says People Walking Out of His Comedy Shows Means He’s Doing It Right
Image
What a pal! Comedian Rob Schneider showed up at the premiere of Adam Sandler’s Netflix special Love You this week with a copy of his new book, You Can Do It!, firmly in his grip. There’s no better way to support a friend’s project than hopping on his platform to promote your own stuff.

Speaking of self-promotion, Schneider used the red carpet to tell The Hollywood Reporter that he’s killing it as a comedian these days, despite recently being kicked off the stage at events ranging from a hospital fundraiser to a gathering of Republican muckety-mucks.

When people are “yelling” at him during sets, that simply means “I’m doing it right,” he boasted. “The thing about free speech is, free speech is all speech. Free speech isn’t for the nice stuff. It isn’t for the socially acceptable stuff. Free speech is the speech that challenges you.

Rob Schneider Says People “Yelling,” Walking Out of His Comedy Shows Means He’s “Doing It Right”
Image
Rob Schneider isn’t changing his act despite being confronted with audience members “yelling” at him and, at one recent Canadian fundraiser, walking out.

“I’m doing it right,” Schneider told The Hollywood Reporter when asked if those responses have made him think about doing anything differently. “The thing about free speech is, free speech is all speech. Free speech isn’t for the nice stuff. It isn’t for the socially acceptable stuff. Free speech is the speech that challenges you. Free speech is the not-nice stuff. Easy speech or speech that’s acceptable to everybody doesn’t need any protection. I’m there to challenge the audience.”

Speaking about Canada specifically, he claimed the country was “under a repressive regime where they call protesters terrorists.”

“I’m very proud that I didn’t bow to that dictatorship that [Prime Minister Justin] Trudeau is doing, and I’m happy to be one...

Image
Adam Sandler has revealed that Happy Gilmore 2 will begin filming in New Jersey next month.

The actor-comedian spoke about the long-awaited sequel during an appearance on The Tonight Show on Tuesday night. “It’s good. We worked hard on the script. We didn’t want to let anyone down. We came up with an idea — we wrote our asses off,” Sandler explained.

Sandler also revealed that the film will feature cameos from a number of professional golfers, as well as from NFL star Travis Kelce. “What a big, handsome guy. Funny and cool as hell. He’s a stud and he’s so funny,” Sandler said of Kelce. When word of a possible Happy Gilmore sequel first surfaced earlier this year, Kelce expressed his desire to be in the film, saying he would do “anything” to get a role.
