Van Damme excelled in his villain roles, bringing complexity and charisma to characters like Stillman and Vincent Brazil. Films like "Swelter" and "Assassination Games" showcased Van Damme's ability to play morally questionable, sinister characters. While "Enemies Closer" and "The Expendables 2" allowed Van Damme to shine as a villain, there is a desire for him to play more villainous roles.
Action star Jean-Claude Van Damme has unusually portrayed the hero, but there have been several occasions where he showed off his villainous side. Although movies like Bloodsport and Universal Solider cast him as the lead protagonist, some of Van Dammes best performances came when he was allowed to let loose and play a sinister baddie. Through mind-bending sci-fi films to star-studded action franchises, Van Damme has had his fair share of villainous roles in the 45 years since his acting debut.

Filmmaker Brian Skiba is teaming up with actors Alec Baldwin and Stephen Dorff for his upcoming thriller, Cold Deck. Cold Deck's production moved forward despite the SAG-AFTRA strike and is written by Joe Perruccio and Eric Bromberg. The film also includes actors Jesse Metcalfe and Tom Welling, with a release date yet to be determined.
Filmmaker Brian Skiba is teaming up with a one-time God and a maniacal vampire. Yes, Skiba is the director behind the upcoming thriller titled Cold Deck. And the independent film will bring together award-winning actor Alec Baldwin and Stephen Dorff. Baldwin once portrayed Dr. Jed Hill — a man who claimed to be a God among surgeons in 1993’s Malice — and Dorff is arguably most well-known for portraying the undead Deacon Frost in the big-screen adaptation of Marvel Comics' Blade (1998).

As Til Death Do Us Part opens The Best Man sits in a pew working on his speech as upbeat music plays in the background. That’s followed by similar glimpses of other wedding party members prepping for the ceremony. A flashback to The Bride and Groom, nobody in this film has a name, on vacation serves to reinforce the happy image.
But Til Death Do Us Part isn’t a Hallmark Channel rom-com or Lifetime Channel thriller. Because when The Bride gets cold feet and bails on the wedding, we find out everyone involved in the ceremony is a highly skilled assassin. Now the stood-up Groom wants more than just his ring back, and their employer doesn’t take resignations well.

March is still winter, no matter which animal you ask, which means it’s still completely acceptable to cancel all plans and curl up under a blanket in front of the TV. Prime Video’s movie library updates throughout the month, with most of its new additions on March 1 — including the “Rocky” saga, multiple “Carrie” adaptations, “12 Angry Men,” and more.
For Prime users who love books and TV, March means the highly-anticipated premiere of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The eponymous Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne’s band (Sam Claflin) make a mean match, starting with a hit single and leading to what seems like endless fame and glory. But where there is success there is peril, and both the band’s rise and an electric connection with Daisy threaten Billy’s marriage and everyone’s personal lives. James Ponsoldt,...

Jean-Claude Van Damme is back in action in The Last Mercenary, now streaming on Netflix. A French action comedy movie from director David Charhon, The Last Mercenary stars Van Damme in the lead role as a former secret service agent on a mission to save his son. A trailer for the movie was released ahead of its streaming debut on Netflix, which you can check out below for a sneak peek at Van Damme throwing kicks once again.
In The Last Mercenary, Jean-Claude Van Damme is a former secret service agent who must urgently return to France when his estranged son is falsely accused of arms and drug trafficking by the government. Though there are comedic elements, the movie features plenty of Van Damme back in action with the 60-year-old kicking faces, busting heads, and dodging bullets. It seems to be a must-see movie for big fans of the actor...

The name Peter Hyams may not be the mentioned in the same breath as contemporaries like Robert Zemeckis, Richard Donner and Barry Levinson, but this somewhat underappreciated filmmaker is far from a journeyman. During his five decade career he has effortlessly jumping between genres, churning out some entertaining and understated work, his most fruitful period being the 1980’s which saw the likes of Outland, The Presidio, Running Scared and 2010, a brave (and pretty enjoyable) attempt at crafting a sequel from Stanley Kubrick’s seminal work, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Enemies Closer, his first film since the 2009 Michael Douglas-headlining Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, sees him reunited with aging action hero Jean-Claude Van Damme (their two previous films together, Sudden Death and Timecop, are arguably the highlight of the former martial artist’s career). If you've always wanted to see Jean-Claude Van Damme as a French-Canadian Mountie/vegan drug-dealer, then Enemies Closer is the incredibly specific movie for you! It's a must-see film, not because it's that great, but because it's about as crazy a role as Jcvd has ever played. His one-liners are amazing, his antics are worth the price of purchase, and that hair just never quits. Tom Everett Scott and Orlando Jones also star in the Peter Hyams-directed action thriller that's available now on DVD and Blu-ray. Hit the jump for my review. Feature Let me take you to a peaceful, secluded lake somewhere along the U.S.-Canadian border. Forest Ranger Henry (Everett Scott) has relocated here for some relative peace and quiet, and to put some distance between himself and his military past. He picked the wrong lake. What's It About? Folk singer Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) has a guitar, a dream, and a big orange kitty cat. He's looking for his big break in New York City, but he's too busy being a bit of an aimless schmuck to do anything great. Inspired by the '60s folk scene in Greenwich Village, this comedy/drama has a whole lot of good music performed by stars Isaac, Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan, and Adam Driver.

Inside Llewyn Davis Inside Llewyn Davis was a hair away from being my #1 Movie of 2013 so, yeah, it's the highest recommendation of the week by a long shot. Here's a snippet from my Top Ten of 2013 write-up: The storytelling in this movie is just so lovely, soft and subtle. It's a film guided by characters that turn left when in most films the story would demand they turn right. As a result they go off on tangents that many will believe unnecessary such as the biggest complaint with this film, the John Goodman sequence. But these are the moments that make up our lives, these are the moments people want to hear about. Our lives aren't made up merely of milestones, but the little things in-between are just as responsible for making us who we are.
Out of The Furnace This isn't a great film, but it's a fascinating one if you look deep enough.

Most sane people don’t seek out Jean-Claude Van Damme movies for their dramatic depth. That’s like judging an Adam Sandler comedy on how eloquent a critique it offers of the American political system. So, should you sit down to watch Enemies Closer, temper your expectations. If you go in expecting cringeworthy dialogue, ridiculous plot twists, campy acting and enjoyable action sequences, you certainly won’t be disappointed. But if you feel the urge to ask Enemies Closer for anything more, then you’re watching the wrong movie.
As the movie opens, a plane carrying large quantities of heroin crashes into a lake on the Us-Canadian border, drawing the attention of drug dealers lead by the maniacal Xander (Van Damme). Henry (Tom Everett Scott) is a forest ranger and former Navy Seal who lives out by the lake, tending to the park that surrounds it and attempting to forget his past transgressions while enlisted.

A small plane crashes in a lake along the U.S.-Canadian border, and over the next few hours a group of drug-runners led by a militant vegan named Xander (Jean-Claude Van Damme) descend on a nearby island in order to retrieve the cargo. The only things standing in their way are a park ranger named Henry (Tom Everett Scott) and a mysterious visitor named Clay (Orlando Jones) who’s on a mission of revenge. Oh, and Xander’s lack of anything resembling a well thought out plan may also pose a bit of problem. Enemies Closer is a perfectly serviceable, low-budget action picture that is at its best whenever Van Damme is onscreen. He’s channeling Nicolas Cage circa Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans, and he chews his way through every scene with a gleefully manic energy. The bad news though is that scenes without him are slight at best and insufferable at...

Peter Hyams Takes Us Closer
By
Alex Simon
Peter Hyams has been making movies for over forty years. A native New Yorker, Hyams has the distinction of being one of the only directors who also serves as his own cinematographer on his films, a hyphenate that has caused him some controversy among cameramen (see below for more details). After making his mark with such classics as Capricorn One, Outland, The Star Chamber, 2010, and many others, Hyams hasn't slowed down, bringing us his twenty-first feature film. Enemies Closer is a white-knuckle thriller starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as the ruthless (and flamboyant) leader of a drug cartel on a search and destroy mission for his missing cache of product, which sits at the bottom of a lake on the U.S.-Canadian border. Enemies Closer
Written by Eric Bromberg and James Bromberg
Directed by Peter Hyams
USA, 2014
Jean-Claude van Damme’s first starring role was as a villain: he played a stoic Russian heavy in No Retreat, No Surrender 2, which led to his casting as the hero in Bloodsport, which catapulted him to stardom. Only now, after a career worthy of two or three True Hollywood Stories, has he returned to villainous roles. His Joseph Conrad-inspired turn in Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning was impressive, but with the new Enemies Closer, he finally gets in touch with his full-on, utterly insane inner bad guy.
The setup is so simple that the film barely needs any exposition at all: a small plane full of heroin crashes near a Maine island park. Tom Everett Scott plays the park ranger who has to juggle that situation with the problems posed by a mysterious interloper on...

Why are action movies ashamed to be action movies? It’s as if one day, Hollywood figured they could teach actors how to kick better than they could teach martial artists how to act, turning a legion of would-be dramatic leading men into shit-kickers. The era of Schwarzenegger, Stallone and Willis is over, replaced by the legion of Harry Potters and Percy Jacksons who can stand still as computer generated effects fly from their hands, or the Jason Bournes who can flail and wave their arms around as the camera shakes to create the illusion of violence. In that spirit, there is this weekend’s “Enemies Closer,” which twenty years ago would have starred Jean-Claude Van Damme. The good news is, he’s still in it. The bad news: the movie stars Tom Everett Scott. “Enemies Closer” takes place on King’s Island, a lonely Canadian resort where Everett Scott...

While they've collaborated on several projects, filmmakers John and Peter Hyams's respective approaches to action filmmaking are basically different. Father Peter (Timecop, Sudden Death) emphasizes the importance of a film's screenplay in determining its tone while son John (Dragon Eyes, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning) considers editing to be the most crucial stage of a film's development. In time for the release of Enemies Closer, a new film directed by Peter and edited by John, the Voice talked to the Hyamses about working with star Jean-Claude Van Damme, using gore to establish a film's complex tone, and comparing Paul Greengrass–style shaky-cam to Par...

Enemies Closer is the first collaboration between Peter Hyams and Jean-Claude Van Damme since 1995's Sudden Death. The reunion feels long overdue.
Van Damme showed himself to be the most versatile and introspective of action stars in the self-reflexive Jcvd, and as an eco-friendly drug-runner who calls guns "bad for the environment" and stops to admire a rare kind of strawberry while hunting down an ex-military park ranger (Tom Everett Scott), he's as vibrant as ever.
Along with Orlando Jones, an aggrieved x-factor who's got a bone of his own to pick with Scott, the three make for a surprisingly formidable trio. Enemies Closer captures the feel of action flicks of yore -- unsurprising, given that some of them were directed by Hyams himself --...

I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving, dear readers, and I hope a lot of you got out to see Frozen over the holiday weekend. December is finally here, and it’s time for us all to start preparing for our preferred winter holidays. In the meantime, this week’s slightly belated Trailer Trashin’ column takes a look at Enemies Closer, one of next January’s more low-profile releases.
Premise: Henry (Tom Everett Scott), a forest ranger and ex-Navy Seal, has his quiet life disrupted by the arrival of Clay (Orlando Jones), a former comrade with a vendetta against him. But before Clay can attempt to get revenge, the two men are caught by a ruthless drug cartel led by a man named Xander (Jean-Claude Van Damme). The cartel forces the two men to help retrieve a major shipment of heroin which went missing deep in a forest on the Us-Canadian border.

Jean-Claude Van Damme has sure been on a roll recently, hasn't he! We've seen him in an epic split Volvo commercial and a trailer for a film called Welcome to the Jungle. Now today we have a trailer for an action thriller that he stars in called Enemies Closer, where he plays a crazy villain type character. The movie also has an interesting cast that includes Orlando Jones and Tom Everett Scott. It's a little weird seeing all these actors together in this type of movie. It just seems unnatural for some reason.
Enemies Closer takes place after a major shipment of drugs goes missing on the Us-Canadian border. Forest ranger and former Navy Seal Henry is plunged into survival mode when the drug cartel forces him to help retrieve the downed package. Didn't I say things were starting to look up for Van Damme? Admittedly, Enemies Closer isn't a new project, we dug up the first trailer for this Peter Hyams/Van Damme re-team in July, but that trailer has since disappeared to be replaced by this new, equally wacky bit of fun.
Things don't make any more sense in this trailer. Something about missing drugs and Tom Everett Scott and Orlando Jones working together against Van Damme... here's a refresher on the plot:

With a new hit fall TV series keeping him busy (Sleepy Hollow on Fox), as well as an action-drama web series he released earlier this year exclusively on the popular Machinima Prime channel on YouTube, titled Tainted Love, Orlando Jones has had a good 2013, as it comes to its end. And he'll enter 2014 with what looks like a bang, starring in a Lionsgate thriller, directed by Peter Hyams (Timecop, The Relic, The Musketeer), titled Enemies Closer, which follows two sworn enemies within a forest on the Us-Canadian border, who are forced to work together to escape a ruthless drug cartel hell-bent on retrieving a drug shipment which went missing there. There's been a lot of buzz surrounding Jean-Claude Van Damme lately from his viral splits stunt (parodied by Channing Tatum on the set of 22 Jump Street) to the trailer for his first comedy Welcome to the Jungle. Now we have a trailer for the action film Enemies Closer, but this film also has some hilarity sprinkled throughout, if only because Van Damme truly looks like a mad man in this story about a former Navy Seal named Henry sent to retrieve a lost drug cartel package. But he also has to contend with Clay, a man with a personal vendetta, who is played by Orlando Jones for some reason. Honestly, this looks terrible, but at least Van Damme is keeping himself busy and seemingly having a good time. Watch below! Here's the trailer for Peter Hyams' Enemies Closer, originally from Yahoo: Enemies Closer is directed by Peter Hyams (A Sound of Thunder,...

A double dose of Jean Claude Van Damme today as the famed 1980s action star will return to screens in select theaters and via VOD services with two films opening two weeks apart.
First up is "Enemies Closer" in which Van Damme, sporting a terrible haircut, plays the villain. Tom Everett Scott plays a forest ranger forced by a drug cartel to help retrieve a major shipment of drugs lost along the Us-Canadian border.
Not helping is a man (Orlando Jones) with a personal vendetta against the ranger. Peter Hyams directs the film which is scheduled for a limited theatrical and simultaneous VOD release on January 24th.
Surprisingly different is "Welcome to the Jungle," one of Van Damme's first outright comedies. Here he plays Storm Rothchild, an unhinged former Marine who leads a bunch of corporate drones (Adam Brody, Kristen Schaal, Megan Boon e, Dennis Haysbert) out for a mandatory company desert island retreat.

All of a sudden it’s Van Damme every day. Damn. First there was that awesome Volvo commercial, then the release of a trailer for his goofy comedy “Welcome to the Jungle”, now the Muscles from Brussels offers up a look at a less goofy “Enemies Closer”. Check it out below, check it outers. The funny thing about this new trailer for director Peter Hyams’ “Enemies Closer” is that, even though Van Damme is the bad guy, the trailer is cut in a way that, if you didn’t already know he was a bad guy, you’d think he was the hero. (Okay, so a slightly unhinged looking hero.) I mean, he even gets his name as part of the tagline, for God’s sake! Apparently Jean-Claude Van Damme must have had fun playing the baddie in “The Expendables 2″, because he’s back in the bad guy saddle for Peter Hyams’ “Enemies Closer”. This is a re-teaming of sorts for Van Damme and Hyams, who worked together on a pair of Van Damme’s better films of the ’90s, “Timecop” and “Sudden Death”. They’re back in “Enemies Closer”, which finds Van Damme playing a drug kingpin (albeit one that likes to get his hands dirty) out in the woods looking for his drugs. Then he stumbles on Orlando Jones and Tom Everett Scott and all heck breaks loose. Or some such. Check out the trailer, a poster, and some images for “Enemies Closer” if you got the time. It looks halfway decent, and props to Van Damme for wanting to keep doing something different with his career instead of playing the same-o, same-o.

There are two things that can be said about the trailer for Jean-Claude Van Damme’s “Enemies Closer.” First of all, his hair is absolutely fabulous, somehow managing to perfectly capture the essence of his smug-crazy-drug dealer character. Secondly, it has Orlando Jones and that’s notable for the fact that we haven’t seen Orlando Jones in years. (Those 7-Up commercials used to light up our lives, it’s a shame he hasn’t been as prolific as we thought he’d be.) But don't take our word for it, journey down below to check out the incredible trailer for “Enemies Closer,” and before you do, here's the synopsis:After a major shipment of drugs goes missing on the Us-Canadian border, forest ranger and former Navy Seal Henry is plunged into survival mode when the drug cartel forces him to help retrieve the downed package. It's all sorts of family working on the upcoming Peter Hyams thriller Enemies Closer. Hyams returns to direct Jean-Claude Van Damme while Hyams' son John steps away from the camera and into the editing bay to cut dad's film together. It's B-movie royalty working together and the resulting movie looks kind of badass if a little convoluted. I'm not sure what Tom Everett Scott and Orlando Jones have against each other but the pair is forced to work together when they stumble on Van Damme and his cartel cronies in the woods.
