"We're all with you, Tell!" ⚔ Samuel Goldwyn Films has unveiled the new US trailer for the indie historical thriller William Tell, from filmmaker Nick Hamm. We already posted the UK trailer for this last year for its January release there - now it's set for an April opening in theaters in the US this spring. In the 14th century the ambitious Austrian Empire, desiring more land, invades neighboring Switzerland, a serene and pastoral nation. William Tell, a formerly peaceful hunter, finds himself forced to take action as his family and homeland come under threat from the oppressive Austrian King and his ruthless warlords. TIFF says it is "full of bravery, honour, and some dazzling battles, this big-screen version of the legendary hero’s tale is pure pleasure to watch. William Tell may or may not have existed in real life, but his story is so irresistible that it has become the origin story of Switzerland.

An arrow flies true from its string, whipping past mossy trees and embedding into a gilded cart guarded by richly armed knights protecting a cache of King John's wealth. What comes next is all too familiar to audiences; the entrance of England's outlaw, Robin Hood. This iconic hero has dominated Hollywood's swashbuckling and action genres for a century. From Errol Flynn and Kevin Costner to Russell Crowe, it's hard to resist playing the medieval hero.
However, there is an equally exciting hero from Switzerland who never truly got the same hype and fame on the big screen that Robin Hood has. Monuments stand in his honor, his existence is questioned as much as Robin's, and his fighting against lordly oppression has made his name a rallying...

David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham have joined the cast of “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” as the parents of the title character, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
“House of the Dragon” actress Milly Alcock headlines as Kara Zor-El (aka Supergirl), which TheWrap first reported. Production kicks off this month in the U.K.
According to DC heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, the “Supergirl” movie will be based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely‘s comic book of the same name, released in July of 2023.
“This is a very different type of Supergirl,” Gunn said. “In our [film], we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from, you know, the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip-off of Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life,...

Having directed psychological thrillers, music comedies (2011’s “Killing Bono”) and comedy-thrillers based around the famed DeLorean car (2018’s “Driven”), Northern Irish director Nick Hamm has ventured into entirely different territories for his next feature.
“William Tell” is a historical action epic that turns the clock back more than 600 years, delving into the folk story of the Swiss hero who, according to legend, helped liberate Switzerland from the tyrannical rule of Austria’s House of Habsburg. For those with only a loose knowledge of 14th century European history, Tell is most famous for being an expert crossbowman who somehow managed to shoot an apple off the head of his son.
Led by Claes Bang in the lead role and with an all-star cast including Golshifteh Farahani, Connor Swindells, Ellie Bamber and Ben Kingsley, Hamm’s $40 million retelling of the tale explores both the famed apple shot, the precursor to it and the aftermath,...

“I’m such a pessimistic arse,” Connor Swindells tells The Hollywood Reporter.
The British star (so the emphasis is on the “ar” in “arse”) is discussing his start in the industry with the global Netflix hit Sex Education. “I always think the worst and think, ‘No one’s going to see anything,'” he says about being unable to predict the show’s success. But it helps, being a pessimistic arse, he adds. “If you become conscious of an audience, you set yourself up to fail in many respects.”
The 28-year-old has the world at his feet. Life after Sex Education has been fruitful. He nabbed the lead role in Steven Knight’s (Peaky Blinders) military drama Sas Rogue Heroes and later, a job alongside Will Ferrell in a small production called Barbie.
Up next, Swindells takes on the role of legendary 14th-century bailiff Albrecht Gessler, whose brutal rule led...

Editor’s Note: The following story contains major spoilers for the movie “Queer,” now in theaters.
“Queer,” a new Luca Guadagnino romance so wounding and hypnotic in only the way he can do, ends the way it begins: with William Lee (Daniel Craig) alone again after another fascinating, devastating love affair.
After picking him up in Mexico City, expat, self-loathing, sweating decadent Lee entreats the lithe and elusive former Navyman Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey) to join him in the Ecuadorian jungles on the hunt for the ultimate trip — and the source of yagé, better known as the psychotropic beverage ayahuasca. Once deranged, off-the-grid healer Dr. Cotter (Lesley Manville) sets them up with the tea, Lee and Allerton go on a strange mind-bend of an inward journey, fusing their bodies in a hallucinatory dance until they’re spent.

The legends of great leaders who rallied people to stand up against tyranny have echoed through the ages. Stories like Braveheart and Lord of the Rings showcase brave souls who rose to defend their lands when all seemed lost. A new film now shares another such story with modern audiences—that of William Tell, the revered 14th-century Swiss folk hero.
In William Tell, director Nick Hamm sets out to bring Tell’s full saga to thrilling life. We learn how this hunting father found himself rebelling against occupying forces threatening his simple lifestyle. As the film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, viewers discovered how Tell reluctantly took up his famous bow to champion a resistance movement against cruel overlords.

Modern cinema has depicted numerous tales about legendary figures from ancient times. However, one that has somehow managed to elude our screens is the classic tale of the Swiss folk hero, William Tell. Thankfully, that's about to change with the upcoming theatrical release of William Tell, a historical thriller about the famed titular marksman who resisted invading Austrian forces and bravely led the people of Switzerland to war against the autocratic Austrian Empire. Claes Bang plays Tell in the film, which recently made its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival. After featuring in a few other festivals, William Tell will arrive theaters soon. A trailer has been released for the film, and it is awash with brutal battle scenes teasing an intense and thrilling spectacle.

"This is about our freedom, our families!" Altitude Films has revealed the first trailer for the film William Tell, an epic new look at this iconic fictional character. It just premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival last month to mostly mixed reviews, and it's set for a UK release in January. Though no US release has been set. As the nations of medieval Europe struggle for power, the ruthless Austrian Empire invades neighboring Switzerland, and a peaceful huntsman, William Tell, is thrust into the heart of their resistance. The story unfolds in the 14th Century amidst the days of the Holy Roman Empire where Europe's nations fiercely vie for supremacy and the ambitious Austrians, desiring more land, encroach upon Switzerland, a serene and pastoral nation. TIFF says it is "full of bravery, honour, and some dazzling battles, this big-screen version of the legendary hero’s tale is pure pleasure to watch.

Cry havoc, and all that – we’ve got another pulse-pounding historical epic on the horizon. Hooray! More on the William Tell movie below:
Here at Film Stories, we are (read: I am) fans of exactly two things – Robert Eggers’ 2022 Viking epic The Northman, and the first two episodes of Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat’s monstrously underrated post-Sherlock miniseries, Dracula. Everything else we talk about is just filler, really.
Until now! Because what do the two above projects have in common? Danish actor and musician Claes Bang, of course! And The Square star has a new project on the horizon in the form of Nick Hamm’s upcoming historical biopic, William Tell, about the famed 14th century marksman, which is now set for a UK cinema release on 10th January 2025.

In “William Tell,” directed by Nick Hamm, it’s Claes Bang’s turn to shoot an apple off his son’s head.
“How do you get someone to say yes to that?! We spent a long time talking about it. This is a guy who doesn’t want to be a part of the war anymore: He’s seen too much. Now, he’s pulled back into it, but how do these pieces fit together so that he bloody explodes?,” wonders the Danish actor, best known for “The Square” and “The Northman.”
“There’s a point when some sense of insanity sets in. Also, he knows: ‘I can do this.’ But when your son is right under that apple, it’s a whole different story.”
The iconic scene was the reason why Hamm, also behind “The Journey” and “Driven,” wanted to make the film about the legendary folk hero.
“That scene Is the movie.

‘Russians at War’ director Anastasia Trofimova in Venice
War doc shelved: This year’s Toronto Film Festival had been surprisingly quiet until Thursday afternoon when the festival said it had paused upcoming screenings of Russian-Canadian director Anastasia Trofimova’s documentary Russians at War “effective immediately” after learning about “significant threats to festival operations and public safety.” The decision was made “in order to ensure the safety of all festival guests, staff, and volunteers,” TIFF said in a statement, adding, “This is an unprecedented move.” Russians at War provides a rare insight into life for Russian soldiers on the frontline in Ukraine.

As Swiss legend goes, William Tell became a medieval folk hero when occupying Austrian militants forced him into a sick game: He was forced to fire an arrow into an apple atop his son’s head to save his family from execution. It was a daunting task, but the warrior’s aim was true, inspiring a rebellion among the Swiss and, centuries later, everything from Gioachino Rossini’s iconic overture to a very funny “Far Side” comic. With “William Tell,” producers hope that fable can spawn an action franchise as well.

For a folk hero whose story is seldom told in 21st-century pop culture, William Tell was surely blessed with a great name. It rolls off the tongue so smoothly that it’s made its way into everything from Grateful Dead songs to late-career Paul Schrader masterpieces — but while the average person has certainly heard the name, quite a few wouldn’t be able to tell you what he actually did.
Director Nick Hamm’s “William Tell” seeks to rectify that, giving the much-mythologized fictional Swiss marksman the full scale cinematic treatment. Pulling liberally from Friedrich Schiller’s 1804 epic play, which details Tell’s reluctant journey to embrace his destiny and lead a Swiss army in a battle for independence against a dictatorial Hasburg Empire, the sprawling film is a testosterone-filled repackaging of some of the most timeless themes in Western literature. You probably remember one thing about the Swiss folk hero William Tell: He used a bow and arrow to shoot an apple off the head of his son. But did you know that he did so on the orders of a cruel Austrian leader who wanted to quell any resistance to that country’s onerous occupation of Switzerland? Or that he became a leader of the Swiss resistance?
If you don’t remember the backstory to the bow, the boy and the apple, Irish director Nick Hamm’s “William Tell” is here to remind you, and to add a few of its own embellishments to the centuries-old folk tale. The film is big, brutal and beautiful — over the top at times and stirring at others. It finds modern resonance in a 14th century European legend, and for better and worse it also turns that legend into a slam-bang bit of muscular Hollywood-style entertainment.

The name William Tell will probably bring one of two things to mind: the famous opera overture that got recontextualized by The Lone Ranger and Mickey Mouse, and the image of a man shooting an apple off someone else’s head with a bow and arrow.
Nick Hamm, director of the new film starring Claes Bang as William Tell, wants you to know this: the 14th century Swiss folk hero was forced to shoot that arrow by a Habsburg tyrant named Albrecht Gessler, and the apple was on the head of his son.
“It’s the scene that everybody knows, but nobody knows the reason why it happened. It was an exercise in power,” Hamm told TheWrap’s Joe McGovern at TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design.
“It’s a public execution of a young boy, but it has been romanticized,” he added. “But...

Nick Hamm’s “William Tell” is a throwback. It’s a big-budget — roughly $45 million — action pic based on popular folklore and loaded with rousing action sequences, inspiring speeches from the frontlines and a glossy blend of digital and practical effects. It screens Sept. 10 at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Set in 1307, the film tells the story of famous Swiss hero William Tell, who — in this version — reluctantly leads a revolution against the oppressive Austrian king who occupies a stretch of land along the modern-day border between the countries. A former crusader, Tell would rather use his blade to till the fields than fight against oppression but is pushed to violence after being forced by the king’s unscrupulous men to shoot an apple off his son’s head from a seemingly impossible distance.

Toronto – The more you consider Nick Hamm’s “William Tell,” a gala world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, the more you realize how utterly wild it is. Set in 1307, it centers on a legendary archer, the title character (Claes Bang), and chronicles how this humble farmer in the Swiss Alps became a symbol of resistance against an evil Austrian kingdom. Like Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière’s Cannes premiere “The Count of Monte Cristo,” which was a crowd-pleaser in French cinemas this summer, it’s also a throwback to a style of big studio filmmaking that audiences haven’t experienced consistently since the ’90s.

The first and last written words of writer William S. Burroughs form the basis of this superb adaptation of Queer, a novel written in the early ’50s that, for myriad reasons, remained unpublished until 1985. At the time, its belated arrival coincided with a major resurgence of interest in Burroughs, the oldest and longest surviving member of the original Beat Generation writers, the others being Jack Kerouac (who never made it out of the ’60s) and Allen Ginsberg. By then, Burroughs had received long-overdue recognition as the godfather of the counterculture; heroin was his drug of choice, which assured his long-standing association with rock ’n’ roll, but his beatification by hard-drug fetishists often overshadowed the astonishing quality — not to mention foresight — of his writing.

And the films just keeping on coming as the 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival has announced 20 movies to its official selection, taking its count to 278 titles.
Chief among them is Jason Reitman’s SNL opening-night pic Saturday Night, from Sony which will get its Canadian premiere in the filmmaker’s homeland. With that deduction, this must mean Saturday Night is going to Telluride.
And you thought Harry Styles was big at TIFF two years ago? Well, here comes Jacob Elordi with Daisy Edgar-Jones in On Swift Horses. The pic also stars Diego Calva. The Daniel Minahan-directed movie follows a woman and her husband who are about to begin a bright new life, which is upended by the arrival of his brother. She embarks on a secret life, gambling on racehorses and discovering a love she never thought possible.
Also, getting their North American premieres are Francis Ford Coppola...
