Updated: The Wayans Family will be inducted into the NAACP Hall of Fame at the 56th NAACP Image Awards ceremony on Feb. 22.
The Wayanses — namely Keenen Ivory Wayans, Damon Wayans Sr., Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Kim Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. — join previous inductees including New Edition, Eddie Murphy, Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Spike Lee and Earth Wind and Fire.
The Hall of Fame Award is presented to “individuals or groups who have been pioneers in their respective fields and whose influence continues to shape their industry for generation.” And as one of the most influential families in comedy and entertainment — collectively behind such culture-defining hits as “In Living Color,” “My Wife and Kids,” “Hollywood Shuffle,” the “Scary Movie” franchise, “White Chicks” and the hit CBS sitcom “Poppa’s House” — they certainly fit the bill.

Dave Chappelle won best comedy album at the 2025 Grammys on Sunday, his third win in a row in the category and sixth win overall.
The Recording Academy presented the comedy album trophy during the premiere ceremony, which took place before the televised event later on Sunday. Chappelle was not present to accept the trophy.
Chappelle won for The Dreamer, his 2023 New Year’s Eve Netflix special. The new hour was Chappelle’s seventh for the streamer, and his first since the ultra-controversial 2021 special The Closer, which brought the comedian under fire for jokes about the transgender community.
In The Dreamer, Chappelle still targeted several different marginalized groups, including trans people and the disabled. “I love punching down!” he said at one point in the special.
Chappelle’s win beat Ricky Gervais’ Armageddon, Jim Gaffigan’s The Prisoner, Nikki Glaser’s Someday You’ll Die and Trevor Noah’s Where Was I.

Dave Chappelle has been nominated six times for Best Comedy Album at the Grammys and now has won six times, continuing his undefeated streak in the category with his Feb. 2 victory for The Dreamer. He now stands alone as the Grammys’ second-most-awarded comedian, breaking his tie with George Carlin and Richard Pryor and just one trophy shy of seven-time champ Bill Cosby. His previous five victories were for The Age of Spin and Deep in the Heart of Texas (2018), Equanimity and The Bird Revelation (2019), Sticks and Stones (2020), The Closer (2023), and What’s in a Name? (2024).
This year Chappelle defeated first-time nominees Ricky Gervais (Armageddon) and Nikki Glaser (Someday You’ll Die), three-time nominee and fifth-year Grammy host Trevor Noah (Where Was I?), and eight-time nominee Jim Gaffigan (The Prisoner). All four are awaiting their first Grammy.

The Recording Academy has announced that comedian and former Daily Show star Trevor Noah will return to host the Grammys for the fifth consecutive year. He has hosted since 2021, when he presided over the first Covid-affected ceremony. This year’s awards will also be a delicate balancing act since they coincide with the wildfires that have devastated areas of Los Angeles. The show will raise money for disaster relief funds and celebrate the recording industry’s best music achievements. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming event at the Crypto.com Arena on Sunday, Feb. 2.

After a brief embrace at the end of the latest episode of Saturday Night Live, it appears a truce has been called in the cold war between funny guys Dave Chappelle and Bowen Yang. If, in fact, they were ever in a war at all.
The whispers began early last year when Chappelle unexpectedly turned up for the goodnight portion of Dakota Johnson’s episode. Eagle-eyed fans noted that while Chappelle positioned himself stage left, Yang found a spot on the opposite side of the stage as far from Chappelle as possible.
Pride.com had theories about the icy distance, suggesting Yang was angry about Chappelle’s “self-identifying as a trans-exclusionary radical feminist, or Terf, and for promoting nasty and homophobic rhetoric in his Netflix specials The Closer and The Dreamer.” The site also noted that Yang, Sarah Sherman and Molly Kearney didn’t participate in taping the previous episode...

Dave Chappelle broke a Saturday Night Live record last night, delivering the longest monologue in the show's history. At 16 minutes and 49 seconds, Chappelle bested the old record held by… Dave Chappelle. The comic needed the extra time, thanks to the long list of hot-button topics he broke down on the 30 Rock stage.
“I’m tired of being controversial,” Chappelle began in protest. “I’m turning over a new leaf.”
Come on, man, we’ve heard that one before. That was his promise in his last Netflix special, The Dreamer, right before he slipped in a few more trans jokes. Thankfully, Chappelle finally left that topic alone for a night to tackle every other contentious comedy premise circa 2025. Here are some of his best jokes on subjects most comedians would avoid altogether...

Dave Chappelle remains Netflix’s top draw in stand-up comedy as his special The Dreamer led the field in its latest ratings report.
Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer cracked the top 50 programs watched between January and June 2024 with 17.4M views. This is despite the fact that the special was actually released on December 31.

It comes as Netflix released 25 new original specials in the period, well up from the 12 that it put out in the last six months of 2023.
Katt Williams: Woke Foke was second with 10.3M views, putting it at 136 in the list, followed by Kevin Hart: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor with 7.1M views. Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs scored 6.1M views, just ahead of Mike Epps: Ready to Sell Out,...

Nikki Glaser was nominated for her first Emmy in July for her HBO special Someday You’ll Die. That day, she told Deadline that she wanted to parlay that show’s success, as well as her breakout appearance at The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady, into three things: working with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, sitting in a VIP box for a Taylor Swift show and hosting SNL.
Less than a month on, it seems that the latter is happening.
Glaser, speaking at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees event, said there’s “interest” from the NBC late-night show. “I think I would kill it,” she said.
Glaser, who has been working in comedy for more than 20 years, knows that she needs to take advantage of this moment, where she was one of the stars of Netflix’s biggest-ever live event and her stand-up special broke records for HBO and Max....

The current Best Variety Special Directing Emmy lineup features an abundance of heavy hitters, including reigning champ Hamish Hamilton, who finally triumphed on his seventh bid in this category for helming the “Super Bowl Lvii Halftime Show.” Having shared that victory with Jay-Z, he is now generally expected to achieve a solo win for his work on the 2024 Oscars ceremony.
Hamilton’s most imposing challengers are Stan Lathan (“Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer”) and Glenn Weiss (“76th Tony Awards”), each of whom has already beaten him at least once. Also in the mix are the directors of “Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic,” “Tig Notaro: Hello Again,” and “Trevor Noah: Where Was I,” all of whom are new to the category.
In order to determine just how likely Hamilton’s potential follow-up win is, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure to make your predictions in this...

The funniest thing to come out of Joe Rogan’s new Netflix special is the social media mocking it, but don’t kid yourself: CEO Ted Sarandos benefits from that, too.
Rogan, a 56-year-old podcaster, has been called a lot of things since “Burn the Boats” streamed live on August 3. According to his critics on X, he’s “unfunny,” “a bigot,” “the dumbest man on the planet,” “like if Charlie Brown grew up, did steroids, finished balding, and never went to therapy,” “a lapdog for billionaires,” “adult Caillou,” “proof that those D.A.R.E. videos about the dangers of weed might have made some valid points,” and “the Cybertruck of comedians.”
The progressive pile-on is objectively funny and, at first glance, looks like a welcome counterbalance to the millions of Rogan fans who make “The Joe Rogan Experience” the world’s biggest podcast. In the special, Rogan aggressively mocks the LGBTQ community,...

The 23rd edition of the Transilvania International Film Festival, kicked off Friday night with a sold-out screening of Dogman, the canine-focused revenge thriller by the French veteran Luc Besson, with Dogman co-star Jojo T. Gibbs in attendance.
Some 3,500 viewers backed Unirii Square in Cluj-Napoca for the start of the 11-day festival, which runs through June 24. The biggest film extravaganza in Romania, the festival is one of the premier events on the Eastern European industry calendar, with more than 200 films, exhibitions, concerts, talks and special events scheduled, and around 1,000 industry professionals expected.
Alongside Jojo T. Gibbs, most recently seen in Alex Garland’s Civil War, the TIFF guest list this year includes Italian filmmaker Daniele Luchetti (The Yes Man), who will be honored with the festival’s special award for contribution to world cinema; and Romanian film and theater legend Catrinel Dumitrescu (Aurora), who will receive the excellence award at the closing gala on June 22nd.

Today, Netflix released viewership data for the second half of 2023. The numbers shine a light on what worked, what flopped, and how Netflix may move forward in the future.
Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com ‘One Piece’ to Rule Them All
The most-watched show on Netflix in the second half of 2023 was “One Piece.” The live-action remake of an anime classic racked up an incredible 71.6 million views and over 541 million hours. The easy conclusion is that Netflix should greenlight more live-action remakes of anime shows, right? Well, maybe not.
One of Netflix’s most high-profile flops was the live-action “Cowboy Bebop,” which hit the platform in November 2021. Although it hit the Netflix Top 10 list for three weeks, the show declined 59% in viewing hours from its second week to its third. Netflix canceled the show less than a month after its debut.
Netflix’s remake of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” was a hit this year.

Viaplay shut its direct-to-consumer service in February, but the Scandi streamer is still active in the U.S.
The platform has struck a deal to launch a subscription channel on Prime Video Channels, offering originals such as Börje – The Journey of a Legend, Furia and Gold Run.
The channel launches on Prime Video Channels today, offering access to Viaplay for $5.99 a month, with a free seven-day trial.
The development comes after Viaplay closed its subscription streaming app in North America after a turbulent 2023 in which the Sweden-based company made 25% of its staff redundant and restructured around a package of sports rights and unscripted content. Expensive scripted shows were axed and sold, and the streamer has since pulled out of North America and the UK.
Exits from the Baltics and Poland are also coming, with Group President and CEO Jørgen Madsen Lindemann telling shareholders the company “will be different” in its annual report last month.

The 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards took awards season one step closer to the Oscars.
The annual PGA Awards happened February 25, immediately following the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards. The awards-heavy weekend festivities also included the 2024 SAG Awards on February 24.
The nominees mirror the Academy Awards’ frontrunners list, with winner “Oppenheimer,” plus “American Fiction,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Past Lives,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” among the contenders.
Formally known as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, the Theatrical Motion Picture category for the PGA Awards has historically been an indicator of Best Picture winners, with 15 of the previous 20 winners going on to win the top title at the Academy Awards.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” director and “Maestro” producer Martin Scorsese was honored with the David O. Selznick Achievement Award for his producing work over the last half-century.

Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” will notch another incredibly important precursor win on its path to the Oscars at the upcoming 35th Producers Guild of America Awards on Sunday, Feb. 25. According to our official odds, the blockbuster film will take home the honor of Best Picture. The ceremony includes other film categories such as animated and documentary feature and television trophies for drama, comedy, limited series and more. Scroll down for our official PGA Awards odds in 10 categories with our winner predictions highlighted in gold.
A victory for “Oppenheimer” here would be significant because, more often than not, the winner at PGA goes on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Since 2000, the two prizes have gone hand-in-hand 16 times. The exceptions are film years 2001 (when PGA opted for “Moulin Rouge!” and the Oscars awarded “A Beautiful Mind”), 2004 (“The Aviator” / “Million Dollar Baby”), 2005 (“Brokeback Mountain” / “Crash”), 2006 (“Little Miss Sunshine” / “The Departed...

Netflix rang in 2024 with a huge opening week for its series Fool Me Once.
The thriller based on a novel by Harlan Coben scored better than 3 billion minutes of viewing in the week of Jan. 1-7, easily leading Nielsen’s streaming charts for the week (it premiered on New Year’s Day). The series had the biggest single week for any streaming show since August, when Suits (with a much higher episode count) brought in 3.24 billion minutes of viewing.
Fool Me Once had more than twice the viewing total of the second-place show, Reacher. The Prime Video series continued its strong second season, racking up 1.38 billion minutes of watch time for the week that episode six premiered. Nielsen also revised Reacher’s totals for the previous two weeks after correcting an issue related to audio capture for Prime Video shows: It drew about 1.4 billion minutes each week, pushing its total...

Harlan Coben’s “Fool Me Once” delivered quite the opening week as it managed to record 3.04 billion viewing minutes during the Jan. 1-7 viewing window and cracking Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 chart at No. 1. For context, that’s an impressive feat considering that’s more minutes viewed than the No. 2 and No. 3 titles combined.
Amazon’s “Reacher” marked its fourth week among the top 10 titles following the release of Season 2 with another recorded 1.38 billion minutes viewed. That now marks the show’s fourth consecutive week recording over 1 billion minutes viewed. Nielsen also adjusted its previous rankings for “Reacher” after addressing an audio asset capture interruption affected the reporting intervals of Dec. 18-24 and Dec. 25-31. With the revised data taken into consideration, the title moved to No. 1 overall with 1. 451 million viewing minutes for the Dec. 18-24 viewing window and landed at No. 1 with 1.443 million minutes viewed during the Dec. 25-31 interval.

Kevin Hart joined The Independent for a recent interview in which he called Jo Koy a “phenomenal” stand-up comedian following the disastrous reviews Koy earned as the host of the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. Hart made headlines earlier this month when he said he will never host the Oscars because award shows “just aren’t comedy-friendly environments anymore,” and he doubled down on that opinion while talking about Koy. He argued that Koy had a far more difficult time connecting to the celebrities in the room because he’s just not an industry comic.
“Look, the climate of comedy attached to award shows has just changed drastically,” Hart said. “And as a talent, if you don’t have the relationships that are in that room, those rooms can be cold. I don’t consider [awards shows] to be good gigs at this point.”

For all his controversies, audiences are still tuning in to Dave Chappelle.
The comedian’s latest Netflix special The Dreamer was No. 2 on the English-language TV charts from January 1 to 7, its first full week on the streamer. During that window, it managed 10.2M views, which is pretty substantial for a one-hour comedy special.
This is the special’s second week on the Netflix charts after it jumped to No. 5 with just one day of viewing under its belt.
The top spot on the English TV charts went to Fool Me Once, which was also the most-watched title across the platform for the week with 37.1M viewers. The entire eight-episode series dropped on Netflix on January 1, so this accounts for an entire week of viewing.
Berlin put up another impressive week on the non-English TV list with 22.3M views, doubling its viewership from the week prior. The release of the new...

Taylor Sheridan is a perfect Joe Rogan guest; they're both an interesting combination of rich Hollywood elite and reactionary 'anti-woke' warrior. Rogan was paid $200 million for a three and a half year contract with Spotify, and Sheridan owns a $350 million ranch that he supposedly charged Paramount $50 thousand a day to shoot at. At the same time, they like to think of themselves as regular, tough American men, just like you and me, with traditional values. They spit at those hoity-toity critics who dare to dislike their work. On a recent three-hour-plus episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Sheridan and the host discussed the fabled good ol' days, the secret Russian plot to turn Americans gay, and how you just can't say anything anymore because of cancel culture, despite the two celebrities having audiences of millions. They started with bashing critics.
"Critics are less relevant today than at any time in human history.

Dave Chappelle calls it “one of the craziest things I have ever seen.”
He is talking, of course, about the infamous Will Smith/Chris Rock Oscars confrontation.
Like many, Chappelle wasn’t sure what he was watching. He thought it was “fake,” and he “waited 30, 40 minutes” before calling Rock to find out what really happened.
“I called him on FaceTime, and he picked up,” Chappelle shared. “Soon as he picked up, he said, ‘Yous the only n***a I’d answer the phone for.’ Apparently, Obama and Oprah, everybody called this n***a to see if everything’s all right.”
“And I thought it was fake. I didn’t know,” he continued. “So I asked. I go, ‘Well, you know.’ He said, ‘What?’ I said, ‘Did it hurt?’ He said, ‘Yes, n***a, it hurt.’ And then I knew it was real. And then, and only then, was I offended.

A new season celebrating John Barry’s film soundtracks come loaded with offence warnings that don’t seem that necessary
• BFI season gives James Bond films trigger warnings
Culture warriors have heard a safety-catch being clicked firmly into place at London’s BFI Southbank for a forthcoming season of 60s movies – variously naughty, groovy and gritty – scored by the great composer John Barry: Soundtracking Bond and Beyond. The “Beyond” part means classics such as The Ipcress File and Midnight Cowboy, but obviously 007’s exploits are the main event.
And there’s a prominent warning: “Please note that many of these films contain languages, image and other content that reflect views prevalent in its time, but will cause offence today (as they did then).”
Those last four words will be savoured by historians of offence management: the additional pre-emptive assertion that some of this was iffy then, offensiveness is not relative and that was no excuse.

Comedy is one of the most subjective things in the world. So, if you find the following opinion offensive or frustrating, then you feel the same as many people feel about some comedians themselves. So don't be a snowflake, right?
Dave Chappelle is one of the greats, but his new Netflix special, The Dreamer, is not. And this is coming from someone who has actually enjoyed most of Chappelle's Netflix comedy up til now, and especially his most recent Saturday Night Live monologue. The Dreamer mostly features Chappelle going behind the scenes of Chris Rock's 'Oscar Slap' and their massive Hollywood Bowl performance where someone rushed the stage to attack Chappelle. He name-drops Jim Carrey, Norm MacDonald, Jamie Foxx, Puff Daddy, Jon Stewart, and many more. Ultimately, it's like he's selling details to the tabloids. It doesn't even feel like a comedy special.

It looks like many households tuned in to watch Zack Snyder’s critically divisive Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire over the holidays, with Netflix revealing it was their top movie over the last week. According to the Netflix Top 10, it pulled in a pretty big 34 million views, with an estimated 77 million hours watched. It easily beat the figure it claimed last week, 23,900,000 views, showing it had good staying power. So, how does it rank up against some other recent titles? It’s trailing Leave the World Behind, which is the service’s biggest hit in a long time, which chalked up 41 million views its first week and 44.9 million the second week, but it’s done much better than recent titles like Leo, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget and David Fincher’s The Killer. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of hold it has in January. However,...

After receiving harsh criticism for his remarks about transgender and LGBTQ+ communities in his previous Netflix special The Closer, Dave Chappelle again took a jab at trans people and targeted the disabled community in his latest special The Dreamer.
Chappelle focused on the trans community in his opening. He recalled meeting Jim Carrey on the set of the 1999 movie Man on the Moon, in which Carrey portrayed the late comedian Andy Kaufman.
“I was very disappointed because I wanted to meet Jim Carrey and I had to pretend he was Andy Kaufman all afternoon. It was clearly Jim Carrey. I could look at him and clearly see it was Jim Carrey,” Chappelle said, describing how Carrey stayed in character while off-camera. “I say all that to say … that’s how trans people make me feel.”
He then moved on to the disabled community. “Tonight, I’m doing all handicapped jokes.

Maybe it’s time for Dave Chappelle to try some new material.
The comedian’s newest special, “The Dreamer,” debuted on Netflix on Dec. 31, and largely focuses on his early years in entertainment and how he manifested his success. But he floods the first 12 minutes of the set revisiting his favorite target in recent years: Transgender people.
Chappelle opens the special by telling a story about visiting Jim Carrey while he was shooting the 1999 film “Man on the Moon,” where the actor famously went method on set while portraying comedian Andy Kaufman. Dave recalls being “very disappointed” that he spent the day speaking to Carrey pretending to be Kaufman, ending by saying, “That’s how trans people make me feel.”
He then addressed the controversy surrounding his anti-trans material, saying, “If you guys came here to this show tonight thinking that I’m going to make fun of those people again,...
The comedian’s newest special, “The Dreamer,” debuted on Netflix on Dec. 31, and largely focuses on his early years in entertainment and how he manifested his success. But he floods the first 12 minutes of the set revisiting his favorite target in recent years: Transgender people.

Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer, the comic’s seventh stand-up special for Netflix, opens with a quote about the nature of success by Henry David Thoreau before capturing the comic in stark black-and-white, moving through the crowd in slow-mo (cigarette in hand, naturally) to Radiohead’s “Daydreaming,” like a championship boxer before a fight. We’re at the Lincoln Theatre in Chappelle’s hometown of Washington, D.C., the very place where he filmed his first stand-up special, Killin’ Them Softly, 24 years ago. Quite a lot’s changed since then,...

Dave Chappelle isn’t exactly toning it down, but his new stand-up special The Dreamer is arguably more reflective and tackles a broader array of topics than his last couple of Netflix efforts.
On Sunday, the controversial comedian returned to Netflix with The Dreamer, his first full-length stand-up special in two years.
The Dreamer plays more like a traditional comedy special than 2021’s ultra-controversial The Closer — which was criticized for being hyper-focused on the trans community and Chappelle defensively responding to his critics — yet the comedian still targets marginalized groups, such as the disabled. One lengthy bit in the new special is about paraplegic former North Carolina Republican representative Madison Cawthorn, who famously alleged he was invited to Washington sex parties. “I don’t doubt they do this shit in Washington [but] who the fuck invites a paraplegic to an orgy?” Chappelle wondered, and, at one point, declared: “I love punching down!

U.K. based sales agency Film Republic has picked up Peru’s 2024 Oscar entry “The Erection of Toribio Bardelli,” the latest film from Adrián Saba, one of Peru’s most prominent auteurs on the festival scene.
Film Republic has also shared a first international trailer with Variety. The film screens this week in Los Angeles at the GuadaLAjara Film Festival LA, which runs Nov. 1-3. V&r Films distributes in Peru, Livres Distribution in Brazil.
Set in central Lima, “The Erection of Toribio Bardelli” captures the Bardelli family in deep grief at the death of the wife and mother, Toribio Bardelli, the father suffering erectile dysfunction.
Feeling out of place in a current world, clinging to old world values such as virility but, as captured in a first scene in a brothel, Toribio can’t even get it up.
He mourns the death of his wife, can’t get over...

Iqbal H. Chowdhury’s “The Wrestler” and Mori Tatsutya’s “September 1923” were announced joint winners of the New Currents competition at the Busan International Film Festival.
“The Wrester” “was like a single round match, magically depicting an exciting narrative,” the jury said. “We support the bravery to face the history that had been forgotten,” the jury said of “September 1923.”
In the separate Jiseok competition, open to more experienced Asian filmmakers, the joint winners were Prasanna Vithanage’s “Paradise” and Mirlan Abdykalykov’s “Bride Kidnapping.”
“Vithanage exposes how a corrupt regime ruins this beautiful country by obstructing peace, depriving its citizens of humanity as they corner them into oppression,” said the separate Jiseok jury. Calling “Bride Kidnapping” a “powerful film,” the Jiseok jury said, “This film vividly depicts the prevalent shocking customs in Kyrgyzstan with unforgettable characters and a straightforward narrative.”
The prizes were presented on Friday at a closing...
