Stephen King's opinions on Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" are very well known by now. Although Kubrick's film is often listed as one of the scariest horror movies of all time, King objected to all the ways Kubrick and his co-screenwriter Diane Johnson altered his original 1977 novel. King's book was about a recovering alcoholic tragically losing control, while Kubrick's movie was about how that same author was kind of inevitably drawn to ghostly evil. In King's eyes, the film was less humane than what he had written. Many, many of King's novels have been adapted to film and TV, and he usually prefers -- as one might expect -- the versions with higher levels of literary fealty.
King, however, isn't so protective of his work that he wouldn't mind seeing a striking and daring artist mess with it a little. Cast in point: King has said that he...

To say Lars von Trier is a divisive filmmaker and artist is ... a massive understatement. Throughout his career, von Trier has written and directed groundbreaking, controversial movies like "Dancer in the Dark," "Antichrist," and "Nymphomaniac" — but now, one of his bleakest films, which also happens to star Kirsten Dunst, is finding new life on Hulu (via JustWatch).
Released in 2011, von Trier's film "Melancholia" is actually part of what he calls the "Depression trilogy". While "Antichrist" focuses on a couple grieving a tragic loss and "Nymphomaniac" utilizes vignettes to chart the story of one woman's lifelong trauma, "Melancholia" takes a broader focus: Specifically, it tackles the end of the world.
Dunst stars as Justine, a woman who, as the film begins, is marrying a man named Michael (Alexander Skårsgard), with her sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and Claire's husband John (Kiefer Sutherland) among those in attendance. To say the reception doesn't go smoothly is also an understatement,...

Charlotte Gainsbourg participated in this year’s Kering Women in Motion Talks at Cannes, which the actor is attending as part of the star-studded cast of Wes Anderson’s new movie “The Phoenician Scheme.” Gainsbourg is also one of the leads in Amazon Prime Video’s recently-released original series “Étoile.” The show hails from “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino.
Gainsbourg is a Cannes veteran, having won the festival’s best actress prize in 2009 thanks to her acclaimed role in Lars von Trier’s “Antichrist.” In her Kering conversation, moderated by Variety’s Angelique Jackson, Gainsbourg admitted that she originally “had difficulties with Cannes” when she would attend as a young actor.
“My first best memory is with Lars von Trier,” Gainsbourg said. “I was so proud to have done that film and present it here. It was very special to get that prize.”

Étoile is a new show from Prime Video that puts fans in the high stakes world of ballet. Centered around two highly respected ballet companies, the series unpacks the struggles of a post-covid return to the theater and the desperate attempt to keep art, like ballet, alive and thriving. One of the two leads of the series is Charlotte Gainsbourg, a reknown actress who is known for more dramatic work. But she's excited to show people in the United States her comedic side.
During an interview with Vogue, Gainsbourg spoke about how audiences see her as a "dramatic" actress but that she enjoys doing comedies. “People here see me only as a dramatic actress, but I was always looking for comedies as much as I could,” she said. Gainsbourg is known in the States for her work in Lars von Trierfilms like Melancholia and Nymphomaniac. “I enjoyed doing comedy in France.

Nymphomaniac was initially rated Nc-17 and contains many sexually explicit scenes and disturbing violence.
Mia Goth is one of the most exciting actresses working in Hollywood today. In each role, she fully immerses herself in the character, delivering raw performances that are haunting and unforgettable. Best known for starring in Ti West's films X, Pearl, and MaXXXine, Goth is incredibly savvy at picking her roles and has worked with some of today's most acclaimed directors, including Luca Guadagnino, Brandon Cronenberg, and Gore Verbinski. But it was her 2013 debut film, Nymphomanic, directed by Lars von Trier, one of cinema's most acclaimed and controversial filmmakers, that gave Goth one of her most memorable roles.
Nymphomaniac is a provocative character study that delves into human desire and obsession. The film follows Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a self-diagnosed nymphomanic, as she reflects on her life and relationships, primarily focused on her sexual experiences. The movie,...

If you believe that sex addiction is a ‘guy thing’ or that it’s a fun-filled, nonstop orgy of pleasure and fun, all you need to do is watch the opening scene of Thirstygirl. This is where we first meet Charlie – inside a filthy public toilet. She is breathlessly zooming into a photo of a naked man, sending suggestive selfies and frantically Googling gangbang porn before she starts masturbating. There is nothing glamorous or alluring about the way first-time director Alexandra Qin portrays sex addiction. It’s a cold and sobering depiction of a compulsive and uncontrollable behaviour which, instead of satisfaction, brings shame to her lead character, straining her already fragile relationship with her sister as the two drive to a rehabilitation centre. Loosely based on her own experiences with sex and love, drug and alcohol addiction, Qin’s ten-minute proof of concept short dances between comedy and drama...

Mia Goth is a rising star who has captured the attention of film lovers with her eccentric characters and captivating performances. Essentially a scream queen, her brilliant portrayal and roles showcase the depth and intensity she harbors as an actor.
But beyond her on-screen talent and her unique blend of grace and intensity, there lies more than what meets the eye. Not only does she have a fascinating family ancestry that spans several cultures and parts of the world, but the actress is also multilingual and can speak over three languages pretty fluently.

Mia Goth is quickly rising in Hollywood, with credits in X and Pearl, and is now linked to Marvel's Blade reboot. Goth may not play Lilith in Blade due to production setbacks, but she could excel as Lady Death in the MCU. With a diverse repertoire, Goth's potential to embody the cosmic entity Lady Death is drawing attention in the industry.
The following contains mild spoilers for MaXXXine and Deadpool & Wolverine.
When it comes to modern scream queens, fans can look to Jenna Ortega, Maika Monroe, and Melissa Barrera, as those taking the baton on from Hollywood icons Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, and Neve Campbell. One name that's quickly rising the ranks in this new batch, however, is Mia Goth.
Goth has shot into prominence even more thanks to horrors like X and Pearl. As is the unofficial industry standard, such a rising star is bound to end up making comic book movies.

August is gonna be huge for Disney+ and Hulu! There’s so much cool new stuff coming out over the next month to keep us entertained as summer wraps up.
Disney+ has some awesome shows starting new seasons. “Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures” is back on August 14th with more space adventures. Kids can also look forward to fresh episodes of “Me and Winnie the Pooh” on the 21st. Music fans should check out “Are You Sure?!,” a new show about BTS members Jimin and Jung Kook that comes out the 8th.
Hulu really loaded up their August lineup with something for everyone. One of the biggest things has to be season 4 of “Only Murders in the Building” premiering on the 27th. I heard they added some famous people like Zach Galifianakis and Eugene Levy too which will be sweet.
Movie lovers can watch a bunch of new flicks that just left theaters too.

Since shifting to acting a decade ago, Mia Goth has cemented herself as a modern-day scream queen and has earned major recognition for her performance in the X series. After joining forces with filmmaker Ti West, Goth headlined X and its prequel Pearl, in which she played the villain of the first film, and the third entry in the trilogy, MaXXXIne, has also opened to favorable reviews.
But despite enjoying an acclaimed filmography over the course of the last ten years, Goth still struggles with one aspect of the production process, which she detailed in a recent interview.

Mia Goth praises her experience playing fearless characters in Ti West's X horror trilogy. She hopes to move beyond the horror genre, expressing a love for romantic films. West praises Goth's ability to connect with the material and play multiple roles in the trilogy.
Mia Goth, the movie star who saw her career in horror take off after her performance in Ti West's slasher film X and its sequel, Pearl, has addressed her participation in the X film series. Goth is a young actor who has always been associated with horror, and more so in recent years as she became an essential part of West's trilogy. Pearl, the second film in the franchise and the prequel that served as the origin story for her "old lady" character, was co-written by Goth and West.
Her performance in the film was so good that it brought back to the table the conversation about Oscar-worthy horror performances.

A24 released the trailer for “Maxxxine” early Monday, the third part of a genre trilogy from Mia Goth and director Ti West. Whereas “X” focused on a porno shoot in 1979 and “Pearl” took the action way back to 1918 (with Goth mugging with a frozen smile for insane lengths of time), “Maxxxine” is set in Los Angeles during its sleaze nadir of 1985, with Goth’s Maxine Minx ready to make the transition from adult entertainer to horror movie star. Alas, a serial killer (“The Night Stalker”) is on the loose, causing trouble.

Is Yorgos Lanthimos’ horny fairytale Poor Things really available to stream on the home of straight-up fairytales, Disney+? Yes — kinda.
As of March 7th, the film has become available to stream on Disney+ in the UK, and on Hulu in the United States. But thanks to Disney+ and Hulu’s ongoing integration, viewers in the US with the bundle have the option to watch Poor Things directly on Disney+.
What’s notable about this is Poor Things’ graphic content. As Consequence’s Clint Worthington noted in his review, the film features “everything from rampant scenes of acrobatic sex to dismemberment and disfigurements of all sorts.” Throughout its narrative, main character Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) — a developing infant’s brain placed in a grown body — discovers masturbation, sexual pleasure, exploitation, and many grim aspects of the modern world.
Not a whole lot of this imagery is exactly what you’d imagine...

Denis Villeneuve's new hit film "Dune: Part Two" sees the rise of a villain not glimpsed in "Dune: Part One." In the film, the evil Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård), having lost faith in his nephew Rabban (Dave Bautista) and his ability to exterminate the Fremen on Arrakis, turns to his far more sociopathic, aggressive nephew Feyd-Rautha (Austin Butler), a young man with no remorse and a murderous streak a mile wide. A large section of "Dune: Part Two" is devoted to describing Feyd's horrible evil, with several Bene Gesserit witches noting that he can only be controlled through flattery and sexuality, not conscience. Feyd is a violent, walking id, and the film ultimately culminates in a knife fight between him and the Messianic Paul Atreaides (Timothée Chalamet).
In David Lynch's eccentric 1984 "Dune" adaptation, rock star Sting played Feyd, and there is a notorious scene wherein Sting emerges from a bizarre,...

Focus Features has bought international rights to Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce and Joe Alwyn, Variety has learned.
Corbet, who sits on the Berlinale jury, penned the film with Mona Fastvold (“The World to Come”), a Norwegian filmmaker who is also his wife. The film charts 30 years in the lives of visionary architect László Toth and his wife, Erzsébet, who flee post-war Europe in 1947 and witness the birth of modern America. László initially endures poverty and indignity, but the architect’s genius soon catches the attention of charming industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren, whose dark influence threatens to destroy everything László and his wife have built.
The cast is completed by Raffey Cassidy (“White Noise”), Isaach De Bankolé (“Casino Royale”), Alessandro Nivola (“The Many Saints of Newark”), Stacy Martin (“Nymphomaniac Vol I”), Emma Laird (“Mayor of Kingstown”), Jonathan Hyde (“Titanic”) and Peter Polycarpou...

Stellan Skarsgård is finding the “Melancholia” in fellow marriage film “Mamma Mia!”
Skarsgård compared filming the beloved 2008 Abba-centric musical movie to starring in a Lars Von Trier film as “Mamma Mia!” echoed the same “relaxed” feeling as leading a Von Trier film like “Nymphomaniac” or “Dogville.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever felt more relaxed on a movie set,” Skarsgård told Vogue of “Mamma Mia!,” adding, “except with Lars von Trier — which I know sounds strange. But his films are very arthouse, to where I always felt like I could take risks, and it was the same with ‘Mamma Mia!'”
He continued, “The thing you want to achieve in a film is real life, which is hard to capture and cannot be done without you feeling safe. You can be skilled and elegant, but the charm of the film is that we were all enjoying ourselves immensely.”

Keeping it in the family is very much a Hollywood tradition at this point, and in the 21st century acting families are still thriving. Whether it be Cuba Gooding Jr.’s son Mason joining the cast of the last two Scream movies, Lily-Rose Depp leading The Idol, Maya Hawke becoming a fan favorite in Stranger Things, or Ethan Peck (grandson of Gregory) roaming the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek, there’s always a new generation of nepo babies lurching from crib to screen.
But one man is overwhelmingly leading the pack in terms of famous male offspring these days. A man who could conceivably consider the Kardashians his Warios. And that’s Stellan Skarsgård.

Jane Birkin, the beloved British-French actor and singer who spent most of her life in France and is known for a tumultuous relationship with French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, died on Sunday at her home in Paris, according to Le Parisien newspaper. She was 76.
No cause of death has yet been confirmed.
Birkin was best known internationally for her steamy 1969 duet “Je t’aime… moi non plus” which she sang with Gainsbourg, one year after meeting him on the shoot of Pierre Grimblat’s “Slogan.” Although she hadn’t broken through at the time, she had a small but memorable part in Michelangelo Antonioni’s sultry 1966 film “Blow Up.”
Together, Birkin and Gainsbourg had a daughter, the actor and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg. After splitting in 1980, the pair remained close and pursued their artistic collaboration. Birkin was creatively involved in three albums by Gainsbourg, “Baby Alone in Babylone” in 1983, “Lost Song” in...

The cast of MaXXXine includes a familiar face from the X trilogy, Mia Goth, backed up by such iconic actors as Kevin Bacon, Giancarlo Esposito, and Michelle Monaghan in supporting character roles. Described as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Boogie Nights, X was a typical grindhouse slasher movie with a pair of diabolical killers and a group of sexually active youngsters for them to pick off one by one. Its follow-up, the prequel Pearl, filled in its titular killer’s complicated backstory as she succumbed to her bloodlust and murdered everyone close to her while awaiting her husband’s return from the battlefields of World War I.

When Warner Bros. premiered Don’t Worry Darling at the Venice Film Festival last year, the studio must have been hoping reports of production problems and on-set disputes for Olivia Wilde’s new film would be replaced with glossy glamour shots of the film’s A-list stars, Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, strutting the Lido’s red carpet.
Instead, they got #Spitgate.
A short video shot from the gallery during Don’t Worry‘s premiere, which, if you squint, purports to show Styles spitting on co-star Chris Pine just before he sits down next to him, became all anyone wanted to talk about. The video, viewed millions of times online, was given the Zapruder treatment. Instead of discussing Wilde’s stylish feminist thriller, Pugh’s performance or the shocking last-reel twist, the discussion focused on whether Harry did or didn’t gob on Chris, something Pine strongly denied.

Not yet thirty years old, Mia Goth has already collaborated with several world-renowned filmmakers for her willingness to follow their most demented muses. Her girlish appearance strikes a shocking contrast with the atrocity exhibitions that she gravitates toward: eagerly taking to sexual grooming in Lars Von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac;” undergoing forcible insemination and grisly spaghettification with Claire Denis in “High Life;” becoming an insane asylum’s incestuous princess for Gore Verbinski in “A Cure for Wellness;” witnessing her own disembowelment as part of the orgiastic blood ritual Luca Guadagnino that’s the grand finale to “Suspiria;” manifesting a century of madness for Ti West’s in-progress trio of period pieces of “X,” “Pearl,” and the upcoming “Maxxxine.” And so it’s no surprise that Goth’s latest outing is another twisted affair: Brandon Cronenberg‘s “Infinity Pool,” which takes place at a Mediterranean beach resort that hides a violent and depraved sub-culture.

Mia Goth has been a secret weapon of auteurs ever since her preternatural debut in Lars von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac” at 18. Since then, she has been a scene-stealer in films by Luca Guadagnino (2018’s “Suspiria”), Claire Denis (2018’s “High Life”) and Autumn de Wilde (2020’s “Emma”). Her profile exploded last year after she starred in Ti West’s twin horror films “X” and “Pearl.” She co-wrote the latter, which centers on a girl intoxicated by the idea of stardom and desperate to escape her dreary life on a farm. Goth’s next project is the eagerly anticipated Sundance film “Infinity Pool,” a psychological thriller directed by “Possessor” helmer Brandon Cronenberg.

Plot: A mysterious voice calls upon the sleep walker, Karen, during a nightmare. The Kingdom is in need of her assistance, and at the hospital, she finds an ally in the porter, Bulder.
Review: Lars Von Trier is a filmmaker who has amassed a cult following thanks to his unique brand of storytelling and boundary-pushing cinematic experiments. From Melancholia to Antichrist, Nymphomaniac to Breaking the Waves, Von Trier has accomplished everything from musicals to dramas and more. His exercise in small-screen storytelling, The Kingdom (aka Riget), has itself garnered a distinctive cult following for its combination of medical soap operas and supernatural thrillers. Spread over two series of four episodes each that premiered in 1994 and 1997, The Kingdom also spawned an English-language remake courtesy of Stephen King. Now, twenty-five years since the series left off, Von Trier concludes The Kingdom with a five-episode closing series subtitled Exodus. An absurd blend of...

It's astounding how quickly Mia Goth has cemented herself in popular culture as not just an incredibly talented actress, but one with an intuitive sense of what projects suit her best. The London-born actress, who made her feature film debut back in 2013 with Lars von Trier's "Nymphomaniac," has become a staple of arthouse drama, thriller, and horror genre cinema. Her ability to channel both syrupy sweetness and malevolent darkness makes her a versatile addition to any film, traits that brought her into the mainstream with Ti West's "X" and prequel "Pearl" in 2022.
With her star set to shine brighter than ever following the wildly successful release of "Pearl," we've ranked all 12 feature films starring Mia Goth from worst to best. Frankly, it's a testament to her taste as a performer that we'd still recommend checking them all out, even if some films are more enjoyable than others.
