Rose Byrne in If I Had Legs I'd Kick You (2025)
The 2025 New York Film Festival has announced the selections for its Currents lineup.

The international showcase of daring work from adventurous new voices and inventive artists includes 16 feature films and 24 short films from 28 countries.

The Currents centerpiece selection is the U.S. premiere of Ben Rivers’ Mare’s Nest, described by Film at Lincoln Center, which presents the NYFF, as “an enigmatic road movie set in a post-apocalyptic world ruled by children.”

Other highlights in the Currents slate include the New York premieres of Radu Jude’s Dracula and Kamal Aljafari’s With Hasan in Gaza.

“In a film landscape that is so often homogeneous by design, this year’s Currents lineup is energizing for being a showcase of the boundless possibilities of cinematic language,” NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim said in a statement. “Resurrecting old technologies and subverting new ones, the filmmakers and artists here use an ingenious array...

Why Ronald Reagan Was Terrified Of A Beloved '80s Movie
Image
Ever since the United States dropped the atomic bombs Fat Man and Little Boy on, respectively, the Japanese cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, the world has known with terrifying certainty that humanity possesses the power to end all life on Earth -- or, at least, most of it. Cockroaches might pull through. When Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) entered the picture and the planet's two superpowers, the USA and the Ussr, engaged in an arms race that produced arsenals capable of reducing the world to, in the words of Klaatu, a burned-out cinder, it's weird that the world didn't stand still, take to the streets en masse, and demand the elimination of all nuclear weapons in order to ensure their future, their children's future, their children's children's future, and so on.

When the world found itself on the verge of a full-scale nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, it...

Ghosts of Hiroshima: James Cameron’s New Movie Highlights Hollywood’s Weird Obsession With Atomic Mass Murder
Image
James Cameron’s upcoming movie Ghosts of Hiroshima promises a haunting portrayal of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Well, it’s not new that we are getting another historical movie set in the horror of the nuclear bombing in Japan. Now Cameron wants us to believe that his movie will finally do justice to the atomic bombing on the two islands.

But let’s not kid ourselves. This movie isn’t about reckoning with history. It seems yet another example of Hollywood’s grotesque obsession with glorifying nuclear annihilation in the name of empathy.

According to the Deadline report, James Cameron, the acclaimed director of the Avatar franchise, has announced his next feature will be Ghosts of Hiroshima. The movie will be a dramatic retelling of the atomic bombing of Japan.

This is the connection between the original Star Trek and Scrooged, The Goonies, and Throw Momma from the Train
Image
Here’s a trivia question for everyone: What’s the connection between Star Trek: The Original Series and the movies The Goonies, Throw Momma from the Train, and Scrooged? The answer is… Logan Ramsey, the late, great character actor whose career spanned from 1948 to 1999 and who would have turned 104 on March 21, 2025.

Star Trek fans will recall that Ramsey low-key chewed the scenery as Proconsul Claudius Marcus in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Bread and Circuses.” He’s the character who gave his slave, Drusilla (Lois Jewell), to Captain Kirk (William Shatner), so that Kirk could enjoy “some last hours as a man” before his execution. Sadly, Ramsey died of a heart attack at the age of 79 in 2000.

In addition to Star Trek, he counted among his many theater, movie, and television credits The Devil’s Disciple and The Great Indoors, both on stage; the films Head, Walking Tall, Any Which Way You Can,...

Image
The Berlin International Film Festival has announced its full lineup for the 55th Forum section, the festival’s sidebar focusing on experimental and avant-garde cinema.

Section head Barbara Wurm said the 2025 selection aims to showcase contemporary cinema that “moves beyond the cult and the commercial” while functioning as a “seismograph of our time.”

Cao Yiwen’s AI-driven What’s Next? poses a philosophical question about the future, while Su Hui-Yu’s The Trio Hall presents a pastiche featuring historical dictators engaged in theatrical performances.

Around half the films at this year’s Forum are documentaries, with highlights including Tatiana Fuentes Sadowski’s The Memory of Butterflies, a reconstruction of Indigenous slavery and colonial crimes; Lee Anne Schmitt’s Evidence, which explores...

What Happened To Danny Lyon After The Bikeriders
Image
Lyon's photography of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club inspired the film The Bikeriders, with Lyon even becoming a member himself. Lyon's work extended beyond The Bikeriders, focusing on socioeconomic issues, prisoners, and civil rights movements. Lyon's accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship and being inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame.

Danny Lyon, whose work served as the basis of The Bikeriders, enjoyed a long career beyond the events of the film. After spending several years traveling with and photographing the Outlaws Motorcycle Club, Lyon's original work was published in a 1968 photo book titled The Bikeriders. As an artist, Lyon is known for immersing himself in his subject, even becoming a full Outlaw member from 1966-1967. His photography and recorded interviews during this time helped inform the acting of The Bikeriders cast and the production teams greater understanding of The Bikeriders cultural context.

Lyon's influence on The Bikeriders film is evident.

Dianne Crittenden Dies: ‘Star Wars’ Casting Director Who Worked On ‘Pretty Woman’, ‘Spider-Man 2’ & Many Others Was 82
Image
Dianne Crittenden, casting director on the original Star Wars who also worked on Pretty Woman, Spider-Man 2 and dozens of other films during a 40-year career, died March 19 at her home in Pacific Palisades. She was 82.

Her first project as casting director was Terrence Malick’s 1973 drama Badlands, starring Martin Sheen-Sissy Spacek, on which Bruce Springsteen based his song “Nebraska” a decade later. Crittenden worked on a few other films and TV shows, including the Emmy-winning 1976 Sally Field miniseries Sybil, before land the casting-director role of a lifetime — a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

Oppenheimer's JFK Connection Is Bigger Than The John F. Kennedy Namedrop Indicates
Image
Oppenheimer's change in opinion about nuclear weapons after witnessing the devastation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki put him at odds with physicist Lewis Strauss, as depicted in the movie. The movie shows Strauss sabotaging Oppenheimer behind the scenes and attempting to strip him of his security clearance for his political affiliations. Despite Strauss's efforts, Oppenheimer's reputation was eventually restored when President John F. Kennedy invited him to a White House dinner and President Lyndon B. Johnson, at the behest of JFK, awarded him the Enrico Fermi Award.

Oppenheimer name-drops President John F. Kennedy, but the scientist's connection to JFK is more significant than indicated. Christopher Nolan's most recent movie, Oppenheimer, explores the life of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer leading up to, during, and after the Manhattan Project. After the detonation of Little Boy and Fat Man on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the father of the atomic bomb rightfully developed conflicting feelings about nuclear weapons.

Sound of Freedom Gets Streaming Release Date As Bidding War Concludes
Image
Sound of Freedom, directed by Alejandro Monteverde, was initially shelved after Disney's purchase of Fox but found success in theaters, grossing $242 million globally. Prime Video has won the bidding war for the streaming rights to Sound of Freedom, which will premiere on the platform on December 26. The film focuses on Tim Ballard and his team's efforts to rescue children from child trafficking, with Jim Caviezel starring as Ballard.

After its controversial but successful run in theaters, Sound of Freedom is getting ready to be released on streaming, after a heated war between several companies to gain the rights to distribute one of the most debated films of the year.

Directed by Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Monteverde, Sound of Freedom hit theaters in July, after being shelved for several years following Disney's purchase of Fox. Angel Studios, a production company focused on Christian-themed stories, managed to buy it, prompting a strong advertising campaign for its release.

Oppenheimer: Why Christopher Nolan Didn't Show the Bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima
Image
After watching Christopher Nolan's latest masterpiece of a blockbuster Oppenheimer, many have been wondering why the visionary filmmaker didn't actually depict either of the infamous uses of the nuclear bombs in WWII.

The drearily dark drama follows the real-life theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (played brilliantly by Cillian Murphy), the man "who became Death" by giving humanity the power to destroy itself as the architect of the atomic bomb. So it would make sense to actually show the real-life uses of the most powerful and the most horrifying weapons ever made when the United States deployed "Fat Man" and "Little Boy" on the Japanese cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The explosions killed as many as 226,000 people, mostly civilians, while the radiation left even more with horrible diseases and terrible disfigurements for the rest of their short lives.

One of the biggest themes of the whole film is the evil effects of the bombs,...

This Other 2023 Movie About The Atom Bomb's Creation Is A Must-See After Oppenheimer
Image
Oppenheimer ignited interest in the creation of the atomic bomb, but there are other films, like A Compassionate Spy, that explore different perspectives on the topic. A Compassionate Spy focuses on Theodore Hall, a physicist who was also a Soviet spy during the Manhattan Project, and delves into his story. Despite being discovered as a Soviet informant, Theodore Hall was never charged with treason due to various reasons, including the cracked Venona code.

Oppenheimer is one of the most successful movies of the summer, but as it turns out, it isn't this summer's only must-see movie about the creation of the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer has taken the world by storm, with the tale of J. Robert Oppenheimer's role in the creation of Los Alamos and the Trinity nuclear test being one of the most popular stories of the summer. However, there is much more to the story of the...

How This 1989 Atomic Bomb Creation Film Compares to Oppenheimer
Image
As Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has been accompanied by great anticipation and has brought renewed attention to the fascinating career and life of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, most people are unaware of, or have forgotten, Fat Man and Little Boy, which was the last feature film to cover the creation and launch of the world’s first atomic bomb.

Released in October 1989, when Nolan was still a teenager, Fat Man and Little Boy, like Oppenheimer, arrived with great fanfare. Directed by Roland Joffe, the director of the Oscar-nominated films The Killing Fields and The Mission, and starring the legendary Paul Newman, and with such a compelling story to tell, Fat Man and Little Boy was regarded as a prestigious Hollywood project with serious Academy Award potential.

However, Fat Man and Little Boy, which grossed less than $4 million at the domestic box office against a production budget of $30 million, quickly became a commercial and critical failure.

Oppenheimer Review
Image
Plot: During a pivotal time in World War II, Professor Robert Oppenheimer is chosen by the army to head up the Manhattan Project, the focus being creating the first nuclear weapon the Earth has ever seen. Gathering scientists from all over the world, Oppenheimer’s obsession with finishing the bomb before the Nazis has an overwhelming impact on his personal life, in ways both immediately obvious and impossible to predict.

Review: Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is a startling, mesmerizing experience, not one easy to explain or sum up. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Nolan movie if it were, but the film sees the writer-director at the height of his powers as filmmaker and storyteller – not to mention nimble time-jumper. Perhaps the most important film of the director’s career thus far, Oppenheimer is an old fashioned Hollywood biopic/historical epic in the way it’s filled with great...

Box office: How did ‘Sound of Freedom’ become the $85 million hit of the summer?
Image
This past weekend, a movie took second place at the box office with $27 million, surpassing two massive franchise sequels, but there were other reasons why it might turn some heads in Hollywood.

That movie was Angel Studios’ “Sound of Freedom,” a drama starring Jim Caviezel (“The Passion of the Christ”) as government agent Tim Ballard, who gives up his job to go on dangerous missions to save children in third-world countries from sex trafficking. Co-written and directed by Alejandro Monteverde (“Little Boy”), the film co-stars Oscar winner Mira Sorvino and Bill Camp.

Normally, an indie drama about a difficult topic would barely get released in more than a few hundred theaters, if that, but Angel Studios released “Sound of Freedom” wide with a brilliant marketing campaign to pay it forward in terms of buying tickets for others to see it.

These Underrated Jurassic Park Performances Aren't Talked About Nearly Enough
Image
One thing that distinguishes 1993's Jurassic Park from a host of other Steven Spielberg films from the late 1980s and early 1990s is the cast. Unlike most blockbusters of the period, Spielberg opted to stay away from big names: Sam Neill's most prominent Hollywood role prior to his outing as Alan Grant had been opposite Sean Connery as the second-in-command of a Soviet submarine in The Hunt for Red October (1990), while Laura Dern – now bona fide Hollywood royalty – had only lately come to prominence with performances in dramas such as Fat Man and Little Boy (1989) and Rambling Rose (1991).

This approach extended to the film's supporting cast, with only Richard Attenborough (Hammond) and, to a lesser extent, a pre-Independence Day Jeff Goldblum (Malcolm) having big-name recognition. It's no wonder that three other members of the cast get surprisingly little acknowledgment from audiences – despite the fact that their pitch-perfect work in...

6 Reasons Why It’s Always Sunny Is Ready For A Nightmare Cometh Sequel
Image
"The Nightman Cometh" is generally regarded as one of the cleverest episodes of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and it's about time the 2008 episode got a sequel. The comedy series' dark humor and hilariously vulgar and selfish characters have always been the big appeal of the show, and "The Nightman Cometh" perfectly encapsulates those elements with a musical twist. Charlie writes and directs the titular musical to impress the Waitress and attempts to manipulate her into marrying him. The songs in the musical hint at Charlie's trauma and abusive past, and the catchiness of the music make the lyrics all the more disturbing.

"The Nightman Cometh" is the best It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode, and ever since the season four finale, the show has become increasingly musical. It has built a tradition of sequel episodes. The episode perfectly lends itself to a sequel episode, and there's no doubt that...

Joe Rogan Opens His Anti-Cancel Culture Club in Austin
Image
“Unvaxxed Sperm” reads the poster held aloft by a woman standing outside the theater, and you know you’re in the right place: Joe Rogan’s new comedy club mecca. On Austin’s historic Sixth Street, Comedy Mothership enjoyed its opening night after two-and-a-half years of development.

Comedy Mothership is the comedian and podcaster’s effort to launch what he’s described as an ideal venue for comics and an effort to terraform the Texas capitol into a major live comedy hub. When tickets for the opening week of shows went on sale (for a surprisingly reasonable $40 per person), they sold out within minutes. Tickets are being re-sold online for $500.

“I’m drunk and on mushrooms in my new club!” exclaimed Rogan while wearing a rather odd Obi-Wan-like sweater. “This is as high as I’ve ever been onstage. I need to connect with this moment … You can’t fire me from my own club,...

South by Southwest: An Interview with Danny Lyon, Filmmaker
Image
Issue 2 of Notebook magazine includes an original essay by Lyon, accompanied by a piece about the self-distribution of his works. The issue is currently available in select stores around the world. In September 1962, Danny Lyon, a history and philosophy student at the University of Chicago, flew to Jackson, Mississippi to photograph voter registration workers for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (Sncc). By 1963, Lyon was working as Sncc’s in-house photographer, and for the next two-plus years he would document nearly every major moment of the Southern Civil Rights Movement, including the March on Washington and historic demonstrations led by John Lewis and Martin Luther King Jr., among others. If you’ve seen a photo from this era in a newspaper, magazine, or history book, there’s a good chance it was taken by Lyon. But while the artist’s contemporaneous photos of an outlaw Chicago motorcycle gang and, later, Texas...

Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
Oppenheimer: Christopher Nolan’s latest gets a trailer
Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
Universal just dropped a bomb on everyone expecting a quiet Sunday night, with them finally unveiling the new, full-length trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Now, if you were one of the many folks to see Avatar: The Way of Water this weekend, you’ve already seen this, and indeed, the IMAX-shot movie promises to be a visual spectacle. The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the enigmatic scientist who’s considered the father of the A-bomb.

The Oppenheimer story was previously made into a (pretty decent) movie in the eighties called Fat Man and Little Boy (named after the two A-bombs dropped on Japan), but Nolan’s epic seems to be a whole other ballgame. The trailer is spectacular and focuses mainly on what could be a career-defining performance from the always-great Murphy. Emily Blunt co-stars as his wife, Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, a scientist in her own right,...

Oppenheimer Was A Natural Fit For Cillian Murphy After Peaky Blinders
Image
There was a time when it seemed like Cillian Murphy was destined for movie superstardom. The Irish actor was mesmerizing in early-2000s films like "28 Days Later," "Batman Begins," "Red Eye" and "Breakfast on Pluto." But while he's remained busy over the years, Hollywood just couldn't figure out what to do with him, so he wound up bouncing from leads to supporting roles for a bit until he found a role that fit him like a tweed suit in Tommy Shelby, the crime boss of "Peaky Blinders."

Now that Steven Knight's gangster series has come to a close after six knockabout seasons, Murphy has been gifted a prime opportunity to reestablish himself as a big-screen draw in Christopher Nolan's forthcoming "Oppenheimer." Murphy has been cast as the physicist who spearheaded the Manhattan Project's development of the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer's triumph resulted in the end of World...

Image
Exclusive: Christiana Dell’Anna (Gomorrah), John Lithgow (The Crown), David Morse (The Green Mile), Rolando Villazón (La Bohèmme) and more will star in an Untitled Cabrini Film from Alejandro Monteverde.

The film tells the story of Francesca Cabrini, one of the greatest entrepreneurs of the 19th Century, who began with nothing and created the largest multinational charitable empire the world had ever known, her accomplishments equaling those of Vanderbilt and Rockefeller. While Cabrini was faced in her time with the sexism and virulent anti-Italian bigotry of 19th century America, she overcame every obstacle through relentless perseverance and business skill, eventually building schools, orphanages and hospitals that transformed the lives of immigrants worldwide.

The Untitled Cabrini Film also stars Montserrat Espadalé, Romana Maggiora Vergano, Patch Darragh, Jeremy Bobb, Virginia Bocelli, Andrew Polk, and Giampiero Judica.

The Francesca Films pic’s producers include Academy Award and BAFTA Award winner Jonathan Sanger and Leo Severino. Rod Barr wrote the script; he collaborated on the story with TIFF’s People’s Choice Award winner Monteverde.

The film is currently in production in New York; the shoot will wrap up in Rome this fall. The project was the brainchild of financier Eustace Wolfington, whose passion for the story of Francesca Cabrini began over 60 years ago.

“The minute I learned of Cabrini’s life story, I realized this was a story that deserved to be brought to the big screen,” said Wolfington. “As a pioneer of human rights long before today, her story will be an inspiration to today’s pioneers of human rights which makes her story and unprecedented accomplishments as relevant today as ever.”

“As an immigrant myself, I am honored to be able to shine a light on the astonishing story of a true warrior of social justice who transformed the lives of immigrants worldwide,” said Monteverde. “Cabrini was a pioneer of women’s empowerment, making her story as relevant today as in the 1890’s. This picture – like Cabrini herself – is surprising, courageous, gritty… and deeply inspirational.”

“In a time when the achievements of women in every sphere of life have inspired a new generation, it is fascinating to contemplate the work of Francesca Cabrini, an Italian immigrant who came to New York in 1889. She would fit perfectly as a leader in today’s world,” added Sanger.

Christiana Dell’Anna’s film credits include Tensione superficiali, Mr. Happiness and more. She has appeared on the small screen in such series as Gomorrah (HBO Max) and Trust (FX). She’s represented in the U.S. by Cavalry Media, and by Volver Consulenze Artistiche in Italy.

A two-time Oscar nominee, John Lithgow recently earned his 13th Emmy nomination for his supporting turn in HBO’s reimagining of Perry Mason. He’ll next appear in Showtime’s Dexter revival, reprising his role as Arthur Mitchell (aka The Trinity Killer), and in FX’s The Old Man. His recent film credits include Bombshell, Late Night and Pitch Perfect 3. Additional TV credits include The Crown, Trial & Error and 3rd Rock from the Sun. Lithgow is repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and attorney Don Steele at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller & Gellman.

Two-time Emmy nominee David Morse will soon appear in Netflix drama The Chair, opposite Sandra Oh. His recent TV credits include The Good Lord Bird, Blindspot, The Morning Show, The Deuce and Escape at Dannemora. Recent film credits include Thank You for Your Service and Concussion. Morse is repped by UTA, Kipperman Management, Arcieri & Associates, and attorney Diane Golden at Katz Golden Lerner.

Rolando Villazón is an opera singer and director whose credits include Mozart in Prague: Rolando Villazón on Don Giovanni, La Bohèmme and La Traviata. He is repped by Columbia Artists Management.

Monteverde is represented by Sentient Entertainment and attorney Sean A. Marks of Marks Law Group.

Exclusive: Cristiana Dell’Anna, star of the HBO Max crime series Gomorrah, has landed the lead role of U.S. Catholic nun Frances Xavier Cabrini in Alejandro Monteverde’s true story feature retelling Cabrini. Production starts June 28 in Buffalo, NY and NYC.

Mother Cabrini was an Italian-American Roman Catholic nun who founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a Catholic religious institute that was a major support to her fellow Italian immigrants to the United States. Her beautification miracle involved restoring the sight of a day-old baby, Peter Smith, who had been blinded by a 50% silver nitrate solution instead of the normal 1% solution in the child’s eyes. Her canonization miracle involved the healing of a terminally ill member of her congregation.

Warren Berlinger Dies: ‘Happy Days’, ‘Cannonball Run’ Actor Was 83

Warren Berlinger, a busy character actor whose numerous roles made him one of TV’s most familiar faces from the Kraft Theatre golden age through the Grace and Frankie streaming era, died Wednesday at the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Valencia, California. He was 83.

Kevin Can Wait Season 1 Review
One episode was provided prior to broadcast.

Kevin James is a simple entertainer. His blue collar-friendly brand is designed to appeal to undemanding middle-aged schlubs, or at the very least, easy-to-please hard-working people who just want to kick their feet back, gulp down a couple beers and enjoy themselves for a few hours. The kind of people who don’t expect more than the familiar pleasures they’ve been given before. And there’s nothing particularly wrong with that either. James’ style might be boring and repetitive to some of us (well, maybe most of us), but he’s a smart businessman. He knows what his fans expect from him, and he tries to meet their modest demands. That logic drives Kevin Can Wait, James’ return to CBS and broadcast television.

It’s been nine years since James stepped away from King of Queens, pursing a career on the big...

Little Boy movie review: faith-based bomb
A shamefully miscalculated tale of whimsy and come-to-Jesus inspiration with a bizarrely inappropriate haze of Norman Rockwell-esque nostalgia. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of “faith-based” movies

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

In a seaside town “like you see in postcards” in 1940s California, eight-year-old Pepper Flynt Busbee (Jakob Salvati: Escape from Tomorrow) is sad, because his best friend — his father (Michael Rapaport: The Heat, Hitch) — has gone off to fight against the Japs in the Pacific. Mom (Emily Watson: Everest, A Royal Night Out) was always the one to bring the two buddies back down to Earth from their pretend adventures, but she cannot stop Pepper now: he has been convinced by comic-book and movie-serial hero Ben Eagle the Magician (Ben Chaplin: Cinderella, War Book) and local priest Father Oliver (Tom Wilkinson: Unfinished Business,...
