Trey Edward Shults
‘Waves’ Film Review: Searing Father-Son Drama Examines Race and Masculinity
Trey Edward Shults
It’s rare that the film you least expected to ends up consuming prime real estate in your mind as much as writer-director Trey Edward Shults’ “Waves” has. This quiet festival darling in the guise of a humdrum family drama boasts a top-notch cast — including Renee Elise Goldsberry (“The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”), Sterling K. Brown, and Kelvin Harrison, Jr. — and tension as tight as a rubber band.

To call “Waves” a pressure cooker would be underselling it. Shults provocatively examines black masculinity and the burden of living up to a societal standard, as well as a parental one. He accomplishes this through the story of Tyler (Harrison), a high-school star wrestler who initially seems like an average teenage boy. He has a cute girlfriend, Alexis. He parties, does some drugs — but apparently not enough to throw him off his wrestling game, God forbid. And like many young men,...

Amenábar’s awaited “While at War” will compete in main competition, where it will face off, among Spanish titles announced Friday by the San Sebastian Festival, with banner Basque title “The Endless Trench” and“The Thief’s Daughter,” the already buzzy feature debut of Catalan Belén Funes.

Darín stars in and co-produces “Heroic Losers” which receives a Special Screening. Daniel Sánchez-Arevalo’s “Seventeen” will play out of competition – the first time a Netflix Original Film makes San Sebastian’s Official Selection cut.

A New Generation of Women Filmmakers on the Rise in Catalonia
Laureled abroad and lauded at home, a young generation of women Catalan filmmakers started breaking through two years ago, led by Carla Simon’s 2017 Berlin first-feature winner “Summer 93.” Since then a bevy of female directors have emerged, making intimate character-driven dramas rich in observational psychological detail, some drawn from personal experience.

The ranks of women Catalan helmers have swelled substantially with, in various states of production, Clara Roquet’s “Libertad,” Belén Funes’ “A Thief’s Daughter,” Ángeles Hernández ’s “Isaac,” Lucía Alemany’s “Innocence” and Pilar Palomero’s “Girls.”

“It’s remarkable the impact that so-called small films have had on festival circuits,” says Roquet, whose “Libertad” won the Arte Kino Intl. Prize at San Sebastian’s Europe-Latin American Co-Production Forum in September.

Many, like Simón, whose “Alcarrás” was a Berlinale Co-Production Market winner in February, are onto their second or even third feature.

Sergi López at an event for Peindre ou faire l'amour (2005)
Lucía Alemany’s ‘Innocence’ Rolls with Sergi López, Laia Marull (Exclusive)
Sergi López at an event for Peindre ou faire l'amour (2005)
Madrid — Sergi López and Laia Marull co-star in rites-of-passage drama “La Inocencia” (Innocence), the feature debut of Lucía Alemany, a key name in a generation of often very young women cineastes now energizing Catalan cinema.

Starring Carmen Arrufet in her first lead role, and Joel Bosqued (“Que baje dios y lo vea”), “Innocence” marks a follow-up to Alemany’s multi-prized short “14 Years and a Day.” Produced by Morena Films, and a take on adolescent angst, budding sexuality and daughter-mother conflict set in a nosy Spanish village where privacy is near impossible, the short marked out Alemany, an alum of Barcelona’s Escac film school, as very much a director to track.

In production from Aug. 6 in Alemany’s home village of Traiguera, in the region of Castellón, central eastern Spain, “Innocence” comes with strong backing. Alemany has been championed by Iciar Bollaín, one of Spain’s most foremost women directors,...

Fantasia Interview with director Saku Sakamoto and producer Osamu Fukutani: I prefer things stuffed with what I really want to do than simple, well-made, fine works
Saku Sakamoto graduated from Tama Art University’s Department of Graphic Design in 2000. His short animated works such as Makafushigi (’00) and Fisherman (’02) were selected for the Hiroshima International Animation Festival and received the first place Kirin Art Award. Since then, he has received numerous awards and his work has been introduced internationally through more than 10 film festivals including the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

He began his career as a freelance animation creator in 2002 and has worked with short films, opening titles for TV shows, commercials, promotional videos, visual effects for movies, and as a director and art director. He soon mastered these techniques, thus earning him the nickname “transcendent painter”. Recent works include creating digital effects for Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence directed by Mamori Oshii and directing the original anime “Mattsu, Yamma and Moburi: ―The mystery of the seven gems and the flying castle”― and “Mattsu, Yamma and...

John Malkovich at an event for La légende de Beowulf (2007)
John Malkovich To Play Hercule Poirot In ‘The ABC Murders’ For BBC One
John Malkovich at an event for La légende de Beowulf (2007)
The next installment in BBC One’s collection of Agatha Christie stories will be The ABC Murders. Sarah Phelps is adapting the classic 1936 title with John Malkovich as Hercule Poirot and Rupert Grint as Inspector Crome. Filming is due to begin in June on the three-part drama that marks the return of Poirot to television and continues BBC One and Agatha Christie Limited’s production deal that will see the latter and Mammoth Screen deliver six more Christie adaptations. Amazon has U.S. rights.

Set in the 1930s, a time when Britain is dangerously divided and suspicion and hatred are on the rise, the story sees Poirot face a serial killer known only as A.B.C. As the body count rises, the only clue is a copy of The ABC Railway Guide at each crime scene. Poirot’s investigations are continuously thwarted by an enemy determined to outsmart him. If Poirot is to match his nemesis,...

Innocence (2013)
Is 'The Tale' HBO's Most Controversial Movie Ever?
Innocence (2013)
Innocence is a slippery concept: We're never conscious of possessing it, only of having lost it. That's the conceit behind writer-director Jennifer Fox's extraordinary cinematic memoir The Tale (which begins airing May 26th on HBO) – a raw, personal chronicle of the sexual abuse she sustained as a child in the 1970s. More radically, however, is how this tough-to-watch, formally daring look back (starring Laura Dern as the filmmaker's screen avatar) simultaneously details the process through which she came to recognize her experience as abuse – an epiphany arrived at gradually,...

Concert Review: U2 Light Up the Forum on Experience + Innocence Tour
U2’s May 15 opener of its two-night stay at Los Angeles’ Fabulous Forum (the second is tonight) marked just a little under a year since the band sold out two dates at the Rose Bowl on their victory lap “Joshua Tree” tour, which ended up grossing $316 million for just 51 shows. Presumably, those who craved hearing the likes of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” “With or Without You,” “Bullet the Blue Sky” or “Where the Streets Have No Name” got their fill last time, because none of those concert staples is on the current set-list for the band’s new Experience + Innocence tour. This latest trek builds upon the previous 10-city North American outing in which the album titles were reversed.

Like that series of shows, the new indoor-arena concerts once more boast a giant, two-sided Led screen that bifurcates the venue three-quarters of the way from front to back,...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Rewatch: Innocence
We've reached the end of 2017! What better way to end off the year than with the aftermath of a shocking cliffhanger?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 2 Episode 14 shifted everything for our beloved Scoobies. This was when the series became darker and the era of Angelus started. As much as this sounds like a cliche, it was "must-see TV."

In case you need a refresher, join me in rewatching "Innocence."

When Angel lost his soul and he became Angelus, you couldn't have expected a more shocking twist. He went from brooding heartthrob to deadly psychopath in an instant. As a viewer back in 1998, I didn't expect him to turn evil.

He was always Buffy's tortured beau on the side of good.

What I loved about the pre-credits introduction was that it teased that something was amiss. The eerie song, Buffy waking up alone and Drusilla being overcome with visions built up the eventual twist.

The Woods | Blu-ray Review
Horror director Lucky McKee unfortunately remains one of those unknown, peripheral genre names, mostly thanks to a number of compromised or abandoned projects following his formidable 2002 debut, May. Over the past several years, he’s made headlines for 2011’s The Woman (another underrated gem from his filmography), and most recently the co-directed effort All Cheerleaders Die in 2013, an expansion of his 2001 short film, which is more or less the comically inclined romp you’d assume it to be. Prizing complex female characterizations, usually featuring muse Angela Bettis, McKee’s twisted visions, though few and far between, are enjoyable and entertaining, usually enhanced by a bit of subtext. About a decade ago, McKee’s sophomore feature, The Woods, would finally land on DVD in the Us following a limited festival circuit run, treated to a torturous release platform despite featuring several notable cast members. A period piece set amongst an all-girls...

Q&A with It Follows Composer Disasterpeace
Next Tuesday, David Robert Mitchell's It Follows comes out on Blu-ray from Anchor Bay Entertainment, RADiUS, and Dimension, and we caught up with composer Richard Vreeland, aka Disasterpeace, to discuss his superb score for the horror film.

I understand that writer/director David Robert Mitchell asked you to compose the music for It Follows after he played the 2012 video game Fez, which you also scored. How did he reach out to you and what were your initial thoughts about being offered to score a horror film?

Disasterpeace: David reached out by e-mail. I had a lot of thoughts! I had never scored a feature before, so I was excited about the opportunity, but also wanted to be really discerning before making such a big decision. It was tough to make a decision just based on the script, especially for something as unusual as It Follows' premise, but seeing...

If Only The Irony Of "Innocence" Extended Beyond The Title
What is it about Hamilton makes kids want to kill themselves?

If a movie is crisp and well-lit, I'll forgive it almost anything. Innocence (2014) is a perfect example. Beckett (Sophie Curtis) is dealing with the sudden death of her mother. She's moved into New York City and starting up at a new school, Hamilton, which is inexplicably run by a group of handsome, young women. Handsome, young, creepy women. Chief creep among them is the nurse, Pamela (Kelly Reilly), who doles out the meds and slowly takes the role of Beckett's mother figure, including dating her widowed father. But a series of suicides and persistent hallucination makes Beckett suspicious of just what's going on at Hamilton exactly. I'm not sure if Beckett isn't too oblivious or lethargic to go Nancy Drewing around New York City.

The Vice of Virtue: Brougher’s Latest Achieves Varied Results

Those familiar with Hilary Brougher’s offbeat sensibilities, as showcased in her delightful 1997 debut The Sticky Fingers of Time, and the Tilda Swinton headlined drama Stephanie Daley (2006), will be happy to know that her long awaited third film has arrived, an adaptation of Jane Mendelsohn’s 2000 Young Adult novel, Innocence. A project first announced several years ago with a revolving list of high profile names announced as being attached (Julianne Moore, Chloe Sevigny, and Abigail Breslin, for instance), it seems Brougher’s had a bit of difficulty getting this project put together, which is evident in the final product, a film reminiscent of vintage stabs at Ya thrillers back in the 70s and 80s, such as several classic Disney titles. While it never quite succeeds as an effective thriller, Brougher manages to strike a moody ambience with this familiar material,...

Casey Anthony Update: Lawyer Opens Up About Her Life Post Acquittal
Casey Anthony was acquitted of the murder of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee Anthony three years ago, but her lawyer says her life remains like that of a prisoner.

Casey Anthony’s Lawyer Maintains Her Innocence

Following Anthony’s acquittal by a 12-person jury on July 5, 2011, there was a public outcry that she'd gotten away with murder. After hearing both the prosecution and the defense team, the overall opinion of the public was that Anthony had killed her daughter. It was believed that the jury had gotten it wrong and/or that the prosecution had fumbled a sure conviction.

Reputable Florida lawyer Cheney Mason, who joined Anthony’s defense team – led by Jose Baez – pro bono, maintains his client’s innocence to this day, replying, “Oh, yes,” when asked if Anthony could look him in the eye and say she didn’t commit the crime for which she was to stand trial.

Now HBO Films is looking to tell Hovick’s true story beyond the musical fable with Madame Rose, a movie in development, which has Adam Shankman (Hairspray) set to direct and executive produce. Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot are executive producing via their company Offspring Entertainment. The project is expected to draw top talent for the title role, which has been played in Gypsy‘s stage productions and movie and TV adaptations by such actresses as Ethel Merman,...

2013 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Hilary Brougher’s Innocence
Hilary Brougher made a splash at the fest with her sophomore Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award winning drama Stephanie Daley (Sundance ’06) but it’s been nada since this minor stroke of genius. After some early casting hiccups, Brougher’s adaptation of Jane Mendelsohn’s 2000 teen novel of the same name found Sophie Curtis, Kelly Reilly and Graham Phillips toplining. Production took place during the summer, with post production beginning in August, which means with some overtime work, Innocence – a Killer Films’ production could be ready for a showcase. Brougher reteams with cinematographer David Rush Morrison and editor Keith Reamer and with Production Designer Susan Block (The Believer, Grace Is Gone) also contributes.

Gist: Co-written by Brougher and Tristine Skyler, set in NYC, this centers on a moody teenager who discovers her elite private school is home to a vampire gang.

Production Co./Producers: Killer Films’ Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon

Prediction: Premieres Program

Matt Bomer and Jill Zarin in FBI: Duo très spécial (2009)
Where Are The Fired 'Real Housewives' Now?
Matt Bomer and Jill Zarin in FBI: Duo très spécial (2009)
"The Real Housewives of New York City" returns Monday night for the first time since we broke the story that Jill Zarin, Kelly Bensimon and Alex McCord had been fired. And although the three former cast members have not been spending the past several months filming Season 5, that doesn't mean these ladies have disappeared from the public eye altogether.

"I have had the highest highs and lowest lows, but right now I'm very peaceful," Jill tells me. "I have a little anxiety with the show coming back, because I have never had this outpouring of love from fans all over the world saying they will miss me. I didn't expect they would miss me. That's the circle of life; I thought they would move straight on to the new girls."

Jill plans to auction off all her clothes from Seasons 1 to 4 and donate the money to charitable causes. She says...

Conjuring : Les Dossiers Warren (2013)
[1] Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor are in talks to join Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in James Wan's upcoming thriller, formerly called The Conjuring. The film, which is now going by the working title Untitled Warren Files Project, centers around a husband and wife paranormal investigation team (Wilson and Farmiga) dealing with spirits in a Rhode Island farmhouse. Livingston and Taylor would play a couple that moves into the farmhouse with their children, and are terrorized by the supernatural beings who reside there. The story is inspired by the real-life tale of the Perron family and paranormal experts Ed and Lorraine Warren in the 1970s. Livingston will next appear in HBO Films' Game Change, which premieres March 10, and this summer's The Odd Life of Timothy Green. Taylor co-stars in Paul Weitz's Being Flynn, which opens March 2. Top 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2012: #56. Hilary Brougher's Innocence
#56. Innocence Director: Hilary BrougherWriter: Tristine SkylerProducers: Killer Films' Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon Distributor: Rights Available The Gist: An adaptation of Jane Mendelsohn's dark coming-of-age novel, this is about a schoolgirl's loss of innocence...(more) Cast: Abigail Breslin and Chloë Sevigny List Worthy Reasons...: Among the several contemporary indie vampire flicks in this top 100 list (more to come in 2013 with Jim Jarmusch interested in the genre), it is this coming-of-ager that we feel holds the most promise as the form, from the book description, is reminiscent of some of those plot-twisting Spanish thriller titles. The Killer FIlms folks usually don't do horror but instead the human condition, and that the one helming the pic is Stephanie Daley's Brougher - who gave us a strong, underappreciated directing debut which did feature some rather strong female performances means that with a better production value we see this female filmmaker making huge strides.

Abigail Breslin to Star in Frightening Indie Drama ‘The Class Project’
Since her Oscar-nominated turn in Little Miss Sunshine, the talented Abigail Breslin has been working, for the most part, with lighter fare — No Reservations; Definitely, Maybe; Rango; and even Zombieland, which has a consistently comedic air to it. Her upcoming commitments, however, point toward a change in the atmosphere.

She’s already signed on to Hilary Brougher‘s Innocence, a drama-thriller that involves vampires nesting in a private school. It’s her latest project, though, that is the real eye-opener. It’s titled The Class Project, and Breslin will star as one of “two Canadian sisters who, tired of their mother’s alcoholism and abusive boyfriends, plot to kill her.” [Variety]

The film is based on Bob Mitchell‘s book The Class Project: How To Kill a Mother: The True Story of Canada’s Infamous Bathtub Girls, which has been adapted by Fabrizio Filippo and Adam Till. Stan Brooks will handle the directing duties,...

Abigail Breslin Gets The Class Project
Alan Arkin, Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, Paul Dano, and Abigail Breslin in Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
She might have been all sweetness and light in Nim’s Island and Little Miss Sunshine, but Abigail Breslin is about to prove she can have murder on her mind too, signing on to tough indie drama The Class Project. It may sound like an educational fable, but Project actually follows two sisters who get so sick of their mother’s drinking problems and string of abusive, equally drunken boyfriends that they decide to kill her. Wonder what Social Services will make of that…Fabrizio Fillippo and Adam Till are the twisted minds behind the script, and Stan Brooks will call the shots starting later this month.Breslin will next be seen in music drama Janie Jones, which finds her as the daughter of a former groupie going to confront the rock star she believes is her father. She’s also part of the sprawling New Year’s Eve cast...

Breslin Picked as a Bathtub Girl in 'The Class Project'
Currently in that star child actress moving onto more adult roles phase of her career, Abigail Breslin is moving closer to the direction of acting peers such as the Fannings by taking on some tougher, less flattering indie drama roles. After signing up for Hilary Brougher's Innocence, the actress will now topline The Class Project, playing one of two teen sisters turned murders. To be directed by Stan Brooks (we've got no clue who this director is), lensing begins this month. Producers include Michael Rotenberg, Damian Ganczewski and Juliette Hagopian. Gist: Scripted by Fabrizio Filippo and Adam Till, this is based on Bob Mitchell's "The Class Project How to Kill a Mother: The True Story of Canada's Infamous Bathtub Girls," which follows two sisters who, tired of their mother's alcoholism and her abusive boyfriends, take matters into their own hands and plot to kill her. Worth Noting: From...

Julianne Moore Joins Jeff Bridges in The Seventh Son
Julianne Moore has joined Jeff Bridges in Sergey Bodrov's The Seventh Son. The film is an adaptation of the young adult novel The Last Apprentice and follows a young exorcist-in-training who can see and hear ghosts and smell death. Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Moore will play Mother Malkin, "the most sinister of witches who uses blood magic." As we previously reported, Bridges will play Exorcist Master Gregory, aka "The Spook". Alex Pettyfer and Jennifer Lawrence were both offered roles in The Seventh Son, but they have reportedly passed on the flick. While Moore was overlooked in the awards race for her great performance in The Kids Are All Right, she's still been picking up a slew of new roles. In the past two months, she's signed on to the vampire thriller Innocence, Paul Weitz' adaptation of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, and she'll play Sarah Palin...

Things go well as he uses luck, gumption, and improvisational skills to fake his way through the job, but when someone steals the town’s water supply, Rango is forced to become a real hero. As part of our weeklong coverage of the film we have a one on one interview with Abigail Breslin, one of Hollywood’s most talented child actors. During our interview, we talked about her friend’s reactions to her co-starring with Depp, the film’s use of “emo-tion capture,” some of her favorite films,...

Firth and Kidman in 'Stoker,' Magnolia Catches 'Melancholia' and Burton's 'Shadows' Fill Out
The L.A. Times reports Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman are circling Fox Searchlight's Stoker, a family mystery-drama that will mark the English-language debut of Oldboy director Chan-wook Park. The film centers on a girl (the previously attached Mia Wasikowska of The Kids Are All Right) and her mother (Kidman) who are visited by a mysterious uncle (Firth) after the girl's father dies. "Prison Break" actor Wentworth Miller penned the script, but otherwise this is a promising project if there ever was one. I just fear that Wasikowska, as much as I like her, is risking over-exposure with all the big roles she has lined up. She'll next be seen starring in Jane Eyre.

Variety brings the news that Abigail Breslin has joined Julianne Moore in the cast of director Hilary Brougher's gothic vampire film Innocence. Breslin will play a student at an elitist private school, where a number of the students are vampires.
