Barry Sonnenfeld's "The Addams Family" turns 30 this year, and it's hard to imagine the irreverently macabre movie starring Raul Julia, Angelica Houston, and Christopher Lloyd as anything other than a hit.
But when it was in production, the movie was anything but a sure hit, and the success of "The Addams Family" is even more impressive when one realizes the challenges Sonnenfeld faced when the movie was filming. Halfway through shooting, the movie moved from the first director-friendly Orion Pictures to Paramount and then had to deal with a leadership change at the movie's new studio. “The Addams Family,” the big-screen adaptation of Charles Addams’ comic stories of an aristocratic family with a taste for the macabre, became a box office sensation when it opened in theaters in 1991. The film, which had built-in interest thanks to the popularity of the 1960s television show that was also spawned by Addams’ cartoons, defied the odds to become one of the year’s biggest commercial hits.
A lot of things could have gone wrong or proved fatal before it got to that point. Orion, the studio that had greenlighted the picture and entrusted first-time filmmaker Barry Sonnenfeld to strike the right darkly silly tone, went bankrupt, and Paramount, which bought the project from the failing studio, had its own internal power shift. Plus, the track record of turning TV properties into watchable films is spotty at best. For every “The Fugitive” or “Mission: Impossible,” there are scores of duds like “Baywatch,...

It looks like Halloween is coming early this year. All week long, Gold Derby users have been making their predictions for what film will win the U.S. box office for the weekend of October 15-17, and “Halloween Kills” (dir. David Gordon Green) is the odds-on front-runner. Universal’s slasher flick is the direct sequel to “Halloween” (2018) and the 12th movie overall in the decades-long “Halloween” franchise. Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle are back once again as victim Laurie Strode and killer Michael Myers, with new cast members Anthony Michael Hall and Thomas Mann joining the spooky fun.

“Free Guy” (Disney/$19.99) continued to dominate VOD charts over the weekend. Shawn Levy’s action comedy with Ryan Reynolds repeated as #1 for a second week at iTunes and Google Play (ranked by transactions) and Vudu (which calculates by revenue). Meantime, the highest grossing non-franchise domestic release in theaters since “1917” almost two years ago held the #6 position in theaters this weekend, despite its home availability and losing 1,050 theaters. Once again, both hands are washing each other to mutual benefit.
A mere 14 titles charted across all three charts, which, continuing a recent trend, saw a broad consistency irrespective of the method of calculating results. Only three new films broke into any of the top 10 listings, but two placed second on one chart each. Their routes were very different, though.
M. Night Shyamalan’s “Old” has been the only Universal release in over a year to not have a Premium VOD release three weeks after hitting theaters.

With the world still in the midst of a global pandemic, it’s fair to say that this Halloween is going to probably look a little different. Indeed, with social distancing and tighter local restrictions in place, it’s likely that most people will be enjoying the creepiest season of the year from the comfort and safety of their own home, away from the bustling crowds.
Fear not, however! Tradition dictates that a good ol’ horror flick is all you need to help get you into that spooky spirit. And we’ve discovered a handful of spine-chilling movies that you can stream on Netflix right now to keep you entertained while staying indoors this October. I mean, sharing is caring, right?
So, without further ado, let’s dive in…
The Addams Family
It’s always handy having a family-friendly horror offering up your blood-soaked sleeve, and Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1991 classic black comedy is no different.

Hollywood studio executive William Bernstein, a co-founder of Orion Pictures who also worked for United Artists and Paramount Pictures, died Wednesday. He was 87.
Longtime associate Mike Medavoy confirmed Bernstein’s death, first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. “He was a brilliant guy, just very very smart,” Medavoy said.
Bernstein, Medavoy, Arthur Krim, Robert Benjamin and Eric Pleskow departed United Artists and launched Orion in 1978 as a mini-major that was the first significant new player in Hollywood in many decades. Medavoy credited Bernstein with conceiving the name of the studio. Bernstein explained the choice in a 1992 interview with the New York Times
“Orion is the largest constellation; it has five stars, just like us, and it was the brightest constellation in February, when we were forming the company,” he told the newspaper. “Besides, it was simple to spell.”
Between 1984 and 1991, Orion released four films that won the Academy Award for best picture: “Amadeus,...

The Addams Family 2 is officially set to bring its wholesomely horrifying brand of animated dread back to the big screen for the 2021 Halloween season.
The sequel, arriving via MGM’s United Artists banner, follows up the 2019 sleeper animated iteration of the often-adapted iconic 1960s spooky snap-happy sitcom, which went on to gross $203 million worldwide against a $24 million budget. Indeed, The Addams Family 2 was reportedly in the works less than a week after the first film’s October 11, 2019 bow, and signaled an October release date of its own for 2021. While the woeful year of 2020 obviously changed the trajectory of the entire entertainment industry, it appears that, in true Addams fashion, the rules didn’t apply to this sequel, which now remains on its original pre-pandemic course for Halloween 2021. Check out the teaser trailer announcing the sequel just below.

The View Conference is offering free streaming access to its 2020 program, which runs from Oct. 18-23 in Turin, Italy.
“There has been so much bad news in 2020, so I’m thrilled to be able to share some great news for a change,” said conference director Maria Elena Gutierrez. “Everyone could use some extra light and joy in their lives, so we have made the unprecedented decision to make this year’s conference completely free.” Those who register will have streaming access to the conference’s 125 online and on-site talks, workshops, master classes and panels.
“Every session will be available online, allowing anyone to attend anywhere in the world,” said Gutierrez. “This is a fantastic chance to grow the View community and to welcome into our family participants who are unable to travel to Torino or buy a full access pass.”

Pop culture's creepiest and kookiest family will return next year, as a new poster for The Addams Family 2 teases its planned Halloween 2021 release date. A second, nearly identical poster only says 'Coming Soon'. Contrasted against a bright yellow background, both posters features a gloom Wednesday looking very apathetic about her upcoming return to the big screen. "A sequel. How original," the poster also reads, channeling Wednesday perfectly. The poster also says, "Halloween 2021" at the bottom, coinciding with the planned release date previously reported on last year.
Directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, last year's animated reboot of The Addams Family was met with a mixed reception. Because the original live-action movies have become so iconic, it's difficult for many longtime fans to embrace a new take on the classic characters. She is also currently in production on the sci-fi thriller feature “Mother/Android” and is set to star in the live-action film adaptation of the cartoon “Tom and Jerry.” Her other recent film credits include “Greta,” “Suspiria,” and the animated version of “The Addams Family.

Free Guy, a comedy that centers itself in a socially-distant video game virtual landscape, ironically finds itself as one of the most prominent stragglers in the dwindling group of major movies still on schedule for a theatrical release in 2020. Indeed, the December-scheduled film continues to tout its plans to hit theaters with the release of a new trailer.
Shawn Levy directed the film off a script by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn. Ryan Reynolds stars as the eponymous Guy, a suddenly self-aware Npc (non-playable character) in a fictional open world video game who, upon forming a romantic connection with a player (Jodie Comer), starts living his best (virtual) life, eventually faced with having to save his world.
On that note, check out the new Free Guy trailer just below.

For the first time in a while, Netflix is adding no new titles today, so let’s instead take the opportunity to recap what’s gone up on the streaming site over the past week, from Saturday, August 1st to Saturday, August 8th. As that encompasses the first day of the month, there was a huge amount of fresh content added to Netflix’s library over this period. To be exact, there were 49 movies and 24 TV shows.
On the film side of things, this haul includes many an acclaimed or cult favorite flick from across the decades in all kinds of genres. The highlight is probably the entire Jurassic Park trilogy, which has proved popular with Netflix users as the first two entries have been hanging around the top 10 most-watched movies list almost ever since arriving. 80s classic fantasy flick The NeverEnding Story and its sequel were added on the 1st as well,...

With the summer starting to wind down, Netflix appear to be taking their foot off the gas a little bit when it comes to releasing high-profile original movies. Over the last few months, the streaming service has debuted a string of in-house projects that have either been subjected to widespread critical acclaim or racked up huge viewing numbers, and frequently both.
Netflix can sometimes be fairly secretive about their viewership data unless they’re shouting their success from the rooftops, and having recently revealed their Top 10 most-watched original movies ever, you can understand why they went public. If you include the reported 72 million streams for Charlize Theron’s The Old Guard that would see it claim sixth spot in the rankings, then four of the Top 10 were released between March and July of this year alone.

As good of a month as July was for Netflix subscribers, the streaming giant looks to deliver an almost as impressive August and they kicked things off yesterday with a huge drop that comprised old classics, forgotten films, underrated gems and more. And while not super heavy for horror, in particular, there were still a few notable titles that arrived on the platform yesterday that are sure to get your blood pumping and make your palms sweaty.
For instance, the original Jurassic Park trilogy – that’s Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III – is now on Netflix and while perhaps not the scariest films out there, they still do have their moments of horror and hold up very well even today. The first one, of course, is a bonafide classic, but its two sequels are certainly worth a watch as well.

Though Netflix has dropped a few notable titles from its library to say goodbye to July, today has brought us a whole heap of fresh content to usher in the new month. With over 30 new movies and TV shows, August has been welcomed with a truckload of classic films, mostly from the 90s and the early 00s, as well as some other interesting titles that you may want to check out.
The most attention-grabbing additions are all three Jurassic Park movies, which are hopping over to Netflix after a short stint on Peacock. So, you may want to travel back to Isla Nubar yet again this weekend and treat yourself to a rewatch of the prehistoric trilogy. Elsewhere, there are the two sequels to Ocean’s Eleven and medieval adventure A Knight’s Tale starring the much-missed Heath Ledger.

Netflix‘s new releases for August 2020 should be a hell of a good time.
How else are we supposed to describe the month that features the long-awaited arrival of Lucifer season 5? Yes, ol’ Lucy finally returns on August 21 for what is now the penultimate season of the show.
While Lucifer is the main highlight of Netflix’s original offerings on August, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some other intriguing options to stream. The Rain season 3 arrives on August 6, Wizards: Tales of Arcadia on August 7, and Teenage Bounty Hunters on August 14. That’s not even to mention a potential blockbuster movie in the form of the Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt starring Project Power.
In August, Netflix also continues its high-profile poaching of other worthwhile properties as well. August sees the arrival of both The Legend of Korra and Cobra Kai, opening up two worthwhile series to an even wider streaming audience.

It’s hard to believe it, but “Clueless,” the seminal comedy that perfectly captured teenage life, has just turned 25, making it several years removed from high school graduation.
In the subsequent two and a half decades, “Clueless” has achieved near classic status, but writer and director Amy Heckerling still remembers the many times producers and executives passed on the story of a girl named Cher. With Warner Bros. vacating its August 12 worldwide release date for “Tenet,” we’re still many weeks away from any approximation of normal business. Meanwhile, the VOD world continues apace with Rod Lurie’s Afghanistan war-set “The Outpost” leading the way. Now in its third week, the Screen Media title remains at #1 at Apple and Spectrum.
Perhaps even more impressive: “Outpost” is #2 at FandangoNow, which ranks by revenue — and Lurie’s film has a non-premium price of $6.99. Even outside a theater, some of its truisms remain — never underestimate the appeal of a military-themed film. Fans of 80s fantasy and practical special effects should take note of Man & Witch. The new movie is currently in the works and appears to be dripping with 80s nostalgia. First and foremost, it stars Tami Stronach, who is known best as the Childlike Empress from The NeverEnding Story. She will appear alongside several other stars from 80s classics, with the added bonus of featuring puppets crafted by The Jim Henson Creature Shop.
According to a new report, Man & Witch was written by Greg Steinbruner, Tami Stronach's husband. Rob Margolies (She Wants Me) is set to direct. The movie is described as "heartwarming homage to the lo-fi fantasy films of the '80s" and a "comic adventure that both fulfills and subverts the expectations of what a fantasy universe can be." Stronach, it's said, will star as a reclusive and powerful witch. The mysterious figure loses her heart...

Exclusive: Lucifer star Aimee Garcia has signed to executive produce and star in Match Me If You Can, a romantic comedy about the world of dating in today’s geek culture. Marian Yeager is directing the pic from a script by Betsy Morris.
Garcia, who is set to reprise her role as Ella Lopez in the sixth and final season of Netflix’s Lucifer, will play Kip Parsons, a talented computer nerd who is rejected by an online dating service as “unmatchable.” After her online blog about her humiliating status goes viral, Kip quickly becomes the reluctant spokesperson for all the frustrated singles out there. There’s just one problem: the dating service swears they didn’t reject her and she becomes the target of a kangaroo court.
Yeager and Monica Lund are producing the project via My Productions (The Conway Curve), with Garcia and Stacey Parks serving as executive producers.

The Munsters is an American sitcom that ran for two seasons and for 70 episodes from 1964 to 1965. In 2004, a short-lived two-episode revival was made but failed to resonate the way the original did. Serving as a companion piece to The Addams Family, The Munsters revolves around a family of harmless monsters trying to navigate ordinary life in America. The half-hour satire pokes fun about both monster movie conventions and the family TV drama popular at the time.

Gold Derby: You have become known for great comedic performances from “The Producers” to “The Birdcage” and you certainly haven’t stopped doing comedy.
