This tribute was posted to the Roots’ social media pages:

Hub had been battling multiple myeloma– a type of blood cancer — since 2007. He did his last show with band in August 2007.
In the intervening years, he had undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy, according to his wife Stephanie. She told Philadelphia’s 6Abc that the musician had been feeling energetic of late, but last night his condition deteriorated rapidly.

WaterTower Music is excited to announce the March 18 release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), which features a completely brand-new score to accompany Snyder’s vision for the film, created by Grammy nominated multi-platinum producer, musician, composer and educator Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie Xl.
The album features Holkenborg’s music from Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the film in which, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.

Before the late-night show and the household fame, the Roots were the pride of Philadelphia’s underground hip-hop scene. The quiet heart of that version of the Roots — an unforgettable part of the lineup that put them on the map, won countless devoted fans, and enabled all the success to come — was Malik B, who died this week at age 47.
Malik wasn’t the flashiest verbal technician in the Roots; that was always Tariq Trotter, a.k.a. Black Thought, a boundless lyrical dynamo whose freestyle abilities were legendary from Day One.

Things Fall Apart: Lee’s New Joint Unearths a Heart of Darkness Alive and Well
“There is no story that is not true,” wrote Chinua Achebe in his classic 1958 novel Things Fall Apart, a seminal Nigerian text which deals with the southeastern part of the country’s introduction to the first round of Europeans in the late 19th century, and, of course, colonialism. Conversely, the suggestion is, every story is true, even if those who tell them wouldn’t necessarily agree—to exist is a certain truth. But whether perspective is the true scribe or just the inchoate cohort of every narrative’s origin, the intentions are as suspect as any narrator is subjective.…...

Since its release in 2003, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s “In Da Club” has gone on to rival “Happy Birthday to You” as the most popular song to celebrate another lap around the sun. While speaking to People about his new film, heist-thriller Den of Thieves co-starring Gerard Butler and Pablo Schreiber, the multi-talented artist and entrepreneur reflected on the 15th anniversary of his career-launching smash.
“Simplicity is a big key to hit music,” Jackson says of its staying power. “Don’t overthink things, just organically see what you feel when the production comes in. Like, ‘Go shorty, it’s your birthday.

Ever since Robert De Niro’s shocking 60-pound weight gain for “Raging Bull,” radical body transformations without a heavy hand from prosthetics have been Oscar gold.
Hillary Swank won her first Oscar after dramatically shedding pounds and hair in “Boys Don’t Cry”; she won again when she bulked up for “Million Dollar Baby.” Tom Hanks also found success with the diet game, first for “Philadelphia” and again for “Castaway.” But, like Hanks, Charlize Theron proved it’s not always just about weight but about total appearance transformation in “Monster.” Call it the Academy’s respect for method acting.
Now, Anne Hathaway may have the lock for the Feb. 24 Academy Awards in the supporting actress category for her part in “Les Misérables,” for which she lost 25 pounds and looks emaciated.

When an actor completely immerses themselves into a role, the result is usually stunning. Sometimes though, what’s more impressive is the work that went in before filming even began. Changing appearance for roles has become quite common in movies today, but occasionally, an actor’s physical transformation goes far beyond a bit of make-up or a haircut, like Christian Bale in, well, most of his films.
In The Dark Knight Rises, out in theatres this week, actor Tom Hardy bulked up significantly to play the menacing terrorist Bane, a new villain intent on taking down Gotham City. The actor has had to bulk up for roles before (Warrior, Bronson) and in honour of his dedication, we look back at ten actors who have undergone remarkable physical transformations for their roles.
To start, let’s look at the aforementioned Mr. Hardy.

50 Cent is a financial titan. The rapper has expanded his brand into sneakers, books, body spray, condoms, vitamin water, energy drinks and, of course, film production via his Cheetah Vision production company. And that's what we're here to talk about. You see, while 50 Cent likes to make money -- lots of it -- that doesn't necessarily mean he cares about the quality of product he puts out there. And so, it's hardly a shock that his steps into the film production world have resulted in movies that pretty much go straight-to-dvd. We're talking about his cancer drama "All Things Fall Apart" or the thriller "Setup" with Bruce Willis and Ryan Phillippe. And now his latest attempt at moviemaking, "Freelancers," seems headed for the same fate, and this time it will bring down two Academy Award winners with it.

The new cancer drama All Things Fall Apart provoked widespread, richly merited mockery when photos of 50 Cent, looking skeletal and Oscar-hungry, circulated online amid reports that the rapper-turned-actor had lost more than 50 pounds to play a cancer-stricken college football player. The dramatic weight loss earned headlines, but the fact that the 36-year-old actor—who thoroughly looks his age—felt he could convincingly play an athlete in his early 20s says even more about the self-delusion and narcissism behind this unintentionally hilarious vanity project. In the role he was born not to play, the G-Unit head honcho—who also ...

Happy Valentine's Day! Sadly, there aren't too many romantic movies hitting DVD or Blu-ray today, but I suppose anything with Johnny Depp always makes for a perfect date flick... even if he happens to be playing an alcoholic. The Rum Diary is really the only major release of the week, with most of the other selections being indie and foreign films including Take Shelter starring Michael Shannon, Jose Padilha's Elite Squad: The Enemy Within and The Human Centipede II: Full Sequence. Criterion is also putting out Lena Dunham's Tiny Furniture and Hideo Gosha's Three Outlaw Samurai, and then there are a couple of acclaimed documentaries in The Interrupters and Urbanized. We'd also be remiss if we did not mention 50 Cent's cancer drama All Things Fall Apart... did someone say Oscar snub? What will you be buying or renting this week? Check out the list of new releases after the jump.

DVD or Blu-ray? Redbox or Netflix? Streaming? Whatever your poison, we've got the highlights and lowlights on the week's new releases. Moviefone's Pick of the Week "The Interrupters" What's It About? "Hoop Dreams" director Steve James tackles the crisis of inner-city violence and the people who are trying restore peace and unity; following the CeaseFire activist organization for over a year as they try to quash Chicago's outbreak of gang-related crimes, "Interrupters" documents several cases of possible redemption -- with various results. See It Because: Steve James films some incredibly real moments of hope and despair, and while the film feels epic in scope, it hits hardest when you realize that these events are just another day for everyone involved. Also New on DVD & Blu-ray "The Rum Diary" Johnny Depp adapts another Hunter S. Thompson novel, but without any of the flair of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." See...

Three Outlaw Samurai (Criterion Collection) I just watched this last night and enjoyed it quite a bit, but for anyone that reads this site often you will frequently see me complimenting samurai features. This one is a bit of a Criterion rarity in that it is feature free outside of the trailer and one essay, but the pricing does reflect that fact as Amazon has the Blu-ray listed at $19.99.
Prior to seeing this film I had never seen anything from director Hideo Gosha, but the storytelling here makes me want to see more. Three Outlaw Samurai follows the story of a wandering ronin who happens upon a situation where a trio of peasants have kidnapped the daughter of a tyrannical magistrate in an attempt to have their demands heard and to stop the oppression that has befallen eight local villages. The situation escalates when the magistrate fights back and two other samurai,...

Mario Van Peebles said he was drawn to the film “All Things Fall Apart” due to “curiosity.” “I’m interested to see what the universe brings,” he said. He was highly interested to see what kind of energy Curtis Jackson, better known to the rest of us as “50 Cent,” would bring to the leading role of Deon, a collegiate football player who develops cancer and has to face his mortality. “I was interested to see how he [Jackson] would get there [in character] as an actor,” he said. Once Van Peebles took the reins of director as well as the role of “Eric,” he learned just how much acting talent...

[1] Over a year and a half ago, the world got its first glimpse at a shockingly emaciated [2] Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, who'd dropped nearly 60 pounds to play the lead role in a project called All Things Fall Apart. (Originally called just Things Fall Apart.) When the finished feature finally comes to DVD and Blu-ray next month, we'll finally get to see what all the trouble was for. Directed by Mario Van Peebles from a screenplay by Jackson and Brian A. Miller, the drama stars Jackson as a college football player who's on the verge of joining the NFL when he's sticken with cancer. We got an early peek at the film in the form of a sales trailer [3] that hit around its little-noticed Miami Film Festival premiere last spring, but now that Image Entertainment is on board we finally have an official trailer as well. Take a look after the jump.

The photos have circulated around the internet for nearly two years now, and the payoff is nearly here.
50 Cent got super skinny for his role in the upcoming film "All Things Fall Apart," in which he plays a star running back on the verge of the NFL draft who suddenly is diagnosed with cancer. He went on a liquid diet and got down to 160 pounds, which is especially striking given his broad, muscular physique seen earlier in the trailer.
It's a serious turn for the rapper, who has been on a filmmaking rampage of late. In 2011, he starred in "Setup" with Bruce Willis, while this coming year, in addition to "All Things," he'll feature in "Vengeance"; "Freelancers," with Robert De Niro and Forest Whitaker; "Fire With Fire," with Josh Duhamel, Rosario Dawson and Willis; "Frozen Ground" with John Cusack and Vanessa Hudgens; and "Lives of the Saints," with Kat Dennings and Meg Ryan.

If you’re going to gain or lose a ridiculous amount of weight as an actor, make sure someone is gonna give you an Oscar, or a Golden Globe, or at the very least a People’s Choice Award for all your trouble. Remember when Jared Leto gained 5,000 pounds to play John Lennon murderer Mark David Chapman in “Chapter 27“? No? That’s because nobody saw the movie, and it’s just sad to pull a De Niro if you...

Well folks, the time has finally come. Nearly two years ago we heard about Curtis .50 Cent. Jackson taking on the role of a high school football player ailing from cancer, and today we finally get to see what the now 36-year-old rapper-turned-actor looks like playing someone half his age. All Things Fall Apart centers around Jackson.s Deon, who is on track to make the transition from high school straight into the NFL. But Deon is sidetracked by a form of spinal cancer that takes him down a completely different path, a strange path where Ray Liotta plays a doctor and not a mobster or corrupt cop who may chop your fingers off at any moment. Check out the many shapes and sizes of 50 Cent in the trailer below, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies. I.ve got to give Jackson credit. While strapping dreadlocks to him does nothing to make him...

Good titles are hard to come by. Artist 50 Cent thought he had one all set to go for the film he.s making, however he was forced to change the name when he learned that the title chosen was previously claimed by an African author who doesn.t want to give it up. According to the Guardian, Curtis Jackson a.k.a. 50 Cent spent much of last year filming a movie about a football player with cancer, which he intended to tile Things Fall Apart. It.s a great title, to be sure, so it shouldn.t come as a surprise that someone else had previously used it for their own work. Described as one of Africa.s greatest novelists, Chinua Achebe published a book in 1958 titled .Things Fall Apart.. Remember how rapper-filmmaker 50 Cent wrote, produced, and stars in a film about a football player who gets diagnosed with cancer? The Mario van Peebles-directed flick was set to launch Fiddy into dramatic stardom under the title Things Fall Apart until reps for Nigerian author Chinua Achebe -- who wrote a little book also called Things Fall Apart, practically the most famous African novel ever -- contacted him with a copyright infringement complaint. 50 offered $1 million for use of the title, prompting Achebe's camp to shoot back with a resounding rejection.

50 Cent's new movie has been forced to back down in a legal battle with representatives of the 80-year-old Nigerian novelist, Chinua Achebe.
The rapper, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, had called his movie Things Fall Apart - the same title as Achebe's most famous novel, which was included on the list of Time magazine's All Time Top 100 Novels. Chinua Achebe continues to write, and is currently professor of Africana Studies at Brown University in Rhode Island.
The movie's producers allegedly offered $1m for the rights to the title. Though Achebe himself has been silent on the issue, Naijan, a Nigerian news website, reports that a spokesman for Achebe's Foundation, which manages his works, informed producers that "the novel with the said title was initially produced in 1958 (that is 17 years before rapper 50 Cent was born), listed as the mostly read book in modern African literature, and won’t be sold for even $1bn.

Things fall apart for rapper as Nigerian writer makes him change forthcoming film title to avoid conflict with 1958 novel
50 Cent has been undone by one of Africa's greatest novelists, Chinua Achebe. The rapper's latest movie has been renamed ahead of its release, due to a conflict with Achebe's most famous work.
Things Fall Apart, published by Achebe in 1958, is Nigeria's most famous English-language novel. It has sold more than 8m copies worldwide. Unfortunately, 50 Cent was not aware of this. He spent much of 2010 shooting a film of the same name, the story of an American football player diagnosed with cancer. "It's a project that I wrote, produced and financed myself," he explained last year. Directed by Mario Van Peebles, it premiered at the Miami film festival in March and is expected to be released soon.
