Liam Neeson Asked Steven Spielberg To Fire Him From A Movie After A Table Read
Image
Steven Spielberg and Liam Neeson worked together on the 1993 classic "Schindler's List" (seen above). The film tells the story of Oskar Schindler, a German industrialist who hopes to keep his factories open even as the Nazi party comes to power in Germany. He pays off Nazi officials to employ Jewish workers, effectively shielding them from the Nazi death camps. It takes him some time to realize that he's doing something heroic. He soon begins over-employing his factories, pointedly saving as many Jewish people as possible. At the end of the war, he is said to have saved about 1,200 people.

Neeson's performance was sensitive and tragic, and it earned the actor his only Oscar nomination to date. It seemed logical that Neeson and Spielberg should want to work together again at some point, but it took many years for the appropriate project to manifest. In 2005, it was reported by Variety that the project had been found.

10 Years Ago, Josh Trank's Fantastic Four Became Marvel's Most Impactful Box Office Flop
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"I have never seen a confluence of events impact the opening of a movie so swiftly." Those are the words of Chris Aronson speaking to The New York Times in 2015. He was serving as Fox's president of domestic distribution and the movie he was referring to was director Josh Trank's ill-fated, much-maligned "Fantastic Four." It exists as a textbook example of the phrase "box office bomb." It was nothing shy of a disaster.

At the time, Fox was still in control of both the "X-Men" and "Fantastic Four" franchises as we were still a couple of years away from Disney swooping in to buy 21st Century Fox in a landmark $71.3 billion deal. The studio had made a reasonably successful "Fantastic Four" movie in 2005, with a panned,...

Danya Taymor could make Tony Awards history with a win for ‘John Proctor Is the Villain’
Image
At last year’s Tony Awards, Danya Taymor took Broadway’s biggest night by surprise with her victory for directing Best Musical winner The Outsiders. Only 18 Gold Derby users were predicting her to prevail, favoring instead Maria Friedman for Best Musical Revival winner Merrily We Roll Along and Michael Greif, a theater veteran looking for his first-ever Tony for musical Hell’s Kitchen.

Now on her second Tony nomination in as many years, Taymor looks to pull off another unexpected victory, this time for new play John Proctor Is the Villain. Even though Oh, Mary! helmer Sam Pinkleton is out front in Gold Derby’s odds, our users are not underestimating Taymor again, as she ranks second in the category with a contingent of backers. If she wins again this year, she would make Tony Awards history.

62 Years Later, Walt Disney's Forgotten Adventure Film Remains 1 of the Best WWII Movies Ever
Image
The Disney+ streaming service has acted as a stunning resource to revisit some of the forgotten classics of the company's past. Disney's live-action era, in its earlier days, is so often overlooked because the animation division far outperformed those real-world narratives. That period also saw so much growth for the company as it curated its identity and tone. That Walt Disney magic was really cemented in some of those older live-action pictures, with the company defining itself as one of the most innovative, forward-thinking and creative studios in Hollywood. Titles from the 1960s, like Swiss Family Robinson and Mary Poppins, still feed into Disney's identity today. But there was another movie that has not gained the same attention, despite its industry influence.

In 1963, The Walt Disney Company released Miracle of the White Stallions. The picture was overseen by Walt Disney Productions and distributed by Buena Vista Distribution. Running at exactly...

The 19th annual event is scheduled for Feb. 27, three days before the Academy Awards, at the historic Ebell theater in Los Angeles. Actors John C. Reilly and Éanna Hardwicke will be saluted as well.

Also new to the lineup is Will Ferrell, who will introduce Reilly and hand him his trophy. The pair, of course, have co-starred in such films as Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006), Step Brothers (2008) and Holmes & Watson (2018).

Created by the US-Ireland Alliance, the Oscar Wilde Awards celebrate the work of those from Ireland — and some who are not — who contribute to film, television and music. (Kennedy, with eight Oscar noms, and Marshall, with five, are Californians born in Berkeley and Glendale, respectively.

The Steven Spielberg War Movie That Drew Inspiration From a John Wayne and John Ford Classic
Image
Although Steven Spielberg is often celebrated as the most significant filmmaker of his time, a previous generation would have given that some honor to the great John Ford. Ford has dozens of classic films on his resume, and Spielberg has certainly not been shy about citing him as a major inspiration; a young Spielberg was mentored by Ford when he first entered the industry, which he recreated directly during the final scenes of his semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans. Spielberg is known for making tremendous leaps forward with the special effects in his films, but Ford was also quite revolutionary in terms of his approach to visual storytelling. Spielberg cited the classic romantic drama The Quiet Man as a major inspiration for his World War I epic War Horse.

Steven Spielberg movies: All 33 feature films ranked worst to best
Image
The career of director Steven Spielberg has practically defined modern blockbusters, but he’s also been able to craft more personal films as well. Let’s rank Spielberg’s entire filmography from worst to best in a new photo gallery of his 33 theatrical features.

Spielberg’s reputation as a master entertainer came with the release of “Jaws,” his 1975 shark attack thriller. Made when he was just 29 years old, the film set box office records and made the summer safe for blockbusters again. Such following films as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977), “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981) and “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982) cemented Spielberg’s ability to create spectacular amusements that brought audiences to their feet.

He later moved into serious filmmaking with “The Color Purple” (1985), which paved the way for his 1993 Holocaust drama “Schindler’s List” (1993). That film swept the Academy Awards, bringing Spielberg Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture.

The Harry Potter series is quickly moving forward. With a confirmed filming start for the summer of 2025, the series has just received a magical update.

There were many things that made Harry Potter a success and one of the strongest points was its magically handpicked cast, but they are not the only thing the upcoming HBO reboot needs. Aside from providing a more faithful adaptation of the seven J.K. Rowling novels and improving the outdated visual effects, the location and costumes are also key factors. Per Deadline, the Harry Potter series checked another box by hiring an Academy Award-winning costume designer.

Harry Potter TV series adds Poor Things’ Oscar-winning Holly Waddington as the costume designer
Image
The Harry Potter HBO series continues to shape up. The latest big-budget Harry Potter project has thousands of young actors looking to land the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. 32,000, to be exact. The series’ production says it’s adhering to the “canonical” ages of specific characters. Still, others are likely to change, including the Dursleys, who will be younger in the show. Gardiner says the cast will experience a “bigger sandpit to play in” when her Harry Potter TV series begins.

Now, according to Deadline, the new adaptation has added the Academy Award-winning costume designer of Emma Stone’s Poor Things, Holly Waddington. Her work from that film would also earn her wins from the BAFTA and the Costume Designers Guild Awards. Prior to Poor Things, Waddington credits included the well-received Florence Pugh starrer Lady Macbeth back in 2016, for which she won a BIFA. Additionally, her credits as assistant...

Niels Arestrup, ‘A Prophet’ and ‘War Horse’ Actor, Dies at 75
Image
Niels Arestrup, the French-Danish actor and muse to Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard who appeared in international features including Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and Julian Schnabel’s The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, has died. He was 75.

Arestrup’s wife, Isabelle Le Nouvel, confirmed his death to Agence France-Presse on Sunday, saying he died “at the end of a courageous fight against illness.”

Arestrup will forever be linked to Audiard and his performances in the filmmaker’s The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005) — playing the criminal father to Romain Duris’ would-be concert pianist — and A Prophet (2009), in which he embodies a terrifying Corsican mob boss who runs his operation from within prison.

Arestrup won best supporting acting César awards, France’s equivalent of the Oscar, for both roles, and the performances solidified his image as an onscreen villain with a piercing blue gaze who is barely holding back the violence within.

2018 Flop Action Movie The Hurricane Heist is Streaming Free on Tubi
Image
Fans of action heist movies have been discovering an easily forgotten 2018 box office dud on Tubi: The Hurricane Heist. The combined disaster movie and action crime thriller has blown away the competition to take the top spot on the free streaming platform, but those choosing to check out the movie shouldnt expect too much from the box office and critical bomb.

Streaming has allowed many movies to discover a new audience years after their initial release, even those that would usually have dropped out of existence thanks to their dismal performance in cinemas, or terrible reviews. Viewers looking for something to pass the time at home dont seem to really care about such things when a movie is in front of them to watch for free, and that is probably why The Hurricane Heist has found renewed success despite Rotten Tomatoes audiences scoring it a lowly 28%.

The Hurricane Heist is directed by Rob Cohen,...

Why Tom Hiddlestons Netflix Political Thriller Is Still Stuck in Limbo
Image
Tom Hiddleston is one of the most famous names in Hollywood right now. Best known for his role as Loki, he's arguably the biggest star from the Marvel Cinematic Universe who doesn't play a superhero. Hiddleston currently headlines the Disney+ series Loki, which is one of the best-received MCU projects since 2019's Endgame. He's also appeared in notable works such as Midnight in Paris, War Horse, Crimson Peak, and Kong: Skull Island.

Looking to switch things up, the actor struck a deal with Netflix to star in a new series called White Stork. But unfortunately for Hiddleston, the production has experienced numerous delays and seems to be stuck in limbo -- or possibly in developmental hell.

Tom Hiddleston Is Set to Play an Ambitious Politician

Described as a political thriller, White Stork follows an ambitious British politician named James Cooper, who's been selected to run for a seat in Parliament.

Steven Spielberg Knows Exactly What Went Wrong With 1941
Image
Everyone knows that Steven Spielberg's "1941" was a notorious box office flop. And everyone ... is wrong. Despite its reputation over the years, Spielberg's 1979 war comedy was not a box office failure. It just looked that way because, well, it was a Steven Spielberg movie. In '79, in the wake of the record-breaking box office juggernaut that was "Jaws" and its successful follow-up "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," Steven Spielberg seemed untouchable. It felt like the wunderkind director could not fail — that, like a cinematic King Midas, everything he touched would turn to gold.

"1941" changed that. While the film went on to become a modest box office success, taking in $94.9 million on a $35 million budget, it was not well received. Critics were mixed at best on the film. As Roger Ebert wrote, "The movie finally reduces itself to an assault on our eyes and ears, a nonstop series of climaxes,...
