Cocktail is not high on surprises. The two main characters are prematurely jaded, bored out of their wits by an excess of hedonism. Into their lives arrives the timid golden hearted jilted bride who needs a home and a place to call her own.

The film is really about three unmoored characters finding their bearings. That it has been shot in London is a happy circumstance for the characters. Cinematographer Anil Mehta makes them look ravishing in their rain-washed lives with glimmers of sunshine peeping out in tantalizing scoops.

Unfortunately, Saif silhouetted against the London’s quaint bustle is a bit of a cliche. He brings nothing new to his role, and he isn’t entirely to be blamed for it. Saif’s is a thankless part.

France’s Canal+ Group has increased its stake in multi-territory Asian video streamer Viu to 36.8%. It says that the move is in accordance with the terms of the strategic partnership with Viu owner Pccw Group announced a year ago and follows the satisfaction of key business milestones.

The move is the second time that Canal+ has increased its share stake and means that Canal+ has released the last instalment of its $300 million staggered investment. “This investment is a renewed testimony to Canal+’s commitment to develop Asia as one of the group’s growth engines and underlines Canal+’s confidence in Viu and its team,” the French company said in a statement. A further investment, at Canal+’s discretion, could lift its ownership stake in Viu to 51%.

Mumbai, May 15 (Ians) ‘Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’ producer Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films, who’s best known for films such as ‘Being Cyrus’, ‘Love Aaj Kal’ and ‘Angrezi Medium’, had a befitting reply when a media person claimed that the film makes fun of the middle class.

Addressing the media after the trailer release, Dinesh Vijan said: “I am from a joint family, 25 people used to live together in one house. When I needed to move out of it, I had to wait for five years before I could venture out.

“I am a middle-class man myself, I came here from outside, I didn’t know anyone in this business, whether it was ‘Badlapur’ or ‘Hindi Medium’, ‘Luka Chuppi’ or ‘Mimi’, each one of my films chronicles middle-class tales. Maddock Films makes these films because we are middle class.”

Popular Bollywood actor Parineeti Chopra has two projects based on real-life stories in the works.

“Chamkila” is a biopic on Punjabi singer-songwriter pop star duo Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur, who shot to fame in the 1980s recording and performing songs that were social commentaries or devotionals, and which became massive hits. The duo was gunned down in Mehsampur village, Punjab, in 1988. Their assassination remains an unsolved mystery and was the subject of Kabir Singh Chowdhry’s 2018 mockumentary “Mehsampur.”

“Chamkila,” produced by Reliance Entertainment, is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, known for “Jab We Met” (2007), “Love Aaj Kal” (2009), “Rockstar” (2011) and “Highway” (2014). Pop star and actor Diljit Dosjanh (Netflix original film “Jogi”) plays Chamkila while Chopra plays Kaur.

“Diljit and I are going to be singing throughout the film. We’re doing like 12-15 songs because it’s a film on music. We’re doing live recordings on set.

Talking about working with Imtiaz Ali, Kartik said: "I am so excited, that I can't describe my state of mind. From the first meeting until now, the process of working with Imtiaz has been great.

Imtiaz Ali's films always revolves around love, the strongest human emotion. The director feels everything in the universe moves because of love.

"I don't know what the relevance of love is, but I feel everything in the universe somehow moves because of it. I feel that if a man and a woman are in love, it is through their love that the universe is moving around. I want to explore these things more," said Ali, at the trailer launch of his next film, "Love Aaj Kal" on Friday in Mumbai.
