Now that J Balvin has made his mark in Japanese animation, after starring in Crunchyroll’s hit anime series “Solo Leveling,” TheWrap thought it’d be a good idea to list all the Hollywood stars who’ve also lent their voices to the genre.
It already takes a lot of training and focus to be an actor, but one must unlock a new skill in the craft when it comes to voice acting, especially when it comes to anime. And now that anime has risen in popularity, more and more stars are carving out their lane in the industry as voice actors.
All the actors listed voiced roles for the English dub versions of these shows and films, many of which you’ll recognize right off the bat. Here are 17 celebrities who rocked the mic as anime characters.

Hollywood’s It girl, Sydney Sweeney, went all out for one of her most ambitious projects, alongside director Michael Mohan with Immaculate, a direct leap into the horror-thriller genre. Portraying Sister Cecelia, the movie had the actress take on a dark and eerie storyline with scenes involving her drenched in blood, against the backdrop of a picturesque Italian countryside. Soon after its release in theaters worldwide, the film quickly garnered views and praise, climbing up in box office revenue and acclaim.

In sharp contrast, its digital release brought about a stringent wave of criticisms aimed not at Sweeney but at the artistic choices made by Mohan. It turns out that those complaints only highlighted a plaguing issue associated with streaming services and had shockingly nothing to do with any of the creative executives involved in the film-making process. The American Society of Cinematographers has unveiled the nominations for its 38th annual ASC Awards, honoring the year’s best in feature film, documentary and television cinematography.
The society’s marquee Theatrical Feature Film nominees are chock-full of awards-season favorite pics, with one surprise. Edward Lachman is up for the Netflix pic El Conde, joining the likes of Matthew Libatique for Maestro, Rodrigo Prieto for Killers of the Flower Moon, Robbie Ryan for Poor Things, Hoyte van Hoytema for Oppenheimer.
Prieto also lensed the year’s No. 1 movie, Barbie, but missed the ASC cut today.
The group’s film winner has gone on to claim the Academy Award nearly half of the time — 17 times in its 37 years — but not last year. Mandy Walker won the ASC’s top film prize in 2023, but the Academy Award went to James Friend for All Quiet on the Western Front.

Throughout his career, Hong Kong director Lawrence Ah Mon has told numerous stories about the disenfranchised in Hk society. Considering most of his colleagues focused on genres such as thriller and action, his features stand out as they give the viewer an idea of the way issues such as the shift between generations, youth culture and the feelings of teenage angst and isolation are experienced in Hk culture. Perhaps one of the most noteworthy examples of his filmography is “Spacked Out” from 2000, a feature which was honored with as “Film of Merit” by the Hong Kong Film Critics in 2001 and has recently been restored so that audiences worldwide have the chance to experience this story one more time or maybe even for the first time.

When Monk premiered in 2002, the series was unique in many ways -- and the Peacock movie Mr. Monk's Last Case is able to capture almost all of them. But television has changed a lot since TV viewers met Adrian Monk, and where the movie falls flat is in trying to update the classic world of Monk for a 2020s audience. Mr. Monk's Last Case gives fans everything they've been waiting for, but in a much more self-conscious package.
It's no surprise that Peacock got around to making a Monk movie. Series creator Andy Breckman had tried to make one in 2012. The "Monk in Quarantine" short that premiered on Peacock Presents: The At-Home Variety Show Featuring Seth MacFarlane was universally well-received in 2020, and Peacock is home to two of the three Psych movies. But it's worth noting that Monk paved the way for shows like Psych; it was USA's first smash hit,...

Amy Sedaris is stepping back into the kitchen for a fun new HIllshire Farm sandwich campaign. The Emmy nominee is teaming up with the food company to celebrate the universal love of sandwiches with specially made recipes based on various celebrities, including herself.
Sedaris, well-known for her roles in the likes of BoJack Horseman, Strangers with Candy and The Mandalorian, is as celebrated outside of the realm of acting as she is within it, having run a cupcake and cheeseball business out of her home kitchen for years and naming it after a pet rabbit. The expansion of free streaming services continues unabated. On Wednesday, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (Csse) shared some details on its ever-expanding reach and upcoming original programming at the Iab Newfronts in New York. A month after launching a new advertising sales division known as Crackle Connex, Csse reports having an audience of over 80 million monthly active users, up 100% year-over-year.
This rapid expansion was aided by the company acquiring Redbox last May, giving Csse an out-of-home presence, but the majority of the growth comes from the addition of over 160 channels on the company’s free ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) and ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) services.

Drew and Jonathan Scott, the identical twins and popular hosts of HGTV’s Property Brothers, are debuting their new preschool series, Builder Brothers Dream Factory, on Treehouse in their native Canada on March 26.
Inspired by the Canadian reality TV stars, the animated series from Sinking Ship Entertainment and Scott Brothers Entertainment and distributed by Nelvana portrays the Scott brothers as a pair of regular kids using their imagination, creativity and heart to help friends and solve problems in the neighborhood.
The Scotts, who are based in Los Angeles, broke out on HGTV with their first namesake series in 2011, and their TV series output includes spinoffs Buying & Selling and At Home and the competition show Brother vs. Brother, which are produced in part by their Scott Brothers Entertainment shingle.
But the original Treehouse series Builder Brothers Dream Factory that includes best friends Mel and Ayana follows the Scott brothers having children of their own.

If your HBO Max streaming library is looking leaner these days, you're not alone. In recent weeks, HBO original series like Camping, starring Jennifer Garner, Vinyl, the Martin Scorsese-created series starring Bobby Cannavale and Run, starring Merritt Wever and Domhnall Gleeson, have all been quietly pulled from the streamer. When one Twitter user noticed that At Home with Amy Sedaris was no longer streaming—which he said made his six-year-old daughter "burst into tears—he decided to tweet at HBO to ask what happened. "Hi there, thanks for reaching out. As we work to bring together HBO Max and discovery+, we're making some changes to our services," HBO...

Miami-based FiGa Films has picked up worldwide sales rights outside Brazil to “Kevin,” an unprecedented co-production between Brazil and Uganda.
FiGa Films will be taking the documentary to this week’s American Film Market and early December’s Ventana Sur as part of its slate.
By newcomer Joana Oliveira, the doc pivots on her long-time friendship with a vibrant Ugandan mother of three called Kevin whom she met while studying in Berlin some two decades ago.
“Kevin and I have been friends since 1999 and the idea of attesting her importance in my life through a film has only been possible because someone else also saw it as a story to be told,” said Oliveira, adding that the film was shot in Uganda and Brazil and boasted an international crew from both countries as well as from Germany, Kenya and the U.S.

With a diverse lineup of series coming out this year, HBO España is making its mark in Europe with top tier productions that differentiate themselves from the current crop of shows currently on the market, according to the service’s head of original programming.
Discussing the pay TV outlet’s strategy and upcoming productions at this year’s Conecta Fiction Reboot confab, Miguel Salvat, HBO España’s commissioning editor of original programming, said the channel receives and reviews around 1,000 projects a year, and that figure is growing.
“We don’t close the door to anyone, to any person or company, because you never know where the next project that you want to make will come from,” Salvat stressed.
“We’re keeping with that strategy of making few projects,” he added. “What we are looking for in projects are basically three things: an original voice; we are also looking for differentiation,...
