Warner Bros has just made some razor-sharp release-date changes ahead of CinemaCon, ones that could potentially keep the Burbank, CA lot more toward the black this year than in the red.
In a year when there were four $100 million-plus auteur-driven movies — one of which, Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, recently misfired — Warners Bros distribution has taken the pressure off the studios’ schedule in that regard, and even placed a potential tentpole into the year: Zach Cregger’s anticipated genre movie Weapons on August 8.
Cregger’s next movie after Barbarian was previously scheduled for MLK weekend 2026, on January 16. What kept Warners from moving the pic starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner and Alden Ehrenreich was that the theatrical release was tied to Imax screens — can’t give up those auditoriums. In fact, what made all of the release-date changes feasible for Warners was that each was tied to Imax bookings. As...

Back in the 1960s, Irwin Allen created and produced the popular sci-fi TV series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lost in Space, The Time Tunnel, and Land of the Giants. Now, Deadline has broken the news that Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind), who recently co-created the shows Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, is teaming with Legendary Television for re-imaginings of three of those Allen shows: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, The Time Tunnel, and Land of the Giants.
Deadline’s sources tell them that Goldsman and Legendary Television are crafting a unified vision for these stories, bringing modern sensibilities to their timeless appeal, and expanding upon his success in revitalizing the Star Trek universe. Jon Jashni serves as executive producer, guiding this effort to reintroduce these popular franchises to a new generation, with Derek Thielges co-producing.

The first season of Legendary’s MonsterVerse TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ran on Apple TV+ from November into January (you can read our own Alex Maidy’s review of the first batch of episodes Here), and while Godzilla was an important figure in that season, it wrapped up with an episode that indicated Kong might be taking the spotlight if there were to be a follow-up. In April, it was confirmed that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 was a sure thing, then filming began in November. The first season’s star Anna Sawai is back for season 2, and while speaking to the press after winning a SAG award for her role in Shōgun, Sawai teased that the new season will take the show’s characters on “a huge journey.’

The MonsterVerse franchise kicked off in 2014 with Godzilla, and it also added Kong to the mix with 2017's Kong: Skull Island. Since then, the characters faced each other in different films with resounding success. 32 years after Steven Spielberg changed blockbuster filmmaking forever with "Jurassic Park," the franchise is getting a major face lift with this summer's "Jurassic World Rebirth." Directed by Gareth Edwards of "Rogue One" and "The Creator" fame, the film is being billed as a new beginning for the dino-centric property. But it will also, in some ways, be going back to where it all started. That's because screenwriter David Koepp (who also wrote Spielberg's classic movie) is finally making use of a beloved scene from Michael Crichton's original "Jurassic Park" novel.
In a first-look piece published by Vanity Fair, producer Frank Marshall confirmed that the book's famous river raft scene involving the Tyrannosaurus Rex, which was cut from the original "Jurassic Park," will make it to the screen in "Rebirth." Last week, as the town was grappling with the Palisades and Eaton wildfires the Warner Bros Motion Picture Group saw the double exit of lynchpin executives, Worldwide Marketing president Josh Goldstine and International Theatrical Distribution president Andrew Cripps, a corporate maneuver that continues to jar many.
To say that it’s a time of change at the Burbank lot is an understatement.
The year 2025 marks a time of rebuild for the House of Barbie, with an auteur-charged slate of 13 titles anchored by Superman, James Gunn’s feature blast-off to his new DC studio.
Arguably, it’s the first year that Motion Picture Group co-chairs and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy can entirely call their own since taking the reins in the summer of 2022, without any previous regime blemishes, though the two have been involved in the post-production of inherited titles.

Gareth Edwards' underrated sci-fi film finds streaming success two years after its release. The British filmmaker made his feature directorial debut and first rose to prominence with his 2010 sci-fi horror film, Monsters, an independent production made on a small budget of $500,000, with Edwards also serving as the cinematographer, production designer, and a visual effects artist. From there, he graduated on to directing the big-budget monster movie, 2014's Godzilla, which served as the first film in Legendary's Monsterverse franchise.
Next, Edwards took on one of the most highly coveted jobs in Hollywood, directing a Star Wars movie. He helmed Rogue One, which experienced a troubled production, and it was co-writer Tony Gilroy who oversaw the film's extensive reshoots. After that, Edwards didn't direct a film for seven years until his own original sci-fi epic, The Creator, in 2023. Next up, Edwards has joined another major film franchise, having directed the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth,...

When Legendary began the MonsterVerse in 2014, some were skeptical. As much as the 1998 Godzilla movie was fun, it wasn't filled with that grounded, haunting vibe that modern fans wanted. Similarly, subsequent attempts to rejuvenate the Godzilla franchise fell flat. This is why Legendary pushed on with something that could honor the Toho movies but also add its own flair.
While the first Godzilla by Gareth Edwards was a bit incoherent and didn't balance the human-monster dynamic well, the subsequent films did. To this point, the franchise has veered into straight-up sci-fi fun, with a lot of kaiju roving the planet. As the MonsterVerse has continued expanding, more Titans have been introduced of varying powers. While some, such as Kong, Godzilla, and Mothra are well-known, there are also many lesser-known Titans that we wanted to highlight.

Post Christmas Warner Bros is busy making release date changes for next year before it rings in and beyond. The most prolific move is that Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel is heading from Oct. 2, 2026 to Oct. 1, 2027. Production isn’t scheduled to get started until late summer and with a VFX heavy sequel such as this one, a fall 2026 theatrical release is within reach. The Reeves’ movie will have Imax screens.
Funny enough, Warner Bros always had the first weekend of October 2027 staked out for a DC title.
Reeves’ The Batman was the first fire-breathing theatrical release for Warner Bros. post Covid after implementing a day-and-date release strategy on Max; the movie making $369.3M domestic, $772M WW. The feature spawned a Max series, The Penguin, the third-most-watched HBO or Max debut season around the world following The House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.

Will Ferrell is taking it to the streets in his next film, and he'll be delivering (comedic) justice while he's at it. The former Saturday Night Live funnyman and current star of the poignant documentary Will & Harper is reportedly in talks to star in the next film by comedy director Peter Atencio, a Dirty Harry-style feature called Street Justice.
In new reporting from Deadline, Ferrell will produce and star in the new film for 20th Century Studios, being touted as "a Dirty Harry type who goes about taking justice into his own hands," based on a script and original idea by screenwriter David Callaham. This will be the second collaboration between Callaham and Atencio, who previously worked on Jean-Claude Van Johnson together, an action comedy television series starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as a heightened version of himself that they worked on together for Prime Video.

“Dune: Part Two” producer Mary Parent said that despite her own success working on big-budget productions, it’s “harder to get in” now than it was when she started her career decades ago.

Like all the movies that are part of Legendary's Monsterverse, the latest chapter Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is loaded with references to Toho's classic Godzilla movies. The fifth movie in the interconnected universe of planet-shaping kaiju saw the two most famous monsters in movie history temporarily put aside their long-standing Titan rivalry to take down a threat that would be too much for either to defeat on their own. The Monsterverse has provided a good mix of original Titans and iconic creatures from Godzilla's gallery of friends and foes, and Godzilla X Kong features some of both.
The narrative that plays out in Godzilla X Kong takes the Monsterverse, and the characters of Godzilla and Kong in general, to new, fantastic heights. However, moving the franchise into new territory does not mean that the movie ignores the extensive history of the beloved monsters at its core.
