Kamen Rider is a popular franchise in Japan, with the series being one of the premiere names in the tokusatsu genre. Combining costumed, motorcycle-riding heroes with monsters and mayhem, the series and the heroes who bear its name have remained steadfast staples in Japanese pop culture. That success hasn't been matched in the West, though one TV series certainly tried to make that happen.
Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight was the second attempt to bring the masked motorcycle heroes to Western viewers. Made somewhat in the same vein as the Power Rangers, it sadly didn't do much to make the property mainstream outside Japan. However, was still far better than an infamous predecessor, and it likely could have succeeded with a few changes.

Kamen Rider may not have the international recognition of Godzilla — yet. But Toei, whose first “Kamen Rider” live-action TV series aired in 1971, has announced an ambitious project for raising the profile of its motorbike-riding, insect-faced cyborg hero both at home and abroad on the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
Unveiled in April at a splashy live press conference in Tokyo, the project is headlined by a new film, “Shin Kamen Rider,” directed by Anno Hideaki, the creator of the Evangelion sci-fi franchise and the scriptwriter and co-director of the 2016 smash “Shin Godzilla.” Details about the film, including story and casting, are still sparse, though Toei has penciled in a March 2023 release date.
When Variety met project producer Shirakura Shin-chiro at Toei’s Tokyo headquarters, he reaffirmed that his aim was to make “entertainment that viewers can enjoy,” while “targeting a wide demographic.” This is hardly the first time Toei has courted...

For a long time being a fan of Tokusatsu (Japanese super heroes) in America was not easy. While imports of Japanese anime quickly spread throughout fandom, trying to come across Tokusatsu programming was much harder. For years the only official releases were the adapted Power Rangers and a few scant episodes of the original Ultraman.
Slowly but surely though, Tokusatsu has slowly gained a foothold in America. Ultraman is being released from the very beginning in glorious Blu-ray sets, Super Sentai has a had a huge chunk of its series come out on DVD and streaming, and even obscure Metal Hero shows are getting the home media treatment.
If you thought those were great, you aren’t ready for this. On March 17th Shout Factory will be introducing the 24/7 linear streaming channel TokuSHOUTsu on Pluto TV. Yes, that’s right. An online channel dedicated exclusively to Tokusatsu programming. Even better?...

It's no fun when our favorite shows are cancelled. Fortunately, the actors who play characters on those shows often show up in other projects. It's what we like to call "cancelled casting." Here's where you'll be able to find some of your favorite performers:
MTV's Teen Wolf is getting three new cast members. Battlestar Galactica's Michael Hogan will play Allison's (Crystal Reed) grandfather, a lethal werewolf hunter who wants her to follow in his footsteps. Stephen Lunsford (Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight) has been hired to play Matt, a photography-loving teen who will compete with Scott for Allison's attention.
Also on Teen Wolf, Daniel Sharman (The Nine Lives of Chloe King) will be seen as a troubled student who's a new member of the lacrosse team. John Wesley Shipp (Dawson's Creek) is playing his father for two episodes. He's a not-so-nice dad who owns a local...

We're less than two weeks away from the 2011 San Diego Comic Con, and convention organizers have finally released the schedule for the first day of programing. You can find the full schedule on comic-con.org [1], or after the jump I've listed the film and television highlights, which includes the Masters of the Web panel which I've been invited to be a panelist on (In full disclosure, I've been asked to be on this panel for a few years now, but I've only just recently gotten over my fear of speaking in front of large audiences). It should be a fun panel, and I hear they will be giving away some really cool prizes as well. Retro Dreams: Director Wyatt Weed ponders the state of film and how he got here. For most people, dreams don’t come true.
Sure, sometimes you marry your childhood sweetheart, or get the job that you really wanted, the one with the great benefits and the sense of security, but rarely does the childhood dream come true: astronaut, president, secret agent.
For me, the dream has come true – and it is an amazing experience to be aware of it as it happens.
When I was 5, man landed on the moon. I was enthralled, and subsequently committed to being an astronaut for at least the next 6 years – until I saw a movie called “Jaws”, that is. Jaws made me aware of movie making and movie magic, but what I gravitated toward was oceanography. I was obsessed with the study of sharks for at least the next two years of my young life.
