Exclusive: Billy Slaughter (The Card Counter) has boarded Amazon Studios’ film The Burial, which is currently in production in New Orleans.

He joins an ensemble that also includes Jamie Foxx, Tommy Lee Jones, Jurnee Smollett, Mamoudou Athie, Bill Camp, Dorian Missick, Pamela Reed, Amanda Warren, Jim Klock and Alan Ruck, as previously announced.

Director Maggie Betts’ film is based on the New Yorker article by Jonathan Harr. It follows a charismatic personal injury lawyer famous for his impressive track record and loudly unconventional approach who decides to help a funeral home owner save his family business from a predatory corporate behemoth. In a move to bring emotional resonance to a dry contract law case, the lawyer digs up an unexpected and complex web of race, power and oppression that forces everyone to examine long-buried prejudices they didn’t know they had.

HBO Nordic is ramping up its slate of premium Scandinavian drama with “Beforeigners,” a satirical science-fiction series from “Lilyhammer” creators Anne Bjørnstad and Eilif Skodvin.

Set to be directed by popular Norwegian helmer Jens Lien, “Beforeigners” will be headlined by high-profile Nordic stars Nicolai Cleve Broch (“Acquitted”) and Krista Kosonen (“Blade Runner 2049”).

“Beforeigners” marks HBO’s second Scandinavian original production, following Lukas Moodysson’s comedy series “Gösta,” which recently wrapped shooting in Sweden.

Laced with black humor, the six-part crime series takes place in the near future. A new phenomenon starts happening all over the world with powerful flashes of light occurring in the ocean and people from the past mysteriously reappearing. Called “beforeigners,” these people come from three separate time periods: the Stone Age, the Viking era and late 19th century.

HBO Nordic has greenlit its first Norwegian original, Beforeigners, a satirical near-future sci-fi series from Lilyhammer creators Anne Bjørnstad and Eilif Skodvin.

Norway’s 74 Entertainment and Finland’s Don Films have teamed up to launch a new production alliance called Pan Nordic Pictures.

The first project will be a Finnish remake of 74’s Norwegian comedy Opportunity Knocks, in collaboration with Nordisk Film. The story is about a couple who struggle with house renovations.

Pan Nordic Pictures, which also has other investors, will plan to work on “an eclectic slate of feature films and scripted series based on both original content and existing Nordic IP.”

NEW YORK -- With a recurring theme of women and children caught in war zones, the 14th annual Hamptons International Film Festival unveiled a lineup of 18 features in competition and its opening-night film: the world premiere of Philip Haas' Iraq war drama The Situation. Six narrative and six documentary features will compete for Golden Starfish Awards, and six other pictures are part of the Films of Conflict and Resolution competition. "Submissions went up 30% this year, which has made it more competitive for our films," artistic director Rajendra Roy said.
