Sinners Unlocks A New Feat. At The Domestic Box Office ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
The Michael B. Jordan-starrer Sinners has struck a chord with cinemagoers in a way few original films manage, especially in recent years. Adding to its consistent box office haul in North America, the film currently stands at $267 million in the region (via Box Office Mojo). But more notably, it’s claimed a miscellaneous feat in the history of the domestic box office.
Until May 29, Sinners had earned over $1 million every single day since its release — an uninterrupted streak of 41 days. The run finally ended on Thursday, ahead of what was still a strong seventh weekend when Sinners rebounded to earn $5.2 million, despite waning intensity and reduced theater counts. While the dip came just before the weekend could prop it up again, the streak remains a substantial achievement.

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and the box office is looking up after a grim 2024. Last year, “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa” scored the lowest No. 1 Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades, since 1998’s “Casper,” with an estimated $31 million take last year. Conversely, in 2025, Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” is earning a staggering $183 million to set a new box office record, unseating Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick.”
For that reason, it feels like a good time to look back at the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend box office openings of all time, dating back to 1996. Now, it’s important to note these are Memorial Day weekend openings not Memorial Day weekend box office champions – “The Day After Tomorrow” pulled in over $85 million when it opened in 2004, but the top film at the box office for the holiday weekend was holdover “Shrek 2.”

There’s one particular journey the makers of “Arco,” a soulful animated movie premiering in the Special Screenings section of Cannes 2025, are hoping to follow, whether they say it or not. The journey of “Flow.”
That animated triumph premiered to raves at Cannes in 2024 and slowly built momentum until finally winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar earlier this year. For all Cannes represents to global cinema, it had never been a particularly fecund environment for animation: The festival used to play host to splashy premieres for blockbuster hits such as “Shrek 2” and “Bee Movie,” not eventual Academy Award winners. “Flow” changed all that. What would Cannes do for animation next?
This writer is no Oscar prognosticator, but it seems “Arco” is unlikely to repeat that triumph. Not that it isn’t a worthy film — though not as worthy as the wordlessly universal “Flow,” which, at times, truly feels like...

Once you’ve completed this week’s quiz, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post. As always, this is just for fun, but please let us know how you did in the comments (scores out of 30 this week!) and give us any other lovely feedback. No other movie has managed to reach the heights of A Minecraft Movie at the 2025 box office. By some considerable distance, Jared Hess' video game adaptation is the biggest hit of the year, turning in over $909 million from six weeks in theaters, split between a domestic total of $408.9 million and $500.6 million from overseas markets. Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa in lead roles, the movie was always destined to be somewhat of a hit, but, given the frustrating lack of appeal the 2025 theatrical line-up has had on audiences so far, many couldn't have predicted it would be an almost-billion-dollar hit.
After surpassing major blockbusters such as Spider-Man 3, Shrek 2, and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, thanks to another impressive weekend at the box office, A Minecraft Movie has now officially entered the 75 highest-grossing movies in global history. After having completed more than a month of release in theaters worldwide, A Minecraft Movie has passed its biggest milestone yet. The video game adaptation remains the highest-grossing Hollywood film of the year, and is now in the home stretch of its mission to hit the coveted $1 billion mark at the global box office. Directed by Jared Hess, A Minecraft Movie stars hit-makers Jack Black and Jason Momoa in the lead roles, and has successfully demonstrated the power of the Gen-z audience. Its unexpected success can be compared to the viral hit Five Nights at Freddy’s a couple of years ago.
With over $400 million domestically and more than $500 million from overseas markets, A Minecraft Movie’s cumulative global haul has now passed the $900 million mark. It currently stands at $909 million, which puts it ahead of millennial favorites such as Spider-Man 3, Shrek 2, and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

Mel Gibson's Jesus movie, The Passion of the Christ, has been drowning in controversy since the project was announced. Aside from a stunning box office run and multiple award nods, the movie has just become a hit on Netflix 21 years later.
With a sequel on the way over two decades later, The Passion of the Christ's success on streaming was not coincidental. Movies following the life of Jesus Christ were a big hit over the Easter weekend, as expected. Per Tudum, The Passion of the Christ was one of the big hits of the week.
The Mel Gibson-directed film just debuted on Netflix and, for the week between Apr. 16 and 22, it reached the second place spot in the global non-English charts. The movie received 8.5 million views and 17.1 million hours viewed. Although it didn't manage to top the charts, its run 21 years later is still highly impressive.

Animation lovers, rejoice! Shrek is coming back to the big screens in late 2026. This DreamWorks franchise is easily one of the most popular animated properties of this century. So a new film should have united fans both young and old, right? Right? Not exactly, as all anyone can talk about online is the new design of the characters in Shrek 5. It's difficult to define just what exactly is upsetting fans, but it mostly boils down to Shrek looking "different."
This redesign isn't that unexpected, as it's been nearly 16 years since the last Shrek movie. CGI animation has improved in that time, with DreamWorks utilizing new technological methods. It's also been a full 25 years since the inaugural Shrek film, released when CGI was in its infancy. Each of the three subsequent films preserved most of the designs...

The Shrekfranchise has had a hold on pop culture for over two decades since the release of the first film in 2001. The unofficial mascot of DreamWorks, Shrek, has become a figure associated with humor and satire as the film critiques conventional notions of fairy tale stories, mainly poking fun at companies like Disney for its tired tropes. The franchise currently has four main films and two spinoff films centering around the secondary character, Puss in Boots.
With the release of Shrek Forever After in 2010, many thought that this would be the end of the main series. Once talks started to emerge that a fifth film was in development, fans wondered where the series could go next with the main cast of characters. A fifth Shrek film has been officially in the works. It’s set for a December 2026 release date (around the 25th anniversary of the original film) , with original cast members Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy all confirmed. Murphy himself, in the press lead-up to Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, revealed that some recording had already been done for the film and that his character, Donkey, is set for his own spinoff movie. Yesterday, it was announced that Zendaya will be joining in on the next storybook adventure as she’s been cast as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter.
The studio revealed the news in an announcement teaser trailer that showed all the regular principal characters returning, as well as the addition of Zendaya’s character. Just like the Toy Story movies have evolved, many will notice that the animation in the new trailer has been updated with more modern effects.

Zendaya is Meechee, Chani, and Tashi, but now she will be... Felicia, a.k.a. Shrek's daughter in Shrek 5. “Hey magic mirror! Who’s the fairest of them all?” Donkey eagerly asks, once again voiced by Eddie Murphy. The answer apparently is Shrek, as the mirror provides memed versions of the ogre in response.

Among the results is a very buff Shrek, prompting his daughter Felicia (Zendaya) to pop in and gag at it, while Fiona — voiced by a returning Cameron Diaz, after making her acting comeback in Netflix’s “Back in Action” earlier this year — fawns over it.
Who’s responsible for such horrifying images, you ask?...
“Hey magic mirror! Who’s the fairest of them all?” Donkey eagerly asks, once again voiced by Eddie Murphy. The answer apparently is Shrek, as the mirror provides memed versions of the ogre in response.

Zendaya is taking her talents to the swamp.
The mononymous, in-demand actor has joined “Shrek 5” as Felicia, the daughter of Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz).
Universal and DreamWorks, the studios behind the animated adventure set in the land of Far, Far Away, released a teaser along with the updated casting news. In the clip, Shrek’s trustee sidekick Donkey (Eddie Murphy) asks: “Hey Magic Mirror, who’s the fairest of them all?”
Magic Mirror, you know, the one from “Snow White,” responds: “Why Shrek! Of course.”
But this Magic Mirror appears to have a distinctly 21st century twist, allowing the green ogre to swap between various Gen Z-ified looks at Shrek. This prompts very different reactions from Felicia and Fiona as Shrek raises the question of the hour: “Who is making this stuff?” Just then, Pinocchio pops up to tell a nose-growing lie, declaring “Not me!”

Shrek 5 has landed a star that may make other franchises green with envy.
Zendaya has joined the venerable animated film series as the daughter of Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz). She also joins Eddie Murphie, the voice of Donkey.
Zendaya is one of the most in-demand stars working today, with her upcoming schedule including Dune: Messiah, the fourth Spider-Man movie and Euphoria season three. Last year, she starred in Challengers, the well-regarded tennis drama from Luca Guadagnino, as well as Dune: Part Two. Her presence in Shrek 5 gives extra vibrancy to the 25-year-old franchise and could help bring new audiences to the fold.
The feature has a Dec. 23, 2026 release date from Universal and DreamWorks Animation, and is the first in the main series since 2010’s Shrek Forever After.
Shrek veterans Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon direct, along with Minions: The Rise of Gru co-director Brad Ableson.

The arrival of Shrek in 2001 symbolized the pinnacle of animated storytelling until that point, as well as demonstrating the existence of animation studios other than Disney and Pixar. The film made it a point to satirize and subvert the classic fairy tales depicted in earlier Disney movies. Over the years, fans have reflected on Shrek not only as a meme but as a genuinely enjoyable film.
Shrek is an excellent movie by itself, but its sequel, Shrek 2, was arguably even better than the first installment in the franchise. While many animated sequels these days are just retreading the same ground covered by their predecessors, Shrek 2 is one of the few that managed to tell an entirely new story. Shrek 2 added great characters to the franchise, dealt with more expansive themes and lore, and generally improved upon Shrek in every way.

Oscar De La Hoya earned a Grammy nomination back in 2001 for best Latin pop album — so he does know a thing or two about singing. But nonetheless, he faced tough competition on Season 13 of “The Masked Singer,” and so on Wednesday, he was the latest celebrity to be revealed on the hit series.
De La Hoya, who was unmasked as Fuzzy Peas, says he knew he couldn’t compete against some of the golden voices he was up against. “When they asked me to do the show, I was like, ‘Ok, wait a minute. I do have experience with singing.’ I cut an album back in the day, and I got nominated for a Grammy.,” he told Variety. “And so I said to myself, ‘Ok. I have a little voice. I can do something right here.

The first three Shrek movies have once again found themselves in the Netflix global Top 10. As of this writing, Shrek sits at number two, Shrek 2 is at number four, and Shrek the Third is at number eight. While none have yet to crack Netflix's United States top 10 chart, it proves that the animated classics are beloved by audiences worldwide.
When Shrek opened in 2001, it was one of DreamWorks Skg's earliest animated films. The studio was launched in 1994 by Hollywood and music legends Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen. It was seismic, as it was the first major studio in decades and featured three of the most powerful people in entertainment. Spielberg was coming off the dual successes of Schindler's List and Jurassic Park, Katzenberg had turned around Disney's animated film division, and Geffen was one of the biggest music moguls on the planet.

Netflix viewers are kinda into “Kinda Pregnant.” The rom-com starring Amy Schumer secured 25.1 million views in its first week, making it the most-watched title on Netflix from Feb. 3 to Feb. 10. Those numbers are especially impressive considering that the movie directed by Tyler Spindel was released last Wednesday.
Typically comedies prove to be more localized, but that wasn’t the case with “Kinda Pregnant.” The movie hit the top 10 most-watched list in 92 countries.
Schumer’s latest movie was followed by the Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx action comedy “Back in Action,” which secured 9.2 million views. Surprisingly, the “Shrek” franchise took the third and fourth spots. The first movie netted 7.3 million views during the week in question and was followed by “Shrek 2” in 5.5 million views. The Ralph Fiennes horror comedy “The Menu” then rounded out the list as it saw 4.4 million views.

It’s no secret that the Western genre has changed in recent years. It’s no longer acceptable to lean into the old-fashioned — and frankly offensive — “cowboys versus Indians” tales. However, that doesn’t mean all “old” Western content is steeped in offensive stereotypes. While many can’t be separated from their unpleasant cultural norms, there are still some examples of culturally conscientious Western filmmaking. One of the most prominent of these films is — perhaps surprisingly — DreamWorks’ Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.
Marketed as a children’s film, Spirit was both praised and ridiculed by contemporary critics. Viewers hailed its rich visuals and toe-tapping soundtrack. At the same time, others criticized DreamWorks’ Western tale for its culturally conscious narrative. Among its target audience, Spirit joined the lineup of quintessential 2000s “horse girl” movies, but a more mature rewatch quickly reveals its deeper truths.

After more than a decade since the last installment of the franchise, fans are still looking for Shrek 5 to take them back to Far, Far Away. In 2001, the landscape of animated films changed forever when Shrek premiered. A clever amalgamation of wry adult comedy and bucolic, kid-friendly whimsy, it puts a twist on the fairytale format with outrageous trope-smashing characters, a catchy soundtrack, and a wonderful message of self-discovery. It was swiftly followed by Shrek 2 in 2002, Shrek the Third in 2007, and Shrek Forever After in 2010.
Though development has been slow, Shrek 5 is still happening — and despite alterations in direction and storylines, it seems to finally be coming out of the ever-dreaded development hell. The success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has reignited interest in the Shrek franchise with the acclaimed spinoff movie teasing more adventures in the land of Far, Far Away. Deadline (via Toonado.com) has learned that Shrek 5 is now set to open on Wednesday, December 23, 2026. The long-awaited sequel had originally been scheduled for July 1, 2026, so while this delay isn't too big, those extra five months are going to sting for impatient Shrek fans.
On the plus side, Minions 3 has shifted from June 30, 2027, to that July 1 slot. That's a huge jump forward and an indication work on the movie must be progressing well.
It's also been revealed that an untitled Illumination event movie has moved from March 19, 2027 to Minions 3's vacant June date.
Shrek 5 is being released to coincide with DreamWorks' 25th anniversary, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz all set to reprise their respective roles as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona. Shrek franchise veterans Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon will be at the movie's helm.

Universal Pictures will release two of its biggest animated film franchises in 2026, as Minions 3 has been bumped up from 2027, which has delayed Shrek 5 back to a December release. When Shrek 5 was announced to arrive in theaters in the summer of 2026, fans were over the moon. Following the critical and box office success of Puss in Boots and the generational nostalgia for the Shrek franchise, timing Shrek 5 for the franchise's 25th anniversary seemed like a perfect play. The studio gave the DreamWorks Animation film the prime Fourth of July weekend window that Universal has previously used to great success with Illumination's Despicable Me and Minions franchise.

While December 2026 might seem far, far away, “Shrek 5” arrives in time for the franchise’s 25th anniversary and marks the grand return of original “Shrek” stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz to voice Shrek, Donkey and Fiona.
Beginning with 2001’s “Shrek” (which won the first Oscar for best animated feature), the four “Shrek” films have earned more than $2.9 billion worldwide, spawning a global live-touring show and an award-winning Broadway musical that earned eight Tony nominations and 12 Drama Desk nominations,...

As he continues to find success with one of his ongoing movie series, a Will Smith franchise is finding renewed success on streaming. Since his breakout turn with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Smith has found widespread success both as a blockbuster actor and a prestige actor. This, in turn, has netted him four Oscar nominations and one win for Best Actor for King Richard, as well as seven Golden Globe nominations and one win for Best Actor for the same Venus and Serena Williams biopic.
When it comes to his blockbuster productions, Smith has been the face of both a variety of one-off titles and major franchises. Some of the more notable include Roland Emmerich's Independence Day, which helped cement him as a major box office name, 2004's I, Robot and 2007's I Am Legend adaptation. Despite being a pivotal presence in the first movie, Dragon's role was drastically reduced in Shrek 2 - but there's an interesting explanation to account for her absence. All the Shrek movies create an epic saga that satirizes the fairy tale genre while also becoming a great addition to the category in its own right. The series uses just about every fantasy trope that exists, and one of those hallmarks is what allows Dragon to enter the story in the franchise's inaugural installment back in 2001. However, after debuting as Princess Fiona's captor, Dragon all but vanishes from the sequel.
Dragon's Shrek timeline takes her from one of the story's biggest villains to a vital ally of the franchise's titular green character. DreamWorks fails to explain how she came to be the one keeping Fiona imprisoned in 2001's Shrek, but the general situation is so recognizable from fairy tale lore...

For those wondering if Shrek is available on Netflix or any other streaming services, they'll be glad to know the animated fairy tale is easy to watch, rent, and buy. Since Shrek premiered in 2001, the Shrek franchise has continued to dominate the box office and award ceremonies, with even the lesser Shrek and Puss In Boots movies still standing above a lot of other animated children's movies. There's even a case to be made that Shrek 2 and Puss In Boots: The Last Wish are better movies than the original, a testament to the strength of the story.
That's not to say that the first Shrek has somehow not aged well. The DreamWorks hit movie still has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it earned $489 million at the box office (via BoxOfficeMojo). Shrek basically set the tone for the modern animated movie. After Shrek, even animated movies aimed strictly at kids seemed smarter and more knowing,...

The final installment in the highly successful and acclaimed Spider-Verse film has found its directors. Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson have been tapped to direct Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
In an exclusive report from Deadline, it was announced that the Sony Animation project would recruit longtime members of the Spider-Verse family to helm the last film in the trilogy jump-started by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
