In a election that was clearly less contentious than the current one for U.S. president, producer Janet Yang was re-elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by the organization’s Board of Governors. This will be her third consecutive term and comes as no surprise since AMPAS presidents generally are re-elected each year of a possible four single terms as long as they have not been termed out on the Board itself.
Also elected to officer positions by the Board were first-timer Lesley Barber, Vice President; DeVon Franklin, Vice President; Donna Gigliotti, Vice President/Treasurer; Lynette Howell-Taylor, Vice President; and Howard A. Rodman, Vice President/Secretary.

Documentary expertly follows the only woman to have climbed the mountain 10 times through spectacular scenery and a traumatic personal life
This portrait of title subject Lhakpa Sherpa, the only woman to have summited Mount Everest 10 times, is so densely packed with uplifting moments that at times it feels like emotional mountaineering – but the climb has terrific views. British director Lucy Walker toggles back and forth between on-the-snow-face footage of Lhakpa’s latest ascent and interview material where she recounts her life, a story full of extraordinary achievement but also the most tragically quotidian misfortune when she gets married to an abusive alcoholic. Interestingly, like a climb, the getting-to-the-top part is only half the story and as Lhakpa heads back down, footage shot at other times hints at a complex parallel story about an immigrant woman and her daughters’ struggles to process trauma and multicultural life. In some ways, that second...

Behind the counter at a Whole Foods Market in Connecticut, a woman from Nepal goes unnoticed. A single mother, Lhakpa Sherpa takes public transportation to work. No one around her suspects she has summited Mount Everest in her homeland several times. That jaw-dropping feat of physical and mental discipline is an even greater accomplishment considering her upbringing as an illiterate woman in an utterly patriarchal environment. Now, her story of perseverance, not only as a climber but as an immigrant and survivor, is the subject of the poignant and heart-pounding documentary “Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa” from “Waste Land” director Lucy Walker.
Walker first presents segments of an interview where the bubbly Sherpa, speaking in her hard-earned English, wears colorful traditional attire that contrasts with how we’ll later see her: in mountain climbing gear. She shares her belief in a spiritual connection with Everest — for her a...

Charlize Theron’s 2002 critically panned thriller, Trapped, finds new popularity on Netflix’s Top 10
Sometimes, movies that fail to make a splash when they’re initially released find a new audience later in life. It isn’t unheard of that a movie that flopped and exhibited a low critical response can gain a cult following or even newfound popularity. John Carpenter’s career is kind of filled with movies like this. The early 2000s had seen a slew of mid-budget thrillers in an era before mega-budget franchises took over cinemas. One of those films is a 2002 psychological thriller titled Trapped.
Trapped would seemingly get lost in a sea of movies like Along Came a Spider or Enough, as well as similar crime-thriller genre movies made popular by Ashley Judd with films like Double Jeopardy, High Crimes and Twisted. According to ScreenRant, the Charlize Theron and Kevin Bacon film has found new popularity when it cracked Netflix’s Top 10 Movies along with new movies like The Equalizer 3,...

In the early 2000s, Jim Caviezel was on the cusp of Hollywood stardom, as Caviezel’s essential truth-telling, quiet charm, and sheer unpretentiousness gave Caviezel a disarmingly effective screen presence in the films Angel Eyes, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Frequency.
Of course, Caviezel gained worldwide fame with his titular performance in the 2004 Mel Gibson-directed biblical drama film The Passion of the Christ, which was a great commercial success but sharply divided audiences and critics, largely along political and religious lines, as the film was criticized for being excessively violent and containing perceived anti-Semitic representations.
Despite the fact that The Passion of the Christ grossed more than $600 million at the worldwide box office, Caviezel’s strong identification with the film, and especially the role of Jesus Christ, along with Caviezel’s strict adherence to his Catholic faith, seemingly made Caviezel undesirable in Hollywood.

Yang is an Emmy-winning producer with credits on projects including “The Joy Luck Club,” “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” “Zero Effect,” “High Crimes,” “Dark Matter,” “Shanghai Calling” and “Over the Moon.” She climbed to her success in Hollywood after working under Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy who helped show her the ropes at Amblin.
“I’ve felt like an outsider many times throughout my life,” Yang said this year at the Oscars. “It’s wonderful to have a sense of belonging, and terrible not to … If I can help open the door for other women and people of color, I’m thrilled.

Janet Yang has been re-elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by the organization’s Board of Governors.
The producer will be serving her second consecutive one-year term and was widely expected to take the reins once again. Presidents can serve up to four consecutive one-year terms as long as they are eligible, and Yang is only in her fifth year as a Governor-at-Large and thus conceivably could run again in 2024 and 2025. Paramount Plus' TV series, Fatal Attraction, boasts a talented cast, with several well-known actors playing iconic characters, Alex Forrest and Dan Gallagher. Based on the 1987 psychological thriller of the same name, the Fatal Attraction TV series will see Alex Forrester and Dan Gallagher once again engage in a passionate but tumultuous rendezvous that soon turns deadly when Alex begins to harass Dan and his family after he breaks off their 'relationship'. Although the plot did face backlash for stigmatizing mental health conditions and perpetuating harmful stereotypes towards women, the 1987 movie ended up being nominated for 6 Academy Awards, with Glenn Close gaining her fourth "Best Actress" Oscar nomination.

Jeffrey Dahmer is one of America’s most notorious and infamous serial killers. Between 1978 and 1991, he was responsible for the deaths and dismemberment of 17 men and boys. He earned the “cannibal” nickname after it was discovered that he had actually consumed the flesh of some of his victims and stored their remains inside his refrigerator. Since then, there have been five feature-length films and documentaries, several books, and multiple television documentaries that tell his story. Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story) and Ian Brennan (The Politician) have teamed up with Netflix to create a new limited series about Dahmer. The series will consist of 10 episodes, each told from the different perspectives of Dahmer’s various victims. The pilot will be directed by Carl Franklin (High Crimes), and the remaining episodes will be directed by Paris Barclay (Glee) and Janet Mock (Hollywood), in addition to Franklin.

From the start, the Damned Things’ existence seemed unlikely: What were two dudes from Fall Out Boy doing in a band with the guy from Anthrax? But Fob lead guitarist Joe Trohman and drummer Andy Hurley knew their hard rock, and ended up sounding right at home on the band’s 2010 debut album, Ironiclast, alongside Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian and singer Keith Buckley of the metalcore band Every Time I Die. Their excellent, just-released second album, High Crimes, though, is truly improbable, if only because it showed up with little...

Charles Roven’s Atlas Entertainment has acquired the rights to Joseph Finder’s thriller “Judgment,” and plans to adapt the novel into a series, Variety has learned exclusively.
The novel centers on Juliana Brody, a formidable judge in the Superior Court of Massachusetts. After a one-night affair with a man she meets at a conference, Juliana quickly realizes she’s being blackmailed, and her night of infidelity was captured on video. As the terrifying conspiracy unfolds, it becomes clear that personal humiliation, even the possible destruction of her career, are the least of her concerns: and that turning the tables on her adversaries will require her to be as ruthless as they are.
Roven, who produced “The Dark Knight” and “Wonder Woman,” will executive produce the series alongside Atlas president Richard Suckle. Atlas’ Robert Amidon, who brought the project to the company, will serve as a producer. The company’s...

The end is finally upon us. “The Leftovers” airs its final episode this Sunday on HBO, and with it comes the close of one of television’s all-time great drama series. Over the course of its three-season run, “The Leftovers” has earned acclaim for Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, as well as the ensemble cast, but it would be a shame to say goodbye to this series without spotlighting the men and women behind the camera.
“The Leftovers” and its point-of-view storytelling always allowed different directors to leave their mark on the series. Through memorable sequences and shots, these seven directors made “The Leftovers” an emotionally visceral and downright spiritual experience. It’s safe to say there won’t be another series like it for some time, but television is in good hands as long as these filmmakers are guiding it.

More than one year after first signing on, director John Singleton has reportedly backed out of the Untitled Tupac Shakur Project, with Showbizz 411 claiming that Carl Franklin is set to replace him at the helm. Carl Franklin's name was attached to a casting call which is seeking an actor to play Tupac Shakur himself. John Singleton had been working on the script for quite some time, and even discussed the project at length on the Oscars red carpet just months ago. But the director recently revealed to Xxl Magazine that the project is on hold. Here's what he had to say in the interview:
"I think the picture is not going to be good unless it's offensive to some people. So, whenever you make a movie, you always have different elements that people have their say about. But when I'm making my movies, John Singleton movies, it's really just my voice.

Snake Plissken had to hustle to escape the clutches of the Uspf after ripping the innards out of that critical cassette tape following his rescue of the President. While that crucial decision may have been the end of John Carpenter’s cult classic 1981 film, it’s only the beginning of the Escape From New York comic book series from Boom! Studios.
Hitting comic shop shelves today, the third issue sees Snake getting entangled in more politics-fueled peril after the leaders of the Free Republic of Florida force him to train their troops. If you haven’t picked the latest issue up yet, we have a set of preview pages teasing Snake’s brutally honest training sessions.
