One of the best games for Nintendo 64

    Rated E

I never actually owned a Nintendo 64 but I have played one many times. In my opinion along with Conkers Bad Fur Day, Super Mario 64 is one of the best video games for the Nintendo 64 system.I have played this game plenty of times and its good every time.If you have an N64 and don't have this game you should try to find it.The original Super Mario Bros games were side scrolling video games but Super Mario 64 has a 3D Mario in a nice 3D environment. The game is sort of weird but there is plenty of things you can do in the game. You play as Super Mario and once again you must rescue Princess and the 120 power stars from Bowzer. Now you can do it in a 3D environment.Super Mario 64 is a very fun and good N64 game and I recommend it.

    The rebirth of a legend...

Mario 64 has enchanted our minds way before Zelda or GoldenEye. It felt so diverse, so powerful, and yet so fun, that you wouldn't let go of your controller. Shigeru Miyamoto did an excellent job of creating Mario in a seamless 3-D world with true freedom. It's one of the best N64 games out there!

    My favourite childhood gaming experience.

This game is amazing. Really, you should get it if you don't have it. Although it is ancient now it was amazing when it came out. I believe that this game will always be a classic. It's just as good a Super Mario World or so. When I was young, my friend and I would sit and play this game for hours trying to beat it which we eventually did. It's not nearly as advanced as Super Mario Galaxy, but if you are a fellow Mario fan it is essential. It's fun entertaining and challenging. Everything you could want out of a fantasy game except for good graphics, (well it did come out in 1996.) ROCK ON 4EVA MARIO LUIGI AND YOSHI!!! Nintendo is the best!

One of the Nintendo 64's best games

Mario is invited to Princess Peach's castle for cake. When Mario gets there, he finds out that Bowser has kidnapped her! Mario must save the day again. Unlike the 2-D games, Mario can explore anything he wants to. He can just roam around, climb trees trying to look for 1-Ups, find secrets in levels, and more. You can spend four hours in one level. No time limits. There are 16 worlds, with a number of stages, and there are star doors, which you need a certain number of stars to get into. Once you get in these star doors, you must go through a stage and fight Bowser at the end of the stage. To get to certain worlds, you need a number of stars to get in. You enter the world by going through a painting. There is so much stuff to do and so many hours of gameplay, I don't see how anyone could dislike this game. It's great. This launch title is the game that insured gamers that the N64 would have a good life. Every 3D plat-form game we know of has something in common with SM64. Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie are examples that are commonly used. Super Mario 64 is one of the greatest games in the history of 3D games. 10 out of 10. If you have an N64, buy this game. It's hard to find used, because no one's selling this baby for 5 bucks at the pawn shop. A perfect 10.

    Essential Nintendo 64 game.

When Nintendo 64 came out Christmas of '96, I remember the hype and anticipation and was surprised to receive one as a present for Christmas the very year news programs were alerting viewers that stores were being raided in search of the systems. It was worse then than now -- remember the Tickle Me Elmo fury? N64 was bigger, and worse.

Anyway, along with the platform was included the essential and unarguably most popular N64 game, "Super Mario 64." This was a breakthrough at the time. Nowadays, it's old-fashioned and the game has been adapted for a hand-held system. Back in 1996 (less than ten years ago mind you) it took a huge system to play the game.

It was breathtaking, then. The three-dimensional, fully-immersible world was amazing and unseen. As a result much of this game is kind of "showy" -- it does attempt to wow and amaze. But it only enriches the game play because Nintendo poured EVERYTHING into making this the most overwhelming game ever at that point in time -- it was awesome.

The game is still a classic and one of the best you'll ever play. Technically speaking it's not your standard Mario game because it's three-dimensional and features more of a plot and more options etc. -- but I like that for what it is. The two-dimensions has its qualities, and so does this.

"Mario 64" is a great game and still one of the best you can ever play. If you have never had a chance to play this, go to Ebay and spend thirty bucks and get an N64 and this game. It's worth it.

    • Trivia
When the game was still new and popular, rumors persisted that Luigi and Wario were in the game. These rumors have long been proven false, although those characters did appear in the later port, Super Mario 64 DS (2004). But in 2020, deep in the code someone found Luigi. He is not used or accessible in the game, but he exists in the code.
    • Goofs
When the player talks to Yoshi on the roof of the castle in the courtyard, a spelling error can be seen in Yoshi's dialogue, with the first line of text reading "Mario!!! It that really you???" It should be "Mario!!! Is that really you???"

    • Alternate versions
Remade the Nintendo DS under the fitting title of "Super Mario 64 DS". Released as a launch title in 2004, this game is a complete retooling of "Super Mario 64" from the ground-up, adding 30 new Power Stars to the original game and featuring 4 playable characters (Mario, Yoshi, Luigi and Wario) each with unique abilities and gameplay attributes. Character movement is done with either the D-Pad or the DS's touch screen, and a "run button" is included to make up for the lack of analog control. In addition to a number of new stages being added, most of the pre-existing ones have been retooled in some way with layout changes or new mechanics, and a number of stage missions have been remixed or completely removed in some cases. Other changes include new items and stage obstacles, modified text/dialogue, different camera controls, a detailed map screen for each part of the game, a four-player competitive multiplayer mode, and a collection if minigames made to showcase the DS's touch screen and microphone capabilities.
