Bobby Deol and Shabana Raza in Kareeb (1998)
Birju is a young man who lives with his mom, dad, elder brother, Bhabhi and nephew in an upper middle class home. His father would like him to work as well as accept some responsibility, but Birju does not heed him, but is instead interested in petty thievery, lies, and romancing a beautiful young woman named Neha. When he proposes marriage, his mom and dad hope that this will set him on the right path, and they approve of his marriage with Neha. When Neha finds out the truth about Birju, she refuses to marry him, and re-locates to another town. Birju is unable to get Neha out of his mind, and he runs away from home, hoping to locate Neha somewhere, and try to patch things with her. He does find Neha and her mom, who is hospitalized. When Birju makes inquiries he is told that Neha's mom is due for major surgery, and that this operation will cost a lot of money. Birju steals the money to pay for the surgery, and when he goes to deposit this money at the hospital, he finds out to his dismay that her operation has already taken place, and that Neha is to marry the doctor who performed this operation.

      Heart Touching..emotions painted by Director..

well..i would rather say that somewhere Bollywood movie viewers seek that tradition and that effect in a lover who lives in Indian family situations..after so long time i have watched such a movie that reminds typical fantasizing nature oriented meeting of a hero-heroin with yellow dupatta and a simple look most Indian girls keep in villages. Director had good sense of what to show to Indian audience, but typically a love story during the time when generation preferred action movies of the same actor(Bobby Deol)..is worth watching..the big hairs he had for the movie has shown that even he tried to do some emotional acting to show the shade of the character...a good place to shoot was selected by the film makers..

Nothing more than a similar hit in India the year before.

This the first review i am writing on IMDB. Maybe i should have taken the initiate and written bout a movie i really really loved (or really really hated) to make it memorable. But anyway, i felt like writing and so i am, who cares bout any sense of direction or purpose.

Watch the movie and you'll think Chopra-gi felt much the same. There is the yellow dupata waving in the wind that was a nice formula that worked well elsewhere. There is Johnny Lever (whose 'acting talent' seems constrained to one specific line of attack) thrown in for good measure.

Don't people in India ever get tired of this crap. I have to admit the songs are good, atleast i remember them being good in 1998, but like 99% others it is forgotten 3 years later. Nothing unusually clever about the film, though i strongly doubt u would be readin this review here if u were out looking for a clever hindi film.

Watch it if all u want are a few songs, nice locales and ofcourse beautiful Neha and chota Dharmendra 'pasgaya pyaar mein' moods.

Take care and i really think more people should write reviews you know. It is always nice to know why someone hates the movie i love and so on.

Ofcourse you didn't need me to say any of this rite!! :)

      A Simple yet touching rendition

Yes, this movie is romantic, Yes the story starts by boy and girl falling in love, Yes it happens in all romantic stories. But where this movie stands apart is the treatment and picturisation of of story that is so touching and mesmerizing that you immediately connect to the small town guy, that is Birju.

Songs are simply fabulous and remain in my play-list till this day. the innocent and heartfelt portrayal of characters brings the story alive and melodious music keeps enchanting you long after you finish watching it.

If you like Hindi melodrama set in a gorgeous Himalayan town and love good melodious music, you will not be disappointed.

      a high level movie

this movie was a truly unique indian movie because it was smart throughout. the performances were tremendous. early on we see that bobby deol provides all the comedy. as the film progresses and becomes serious; johnny lever steps in to brilliantly provide much needed comic relief. in these kinds of movies it is important that the audience can relate to the characters. watching this movie you will feel what the characters are going through. its superb cinematography gives the movie a dream-like ambience. this is an instant classic, although its success at the box office will not suggest it.
