Woody Allen Says Actors Who Refused to Work With Him ‘Made A Mistake’
Image
While Woody Allen’s movie career was unaffected for two decades after sexual abuse allegations and his relationship with partner Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn, that all changed during the #MeToo movement. Suddenly, A-list actors no longer wanted to appear in his films. Other stars who’d appeared in Allen movies distanced themselves from the director.

Not Bill Maher! He counted himself among Allen’s defenders on this week’s Club Random podcast, alongside stars such as Scarlett Johansson and Alec Baldwin. Maher called out others, including Kate Winslet, Mira Sorvino (who won an Oscar for Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite) and Greta Gerwig, who publicly expressed their regret...

‘Apollo 13’ star Kathleen Quinlan relives the 1996 Oscars, from a Whoopi wink to a Sorvino hug
Image
The winners of the Best Supporting Actress Oscar belong to an exclusive club. But Apollo 13 star Kathleen Quinlan can boast to membership in an equally select society — call it the Whoopi Goldberg Wink Squad.

Quinlan was inaugurated into that group three decades ago at the 68th Academy Awards, held on March 25, 1996. The then-41-year-old actress walked the red carpet outside the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion as a Supporting Actress nominee for her role as Marilyn Lovett in Ron Howard’s space acclaimed space drama. Inside, meanwhile, Goldberg was preparing for her second appearance Oscar host, replacing the previous year’s controversial emcee, David Letterman.

And the comedian couldn’t resist tweaking the late night host right out of the gate. “So… didja miss me?” Goldberg asked the crowd with a smile. She then proceeded to launch into her stage patter, which riffed on the proliferation of colorful ribbons at that year’s ceremony,...

Cruz has received four Oscar nominations throughout her career. Her first nomination was for Best Actress for the film “Volver” in 2006. She subsequently received two Best Supporting Actress nominations for “Vicky Christina Barcelona” in 2008 and “Nine” in 2009. She received another Best Actress nom for "Parallel Mothers" (2021).

Mikey Madison's Oscar Win for 'Anora' Continues a Telling Hollywood Trend
Image
At the 97th Academy Awards this past Sunday, Mikey Madison won Best Actress in a Leading Role for her eponymous role in Sean Baker's Anora. Anoratook home five other Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. It follows the titular character as she embarks on a whirlwind romance and eventual "fraud marriage" with the son of a Russian Oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn). In her victory speech, the 25-year-old Madison(who also made history by becoming the first Gen Z actor to win an Oscar) proudly thanked and honored the sex worker community.

While Anora and Mikey Madison's win is one of the most overt examples of the Oscars recognizing sex work in recent memory, it has happened more times than many people may realize. 14 different women have taken home Academy Awards for portraying sex workers. In fact, Emma Stone also won in 2024 for portraying Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lantimos' Poor Things.

Why ‘Anora’ never would have won Best Picture 15 years ago
Image
This is clearly not your parents' Motion Picture Academy. Anora won Best Picture at the Oscars on Sunday, one of five awards claimed by the indie film from director Sean Baker. It's an unconventional Oscar champ to say the least, but unconventional seems to be the new standard for voters, who have made a series of daring choices over the last decade. It appears as though the Academy's efforts to expand and diversify its ranks are paying off. While diversity in business and government faces a vicious backlash, Anora shows how Dei has transformed the Oscars.

Oscars 2025: Anora’s Mikey Madison Becomes 16th Actress To Win For Portraying A Prostitute, Joining Anne Hathaway, Emma Stone & Charlize Theron’s Club
Image
Did Mikey Madison win an Oscar for portraying a prostitute in Anora? (Photo Credit – AnoraFilm Instagram)

The 2025 Academy Awards came and went in a whirlwind, forging legacies for a slew of talents, though it’s the newcomers who galvanize the most intrigue with their ties to the golden statuette. Amid the night’s fervor, one victory stood out — a triumph that spotlights both a fresh face and a storied trope.

Mikey Madison, the 25-year-old dynamo from Anora, seized her first Oscar for Best Actress, outpacing The Substance’s Demi Moore in a twist few had prognosticated. The win, flanked by Anora’s haul of Best Picture, Director, and more, incentivized a floodlight on her nascent Hollywood path.

Maddison’s raw and unapologetic portrayal of the titular sex worker elucidated a character far from cliché, cementing her ascent with a cataclysmic bang. That win didn’t transpire without etching new stats...

When it comes to crime movies and TV shows, authenticity is key. Fortunately, Sirico parlayed his authentic neighborhood qualities into several mob characters, including an early role in Martin Scorsese's landmark mob film Goodfellas. Of course, Goodfellas and The Sopranos share 27 actors, with Sirico's Paulie Walnuts cemented in the pantheon of all-time favorite TV mafiosos. Image
Nearly 30 years after the release of the ’90s cult hit film “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion,” stars Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are in talks to return for a legacyquel produced by 20th Century Studios.

Released in 1997, the film follows a pair of 29-year-olds who realize they haven’t done much with their lives since graduating high school, and decide to make up a story that they struck it rich after inventing Post-it Notes. The film was released by Touchstone Pictures, a release label established by Disney for films aimed at adult audiences.

With the acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, Disney now has that studio and its specialty counterpart Searchlight Pictures to fill the role once held by Touchstone. Selena Gomez's Oscars 2025 Hopes Look To Be Over Now, Despite Giving One Of Her Best Ever Performances
Image
Selena Gomez's chances at earning her first acting nomination at the Oscars could now be ruined. Although she is perhaps best known as a pop star and businesswoman, Gomez has also been an actor since she was a child. After being cast on Barney & Friends in the early 2000s, she went on to play roles in a variety of prominent film and television projects, including Wizards of Waverly Place, Only Murders in the Building, Hotel Transylvania, and Spring Breakers.

However, she delivered one of her best performances yet after joining the Emilia Pérez cast. The 2024 Jacques Audiard musical, which also stars Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón, sees Gomez playing the wife of a Mexican cartel leader. In addition to allowing her to showcase her musical chops in performances of songs such as the Oscar-shortlisted "Mi Camino," the movie has allowed her to be considered an Oscar frontrunner...

“They said he was a bully”: Only One Actor in ‘The Sopranos’ Made David Chase Change the Script, It Wasn’t James Gandolfini
Image
The Sopranos creator David Chase had a clear vision of what he wanted his characters to be. He was very strict about his storylines and the dialogue of the characters. However, he admitted that he once had to concede to the demand of an actor on the show. The demand came from Tony Sirico, who played Paul Gualtieri aka Paulie Walnuts, and Chase believed that Sirico’s demand was fair.

David Chase revealed that Sirico wanted to remove the word ‘bully’ from another actor’s line about his character. Chase revealed this rather sensitive side of Sirico in the wake of his passing in 2022. Sirico also had major roles in Goodfellas and several Woody Allen films including Mighty Aphrodite.

Woody Allen movies: 25 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Woody Allen is a four-time Academy Award winner who has proved incredibly prolific in his decades-long career, writing, directing, and oftentimes starring in nearly a film a year for over 50 years. But how many of those are classics? Let’s take a look back at 25 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

After years as a joke writer and standup comic, Allen transitioned into filmmaking penning such screenplays as “What’s New Pussycat?” (1965) and starring in such titles as “Casino Royale” (1967). His first credit as a director was the comedically overdubbed Japanese spy thriller “What’s Up, Tiger Lily?” (1966).

The Woody Allen as we know him emerged in 1969 with the farcical mockumentary “Take the Money and Run” (1969), made when he was 34 years old. The success of that film led to a string of critically acclaimed absurdist comedies, including “Bananas” (1971) and “Sleeper” (1973).

He established himself as an important filmmaker with the romantic...

Guillermo del Toro’s career is filled with gems, with only a few dings along the way. One of those rare hiccups was Mimic, his 1997 sci-fi horror flick starring Norman Reedus, Mira Sorvino, and Jeremy Northam. Released during an era when teen slashers were all the rage, this bug-monster filled thriller struggled to lure audiences in theaters.

While creepy creatures and a dose of sci-fi should’ve been a killer combo, Mimic just couldn’t find its footing. Here’s why this eerie experiment didn’t quite take flight!

How Mimic Became A Bump in Guillermo Del Toro’s Career

Based on Donald A. Wollheim’s short story, Mimic spins a wild tale about disease-carrying cockroaches evolving into human-hunting monsters.

Blue Bloods Season 14 Star Confirms Series Finale Will Include One Show Tradition: "[It] Will Resonate With Fans"
Image
A long-running tradition of Blue Bloods will continue for the show's final episodes. Blue Bloods season 14 is confirmed to be the show's last. But even as the popular procedural prepares to sign off, with the last episodes starting to roll out Friday, October 18 at 10 Pm Et on CBS, the central Reagan family might still have a few surprises.

Previewing the final episodes of Blue Bloods, star Bridget Moynahan told Entertainment Weekly that the CBS show will wrap up with some revelations being unearthed at the Reagan family's last on-screen dinner, which has been a staple of the series. Is Blood Bloods preparing spinoffs for two huge guest stars? We may be seeing backdoor pilots!
Image
Is Blue Bloods prepping not one but two spinoffs? The big casting news for Season 14B seems to hint at that!

For a show that's run 14 seasons and is one of the biggest hits on its network, it's truly amazing Blue Bloods has never gotten a spinoff. Given CBS loves its franchises like FBI and NCIS, one would think it's natural. Heck, Fire Country has only had two seasons and it's getting a spinoff.

A reason may be how Blue Bloods is always focused on the Reagans more than other characters, and it's hard to see a show working without that connection. That family bond has made the show a huge hit, even if the upcoming second half of Season 14 will be the last.

There have been rumors of a possible spinoff with Donnie Wahlberg even hinting at one, although it may not be about his character, Danny Reagan. An...

Mia Farrow 'Understands' Actors Who Still Choose to Work with Woody Allen
Image
Mia Farrow understands if actors want to continue to collaborate with Woody Allen. That's surprising, given the history between the two; their 12-year romantic relationship concluded after Farrow discovered nude pics of her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn that Allen had taken. Following their split, things got worse. Farrow and Allen's adopted daughter Dylan, then 7, made allegations of molestation against the Academy Award-winning filmmaker.

While appearing on CBS Sunday Mornings on September 1, journalist Seth Doane asked Farrow:

"Are you able to separate the experience as an actor in those films from the personal trials and tribulations that would follow?"

Farrow responded:

"Oh yeah, yeah.I com pletely understand if an actor decides to work with him. I'm not one who'd say, 'Oh, they shouldn't.'"

Peter Weller has been in some of the most acclaimed films of the 80s and 90s. He starred in Buckaroo Banzai, Mighty Aphrodite, The New Age, and Naked Lunch. In the 2000s and 2010s, he played Christopher Henderson and Stan Liddy in the fifth seasons of 24 and Dexter respectively. In film, he most popularly appeared as Alexander Marcus in 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness.

Peter Weller in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension

People over the years have mostly associated Weller with his iconic role of Alex Murphy in 1987’s RoboCop. The thrilling and thought-provoking sci-fi flick became a groundbreaking yet misunderstood film at the time, similar to Blade Runner. However, director Paul Verhoeven initially felt the script was too alien to him and far removed from his previous works.

Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars), Parker Young (Imposters), Nestor Carbonell (The Dark Knight Rises), and Academy Award® winner Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite) star in this twisted tale of deception and desire based on the bestselling thriller by Adele Parks. Identical twins Anna and Zoe find their bond tested over Anna's new love, Nick. While the trusting Anna is head over heels, her skeptical sister Zoe senses a web of deceit. But as Zoe digs for the truth, they're all pulled into a dangerous game where honesty could prove fatal. I'm doing this one for Josh. Winning an Oscar by making us laugh. What a way to make a living!

What makes a performance “Oscar-worthy”? Many often leap to sustained emotional investment or comprehensively immersive transformations as the benchmark for success at the Academy Awards. But if the Oscars celebrate the performances that elicit the strongest emotional responses then why do show-stopping comedic performances so often receive the cold-shoulder? There is a relatively easy answer to this question found within the progression of American film across the past half-century. Cinema throughout the 1930s, 40s, and 50s saw the proliferation of genre filmmaking, with behemoths like the musical, western, epic, and comedy reigning supreme. During these decades, all of these styles saw success both popularly as cherished classics amongst the general public, and prestigiously as consistent award show champions.

Oscars: How many acting lineups have only included rookies?
Image
Throughout the 96-year history of the Academy Awards, the amount of acting lineups consisting only of first-time nominees has reached 37, or about 10% of the overall total. While that number may not seem high in a general sense, these cases actually outnumber those exclusively involving veteran contenders by a ratio of three to one. However, although this list expanded as recently as 2023, rookie-only acting lineups are gradually becoming less common than veteran-only ones, the amount of which has nearly doubled within the last dozen years.

Whereas 75% of veteran-only acting quintets have involved lead performers rather than supporting ones, almost the exact opposite is true of lineups full of newcomers. For instance, only one existing case of the former kind concerns supporting actresses, whereas the same category has produced 15 rookie-only rosters. The last such group consisted of 2000 winner Angelina Jolie and nominees Toni Collette (“The Sixth Sense”), Catherine Keener (“Being John Malkovich...

Twister: what happened to the cast of Jan de Bont’s disasterpiece?
Image
Back in 1996, the Twister cast, outside of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton was largely unknown. At the time, not too many of them were famous. However, in the years since the film, much of that has changed and much of the Twister cast has gone on to fame both in front and behind the camera.

Helen Hunt was arguably the film’s biggest star in the cast back in ’96, but she wasn’t the first choice for the movie. Before the role of Dr. Jo Harding went to her, Jurassic Park standout Laura Dern, Bridget Fonda, and Kate Mulgrew almost wore the good doctor’s white tank top and reinforced mud-stompers. Initially, Tom Hanks eyed the role of Bill Harding but ultimately felt Twister wasn’t the right fit for his brand of character creation. Other actors floated for Bill Harding include Kevin Costner, Michael Keaton, Kurt Russell, Richard Gere,...

‘Dancing With The Stars’ Week 5: See Who Earned Season’s First 10 On Len Goodman Tribute Night
Image
It’s been six months beloved judge Len Goodman passed, but Dancing with the Stars isn’t ready to say goodbye just yet.

Though Tuesday’s theme was Most Memorable Year, the Week 5 episode was really meant to honor Goodman, who died from prostate cancer in April at the age of 78. After airing a sentimental package featuring past pros talking about what an honor it was to be both complimented and criticized by Goodman, the episode then featured a dance tribute to “Moon River” that was waltzed to perfection by current pros and past faves Kym Johnson, Anna Trebunskaya, Karina Smirnoff, Edyta Sliwinska, Tony Dovolani, Louis van Amstel, Maks Chmerkovskiy and Mark Ballas.

It ended with the troupe gesturing to an empty middle chair on the judges’ dais. Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli wept.

Pamela Blair, who originated the role of the surgically enhanced Valerie Clark in the Broadway smash A Chorus Line, died Sunday at her home in Phoenix, Arizona, following a lengthy illness. She was 73.

Her death was reported by friends on social media, including her A Chorus Line co-star Baayork Lee. “I am very sad to say my Sagittarian sister Pam Blair has gone to play with her [A Chorus Line] colleagues among the clouds,” wrote Lee in a Facebook post. Sharing a Dec. 5 birthday, the two actors “always wrote to one another no matter where we were on that day,” Lee said, recalling how Blair ” brought the house down every night” with the showstopping performance of “Dance: Ten, Looks: Three.”

Sound Of Freedom Cast & Character Guide
Image
Sound of Freedom is defying expectations at the box office in the summer of 2023, and it's not just because of its talented cast. The 2023 action movie is based on the story of anti-sex trafficking activist Tim Ballard, who quit his job with the Department of Homeland Security to found a nonprofit organization that aims to end child trafficking. The film centers around his career change and one of his first missions to save children from sex traffickers in Colombia. It's a difficult story to witness, but an important one regardless.

The real-life Tim Ballard was involved in the making of the film, and he even knew exactly which actor he wanted to play him in Sound of Freedom — Jim Caviezel. Thankfully, director Alejandro Monteverde and the producers were able to snag the dream casting. Caviezel gives a brilliant performance in Sound of Freedom, but his character wasn't the only prominent figure in the 2023 film.

These included Olivia Newton John, Ray Liotta, Angela Lansbury, Jean-Luc Godard and Irene Cara.

Other stars to be featured in the segment were Burt Bacharach, Nichelle Nichols, Kirstie Alley and Racquel Welch.
