Sitting alongside our list of upcoming DVD and Blu-ray releases (that you can find here), we’re also keeping a calendar for those who support the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc format. As we learn of new UK releases, we’ll add them to this list.

We have started adding shopping links too. We’d be obliged if you clicked on them, as it really helps us in our quest to make the Film Stories project of magazines, website and podcast profitable. It's not easy to make a name for yourself in the world of film and television, especially when everyone else is trying to do the same thing. Some talent, whether they be actors, writers, or filmmakers, get lucky in their first few projects, while others won't get to see the fruits of their industry labor until much further down the line. Clint Eastwood technically made his big screen debut in 1955 in an uncredited role in "Revenge of the Creature," yet kept finding himself in bit parts over the next few years. Even "Rawhide," the television western career gig that got his foot in the door, would take up seven and a half years of his life on CBS. There's a lot of family-friendly classics celebrating major anniversaries this year, like The Goonies and Toy Story, just to name a few. However, if you were born in the '90s, one coming-of-age horror comedy was on most people's rewatch list every Halloween: 1995’s Casper, which just turned 30 years old this spring. Now, to mark the spooky and exciting occasion, this “Friendly Ghost” is getting a new 4K release.

Casper’s latest physical media release is a scream-worthy 4K/Blu-ray/Digital combo pack steelbook from Universal Pictures. The front cover of the edition features the original poster artwork of Casper and his frightening uncles haunting the main mansion of the film on a moonlit night. The inside artwork includes an image of Casper and star Christina Ricci. This release will presumably have the same special features as previous physical media editions, like the 25th anniversary Blu-ray steelbook. This new steelbook will be $29.99 Usd.

Just as news of a fourth Meet the Parents movie heats up, the original will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary with a new 4K Blu-ray physical media release from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The company also recently announced a similar release for the 30th Anniversary of Casper. It looks as if they are dedicating the same kind of attention to the Ben Stiller/Robert De Niro comedy that comes from Austin Powers director Jay Roach. According to Blu-ray.com, the new 4K remaster is due to hit retailers later this summer on August 12.

“Male nurse Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) is all set to propose to his girlfriend, Pam (Teri Polo), during a weekend at her parents’ home. Casper will celebrate its 30th anniversary with SteelBook and standard 4K Uhd + Blu-ray + Digital releases on August 12 via Universal.

Based on the classic Harvey Comics character created by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo, the 1995 film is presented in 4K with Dolby Vision Hdr and Dolby Atmos audio.

The best-selling author of all time, as of this writing, remains William Shakespeare, a little-known British playwright from Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire, who lived from April 23, 1564 to April 23, 1616. He's not nearly as well-known as his contemporaries Ben Jonson, Philip Henslowe, or John Fletcher. 

But I kid the Bard. There isn't a student in the English-speaking world who wasn't forced through at least four or five Shakespeare plays in high school. Raise your hand if you still remember a Shakespearean soliloquy you were required to memorize for your 10th-grade English class. 

After Shakespeare, some of the best-selling authors of all time include Agatha Christie, Danielle Steele, Harold Robbins, J.K. Rowling, Eiichiro Oda (the author of the "One Piece" manga), and Jackie Collins. No doubt you've explored some of these authors in your spare time at airports.

A ton of iconic films are celebrating major anniversaries this year: Jaws, Friday the 13th, and Back to the Future are just some of the key ones. However, if you're a '90s kid, Casper was a repeat watch in most households. The 1995 horror-comedy based on the beloved “Friendly Ghost” starred a young Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman. Its 30th anniversary has spawned new merchandise, including some haunting apparel collections. Now, Funko is adding to the spooky party with their new Casper Pop collection.

Their anniversary collection contains three frighteningly cute figures: Ricci’s Kat Harvey; a three-pack of Stretch, Fatso and Stinkie; and Casper. On May 26, Sawa celebrated the thirty-year anniversary of 1995's Casper by sharing an image of the movie's original promo poster on Twitter. Although the post wasn't shared with any accompanying caption, the intent was perfectly clear, and fans responded in kind with an outpouring of love for the iconic film in the comments.

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and the box office is looking up after a grim 2024. Last year, “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa” scored the lowest No. 1 Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades, since 1998’s “Casper,” with an estimated $31 million take last year. Conversely, in 2025, Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” is earning a staggering $183 million to set a new box office record, unseating Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick.”

For that reason, it feels like a good time to look back at the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend box office openings of all time, dating back to 1996. Now, it’s important to note these are Memorial Day weekend openings not Memorial Day weekend box office champions – “The Day After Tomorrow” pulled in over $85 million when it opened in 2004, but the top film at the box office for the holiday weekend was holdover “Shrek 2.”

Les Dilley, a Welsh production designer and art director who won Academy Awards for their work on “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Star Wars,” died Tuesday from complications of Alzheimer’s. He was 84.

“Les’s legacy lives on in the many iconic films he helped bring to life for over six decades and in his family home he personally built as an homage to his work,” his family said in a statement. “His love for the motion picture business was evident to the very end. When he wasn’t on set, he enjoyed constructing things in his workshop at home, playing ice hockey, and a good cup of tea. In addition to his incredible work ethic, quirky British humour, and love of life, he was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He will be greatly missed.”

Oscar-nominated costume designer Rosanna Norton passed away from bladder cancer on May 7. She was 80.

She was nominated, along with Elois Jenssen, for Best Costumes during the 55th Academy Awards for her work on Tron.

Her genre credits also include Carrie, Phantom of the Paradise, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, The ‘Burbs, RoboCop 2, Casper, Messiah of Evil, and Lemora: A Child’s Tale of the Supernatural.

Other notable work includes Airplane!, The Flintstones, Innerspace, Explorers, Detroit Rock City, Angels in the Outfield, Barb Wire, The Brady Bunch Movie, and Badlands.

While attending UCLA as a painting major, Norton met future husband Bill Norton, who gave her her first costume designing gig on his 1971 film Cisco Pike. She joined the Costume Directors Guild in 1975 and went on to mentor many of its members.

After retiring from the film industry, Norton returned to painting.

Rosanna Norton, the Oscar-nominated costume designer behind “Tron,” “Carrie,” “RoboCop,” and many more, died Wednesday. She was 80 years old.

The renowned designer and lifelong Angeleno died of cancer, TheWrap has learned. Costume designer Salvador Perez, who credited Norton as a longtime friend and mentor, shared the news on Instagram Thursday.

“We lost a legend,” he wrote alongside a photo of himself with Norton.

Norton changed Carrie White (Sissy Spacek)’s iconic prom dress from red in the Stephen King novel to pink in the 1976 film to better contrast the bucket of blood dumped on her that unleashes her telekinetic rage.

In a 2016 interview with Birth Movies Death for the film’s 40th anniversary, Norton explained why she went with a 1930s-inspired look for the dress. “At the time, prom dresses and bridesmaid dresses and things were very fussy.

Rosanna Norton, who was Oscar-nominated for costume design for 1982’s “Tron” and designed Sissy Spacek’s iconic prom dress for “Carrie,” died of cancer May 7 in Los Angeles. She was 80.

Her early costume design credits include Terrence Malick’s “Badlands” and Brian de Palma’s “Carrie” and “Phantom of the Paradise.”

“We had no money,” she recalled in a video interview about “Carrie.” She found many of the prom outfits in a store in the Valley that was going out of business, she said. But she had Carrie’s simple pale pink satin dress custom-made by a seamstress after changing the color from the original red in the book to create a more striking contrast with the blood that is splashed on Spacek.

Brad Silberling's 2009 film "Land of the Lost" was a feature-length spoof of the 1974 NBC adventure series co-created by Sid & Marty Krofft. The Krofft shows of the '70s and '80s were all fantasy programs that typically centered on parallel universes, fun puppets, and wild monster costumes. 

Their "Land of the Lost," which ran for 43 episodes over its three seasons, was the Kroffts' headiest, least comedic series. Created by Ian Deitchman and Kristin Robinson, who also serve as showrunners, It’s Not Like That follows Lori (Hayes), who is freshly divorced with two teens. Malcolm’s (Foley) a minister and recently widowed dad of three. Their families once did everything together, but now Lori and Malcolm must navigate their newly minted singledom, parenthood and the complexities of Malcolm being a modern-day minister. The latest dystopian thriller starring horror icon Devon Sawa is set to release in theaters before going to digital platforms. Mackenzie Donaldson's All the Lost Ones was set to go straight to digital services at first, but Epic Pictures has picked it up for a small theatrical window. The film will now receive a limited release in theaters on April 18, 2025, and four days later — on April 22 — it will be available for digital purchase or rent. This is great news for the relatively small film and also for the film industry at large, as independent features rarely receive theatrical windows — especially in times when streaming has taken such a big role in terms of releasing lesser-known films.

Christina Ricci has been an accomplished actress and has starred in several popular films and series since her big screen debut in Mermaids (1990). But one role she missed out on was that of Mathilda in the classic 1994 film, Léon: The Professional, losing out to Natalie Portman. And in a new interview with the YouTube show, First We Feast (via The Wrap), Ricci reveals the ridiculous reason why: she was "too common and healthy looking."

That may come as a surprise to some, considering one of Ricci's most famous roles was the rather gothic Wednesday Addams in the early 1990s hit film, The Addams Family and its sequel. She explained to her Yellowjackets co-star Melanie Lynskey why she lost out on her "dream role:"

Most filmgoers recognize big cities like Miami, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles in their favorite motion pictures. Sure enough, those locals provide the backdrop to several classic pictures from Michael Bay's "Bad Boys" to "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "King Kong" and Michael Mann's "Heat."  However, another prominent locale exists in the film world, a place you've likely seen more often than not, even if it didn't immediately stand out. We're talking, of course, about the state of Maine.

Uniquely, many stories take place in the Pine Tree State. Its lush scenery and coastal views make for stunning cinematography, while the colder elements provide the necessary bleakness for heavier dramas. Here, family friendly fare like "Casper" and "Pete's Dragon" took flight, while more intense films such as the alligator thriller "Lake Placid" and the Stephen King horror tale "Pet Sematary" found unique ways to scare the bejesus out of audiences.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame gained a new star on Thursday morning when Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Christina Ricci was honored for her decades-long career in film and television. Hollywood Boulevard was flooded with fans of Ricci toting merchandise from her most famous projects, including The Addams Family, Casper, and her current series, Showtime's survival thriller Yellowjackets.

"They do the list of nominees who could get it and the second I saw [my name] I cried," Ricci told Gold Derby following the ceremony. "I don't really understand quite well why it's so meaningful to me, but I think it's such validation and acceptance and an acknowledgment, and it feels really special."

Christina Ricci is recalling what she “dreaded” most on set as a child actress.

The “Yellowjackets” star made her film debut in 1990 at age nine in “Mermaids.” She went on to lead iconic films such as “Sleepy Hollow,” “The Addams Family,” “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” and “Casper” as a teen before continuing her career into adulthood with “Monster,” “Black Snake Moan,” and more.

Ricci, who is now receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, told Variety that growing up in the spotlight came with its downsides, namely being told “what was wrong” with her during camera tests.

“I hated fittings and I hated camera-test days because I knew those were the days when everyone would look at me and talk about what was wrong with me, with my appearance and what they needed to fix,” Ricci said. “‘We can’t ever shoot her from this side.

The cast of “Yellowjackets” is a sprawling one, with different actors portraying the main characters in both the 1996 timeline, when the team’s plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness, and in the present.

If you're a child of the '90s like me, then there's a solid chance you spent many a Halloween cozied up with your candy watching Casper. It doesn't transcend its limitations as a broadly appealing family film, complete with dated references and a cookie-cutter plot. But its attention to the details of production design and visual effects combine with its cheeky sense of humor to make for one of those films that's eager to poke you in the ribs with a good scare or a well-executed joke, often at the same time. One of the best jokes in the film involved some major string-pulling from the film's super producer, Steven Spielberg, who corralled a series of cameos from big names who frankly had no business being in such kid-friendly fare — but that makes the gag all the funnier.

Thanks to his performance as Johnny Lawrence in "The Karate Kid," William "Billy" Zabka's appearance exemplifies the archetype of all 1980s movie bullies. Suppose you close your eyes and think of the type of guy who would pester the charming underdog of an '80s teen movie. In that case, he's probably a tall, beefy blonde whose parents definitely had a photo of Ronald Reagan hanging above the TV in their living room. It's not Zabka's fault that he became the blueprint for this character type, but when looking at the landscape of high school movies from the decade, it certainly seems like every casting director was looking for "a Billy Zabka type." The horror film that kicked off a spine-chilling franchise, Final Destination, will soon be available for streaming.

Starting Jan. 1, 2025, Paramount+ subscribers can experience the 2000 thriller that redefined the supernatural horror genre. Casper the Friendly Ghost made his theatrical debut in I. Sparber's 1945 short "The Friendly Ghost," released by Famous Studios. The gimmick of the short was that a boy-like apparition named Casper, feeling lonely and wanting friends, would causally approach animals and adults to introduce himself only to see them flee in terror. He is, after all, a ghost. Only open-minded children could see that Casper wasn't a threat and befriend him.

The success of "The Friendly Ghost" led to 54 additional Famous Studios Casper shorts that lasted through 1959. Casper also began starring in a series of Harvey Comics in 1951, and the character's mythos expanded greatly. He soon became friends with a witch named Wendy and was bullied by some baddies called the Ghostly Trio. The comics and shorts also spawned multiple TV shows to feature the Friendly Ghost, mostly in the 1960s and 1970s, and his popularity was retained throughout the 1980s through incessant reruns.

A fun piece of trivia: one of J.J. Abrams' first professional gigs was writing the music for Don Dohler's 1982 horror cheapie "Nightbeast." Dohler, as B-movie fans might know, is the creative mind behind "The Alien Factor" and "Galaxy Invader," movies that were filmed mostly in the woods. Abrams has since become one of the preeminent makers of big-budget mainstream blockbusters, so it's fun to picture him as a teen handing over tapes to a hard-working schlockmeister like Dohler.

Abrams stuck with it, though, and eventually sold a film treatment to screenwriter Paul Mazursky when he was still in college. That treatment became Arthur Hiller's 1990 comedy "Taking Care of Business" with Jim Belushi. Abrams continued to rise through the ranks of Tinseltown from there, penning the scripts for films like "Regarding Henry," "Forever Young," and, uh, "Gone Fishin'." On October 28, 2000, kids all across America tuned into the Nickelodeon Snick programming block to watch a new horror movie called "Cry Baby Lane." Directed by Peter Lauer, "Cry Baby Lane" is about two brothers — the feeble Andrew (Jase Blankfort) and massive jerk Carl (Trey Rogers) — who love hearing ghost stories from the undertaker, Mr. Bennett (Frank Langella).

One night, the undertaker tells the story of a local farmer whose wife gave birth to conjoined twins (the movie uses the insensitive term "Siamese twins" because it was the year 2000), with one of the babies being noticeably evil. The farmer kept the twins locked up in an attic and away from the public eye before they eventually got sick and died together.

"Joker: Folie a Deux" may have just proven that even big-budget movies won't always top the box office when they have terrible reviews and little love from fans, but apparently the streaming world is still operating on a different level.
