Admire the Criterion Collection, but can’t afford the thousands of dollars required to purchase all those DVDs? There’s a more elegant solution…just get a Max subscription. Warner Bros and HBO have announced a renewal of their deal with Criterion to keep decades of film classics in one streamable spot. “We are excited to continue to bring the Criterion Collection’s catalog of top-quality films to our audiences,” said Royce Battleman, Executive Vice President, Content Acquisitions, Warner Bros. Before the Resident Evil franchise ended up in the hands of Paul W.S. Anderson, the filmmaker who was developing a cinematic adaptation of the zombie video game series was the one who first brought us the concept of flesh-eating zombies: Night of the Living Dead (and Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead) director George A. Romero. For decades, fans have been pondering what it would have been like if Romero had been able to bring his vision of Resident Evil to the screen – and that’s the subject of the upcoming documentary George A. Romero’s Resident Evil. We’ve been waiting for this one for a while, and now our friends at Bloody Disgusting have learned that it’s set to receive a Digital and On Demand release on January 7th!

One of the great "what if?" questions of the horror genre has always been: What if George Romero made Resident Evil? To think that the creator of Night of the Living Dead could have actually directed the 2002 action horror movie is almost unfathomable at this point, but for a moment it was a very real possibility. Its that story of his unmade film thats set to be explored in the new documentary George A. Romeros Resident Evil.
Per Bloody Disgusting, the new doc directed by Brandon Salisbury will hit all VOD platforms on Jan. 7, 2025, and will look to uncover the truth as to why Romeros vision was never brought to life. Featuring archival footage, newly uncovered documents, and fresh interviews with key personalities, George A. Romeros Resident Evil sounds like a must-see for Romero and horror fans alike. Check out the full synopsis below.

The Zombiemovie genre has enjoyed mainstream popularity for the past 56 years, with its origins dating as far back as 1932. Since then, this horror theme has experienced several waves of popularity, especially since the creation of George A. Romero's Living Dead Universe in 1968. However, certain titles inspired more significant upticks in zombie horror media than others, one of the most notable being the 2010 debut of the milestone zombie TV series The Walking Dead.
The hoards of new zombie movies and TV shows that have followed in the wake of such titles have been unstoppable; while arguably overdone, the undead genre shows no signs of dying off now. Zombie horror owes its popularity to movies like Romero's that avoided common genre tropes and brought something new and thrilling to the table. Whether by playing with the origin of the zombie outbreak, the speed and behavior of the zombies, the setting, or the character types,...

The melt movie, a subcategory of body horror, is a specific flavor of genre film wherein the flesh melts, oozes, and dissolves into goo. These films are best viewed on an empty stomach.
On that note, this week brings the release of Ryan Kruger‘s Street Trash, a spiritual sequel to the 1987 melt movie cult classic that boasts no shortage of gruesome, practical effects-driven meltdowns. Flesh dissolves in vibrant but gooey fashion, inspiring this week’s streaming picks.

The makers of 28 Days Later have always resisted describing the film as a zombie movie, but come on it has all the defining hallmarks of a zombie movie. Ive always been a huge fan of the zombie genre; I grew up obsessed with The Walking Dead, Ive watched George A. Romeros classic Dead movies over and over, and Ive replayed The Last of Us games dozens of times. Danny Boyle and co.s resistance to call 28 Days Later a zombie movie smacks of snobbish elitism, like theyre embarrassed to be associated with such a lowbrow genre.
It reminds me of how the writers of The Penguin changed Oswald Cobblepots name to Oz Cobb to shy away from their comic book source material. Boyle is currently working on a long-overdue sequel to 28 Days Later called 28 Years Later. According to a casting call, theyre looking for marathon runners,...

In an undeniably great year for horror, the most unsettling scene from one of the more popular series featured a man offering his neighbor a sandwich. Granted, that man was cannibalistic serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, his neighbor the woman who got him evicted, and the sandwich possibly contained human flesh, but the menace and uncertainty of the exchange — and the show at large — captured the horrified attention of millions of viewers. Ryan Murphy’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, starring Evan Peters, is one of Netflix’s most-watched (and...

While we’ve had many seasons and spinoffs for The Walking Dead, it’s never been definitely answered how the zombie virus happened in the first place. Even the 15 years or so of the original comic book series never gave fans a specific reason for the virus, meaning that there remain a lot of unresolved questions over the history of the Walking Dead universe. However, creator Robert Kirkman has recently provided an explanation for it. Well, sort of, anyway.
When asked on Twitter what created the walkers in the series, Kirkman simply remarked that the virus began with a “space spore.” This comment is a likely reference to the role of space radiation in the undead outbreak in George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, one of the main sources of inspiration for The Walking Dead and the zombie genre as a whole. Kirkman’s comment must be...

A Day of the Dead TV show is coming soon. SyFy has handed out a straight-to-series order for a TV show based on the classic from the late George A. Romero, master of the zombie genre. The first season will consist of 10 episodes and will center on a group of six strangers struggling to survive the first 24 hours of a zombie invasion. This marks the first time that the movie has been adapted into a series.
SyFy has partnered with Cartel Entertainment for the show. Cartel also produces Shudder's Creepshow series, which is another adaptation of a George A. Romero classic. The first season was received quite well, which could bode well for Day of the Dead. Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas are set to write the show, in addition to serving as showrunners. Far from a curse, Tobe Hooper's tiny budget made The Texas Chainsaw Massacre a timeless horror classic...
In the summer of 1973, the cast and crew of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre were suffering through what was, by most accounts, a thoroughly miserable shoot. The heat and humidity were almost unbearable; the interior location where much of the film's third act took place, an old farmhouse outside Round Rock, was dressed with animal bones and blood, which had begun to stink in the broiling Texas air. The stench was so bad that some crewmembers were throwing up outside between takes.

2016 was chock-full of big blockbuster releases, many of which either failed to make a sizable profit or were incredibly divisive among audiences. But out of the ashes rose a beautiful flower: the indie film. Yes, independent movies had a wonderful year, some even breaking per-theater records and making their way onto my favorites of 2016 list, which also includes a Denis Villeneuve film, a comic book series, collectibles, an excellent comprehensive horror documentary, and more.
Arrival: Denis Villeneuve's Arrival is a beautiful take on language and how communication (or the lack of proper communication) can either doom or ensure our survival as human beings on this planet. The way Villeneuve tells a story is the perfect fit for a film like Arrival because its focus is small but the ideas are big, much like his previous works, Enemy, Sicario, and Prisoners.

Creepy clowns are a mainstay of the horror genre and we are about to be treated to a brand new one to haunt your nightmares in the near future. Recognizing that it’s more than likely an unpopular opinion, I need to come clean and confess that I prefer Tobe Hooper’s 1986 sequel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, to its predecessor, which I’m also quick to point out is an unparalleled masterpiece of the genre. This has everything to do with personal taste. Tobe Hooper is one of my favorite filmmakers of all-time, and while I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen his 1974 classic, I probably revisit Part 2 every year. It’s one of my very favorite horror movies.
The third film in a trilogy Hooper made for Cannon Films in the 1980s (the other two being the brilliantly bonkers Lifeforce and Hooper’s remake of Invaders From Mars, released just a couple of months before TCM2 in ’86), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 was the movie the director had to...

Horror veteran Tony Todd will voice the villainous Zoom in season 2 of The Flash. Also, a new poster teases Jay Garrick...
The Flash season 2 looks certain to expand the show's scale - the writers are adding a new primary antagonist called Zoom, possible sidekick Wally West and alternate-universe Flash Jay Garrick. Today, there's been news about two of those three things.
Firstly, we learned that horror movie veteran Tony Todd (pictured) will voice Zoom. Todd is perhaps best known for the Candyman films, and his lead role in Night Of The Living Dead.

The moors of Yorkshire turned red with blood this weekend as the first ever HorrorCon took place at the Magna Science Adventure Centre this weekend in Rotherham.

1981 was an amazing year for horror. An American Werewolf in London. The Beyond. The Evil Dead. The Funhouse. The Howling. The list goes on and on. However, one that always seems to fall through the cracks of time and memory is Dead & Buried.
Released in May 1981, Dead & Buried did not set any box office records. This is due to the fact that it is very hard to categorize. Is it a slasher ala Friday the 13th Part 2? No, but there are some gruesome and realistic deaths courtesy of late effects whiz Stan Winston. Is it a monster movie like The Howling? Not exactly, but the movie involves transformations (of a sort). Is there a mystery to solve? Definitely, and this is what drives the story forward and through the disparate elements at play.
60’s and 70’s TV survivor James Farentino stars as Dan Gillis, Sheriff of the seaside town of Potter’s Bluff.

Tom Towles may be best known for his role as Otis in Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer but the mans resume stretches far beyond that one glimmer. In fact Tom was a damn dedicated player in the game of horror. The prolific actor sports more than 60 projects on his ledger (with plenty of television work included) and a wealth of standout pictures can be found. Towles appeared in a number of Rob Zombie films including Halloween The Devils Rejects and House of 1000 Corpses. He also tackled roles in The Prophecy II Night of the Living Dead and Home Sick. He was passionate boasted amazing on screen presence and we fans appreciated that.

“Otis, plug it in!”
It’s been a tough week for horror fans. First Robert Z’Dar passed away, and now Tom Towles. The actor would have a cult following if he had co-starred in nothing else but Henry Portrait Of A Serial Killer in 1986. His Otis was based on Ottis Toole, the vile drifter who, along with Henry Lee Lucas (played in the film by Michael Rooker), left a trail of bodies in their wake. Towles was scary-good as Otis, and went on to co=star in a number of cult horror films including Tom Savini’s Night Of The Living Dead remake, The Borrower, and Fortress. Towles became a regular for director Rob Zombie with roles in House Of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’S Rejects, and Halloween. He had not appeared in a film since 2008, but had become a staple on the horror movie convention circuit. He died...

[Editors Note: Given that we've already reviewed the Vinegar Syndrome release of Graduation Day and both discs are virtually identical bar the extras, we thought we'd review the Major difference between the two Blu-ray releases - the bonus feature on the UK disc, the documentary Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed]
It’s fair to say I’m a sucker for scream queen “documentaries”. Be they the T&A filled features such as Scream Queen Hollywood Hot Tub Party, more amateur-hour productions such as Donald Farmer’s shot-on-video Invasion of the Scream Queens, or the awesome scream queen interviews that featured in Stephen King’s World of Horror – if it features an interview with a scream queen then I’m there. I’m also a fan of the documentaries and Blu-ray extras produced by High Rising Productions – including their previously released slasher movie documentary: Slice and Dice: The Slasher Movie Forever.
Put the two together and… I’m in filmic heaven!
Directed by UK-horror scene stalwart Calum Waddell and hosted by scream queen Debbie Rochon (Terror Firmer, Tromeo and Juliet) Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed features, in a change of pace for horror documentaries, especially those focusing on females in the genre,...

Released in 1981, Graduation Day has become a favourite of slasher movie fans thanks to its plasma-spurting set pieces, maniacal mystery-killer storyline and a cast of cult celebrities that includes Christopher George (City of the Living Dead), Vanna White (Wheel of Fortune) and the perennially topless Scream Queen Linnea Quigley. Now set for a Blu-ray release, with a stunning print restored and re-mastered from a colourful 4k scan, from the folks at 88 Films, Graduation Day will arrive in the UK with an array of newly created special features from High Rising Productions including a new feature length documentary entitled Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed.

Picking up where the big studios have been leaving off, home video label Twilight Time has for the last few years been releasing some pretty damn awesome horror flicks on Blu-ray, including the original Fright Night and Tom Savini's remake of Night of the Living Dead.
Joining them next is the 1988 version of The Blob, headed our way just in time for Halloween! As the company just revealed, October 14th will mark the Blu-ray release of The Blob.
Joining it on Blu will be a handful of other horror films, including Audrey Rose (1977), The Believers (1987), Man Hunt (1941), Under Fire (1983), and The Vanishing (1993).
Typical for Twilight Time, all of the releases will be limited with The Blob being cut off at 5,000 copies and the others limited to only 3,000.
Directed by Chuck Russell, The Blob is one of the better horror remakes we've yet seen, centering on a strange pink life...

Hello, and welcome to The Best Of Number Two here at The Liberal Dead. We haven’t done any kind of theme for a long time, so I thought I would reach out to some some talented people from other sites, and see if we can put something together. I decided it would be a theme about the best second films in a franchise/series. Expect discussion about Metamorhosis: The Alien Factor, The Devil’s Rejects, C.H.U.D. II, Blade II, Sleepaway Camp II, Amityville 2, Island of the Fishmen, The Dark Knight, Final Destination 2, House II and more.
