Across the River and Into the Trees (Paula Ortiz)
Hemingway’s work across novels and short stories has been adapted for film countless times over, yet Across the River and Into the Trees has never properly been rendered onscreen. Until now. Written by Peter Flannery and directed by Paula Ortiz, here is a handsome film that is decidedly modest in its endeavor. The best thing going for it is Liev Schreiber as Colonel Richard Cantwell, the lead of the picture. Schreiber is one of those actors who has somehow always been underrated, despite being capable of playing nearly any kind of part. A kind boyfriend thrust into an impossible familial situation (The Daytrippers)? Check. Tough-but-fractured fixer living on the edge (Ray Donovan)? Check.

With Janus possessing the much-needed restorations, Catherine Breillat is getting her biggest-ever spotlight in November’s Criterion Channel series spanning 1976’s A Real Young Girl to 2004’s Anatomy of Hell––just one of numerous retrospectives arriving next month. They’re also spotlighting Ida Lupino, directorial efforts of John Turturro (who also gets an “Adventures In Moviegoing”), the Coen brothers, and Jacques Audiard.
In a slightly more macroscopic view, Columbia Noir and a new edition of “Queersighting” ring in Noirvember. Gregg Araki’s Teen Apocalypse trilogy and Miller’s Crossing get Criterion Editions, while restorations of David Bowie-starrer The Linguini Incident, Med Hondo’s West Indies, and Dennis Hopper’s Out of the Blue make streaming debuts; and Kevin Jerome Everson’s Tonsler Park arrives just in time for another grim election day.

Like some of her most memorable films, including 36 Fillette, Romance, Sex is Comedy and Anatomy of Hell, French writer-director Catherine Breillat’s new feature, Last Summer (L’Été dernier), dangerously straddles borders between unnerving drama, dark comedy and erotic exploitation — which is precisely the place the director wants to be.
On the surface, the plot seems to come right out of a softcore stepmom flick, following a successful lawyer, Anne (Léa Drucker), having an illicit affair with her stepson, Théo (Samuel Kircher), a rebellious 17-year-old who looks like a camera stand-in for Timothée Chalamet. But while the film might follow that template at first blush, including a handful of rather direct sex scenes, Breillat is after something other than mere Skinemax fodder, probing the depths of desire among a bourgeoisie constrained to live out dull, cold existences, and the manipulation that can happen between two lovers with a significant age gap.

It began in the son’s room, when the father was away on business. L’enfant thought it was l’amour, but for her, 30-odd years his senior, the sex, lies and audiotape were a mistake. Wild at heart, she’d yielded to the taste of … oh, never mind. Competing for the Palme d’Or at Cannes, Catherine Breillat’s “Last Summer” echoes films that have come before — most notably, 2019 Danish drama “Queen of Hearts,” on which it’s based — but it proves most daring in the ways the film departs from its more conventionally moralistic source, and especially in Breillat’s refusal to call either party a parasite.
Yes, the affair between a lawyer and her 17-year-old stepson is a betrayal — of her marriage, of her parental responsibilities, of everything she stands for as an attorney — but that’s nothing compared with how the 50-ish woman deals with it...

The upcoming CBS pilot Matlock has cast East New York star Skye P. Marshall in a lead role opposite Kathy Bates for a modern take on the classic legal drama. According to Deadline, Marshall will play Olympia, a formidable attorney with a thirst for justice and a key rainmaker at New York’s most prestigious law firm. As she juggles her work and home life, Olympia remains laser-focused and not easily impressed, which becomes apparent when she’s tasked with overseeing a third junior associate. The revival, which comes from Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman and NCIS: Los Angeles star Eric Christian Olsen, revolves around Madeline Matlock (Bates), a brilliant septuagenarian who rejoins the world of law where she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases and expose corruption from within. Matlock, created by Dean Hargrove, originally premiered in 1986 on NBC and aired for nine seasons,...

Not all of the original Virgin River book storylines made it to the Netflix show, but one deleted Lizzie storyline might improve Lizzie and Connie’s relationship in the show. Based on Robyn Carr’s romance novels of the same name, Netflix’s Virgin River follows Mel Monroe, a nurse practitioner who moves to the small town of Virgin River for a new start after the death of her husband. As a nurse practitioner, Mel has many interactions with the townsfolk of Virgin River, although the town’s exploits are likely beyond what Mel expected when she took the job.
Virgin River has an ever-changing and expanding cast of characters. In Virgin River season 2, 19-year-old Lizzie, the niece of Connie, arrives to stay in the titular town. Though Lizzie remains a featured character in the subsequent seasons of Netflix’s Virgin River, she and Connie often appear to be at odds with each other,...

Matlock is getting a brand-new reboot at CBS, with Kathy Bates set for the gender-swapped lead role. The original Matlock originally ran on NBC from 1986 to 1992 before moving to ABC until it went off the air in 1995, overall running for a total of 193 episodes plus a feature-length pilot. The series followed Andy Griffith as Ben Matlock, a skilled attorney who hides his cutthroat nature behind a folksy exterior.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman is developing a reboot of Matlock that has received a pilot order. The series will star Bates in the Griffith role, with the character now renamed Madeline Matlock. The premise will be similar, with Matlock - a former Da who is now in her 70s - un-retiring and coming to a prestigious law firm where she conquers a variety of cases using her supposed guilelessness to her advantage.

CBS is adding two famed attorneys to its roster.
Matlock, one of television’s most iconic crime dramas, is getting a new life at CBS. The Paramount Global-backed broadcast network has handed out a pilot order for a new take on the former defense attorney formerly played by Andy Griffith. Kathy Bates will take on the role of Madeline Matlock.
Additionally, The Good Wife/The Good Fight creators Robert and Michelle King are returning to CBS with the third series in the franchise, Elsbeth, with star Carrie Preston set to reprise her role in the drama that has also received a pilot order at the broadcast network. These are the first two drama pilot orders for CBS and are being eyed for the 2023-24 broadcast season.
Additionally, CBS is looking toward the 2024-25 broadcast season with dramas The Pact (which stems from its overall deal with the NAACP) and Sherlock Holmes entry Watson.

Before his Hollywood career as a screenwriter and CEO of the Latino Film Institute, Rafael Agustin was a Southern California teenager just trying to get his driver’s license.
It wasn’t that he couldn’t drive; rather, it turned out that he wasn’t legally permitted to. Although Agustin had clear and fond memories of an early childhood in his native Ecuador before immigrating to Los Angeles with his parents, he had had no idea that the three had been living without papers ever since. That meant no driving, no four-year university and no international travel — although, as the former Jane the Virgin writer details in his recent memoir, that didn’t stop him from doing two of those things well before he secured his green card and, eventually, citizenship.

The newest season of Virgin River just dropped on July 20th, and audiences have been given more drama, romance, and intrigue to keep them loving the show. The scenery included is beautiful and makes one want to pack up and move to a cabin in the middle of nowhere, but what's even more attractive is the feeling of belonging and community Virgin River does so well.
Despite Mel just moving to Virgin River a couple of months back, she's already made an enviable number of friends, or at the very least people who are willing to help her with anything she needs. People in smaller communities are just wired differently, and this show portrays that to perfection.

Picturestart has acquired the rights to the Mary H.K. Choi novel “Yolk” to adapt as a television series, Variety has learned exclusively.
“Yolk” is about two twenty-something Korean sisters in New York — Jayne and June. One has cancer, the other has health insurance, so they swap identities based on the oldest gag in the racism book: All Look Same. By “swap,” June means stealing her little sister’s identity without her knowing because they’re long estranged. And when Jayne finds out, she extorts her big sister for a room in her baller Manhattan apartment. Tit for tat. Of course, deep down they need each other, though they’d sooner die than admit this. And now June might really die, especially if Jayne flunks out of fashion school and loses “their” health insurance. As they struggle to understand each other, the one thing they can agree on? The romantic entanglements of Virgin River are set to continue as Netflix has renewed the series for a fourth and fifth season, TV Insider can confirm. The show has seen huge popularity on Netflix, with the third season landing on the streamer’s Top 10 list in 81 countries within a month following its July 2021 release. It even ended the run of the soon-to-revived Manifest, which had spent four consecutive weeks at the No. 1 spot. Based on the Virgin River novels by Robyn Carr, the drama was adapted for television by Sue Tenney and premiered on Netflix in December 2019. The series stars Alexandra Breckenridge as Mel Monroe, a nurse practitioner and midwife who moves from Los Angeles to the remote Northern California town of Virgin River. In addition to Breckenridge, the show features Martin Henderson as Mel’s love interest Jack Sheridan, Colin Lawrence as Preacher Middleton, Lauren Hammersley as Charmaine Roberts,...

All American, which wound down its linear season on the CW just before hitting Netflix in July, finished No. 2 for the week, with 1.16 billion minutes of viewing of its 51 episodes.
Nielsen measures only viewing via a TV screen, meaning mobile viewing — a major source for young-skewing shows — is not counted. It tracks only Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and Disney+. For the second consecutive week, all of the top 10 titles are on Netflix.

The last few minutes of Virgin River‘s third season are, quite frankly, insane.
Following a brief-yet-still-too-long separation, Mel and Jack celebrate their rekindled romance with an invigorating mountain hike, unaware that they’re both concealing explosive secrets from one another. Jack throws his grenade first, getting down on one knee and asking Mel to marry him, which prompts her to retaliate in kind: “I’m pregnant,” she tells him. “And I don’t know if you’re the father.” Boom. No survivors.

Almost two years (!) after the Season 4 finale of Animal Kingdom (refresh your memory here), the criminally addictive TNT drama came back with a vengeance Sunday night, teeing up a Season 5 premiere that left three characters dead and ushered in what might just be a whole new Pope. Are there actual Lumberjack Games somewhere? Because they look like So much fun!
It's not a season of Virgin River unless they give us one of those fun town events that make you want to pack all of your belongings and hightail it to the nearest scenic small town that can deliver anything close to it.
The Lumberjack Games of Virgin River Season 3 Episode 6 were top-tier small town goodness.
Finally, a girl has an excuse to wear all her finest flannel and best boots. And there are plenty of both around these parts.
It's never a dull moment at one of these events, so naturally, it led to Sheridan sibling tension, Mel and Jack having some more relationship challenges and bickering, Doc worrying about his vision, and Lilly's cancer news spreading around town.
And that's only a handful of things that the hour tackled.

Stacie and Charmaine would probably be the best of friends. They're both brilliant at effing with Mel and Jack's heads, and I hate them for it.
Seriously, when will Mel and Jack have a moment of bliss without all of Virgin River's colorful characters and issues coming to marsh their mellow?
But if Virgin River Season 3 Episode 3 didn't do anything, it introduced us to some new characters, brought some drama, sadness, and a new 'ship.
So let's get it out of the way. Maybe this reviewer jumped the gun on hating Brady and Brie. Sure, it'll be hell to pay when Jack finds out about this, but damn it if the chemistry between Brady and Brie isn't enticing.
Brie is adamant about it not going anywhere serious. But she's into him more than she's willing to verbalize, and if that morning after scene didn't tell us anything, it suggested that Brady is genuinely smitten.

While being lauded by critics’ bodies for visual effects, film editing and original score, Universal’s “The Invisible Man” continues the industry’s trend of snubbing horror films and performances. It left empty-handed when the Golden Globes and SAG Awards released their nominations; its only other chances remain at the Oscars in a list of 15 shortlist nominees for Best Original Score and at the Critics Choice Awards for Best Visual Effects. Elisabeth Moss’ searing absence follows after Lupita Nyong’o in “Us,” Toni Collette in “Hereditary” and many others including the entire production of “The Shining.” The main exception to this rule was when “The Silence of the Lambs,” which celebrated its 30th anniversary on Valentine’s Day, won all Big Five awards at the 1992 Oscars.

If you watched Virgin River Season 2, there's a good chance you have many thoughts about Charmaine.
The character has proven to be controversial with fans of Mel and Jack, the pair at the wheel of the most complicated relationship on the series.
While they haven't officially gotten together, the sparks have been flying ever since Mel first arrived in Virgin River.
Unfortunately, Charmaine is stuck in the middle, having revealed her pregnancy with Jack's child, a development that has divided fans.
Lauren Hammersley, who plays Charmaine, spoke out about the role to TV Line and said that while fans voice their disdain for her character, they "still like me, and they think I play her well."
However, there are "some people who don't recognize that the character is not the actor," leading to some "weird interactions," the actress noted.

The CW's critically acclaimed telenovela concluded its fifth season in 2019, rounding out the series with 100 episodes. Over its five years on air, the cast of well-rounded characters evolved significantly, losing some familiar faces and gaining new ones. However, at the heart of the story remain the three Villaneuva women: Jane, Xiomara, and Alba.

Virgin River ended the run of The Crown in the top spot in Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings, racking up almost 1.8 billion minutes of viewing from November 30 to December 6.
The show’s 10-episode second season debuted in the latter weeks of 2020 and has risen steadily through the ranks. (See the full top 10 below.)
Netflix said in December it had renewed the romantic drama for a third season, with Zibby Allen and Stacey Farber joining the cast. The series is based on the bestselling Harlequin book series by Robyn Carr. It centers on a nurse practitioner played by Alexandra Breckenridge, who moves to the remote California town of Virgin River and finds that life there isn’t as simple as she expected.
The Crown, whose fourth season had a splashy debut in November, is still piling up significant viewing, with almost 1.5 billion total minutes of viewing. Nielsen’s streaming rankings — which come with a lengthy delay,...

Netflix's new series Dash & Lily is a heartfelt adaptation of David Levithan and Rachel Cohn's young-adult book series, but it also features a wonderful idea for a Pixar movie. The series, which premiered on Nov. 10, follows two teens named Dash and Lily living in NYC who form a special bond by communicating through a red notebook. As the two correspond back and forth, Lily makes a few references to a Pixar movie named Collation, which is about a stapler and a piece of paper that fall in love. While the movie pops up multiple times throughout the season, it's actually completely made up for the series.
"There was so much Collation stuff that got cut for time," executive producer Joe Tracz told TVLine. "Our favorite writers' room parlor game was figuring out which celebrities would voice which office supplies. 'What punny catchphrases do they all have?' At one point,...

Catherine Breillat is no stranger to controversy. If the French novelist and director has spent a career confronting censorship and social taboos, that has not prevented her from developing a reputation as one of the world’s most iconoclastic and widely acclaimed authorial voices.
From her 1976 directorial debut, “A Real Young Girl,” through to 2013’s “Abuse of Weakness,” Breillat has continually sought to examine and reframe conventional depictions of femininity, more often than not twisting them towards provocative ends. This year she heads the Locarno Film Festival jury – which marks a fitting choice for both a festival finding new footing under the leadership of artistic director Lili Hinstin, and for a larger film culture still wrestling with many of the questions Breillat has regularly explored.
Variety spoke with this year’s jury president shortly before she packed her bags for Locarno. [Note: This conversation has been edited for clarity and length.]

Gerwig’s Saoirse Ronan-starring coming-of-age tale is an instant classic, and one that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone who has enjoyed Gerwig’s charming work as a screenwriter in recent years, bolstered by her ear for dialogue and her love of complicated and complex leading ladies.

How do you employ this concept into your films, and does it, in fact, have anything to do with the way you wish to break away from the story?

Hovering around the twenty-one to twenty-four feature film mark with at least a quarter of those films belonging to first time filmmakers, the Quinzaine des Realisateurs (a.k.a Directors’ Fortnight) has in the past couple of years, counted on a healthy supply of French, Spanish and Belgium produced film items, and has been geared towards the offbeat genre items as with last year’s edition curated by Edouard Waintrop and co. To be unveiled on the 22nd, as we attempted with our Critics’ Week predix, Blake Williams, Nicholas Bell and I (Eric Lavallee) are thinking out loud and hedging our bets on what the section might look like or what the programmers might be looking at for 2014. The trend these days is to have controllers be a seamless part of the game playing experience, to the point that they're virtually transparent. The Kinect and other purely motion based solutions is perhaps the best, most extreme example of this increasingly popular train of thought.
So thank goodness that some folks out there are willing to go against the norm, and create controllers that both bold and absurd. Like the "Doom Piano", which as the name implies, is a piano that's been modified to play "Doom".
The following, which Gamasutra was the very first to report on such a bizarre yet wonderful interface, was presented at the Virgin Media Game Space in London. It's the lovechild of organizer David Hayward, developer Sos Sosowski, Ricky Haggett of Honeyslug and George Buckenham of Die Gute Fabrik:

We doubt that it’ll be as populated as Sundance was, but if this year’s Cannes Film Festival should be remembered for anything, it will surely be noted as one of the most female friendly lineups in years, surpassing even that glorious 2009 program. Since that year, however, a female presence has been largely absent, particularly from the main competition. Announced almost to prophesize this year’s lineup was the earlier briefing that director Jane Campion, who will be serving as president of this year’s Cinefondation and the short film jury at the festival, will also be awarded the Carrosse d’Or, to be presented during the opening ceremony of the 45th Directors’ Fortnight. Campion is still the only woman to win the coveted Palme D’or (The Piano, 1993), and the third to claim the Carrosse d’Or since 2002 (Agnes Varda was the first to receive it back in...
