One of the most anticipated fantasy projects in the pipeline is Netflix's take on The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis' classic fantasy series. There are seven Narnia books in all, and while Netflix hasn't officially announced how the series will be adapted, all signs point to the streamer making one movie per book, with the first to start filming this summer for a 2026 release.
But which book will Netflix and director Greta Gerwig adapt first? Again, while nothing's been confirmed, there's a large amount of evidence pointing to it being The Magician's Nephew, which might be a bad idea.
Chronologically the first book in the Chronicles, The Magician's Nephew was actually published sixth in, as a prequel that shows the creation of Narnia; it's roughly analogous to the book of Genesis in the Bible, in keeping with the Christian themes of the series. The first Narnia book published,...

If Charli Xcx joins the cast of Greta Gerwig’s Narnia movie, the Pevensie family could find a pile of panties in their wardrobe. According to Deadline, Gerwig is eyeing the Grammy-winning artist for her upcoming film based on The Chronicles of Narnia on Netflix. The outlet says Charli Xcx is in the running for a key role, though details remain a mystery.
Whispers about Charli Xcx possibly joining the Narnia cast arrive after hearing she’ll co-headline Saturday’s portion of this year’s Glastonbury Festival alongside Neil Young and Chrome Hearts, Doechii, Deftones, Beth Gibbons, Amyl and the Sniffers, Beabadoobee, Caribou, and many more. While Charli Xcx’s potential Narnia role remains unknown, Deadline suggests she could play Jadis, The White Witch.

Just as Barbie was getting great buzz, it was announced that Greta Gerwig would be helming an adaptation of The Chronicle of Narnia for Netflix. The streamer has been eyeing this epic adaptation to be one of their releases for Christmas in 2026. There has been talk that Gerwig would naturally be hoping for her new film to have a theatrical release. Perhaps it was when Barbie became the juggernaut hit of 2023 that influenced their decision, but Netflix is now giving Gerwig what she wished for. Sort of.
According to Deadline, Netflix is now set to release Gerwig’s Narnia adaptation in IMAX globally for Thanksgiving on November 26, 2026. However, the movie would be released in a limited two-week window before ultimately streaming on the platform on Christmas Day. This plan is similar to when Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was given a short theater run before streaming...

The characters in The Chronicles of Narnia got their start in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but what happens at the end of their stories? The beloved book series by author C.S. Lewis has an answer. While Disney adapted three of the Narnia books to the screen, the remaining four within the series have been left untold. Hopefully, future adaptations will change this, and the Pevensies and other primary Narnia characters can finally have their full story told.
Barbie director Greta Gerwig has a new Chronicles of Narnia movie series on the way, and it's hoped that this will ultimately lead to the full story being brought to the screen. Lewis' final Narnia book, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Last Battle, details the end of Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy's adventures, as well as those of Aslan, the Professor, and Eustace Scrubb. Warning! Spoilers ahead for the final book in The Chronicles of Narnia series, The Last Battle
The Chronicles of Narnia novels are a seminal work of children's fantasy by C.S. Lewis, and the Pevensie children play a huge role throughout the story. First described in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the Pevensies introduce the audience to Narnia, and it's their influence and legacy that links the different installments together. Though the later books don't touch upon the four central children as much, they do reappear in the final novel, The Last Battle. However, when they return, Susan Pevensie, the oldest girl, doesn't have the same ending as everyone else.
There's been speculation about how the Narnia books will be brought to life in Greta Gerwig's upcoming adaptation of the novels. While the development and characterization of all the Pevensies is vitally important, Gerwig's Narnia adaptation must bring justice to Susan Pevensie,...

More Chronicles of Narnia movies are on the way, and this could open the door to future adaptations that carefully break C.S. Lewis' biggest rule for this fantasy world. Lewis' novels have been loved for generations, and many have been adapted to the screen several times over. Typically, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is the first to be considered for an adaptation, and Greta Gerwig's upcoming movie series is sure to include this story as well. However, it might be interesting if future Narnia movies forged a path all their own.
Gerwig's The Chronicles of Narnia movies are expected to be faithful to Lewis' books, though it's still unclear precisely how the Barbie director will approach these projects. Greta Gerwig has been confirmed to be directing the first two movies in Netflix's upcoming reboot of The Chronicles of Narnia franchise. However, not much is known about what the director and studio intend to do with the many avenues and opportunities that the project can take advantage of. There have been rumors that the films will take place in chronological order rather than release order, which would be a significant divergence from the format of the original Disney movies. However, a big change like this could be the element Netflix needs for the project to stand apart.
While nothing is confirmed, Jason Isaacs has hinted that Gerwig's Narnia movie might be a prequel. This would mean that the first installment in the upcoming Narnia franchise would have to adapt The Magician's Nephew. Casting Netflix's upcoming take on The Chronicles of Narnia will be a tall order, as many longtime fans and critics have strong opinions about who should portray the beloved characters. One actress who was frequently discussed in fan-casting conversations was Saoirse Ronan, who has worked with the director Greta Gerwig many times before. Though Ronan has denied rumors of her being cast in Narnia in the past, there's always potential that this could change (via Deadline). However, it's certain that Ronan could not portray Susan Pevensie, the role she's been fan-cast as.
Greta Gerwig's Narnia remake must bring justice to Susan, one of the most underdeveloped of the Pevensie children. Ronan is often mentioned within the Susan casting discussion because her fair features and longtime partnership with Gerwig make her an obvious choice. However, Ronan has aged out of this role, and it's well-known that adults aren't welcome in Narnia.

Back in July of 2023, it was announced that Barbie director Greta Gerwig had been hired to write and direct at least two Chronicles of Narnia films for the Netflix streaming service. We haven’t heard any details on this project, we don’t even know for sure which book(s) Gerwig has chosen to bring to the screen, but during an interview with Deadline, producer Amy Pascal said (with thanks to Total Film for the transcription) that Gerwig has a “very new take on Narnia. It’s all about rock ‘n’ roll.” Meanwhile, actor Jason Isaacs is spreading the rumor that the first Narnia book that Gerwig is adapting is the prequel The Magician’s Nephew!
While listing his favorite books, Isaacs told The Week, “I loved all the Narnia books as a kid. When Peter was told he wouldn’t be coming back, I understood something devastating about mortality.

Lewis in the 1950s, is an enduring classic for a reason. However, some of the older themes and darker elements make it difficult to adapt to the screen. Greta Gerwig is set to direct the first two movies in the upcoming adaptation for Netflix, but the first film iterations from Disney ran into thematic problems in the early 2000s. While Lewis kept his plot developments consistent and adhered to the rules he created for Narnia, this doesn't mean that every choice will connect with modern audiences.

The last attempt we had at a series of The Chronicles of Narnia movies ended all the way back in 2010 with only three films completed, leaving four whole books untouched. Now, Greta Gerwig is at the helm of a new Narnia film series with a bold release strategy, with Netflix rumored to be in pursuit of an IMAX exclusive release. However, while Netflix's promises to be a more all-encompassing version of the source material, there is at least one positive to Disney's version remaining unfinished.
With screen adaptations typically adapting about half the literary series, there are thousands of questions about Narnia and how to faithfully bring this perennial children's fantasy series to life. The previous Narnia films stopped too early to answer some of these, particularly the issue of how to handle the final book in the series, which catapults Narnia from a whimsical fantasy to a profound allegory.

C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia series includes seven books. Though The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe is the most popular, the series has many wonderful sequels. Some are standalone adventures. Some expand on the world of Narnia beyond its borders. Some dive into Narnia's history, and some tell a dark story.
Each of The Chronicles of Narnia books is distinctly different, and that's the charm of Lewis' book series. While many may enjoy The Last Battle due to its grimmer tone and close resemblance to people in the real world, others may enjoy the more adventure-centered books in the series. Not all books feature the four Pevensies siblings; but the good thing is, Lewis also introduces more fascinating characters along the way.
The Last Battle Is the Darkest in the Series
The reception of the author's last offering in the Chronicles of Narnia series varies largely.

C.S. Lewis' seminal children's book series, The Chronicles of Narnia, has been highly influential in the way young people's fantasy literature has developed. One of the key features of Lewis' universe is that when the Pevensie children get older, they can't return to Narnia. In the books, Aslan is the voice of reason and imparts his wisdom and many of the rules of Narnia to the children. One of these is that Peter and Susan, the oldest Pevensie children, won't be able to come back after the events of Prince Caspian, but it's never explicitly stated why.
The Narnia reboot will struggle to fix problems from the books, and the open-ended questions and weaker world-building are some of the biggest issues with the novels. It will be interesting to see how Greta Gerwig handles mysteries like why adults aren't allowed in Narnia and if the movies will explicitly state why.

The Chronicles of Narnia books are childhood classics for many, but some of them are more deserving of adaptations than others. Following the confirmation that Greta Gerwigs Narnia reboot is officially in the works, its worth considering which of the novels need translations to the silver screen. The Chronicles of Narnia book series is by author C. S. Lewis and consists of seven titles, all of which add and develop the titular fantasy world and its characters.
Of course, there are several problems with the Chronicles of Narnia that the upcoming movies need to fix. The novels are all products of their time, but at their core, they are all heartwarming stories set in a fantastical universe that readers consistently fall in love with time and time again. While Disneys movies, which start with 2005s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, are still popular, some Narnia books still dont have a film adaptation.

Greta Gerwig will helm the upcoming adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia, and the classic fantasy series will get the same treatment as the director's other projects. A hallmark of Gerwig's work is how character-driven her narratives are, and this can fix some of the underdeveloped individuals and storylines in the original books. Written by C.S. Lewis, the Narnia novels are best known for following the adventures of the Pevensie children. However, Lewis' later installments expand the world of Narnia and touch upon exciting new heroes and villains. The White Witch isn't the series' only terrifying antagonist.
There are harsh realities of reading The Chronicles of Narnia series today, but many are fixable issues that will allow Gerwig to take creative liberties with her adaptation. It’s a moment emblematic of Frédéric Jardin’s film; it makes little practical sense, but is packed with arresting images and proceeds with something close to the dream logic of Luc Besson’s debut The Last Battle, and the great comic-book artist Moebius.
Ben is on a Caribbean family cruise with his revoltingly-in-love parents, Julia (Émilie Dequenne) and Tom (Andreas Pietschmann), and his just-plain-revolting older sister, Cassie (Lisa Delamar). After nervy whales graze their yacht, satellites fall burning through the atmosphere and a cataclysm begins, they awake to find their boat stranded on top of a promontory in an infinite desert. Go-getter dad Tom, who likes solutions, quickly...

C.S. Lewis' beloved children's fantasy series The Chronicles of Narnia has never received a movie adaptation that's done the story justice, but Greta Gerwig might be able to change this. The Barbie and Little Women filmmaker is taking on the challenge of reintroducing audiences to the world of Narnia, and as a fan of the series and Gerwig's work, I have high hopes for the project. There are many directions that Gerwig could take the narrative and adhere to the novels, but there's also an aspect unique to the films that should be revisited.
The Pevensie children introduce the audience to Narnia and play a vital role throughout the first book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. However, Gerwig's Chronicles of Narnia movies can fix many Pevensie problems, as the series' central characters are sometimes underdeveloped by Lewis. While Lewis's character arcs for most of the Pevensies are compelling,...

As a series of books that was wrapped up decades ago, there are a lot of things about The Chronicles of Narnia that are harsh realities now. C.S. Lewis published his fantasy series drawing upon his own religious beliefs in the mid-20th century, quickly becoming a beloved staple of children's literature. Narnia is often compared to The Lord of the Rings, given the authors' friendship, the drastic differences in their approaches to their worlds inspired by medieval literature, and both series' huge impact on the fantasy genre.

Greta Gerwig's upcoming adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia has the opportunity to refresh the story and bring the beloved novels to life for a new generation. Written by C.S. Lewis, every Chronicles of Narnia book brings something unique to the table, and the experiences of the Pevensie children are a large part of this. The first book sees the four siblings enter Narnia for the first time, help release the realm from the terror of the White Witch, and take their place as kings and queens. Their lineage remains important throughout the series.
The siblings, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, all represent different facets of strength and bravery in the story. Though Edmund is often singled out because he mistakenly trusts the White Witch, it's Susan who deserves extra attention in the next iteration of the narrative. Netflix's Narnia reboot must expand on stories that both the...

Greta Gerwig's The Chronicles of Narnia can improve upon an issue with the Pevensie children in the later books. Netflix's upcoming adaptations have Gerwig directing and writing two Narnia films so far, but all the installments in C.S. Lewis' beloved fantasy series may ultimately be adapted if the first two prove to be a success. Prior to Netflix acquiring the rights, Disney adapted The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Although we don't yet know which two books Greta Gerwig is adapting for Netflix's The Chronicles of Narnia reboot, I'm tentatively excited to see how the adaptation nails one of the books' worst villains: Uncle Andrew. A series of seven children's fantasy novels by C.S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia has made the leap from page to screen before, most notably with the 2005 adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Although it was published first, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is actually the second installment in Lewis' Narnia book series.
I think most people envision the story of the 2005 film when they think of the Narnia novels, but I'm excited to see how Greta Gerwig's The Chronicles of Narnia reboot will tackle the book series and its unusual arc. Some sources indicate that Gerwig will tackle The Silver Chair first (via...

Netflix's Narnia adaptation faces challenges due to short book lengths, requiring careful adaptation for success. Gerwig needs to balance loyalty to source material while making necessary changes for Netflix's Narnia films. Avoiding Disney's mistakes, Netflix must stay true to Narnia's spirit for potential hit adaptations.
Greta Gerwig's The Chronicles of Narnia adaptation faces a difficult challenge due to the source material. Following the record-breaking success of Gerwig's Barbie, she is attached to write and direct at least two of Netflix's upcoming films based on the beloved book series by C.S. Lewis. While this is the first time Netflix has adapted the Narnia books, the series has been adapted numerous times in the past, including three films made by Disney.

The Chronicles of Narnia series is kept alive by its intricate worldbuilding and beloved characters created by C.S. Lewis. Not all books in the series are remembered equally, with some like The Horse and His Boy diverging from the main storyline. The Last Battle, the final book in the series, takes a dark turn with religious themes and an intense ending that differs from the character-driven narratives of Narnia.
The first book in The Chronicles of Narnia series was published in 1950, and since then, the children's fantasy series has never faded into obscurity. All of this is thanks to the intricate worldbuilding and vivid characters that the author, C.S. Lewis, created. Lewis was a longtime friend of another famed fantasy writer, J.R.R. Tolkien, but Lewis had a knack for developing stories that would capture the hearts and minds of children for generations to come. However, The Chronicles of Narnia series encompasses seven books,...

The Magicians offers a dark twist on the beloved fantasy series, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia. The Lost Story, released in 2024, also tells a mature fantasy tale, blending similarities with Narnia alongside adult characters. The Lost Story is a potential replacement for The Magicians, offering a similar dark and adult take on a beloved fantasy world.

One of the early highlights of the Disney era of Star Wars was the debut of the animated series Star Wars Rebels. Helmed by Star Wars: The Clone Wars alum Dave Filoni, the series was aimed at a younger audience than The Clone Wars had been but soon attracted Star Wars fans of all ages. Deftly navigating the tricky task of crafting bold new stories without upsetting established canon, Rebels excelled in delivering the compelling characters, high stakes and swashbuckling action that fans have come to expect from the very best Star Wars stories. Revolving around the crew of the Ghost, Rebels shone a new light on the Galactic Civil War, fought by the Galactic Empire and the Rebellion.

C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia is one of the most beloved children’s series and one of the best-known fantasy works in the history of literature. The stories of the Pevensie family and their friends and allies in the fictional world of Narnia are spread through seven books, starting with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950) and ending with The Last Battle (1956). The series is Lewis’ best-known work even today and while most people have been acquainted with it through the books, there are some who snuck into the world of Narnia via the film adaptations from several years ago.

The Wheel of Time series may omit 10 important book moments in upcoming seasons, including Ishamael's return as Moridin. The show's trajectory makes it easier to predict what will be skipped, like Mat's encounter with the Aelfinn and Eelfinn. Key scenes like Rand fighting Ishamael at the Stone of Tear may not make it to the adaptation due to time restraints and storyline changes.

Prime Video's The Wheel of Time is an adaptation of Robert Jordan's fantasy novel series of the same name, but the show looks increasingly likely to omit 10 hugely important moments from Jordan's novels. The Wheel of Time season 3 is expected to adapt the fourth novel in Jordan's series, The Shadow Rising, but it remains to be seen if elements from any of the other novels in the series will be included.

I don’t know if Dark Horse is actually trying to adapt every last bit of short Neil Gaiman into comics form. He’s written a lot of stuff, and much of it wouldn’t adapt well. But it does feel like they’re trying, at least, with a long sequence of individual graphic novels and a few omnibuses stretching back more than a decade.
The grandly titled “Neil Gaiman Library” has mostly been stories that can turn into reasonable-length books. I’ve seen a bunch of them: A Study in Emerald ; Only the End of the World Again ; Chivalry ; Snow, Glass, Apples ; and Troll Bridge . But not all Gaiman stories can be fit into that length, no matter how hard Procrustes works.
So in 2019 we got The Problem of Susan and Other Stories , which includes adaptations of the title story, another short story, and two poems. Presumably, with this as a model,...

Netflix is creating a film series adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia, with Greta Gerwig writing and directing the first two movies. There is debate among fans about whether to read the Narnia books in release order or chronological order. Previous adaptations of the Narnia books include a TV movie, a BBC film series, and three movies by Disney – the latter of which were well-received despite not completing the entire series.
With Netflix making a movie series adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia, it’s the perfect time to revisit the movies and books; however, understanding the right order isn’t agreed upon. Five years ago, Netflix acquired the rights to every book in The Chronicles of Narnia, the first movie company to purchase them all. Peter and Susan Pevensie don't return to Narnia in "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" due to their age and experiences. What Happened To The Pevensie Siblings In The Books After Disney’s Chronicles Of Narnia Movies Ended
The Chronicles of Narnia movies left many plot threads and character relationships unresolved, leaving audiences unsatisfied with the conclusion. The original Narnia books by C.S. Lewis go much further than the movies, providing additional details about the Pevensie siblings' journeys and personalities. Peter becomes the High King of Narnia and plays a crucial role in protecting the realm, while Susan loses her faith in Narnia and lives a happy life on Earth. Edmund has further adventures in the past, and Lucy continues to believe in Narnia and has a significant role in the final battle.
Disney's The Chronicles of Narnia series follows several young protagonists, but it's not clear what happened to the Pevensie siblings after the films finished. Netflix's reboot of The Chronicles of Narnia should not stick to the original ending as it may alienate viewers due to its heavy religious undertones. The current fantasy landscape calls for refreshing twists and turns, so Netflix must carefully decide which parts of the source material to keep and which to get rid of. There are opportunities to finesse the ending by making changes, such as avoiding explicit mention of the crash and including Susan's presence, to strike a balance between honoring the source material and providing closure for all characters.
It would be a huge mistake for Netflix to use the original ending of The Chronicles of Narnia in its upcoming reboot. In the ever-expanding landscape of television adaptations, Netflix's ambitious venture into C.S. Lewis' timeless fantasy world has ardent fans awaiting its release. She's best known for her small dramas that analyze how young women exist in the world. However, it was only a matter of time before she moved forward into large franchise films, marking these as her first foray into that side of filmmaking.
All things considered, this is a great idea. Gerwig is undoubtedly talented, and these films have the potential to be classics for a new generation, just as the originals are. However, to ensure that she lives up to the already high expectations, Gerwig should shift her focus to the Narnia novels that have yet to be put to the screen rather than remaking the beloved original films.

Netflix is rebooting The Chronicles of Narnia with its own series of films, but must learn from the mistakes of the ones that came out in the 2000s in order to succeed. Based on the popular fantasy book series from British author C.S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia began with arguably the most well-known of the seven novels, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, which Disney adapted in 2005 and followed by adaptations of the next two books in the series, Prince Caspian in 2008 and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 2010. While the first film was successful, subsequent sequels became less popular with critics and audiences.

Throughout Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Captain Rex’s armor has an increasing number of tally marks. At first, fans might assume those marks represent kills. However, while that explanation was the original one, later episodes reveal that meaning no longer is canon. By changing the meaning of the tally marks on Rex's armor, The Clone Wars has created new possibilities for Rex's character.
The Clone Wars co-creator Dave Filoni confirmed in a 2011 interview with IGN that the tally marks represented kills. Daniel Raboldt’s low-budget but visually impressive film has more than a whisper of A Quiet Place about it, as two survivors fight their robotic overlords without making any noise

The Last Battle is a farewell and a celebration, a re-creation of the Clone Wars in the days of the Empire. It’s also a re-creation of The Clone Wars in Rebels, with a lot to unpack about the relationship between the two shows and the dynasties they portray. Writer Brent Friedman paces the episode well and gives unique voices to both Rex and Ezra. However, those voices don’t quite match what came before, and the episode just barely touches on fascinating ideas about why the Republic fell, instead becoming an introspective story that leans on the fans’ (and crew members’) fondness for an earlier show.
