    Unusually grim tragic-comic western

From a time when the western was trying to appeal to a younger audience by making movies that featured boy protagonists rather than men, ("The Culpepper Cattle Company", "The Cowboys" and here, "The Spikes Gang"). This time the boys are Gary Grimes, who wisely gave up acting, Charlie Martin Smith and someone called Ron Howard who appeared in a popular tv series and I believe went into directing.

They're runaways from home who prove to be pretty useless at everything they turn their hand to until outlaw Lee Marvin takes them under his wing, at which point they become pretty good at killing. It's a typically amoral tale where even killing is played largely for laughs, at least at the beginning before it turns tragic along the lines of "Bonnie and Clyde", though this is never in that class and while it may not be the best thing Richard Fleischer, or for that matter Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank Jr, ever did it is still an unusally grim tale which might account for why it's now almost totally forgotten when others of its ilk are more fondly remembered.

    Hard Lessons

Three farm boys -- Gary Grimes, Ron Howard, and Charles Martin Smith -- find injured bank robber Lee Martin. They take care of him, and lie to their family and the posse pursuing him. When he offers to pay them, they turn him down. Then, on their own, they decide to rob a bank. They find themselves pursued to the Mexican border. South of the line, they find Marvin, who offers to take them on in his line of work.

Richard Fleischer's movie is set in a landscape of occasional falling-down builds in empty landscape and people of unforgiving morality and seemingly good-natured outlaws. In many ways, it's the flip side of Mark Rydell's THE COWBOYS, teaching a much harder and less palatable lesson in how to live in a harsh world. With Arthur Hunnicut and Noah Beery Jr.

    Great Movie

A gem of a movie.Very realistic and exciting.A good combination of an established actor (Marvin) combined with up & coming actors (Grimes,Smith & Howard). It portrays the american west in a realistic manner (like most westerns from the late 60's & early 70's)

Infinitely quotable and superior to most .......

Lee Marvin has played the role of crusty gunslinger many times, and he does not disappoint here. The story of three farm boys throwing in with the wily bank robber is both believable and different. The film is never dull, with Marvin spewing forth quotable lines throughout. This is not some sugar coated view of their desperate situation as hunted men, but rather a realistic look at the downside of breaking the law. Of course the boys elicit sympathy, even though they are killers, no different than their mentor. "The Spikes Gang" is one of those movies that far exceeds expectations, is worth seeking out, and not easily forgotten. - MERK

    A very rare underrated Classic!

I saw this movie about two years ago while I was up studying at around 4:00 A.M. Lee Marvin plays an outlaw that takes three runaway teens under his wing. He teaches them the tricks of the trade in bank robbing. The movie takes on a surprising twist towards the end. A very nice movie that almost NEVER comes on TV. If anyone knows how I could get the VHS version, please email me. Thanks. I give it a 10.

    • Trivia
Robert Beatty, despite being credited as The Sheriff, is not seen.
    • Goofs
At the beginning, the boys gather to bring Spikes some food under a bright blue nighttime sky. This obviously was filmed during the daytime, using a filter to darken the images. These scenes were only slightly darker than the preceding scenes when the posse came through looking for Spikes. This slightly darker scene, coupled with the sound of crickets, evidently was supposed to give the illusion that it was nighttime, despite the brilliant blue sky.
    • Quotes

Will Young: We sure didn't mean nothing like this to come of it. We didn't desire to commit murder. It just kinda ran away from us.

Harry Spikes: Well, we all started out as somethin' else, way back.
