Cue The Who. ABC has ordered The Kids Are Alright TV show to series. In a day overwhelmed by cancellations and renewals, there were also a few new programs greenlit today. This one hails from ABC Studios. Writer Tim Doyle is executive producing, and the sitcom is inspired by his childhood. A 1970s comedy, The Kids Are Alright centers on the Irish-Catholic Cleary family. The Walking Dead's Michael Cudlitz and The West Wing's Mary McCormack star as Mike and Peggy Cleary. These parents of eight sons are just trying to get through the day in a working-class neighborhood near Los Angeles. The ABC cast also includes Sam Straley as Lawrence, Caleb Martin Foote as Eddie, Sawyer Barth as Frank, Christopher Paul Richards as Joey, Jack Gore as Timmy, Andy Walken as William,...

ABC ordered a mix of comedy pilots this season — most revolved around families but some ventured into workplace and even the superhero genre. In the end, the ones that made the cut to series are the 1970s-set The Kids Are Alright (fka untitled Tim Doyle), which just got the nod, and Single Parents, which was picked up earlier today. Both are family comedies, as are all renewed ABC half-hour series.
ABC last year tried to broaden up its comedy field with The Mayor, its most profile new comedy series and the only one to get a fall launch. It fizzled as did another comedy that had a strong workplace component, Alex Inc. Meanwhile, the revival of ABC’s classic family comedy Roseanne had a blockbuster premiere. The family-themed new comedy Splitting Up Together, which launched behind Roseanne, was the only freshman ABC comedy to make it to Season 2.

ABC has ordered the period comedy “The Kids Are Alright” to series.
Set in the 1970s, the ensemble, single-camera comedy follows a traditional Irish-Catholic family, the Clearys, as they navigate big and small changes during one of America’s most turbulent decades. In a working-class neighborhood outside Los Angeles, Mike and Peggy raise eight boisterous boys who live out their days with little supervision. The household is turned upside down when oldest son Lawrence returns home and announces he’s quitting the seminary to go off and “save the world.” Times are changing and this family will never be the same. The series is inspired by the childhood of writer and executive producer Tim Doyle.

ABC is adding another retro comedy to its primetime lineup, handing a series order to ’70s family sitcom The Kids Are Alright, TVLine has learned.
Set in a working-class neighborhood outside Los Angeles during the 1970s, The Kids Are Alright stars Michael Cudlitz (The Walking Dead) as Mike Cleary, the patriarch of a traditional — and big! — Irish-Catholic family, raising eight rowdy boys with his wife Peggy (In Plain Sight‘s Mary McCormack). Their lives are thrown for a loop when eldest son Lawrence (Chicago P.D.‘s Sam Straley) quits seminary school and returns home with plans to “save the world.

Remember when you were a teenager and you thought your parents were so evil? Well, for the kids in “Marvel’s Runaways,” that’s actually true. Runaways has been a comic series that has been stuck in the dreaded Development Hell for years. Writer Brian K. It was animated “The Boss Baby” (20th Century Fox) vs. manga remake “Ghost in the Shell” (Paramount) starring Scarlett Johansson at the weekend box office.
As expected, the week’s two new wide releases combined to gross just under $70 million, but with a shocker: the latest DreamWorks Animation release took the lion’s share of that total. $100-million actioner “The Ghost in the Shell” turned out to be yet another pixel-packed movie to be met by blah critical and domestic audience response. Foreign will have to save the day on this one.
Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” (Disney) barely missed its third #1 weekend, but propelled the Top Ten box office to a 37 per cent ($43 million) improvement over last year (when nothing much was going on). The year-to-date uptick remains a steady five per cent. And that’s ahead of the expected huge April 14 opening for F. Gary Gray’s...

The book was raw & dirty, and did you read what that girl did with that guy on page 167? Racking up a stack of Oscar nominations, Peyton Place became one of the big hits of its year, launched the careers of several young actors, and proved that Hollywood could pasteurize most any so-called un-filmable book. Lana Turner is the nominal star but the leading actress is Diane Varsi, in her film debut.

“Ape,” a psychological thriller directed by Josh Hutcherson (“The Hunger Games,” “The Kids Are Alright”), debuted today on the Conde Nast-owned digital platform The Scene. The fifteen-minute film stars Hutcherson as a schizophrenic teen battling hallucinations, with a script by Jon Johnstone.
The film is part of a new emerging filmmakers initiative from Conde Nast Entertainment, Indigenous Media, and Josh and Michelle Hutcherson’s Turkeyfoot Productions, called The Big Script. Citing an increase in major studio tent pole films, The Big Script aims to find and produce “independently created content that can thrive on digital/emerging platforms” and is “driven by unique voices.”

There's nothing like Kiefer Sutherland being in charge!
Sure, this time around he's playing President instead of protecting a president, but that doesn't mean he's not going to be a badass.
What's interesting is how cool, calm, and collected Sutherland's Tom Kirkman appears in these photos from considering his life has just been turned upside down.
It bodes well for the future of the country if a guy like Kirkman can handle the pressure so well. No rash decision from this guy it seems!
While Kirkman keeps everyone calm inside, FBI Agent Hannal Wells (Maggie Q) is keeping everyone calm outside. She's definitely got some work to do to try to figure out what happened and why.
How do you think it will all play out? Check out the photos from Designated Survivor Season 1 Episode 1 and speculate away!

There are some figures in film history who fade away along with the era in which they produce the bulk of their work. And then there’s veteran B-movie producer and director Roger Corman, still chipper than ever at 90. As a filmmaker, Corman was responsible for a string of vibrant Edgar Allen Poe adaptations in the early sixties (most of which starred Vincent Price). He also directed William Shatner in his best pre-“Star Trek” performance as a race-baiting lunatic in 1962’s “The Intruder.” But Corman more or less stopped directing movies in 1970 (with the exception of 1990’s “Frankenstein Unbound”) and shifted focus to producing a string of low budget genre efforts — several of which introduced some of the great American filmmakers still working today, including Martin Scorsese, Frances Ford Coppola, James Cameron, Jonathan Demme, and many others.

“Dead of Summer” is a campy new horror, mystery series that debuts on Freeform this June 28. Created by Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz and Ian B. Goldberg, the story follows a group of camp counselors who stumble into a small town filled with demon worshippers and disgruntled ghosts.
Variety’s TV critic Sonia Saraiya writes, “The teen horror series is loaded with clichés, but with enough popcorn, it might make for a fun summer fling.” She notes that the first episode is “astonishingly bad” and includes “bland protagonist Amy.” “At the very least, while escaping the dog days of summer inside with the air-conditioning, there’s plenty of fun to be had in laughing at how bad it is,” she concludes.

The Descendants are adding a poor, unfortunate soul to their ranks.
Disney Channel on Friday announced that China Anne McClain (A.N.T. Farm) is joining the cast of Descendants 2 as Uma, the daughter of legendary sea witch Ursula. McClain previously voiced Freddie, the daughter of The Princess and the Frog‘s Dr. Facilier, in the animated series Descendants: Wicked World.
The sequel — premiering in 2017, with production slated to begin this summer — will also introduce the offspring of Captain Hook and Beauty and the Beast‘s Gaston; their casting will be announced soon.
The cast of the original 2015 film will also return for Descendants 2 — Dove Cameron as Mal, daughter of Maleficent; Cameron Boyce as Carlos, son of Cruella de Vil; Booboo Stewart as Jay, son of Jafar; Sofia Carson as Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen; and Mitchell Hope as King Ben, son of Belle and the Beast — along with Kenny Ortega as director, executive producer and choreographer.
“Just when you thought ‘Happily Ever After’ had come to the land of Auradon, Descendants 2 turns the page to reveal a whole new level of mystery and surprise,” warns Disney Channel president Gary Marsh.

If you are excited by the prospect of a Lonely Island movie, I have good news for you. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is a Lonely Island movie in every way, packed with music and jokes. At 90 minutes, it moves fast, and it offers up some laser-sharp satire. If there’s any overall problem with the film, it is that they’ve made a very specific satire of a target that is so ridiculous it almost resists parody. It’s easy to just make the comparison to This Is Spinal Tap, the mockumentary that launched Rob Reiner’s career as a director, but Popstar is a reaction to a very different kind of film than Spinal Tap was. You have to go back and look at films like The Song Remains The Same or The Kids Are Alright to understand what the culture was that Spinal Tap targeted, while modern...

★★★★☆ In half a century of existence, The Who have had a consistent presence in cinema. Aside from their theatrical projects Tommy (1975) and Quadrophenia (1979), their history has also been chronicled in documentaries such as The Kids Are Alright (1979) and Amazing Journey (2007). This new documentary looks at the men behind the band, Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp. Aspiring filmmakers who initially saw managing a rock band as a back door into the film business, the film follows their and the band's journey to stardom, and the many implosions along the way. The story of two young men who, in some ways inadvertently, built rock history as they went along, is both charming and fascinating.

All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Click here for a complete list of our essays. How to decide in the grand scheme of things which film year stands above all others? History gives us no clear methodology to unravel this thorny but extremely important question. Is it the year with the highest average score of movies? So a year that averages out to a B + might be the winner over a field strewn with B’s, despite a few A +’s. Or do a few masterpieces lift up a year so far that whatever else happened beyond those three or four films is of no consequence? Both measures are worthy, and the winner by either of those would certainly be a year not to be sneezed at. But I contend the only true measure of a year’s...

Or The Unexpected Convenience of Sexism: Levinson’s Perplexing but Deviously Funny Stab at Roth
Decades passed between initial adaptations of novelist Philip Roth’s novels (1969’s Goodbye Columbus; 1972’s Portnoy’s Complaint) before filmmakers like Robert Benton and Isabel Coixet mounted their own renditions to varied reception in the past decade or so with The Human Stain (2003) and Elegy (2008), respectively. After a decently received found footage horror film with 2012’s The Bay, seasoned director Barry Levinson adapts The Humbling, which, like Roth’s novel itself, initially received some of the same unfavorable notices from Venice and Toronto Int. Film Fests. But Roth’s novels are exactly the kind of difficult narratives that used to make for a tradition of daring cinema that’s been eclipsed by safety and sanitization in an effort to decrease offense and increase mass satisfaction. That’s not to say that Levinson is entirely successful...

Move over Kevin Bacon! When it comes to working with everyone in Hollywood, Jennifer Aniston may be the actor to beat.
While Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon -- an idea that came from the actor himself when, in 1994, he told Premiere magazine that he’s worked with everybody -- has become the ultimate trivia game, it may be time to re-think who’s actually at the nexus.
Thanks in large part to Friends -- the former NBC sitcom now streaming on Netflix -- Aniston worked with a number of stars well before they were famous. And in the years since the series ended, Aniston has shared the screen with a few but key number of A-listers. But it wasn’t until she earned a 2015 Golden Globe nomination for her role in Cake that we realized she’s practically worked with everyone in Hollywood.
