Yes, the website that has made a business out of slapping percentage scores on art has decreed that "Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia" is one of a handful of films worthy of the elusive "perfect" score. That means it sits alongside James Cameron's seminal 1984 effort "The Terminator" and Andrei Tarkovsky's 1979 masterpiece "Stalker," both of which also hold 100% ratings and coincidentally are the only two perfect sci-fi movies ever made according to Rt (along with two of the "Toy Story" movies).

Though there had been earlier efforts, like Ealing Studios’s Dead of Night from 1945, the horror anthology film came into its own in the 1960s with titles like Kobayashi Masaki’s Kwaidan and the Poe-centric Spirits of the Dead from directors Roger Vadim, Louis Malle, and Federico Fellini. Hammer Films’s rival Amicus churned out no fewer than seven of them in a 10-year period starting with Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors. But the one that really got the omnibus rolling was Mario Bava’s Black Sabbath from 1963, an Italian-American co-production that resulted in two different versions of the film.

A legendary British film company, known for classics including Tales from the Crypt and The Vault of Horror, as well as Scream and Scream Again, The House That Dripped Blood, Madhouse, and The Beast Must Die, Amicus Productions largely operated between 1962 and 1977, and we’ve learned this week that a fresh revival of the company is on the way.

The press release informs us, “After decades in the shadows, the legendary Amicus Productions is set for a grand revival thanks to the team at Hex Studios.

“Their upcoming film, In the Grip of Terror, seeks to honor the classic studio’s legacy while forging a new chapter in British horror.”

Drawing inspiration from iconic films like Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965), Tales from the Crypt (1972), and Asylum (1972), the new portmanteau feature will spotlight four tales rooted in the works of revered authors such as H.P. Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce, and E.F Benson.

Iconic British horror label Amicus Productions is resurrecting with anthology film “In the Grip of Terror.”

Based at Shepperton Studios, Amicus was founded by American producers and screenwriters Milton Subotsky and Max Rosenberg and was active between 1962 and 1977. The outfit was mainly known for their portmanteau or anthology films featuring four or five horror shorts each, including “Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors” (1965), “Torture Garden” (1967), “The House That Dripped Blood” (1971), “Tales from the Crypt” (1972), “Asylum” (1972), “Vault of Horror” (1973) and “From Beyond the Grave” (1974). A galaxy of stars including Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Joan Collins, Donald Sutherland, Herbert Lom and Patrick Magee starred in the films.

With a central theme of medical macabre, “In the Grip of Terror” will draw inspiration from “Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors,” “Tales from the Crypt” and “Asylum” and will spotlight four tales rooted in the works of revered authors such as H.P. Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce and E.F Benson.

When Kino Lorber announced in April 2021 that a Blu-ray of Universal’s The Spider Woman Strikes Back (1946) was scheduled for issue in autumn I was, to put it mildly, over-joyed. It’s not that The Spider Woman Strikes Back is a great film – it most certainly is not – but it’s long been a missing entry on home video, a film of great interest to collectors of Golden Age horror. The studio has chosen, time and again, to re-master and re-offer the classic and iconic “Universal Monsters” in nearly every conceivable home video format and creative packaging. Too often these releases would be at the expense of the studios less famous genre titles as the still unissued Ghost Catchers (1944), and The Cat Creeps (1946).

Only treats for Gael García Bernal next Halloween. The actor is set to star in a new MCU special at Disney+ that revolves around the spooky holiday. On Thursday, Nov. 4, Variety reported that production should begin in early 2022 for the untitled show. While plot details are still masked, sources tell the publication that Gael will play a character based on Werewolf by Night. The Mozart in the Jungle performer most recently starred in the M. Night Shyamalan film Old and has a bunch of goodies coming his way. Next year he will join the HBO Max series Station Eleven, as well as play a part in the Jennifer Lopez film, The Mother.  The Halloween special is just one more holiday based...

I for one will never tire of them: those assorted candy boxes with always one or two disagreeable sorts to spit out, but overall filled with enjoyable treats. And so it goes in the movies as well; call them horror portmanteaus, omnibuses, or lotsashortstogether, they offer outrageous highs littered with occasional lows that offer a sugar rush once the box is done. Tales from the Crypt (1972) is one of my favorite examples of a horrific sampler.

This Amicus production was given a release by Twentieth Century Fox in its native UK, and by Cinerama Releasing Corporation in the US, and did quite well on both sides of the pond. Cinerama got the jump in March, with the UK afforded spookier seasonal vibes that September. Critics were kind to this latest from the studio that gave us Torture Garden and The House That Dripped Blood, and spotlit Peter Cushing in perhaps his most poignant role.

Marvel Studios is looking to do more to flesh out the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Still, it looks like they’re planning on doing more to tackle more horror/supernatural corners. A new report from The Wrap mentions that the studio is moving forward with an untitled “Halloween Special” for Disney+ with production to begin next year and are looking to a Latino actor in their 30s to possibly play Werewolf By Night, a horror superhero.

Andre Gower, best known for playing Sean Crenshaw in the 1980s cult hit The Monster Squad, suffered a "severe heart attack" over the weekend which left him hospitalized. The 48 year old discussed his near death experience as part of the Gofundme page that has been set up to pay for the actor's medical bills.

Gower was playing tennis when he suddenly felt unwell, and after being rushed to hospital it was confirmed that he had suffered a heart attack, which has lead to him having a pacemaker fitted. The information shared on the page reveals just how close he came to death.

Andre Gower, who also appeared in 80s TV series' such as Knight Rider, The Twilight Zone and Remington Steele, posted on his Facebook page about the incident, sharing a video from hospital in which he had this to say.

Lyndon Chubbuck, a director and photographer known for such film as 2001’s “War Bride” and 2000’s “The Right Temptation,” has died. He was 67.

Chubbuck died at his home in Los Angeles on April 13. He was married to prominent acting coach Ivana Chubbuck and was a co-founder of Ivana Chubbuck Studio, which has worked with such notables as Charlize Theron, Brad Pitt and Halle Berry.

Lyndon Chubbuck also served as a partner in advertising agency Andrew Janson & Partners, where he worked on campaigns for Swatch, Paramount Pictures, E!, Sallie Mae and Miller Brewing Company. He was known for his strong social conscience and also worked on creative material for the ACLU, Amnesty International and Salvation Army.

Wardell will portray Junior, the teenage son of Koy’s on-screen persona, and Noblezada plays Junior’s friend Ruth.

Frank Lupo, the TV writer-producer who was a frequent collaborator with Stephen J. Cannell in the 1980s on such high-octane dramas as “The A-Team,” “Hunter” and “Wiseguy,” has died. He was 66.

Lupo died Feb. 18 at his home in Florida, according to his sister, Linda Joy Sullivan.

Lupo’s work in TV took off in the late 1970s when he wrote for such series as “Battlestar Galactica,” “Magnum, P.I.,” “B.J. and the Bear” and “The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo.”

Lupo worked on the Universal Television lot in the same era as Cannell, the prolific showrunner behind “The Rockford Files” and “Baretta.” Lupo wrote several episodes of Cannell’s ABC dramedy “The Greatest American Hero.”

Lupo and Cannell then co-created “The A-Team,” the action-drama with touches of comedy that became a massive hit for NBC in 1983. Cannell, who died in 2010, famously took the bold step of launching his own independent production banner on the back of “A-Team.

Frank Lupo, the partner of Stephen J. Cannell on many popular 1980s action shows, died Feb. 17 at his home in Florida, according to his sister and social media. He was 66-years-old and no cause of death was given.

Lupo was part of the creative engine that served up the crime drama television shows The A-Team, Hunter, and Wiseguy. He was also a writer and executive producer on the first season of CBS’ Walker, Texas Ranger.

Born in New York City, Lupo met Cannell at Universal Television in Los Angeles. He began as a writer, penning episodes of ABC’s Battlestar Galactica and NBC’s B.J. and the Bear before joining forces with Cannell in 1981 on the ABC series The Greatest American Hero.

When Polish lawmakers tabled a contentious new bill last fall that would all but make abortion illegal, tens of thousands took to the streets across the country in protest, voicing their anger at the steady erosion of women’s rights in the conservative, Catholic nation led by a right-wing government.

Among the demonstrators on the front lines was Agnieszka Holland, the three-time Oscar-nominated director, who has become almost as recognized in recent years for her staunch opposition to the ruling Law and Justice party as her prolific output across a long, celebrated career.

“This anti-abortion law is so unbearable and so brutal that it, by now, is a tragedy,” Holland tells Variety. But the director adds that the protests have also sparked an awakening, particularly among the younger generation. “It’s quite a strong voice,” she says. “This change is happening.”

Clarice, episode 3, “Are You Alright?,” almost allows Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) to overcome the typecasting of her role in the events in the film The Silence of the Lambs. The federal cop practically changes the venue by sheer force of will, as if she could burn the idea of a serial killer from the network series. Sadly, her flame is still attracting too many moths.

The episode again begins in the therapist’s office, so we know the scene will be brief. Both the patient and the doctor appear to be sparring rather than psychoanalyzing. Every sentence is a game of chicken, and it begins to feel more like an interrogation than a session. What makes it interesting are the cuts, which bring doubt to the proceedings. Is Clarice being paranoid? Yes, of course, but that doesn’t mean no one’s after her.

Update: A lawsuit against HGTV Windy City Rehab stars Alison Gramenos and Donovan Eckhardt has been resolved.

Gramenos, who goes by Alison Victoria on the show, posted online via Instagram Friday, writing, “I gratefully announce that the lawsuit arising out of the project at 1700 Wabansia has been resolved.”

She and the plaintiffs issued a statement that Gramenos said was designed to serve as the “final word on the dispute,” below:

“Plaintiffs Shane C. Jones and Samantha V. Mostaccio have voluntarily resolved their claims related to the construction project at 1700 Wabansia. They have done this after consultation with their new counsel, the law office of Jayaram Law, Inc. who has provided effective legal advice and counseling.

With a full moon gracing us just in time for Halloween 2020, this critic decided to revisit one of the less-loved Universal Classic Monsters, Henry Hull’s titular beast in the flop curio Werewolf of London (1935). We’ll examine what was essentially a werewolf-infused reinterpretation of the Robert Louis Stevenson novel Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), and how Universal learned from its mistakes to create a trailblazing masterpiece six years later. Werewolf of London, ultimately, stands as an imperfect but intriguing early stab at reinterpreting classic werewolf mythology for a big screen presentation.

As our tale begins, famed obsessive botanist and neglectful husband Dr. Wilfred Glendon (Henry Hull) travels to Tibet to retrieve a rare flower, the “mariphasa lumina lupina,” a “phosphorescent wolf flower” that only blooms under moonlight. Though he succeeds in grabbing the plant he covets, he is also bitten by a wild werewolf in the process.

It’s Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing together in a horror picture, a formula no shock feature fan can resist. Most of us remember staring at the beautiful full-color photo of Chris Lee in monster makeup in Denis Gifford’s picture book about horror movies. Yet this has remained one of the pair’s most obscure items, at least as a quality presentation. Powerhouse Indicator’s expert added value items put all the rumors to rest, including the question that’s been repeated through the years — where’s the legendary 3-D version? Or perhaps more to the point, was there really a 3-D version? And then there’s the other question — is the movie any good?

“It neutralizes mesons somehow. They’re the atomic glue holding matter together!” For most of the 1950s George Pal’s Martian invasion spectacle reigned as the top Sci-fi spectacle about an alien invasion. All the money went into the visuals, beautifully turned out by Byron Haskin and Gordon Jennings. Paramount’s much-awaited full restoration job does the picture justice, even if fussy fans will continue to argue the ‘what about the wires?’ battle. Even more impressive than the visuals is the film’s superb sound design, which still blows audiences away whether in mono or a new 5.1 remix. Criterion’s extras don’t critique the film as much as they tout the high-class restoration (and minor revisions).

When you think of Dracula, some iconic names immediately come to mind – Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, Gary Oldman, Jack Palance… and Raphael Engel.

Wait.

Who?

Raphael Peter Engel, aka “Zandor Vorkov” played the thirsty count in one of the most unique films to feature the immortal character – 1971’s Dracula vs Frankenstein, made by the prolific B-movie team of director Al Adamson and co-writer/producer Sam Sherman.

Both the actor and the film itself took a very circuitous route to come into being. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Raphael (then known as Roger) grew up with a younger brother in Miami, Florida. “We did Saturday matinees – two films, cartoons, a short, popcorn and I’d walk down many blocks to the theater…”, Raphael recalls in an exclusive Cinema Retro interview. “That influenced me.
