While Puerto Rico gets much of the shine, thanks in no small part to its historic role in cultivating reggaetón’s roots as well as the contemporary exploits of one Bad Bunny, Colombia effectively serves as Latin music’s modern epicenter. Of the finite number of top tier Spanish-language artists active today, three boast origins in Medellín, the country’s second-largest city — including J Balvin and Karol G, who’ve become power players on the global pop stage largely by way of high-profile bilingual collaborations with the likes of Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj.

“A Better Tomorrow”, as well as spearheading the heroic bloodshed genre had the side effect of making the triad lifestyle appear more glamourous than it really was. In an industry where imitation is the (in)sincerest form of flattery, box office hits lead to copycats and director Taylor Wong teamed with Chow Yun-fat to make two of his better works in “Rich and Famous” and “Tragic Hero”. In 1989, their third collaboration was released in “Triads: The Inside Story”, which could not have been further removed from the other movies and purported to show a more realistic side to triad life.

When Nelson George sat down to write about the state of R&b for The Village Voice in the late Eighties, two super-producers were frequently on his mind: Teddy Riley, who helped invent a vicious new fusion called New Jack Swing in New York City, and his rival Babyface, a melodic mastermind based at the time in Los Angeles (but about to decamp to Atlanta).
George was writing from New York, and he was initially high on Riley, a hometown hero, but lukewarm on Babyface’s “computer-chip production.” In 1989, however,...

Nancy Drew‘s world was forever changed on Wednesday when she discovered that the most important mystery of her life was the one she didn’t even know she was solving.
Let’s start with reveal numero uno: Lucy Sable’s death wasn’t necessarily a homicide. After literally unearthing Lucy’s diary, Nancy discovered that she had secretly been pregnant. She gave birth on the cliff that night, and her subsequent fall was either an accident or — quite possibly, God forbid — her own decision. Either way, Carson Drew is no longer a suspect in what is no longer being considered a murder.

The announcement of a Woody Allen memoir was not meant with excitement by Hachette Book Group employees or those working at their multiple imprints. Dozens of employees across several imprints staged a walk-out earlier today to protest the release of Allen's upcoming memoir. Little, Brown and Company is one of the imprints under the Hachette umbrella. They are the publisher for Allen's estranged son Ronan Farrow's Catch and Kill book, which isn't sitting well with Farrow at the moment. Farrow has since announced that he is dropping the publisher.
Woody Allen's memoir, 'Apropos of Nothing', was just announced. The book details the director's life behind the camera, along with his personal life. At least 75 Hachette employees took to the streets this morning to protest the publisher's decision to work with Allen, who has been accused of sexual assault by his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow.

Mere days after the announcement that filmmaker Woody Allen would have a memoir hit shelves on April 7, dozens of employees from Hachette Book Group have staged a walkout from its New York City offices. Hachette owns the memoir’s imprint, Grand Central Publishing, as well as Little, Brown and Company, the publisher behind Allen’s estranged son Ronan Farrow’s #MeToo investigative reporting tome “Catch and Kill.” Farrow announced yesterday that he was dropping the publisher.
In a report from Deadline, news of the walkout on Thursday surfaced via Twitter, where one participant said there were at least 75 employees from the various imprints who took to the streets to protest the forthcoming memoir, titled “Apropos of Nothing.” See more reactions below. Another participant noted that this tactic was used similarly back in February 2018 to cancel disgraced political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos’ book “Dangerous” at Simon & Schuster, which ended up dropping the title.

I remember when extra-long TV episodes were a selling point. If “The X-Files” was airing a two-hour “television event,” Fox would lead its promos with the upped runtime. Finales were given extra gravitas with extended episodes, and sweeps week was filled with mega entries of each network’s highest-rated shows. “Longer” was meant to equal “better,” even though the motivation for most of these episodes was based in selling more ads around a popular program, rather than the program’s creators begging for more time.
Nevertheless, the “longer=better” concept has cemented itself in the minds of not only TV viewers (as those ads intended), but many of today’s TV creators, as well. Even when ads are a non-factor — like series on premium cable and streaming — there’s an abundance of flagrant offenders. Shows like Amazon Prime’s “Hunters” (which starts with a 90-minute pilot), HBO’s “The Outsider...

The sequel to Dangerous Driving will speed onto PC and consoles this year.
Three Fields Entertainment has announced that Dangerous Driving 2 is in the works. This, of course, is the sequel to Dangerous Driving, the high-octane racing game that was developed by a lot of people that previously worked on the Burnout franchise.
The crashing-heavy Dangerous Driving launched in April 2019 and is widely considered to be a spiritual successor to Burnout. This means that Dangerous Driving 2 is the official sequel to that spiritual successor. Does that make sense?
On the company's official website, as well as sharing the funky artwork that we've plonked atop this page, Three Fields Entertainment confirmed a few key features for Dangerous Driving 2. According to the blog post that broke the news of the game's existence, Dangerous Driving 2 will have split-screen multiplayer, online components from day one, and an open-world for players to explore.

The Michael Jackson Estate has reached an undisclosed settlement with Disney, putting to bed a 2018 copyright infringement lawsuit over “The Last Days of Michael Jackson” TV special.
Both sides filed a notice in U.S. District Court Wednesday to dismiss the complaint in favor of a settlement.
In the suit, which was brought against Disney in May of 2018, the estate called the special “a mediocre look back at Michael Jackson’s life and entertainment career,” and accused Disney of swiping the estate’s intellectual property.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” producer Graham King has struck a deal with the Michael Jackson estate for the pop star’s life and music rights, with plans to make a feature film based on both.
King has tapped “Gladiator” and “The Aviator” screenwriter John Logan for the project. The film currently has no studio or distributor attached. The script will not provide a “sanitized” look at the life of Jackson, accused of child sexual abuse in the explosive documentary “Leaving Neverland” this year, said a report from Deadline Hollywood, which first broke the news.
A King spokesperson confirmed the project with Variety, but would not comment on whether Logan’s script would include Jackson’s accusers — including choreographer Wade Robson and former child actor James Safechuck, both of whom had documented relationships with the late singer since childhood.

Why Are The Oscars Called “Oscars”?
Ever wonder why the Academy Awards are called the Oscars? Like most narratives in Hollywood, it’s a story lost to lore. The name credit primarily has been given to three assignors: Academy librarian Margaret Herrick, journalist Sidney Skolsky, and actress Bette Davis. The Academy officially adopted the nickname in 1939 making Oscar part of history.
Oscar was originally called the much more formal “The Academy Award of Merit,” which doesn’t quite have the personality that “Oscar” does. One of the academy’s founding members, MGM art director Cedric Gibbons, designed the original statuette: a sword-wielding crusader for the arts, standing on a film reel. He would go on to garner twenty-eight nominations and take home eleven awards. His collaborator, sculptor George Stanley reportedly modeled the statue after a Mexican model and actor Emilio “El Indio” Fernández.

A judge’s tentative ruling Thursday will allow Michael Jackson’s estate to continue its $100 million lawsuit against HBO for airing the documentary “Leaving Neverland.”
U.S. District Court Judge George Wu is expected to issue a final decision at the end of September.
The Jackson estate filed the lawsuit against HBO in February on the grounds that the “Leaving Neverland” documentary violated the terms of a non-disparagement clause of a 1992 agreement that granted HBO the right to air video from his “Dangerous” tour.
HBO filed a motion in August asking that the estate’s lawsuit be dismissed, citing the First Amendment. The documentary details accusations by Wade Robson and James Safechuck that Jackson sexually abused them when they were children.

Washington Post Executive Editor Martin Baron has fired back at President Trump for threatening to ban two Post reporters from the White House over a story that accused him of “self-sabotage.”
“The Washington Post staff is immensely proud to have these two superb journalists on staff,” Baron wrote in a statement issued by the paper’s communications VP, Kris Coratti.
“Philip Rucker and Ashley Parker have consistently demonstrated their integrity in covering the White House. We stand fully behind them and their important work,” Baron added. “The president’s statement fits into a pattern of seeking to denigrate and intimidate the press. It’s unwarranted and dangerous, and it represents a threat to a free press in this country.”

This latest salvo in Trump’s war of words with the Post came after an article describing the president’s “lost summer defined by self-inflicted controversies.

Sitting down to chat with Power co-creator Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson often means that the conversation takes turns you wouldn’t expect. Exhibit A: TVLine recently interviewed the rapper/actor/entrepreneur about his directorial debut — this Sunday’s episode (Starz, 8/7c) — but somehow wound up hearing a story about frigid weather, gastrointestinal distress and Kanan Stark’s last stand. And now you’re going to hear it, too.
Fans of the show were shocked when Kanan, the ruthless ex-con Jackson played, died last season in a shootout with police. During our talk, Jackson told TVLine that the outdoor location shoot...

MTV has removed late King of Pop Michael Jackson's name from their prestigious Video Vanguard Award.
The award had the "Dangerous" hitmaker's name in its prefix.
The Network has removed the name in the wake of HBO's controversial documentary "Leaving Neverland", which focuses on sexual abuse allegations against the late pop superstar, reports "pagesix.com".
MTV did include Jackson's name on a press release sent out to announce rapper Missy Elliott as this year's Vanguard recipient but other promos excluded his name.
While accepting the award, Elliott did mention Jackson during her acceptance speech. "The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award means so much to me," she said.

Warner Bros. has released a couple of new clips from their upcoming new DC animated film Batman: Hush. The first clip is called “Batman Vs. Bane” so, of course, you are going to get to see the two characters brutally fight! The second clip is called “Cat Chase” which features Batman chasing down Catwoman.
I’m a big fan of this Batman storyline which was originally written by Jeph Loeb with art by Jim Lee. I liked the first trailer that was released and there’s a good chance this will be a decent adaptation that fans will enjoy. Here’s the synopsis for those of you not familiar with the story:

Now that the likes of Year One, The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke and Under the Red Hood are out of the way, it’s long overdue that Batman: Hush be adapted as an animated film. Not only does the source material remain my favorite comic book story arc to feature the Caped Crusader, but it also serves as a perfect jumping on point because it includes so many essential characters.
Fortunately, we won’t have to wait much longer for it to arrive, as the flick will be made available digitally beginning on July 2oth, with 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack and Blu-ray Combo Pack releases set to follow on August 13th. Additionally, it’ll also hit the DC Universe streaming service on the latter date given.

Nick Murphy made his name with a sexy, stoner cover of Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” under the alias Chet Faker, a telling moniker for a pale Australian soul man. But like the jazz singer that moniker puns on, Murphy brought his own sexy, addled style to the table. It’s equally telling that he’s issued Run Fast Sleep Naked, his second full-length LP, under his real name. The singing’s less mannered, the vocal production lighter, the arrangements more varied, the rhythms more fidgety and expressionist. Maybe it’s...

April 5, 2019, marks the 111th anniversary of the birth of one of the screen’s greatest actresses, Bette Davis. For these birthday tributes Gold Derby usually chooses the Top 15 performances of a particular actor. With Davis that task is next to impossible. Davis appeared in close to 90 feature films over her career with probably at least two thirds of them being memorable for some reason. Choosing just 15 will likely result in endless complaints in the comments section over a fan’s particular favorite being left out. In order not to cause too much heartache among readers the following list ranks all of Davis’ Oscar nominated performances and throws in a few personal non-nominated favorites along the way. Her career achievements were such that we could probably run this column every year and only after about half a decade would we run out of films to list.

Lil Kim has dropped a music video for her new single “Go Awff” and the rapper is all about the glitz and glamour in the clip. Directed by Damien Sandoval, the video showcases Lil Kim’s over-the-top style, setting most of the choreography in front of a Lil Kim-branded private plane.
The banging track, which features a sample of the xx’s song “Dangerous,” lends itself both to the sultry dance moves showcased on the runway and to the black and white imagery that’s interspersed in between.

The closeup changes everything. In 1934, Bette Davis became a Star.
A very random question for you Oscar fanatics out there. Do you count Bette Davis as having 10 or 11 nominations? In other words, do you count her write-in nomination for Of Human Bondage (1934), her breakout star-making role which obviously led to her first win for the lesser performance in Dangerous (1935) the very next year, as one of her nods or do you go by the Academy's 'Of Human Bondage is not an official nomination' stance even though it's such an intrinsic part of Oscar lore of the 1930s?...

It could be lucky No. 7 and 13 for Glenn Close. She picked up her seventh Oscar nomination on Tuesday, for Best Actress for “The Wife,” which did not get any other nominations. If Close’s name is finally in the envelope on Oscar day, she’d be the 13th winner in the category as the only nominee for her film.
The first 12 were:
1. Mary Pickford, “Coquette” (1928/29)
2. Marie Dressler, “Min and Bill” (1930/31)
3. Helen Hayes, “The Sin of Madelon Claudet” (1931/32)
4. Katharine Hepburn, “Morning Glory” (1932/33)
5. Bette Davis, “Dangerous” (1935)
6. Joanne Woodward, “The Three Faces of Eve” (1957)
7. Sophia Loren, “Two Women” (1961)
8. Jodie Foster, “The Accused” (1988)
9. Kathy Bates, “Misery” (1990)
10. Jessica Lange, “Blue Sky” (1994)
11. Charlize Theron, “Monster” (2003)
12. Julianne Moore, “Still Alice” (2014)
Twelve times in the Oscars’ 90-year history doesn’t sound like a lot, but it is when you look at Best Actor, which only has five solo nominee winners: Emil Jannings, Jose Ferrer, Cliff Robertson, Michael Douglas and Forest Whitaker.

On a recent stop to Los Angeles, Christine and the Queens performed their Chris track “Comme Si” live at Capitol Studios, and a group of seven dancers joined Chris for the performance. The dancers added hip-hop moves and some dramatic flare to the synth-laden, new-wave song as singer Christine showed off her own moves in a spotlight and deceptively sings, “Focus on my voice and let go” (as if you could focus on anything but the dancing).

For at least a decade now, rap beats have been getting fiercer every year. The biggest producers in the genre largely abandoned traditional acoustic instrumentation, instead embracing the abrasive potential of software. As Kanye West worked on his 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, he kept a note on his wall reading, “No Acoustic Guitar In The Studio.” Producers like Lex Luger and Metro Boomin, who enjoyed dominant runs in the 2010s, took that approach to an extreme, constructing hulking beats that hit like jackhammers. The wave crested last year,...
