‘Veni Vidi Vici’ Directors on How Their Satire About the Power of Billionaires “Has Become Reality”
Image
Austrian filmmaker Daniel Hoesl and German partner Julia Niemann have made a name for themselves by focusing their black comedy and documentary movies on money and capitalism and how the resulting power imbalances cause social inequality. Hoesl’s 2016 film Winwin, for example, is a comedy about a U.S. investment fund that buys Austrian companies but also takes over politics in its capital Vienna. And the 2020 documentary Davos, co-directed by the two and written by Niemann, puts a spotlight on the contrast between the lives of those who live in the Swiss town of Davos year-round and the business and political elite that gathers there for the annual World Economic Forum.

Their latest film, Veni Vidi Vici, which debuted at Sundance 2024 and is getting its U.K. premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival on Saturday, with another screening on Sunday, looks to slay the excesses of capitalism with dark humor.

‘Vienna Blood’: Matthew Beard & Juergen Maurer Address Season 4 Twists & What’s Next
Image
Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt (Jürgen Maurer) and his partner Freudian psychoanalyst Max Liebermann (Matthew Beard) are back on the case for Season 4 of Vienna Blood, starting Sunday, January 5. The popular PBS drama set in 1909 sees the dynamic duo look into a double murder of a senior public official and an arms dealer in police custody. Liebermann just returned from a lecture tour in America before Rheinhardt asked for help. “[Max] has been on a very successful press tour because they’ve all lapped up his psychoanalytic theories, and he’s taken Freud over there. It’s gone down very well, which is, as a lot of this series is, quite loosely based on some truths about how well Freud did when he went over there,” Beard explained. “And he’s also been given a promotion at work. So he has a lot of new responsibilities, so he’s riding high when he comes back.

2025 TV Premiere Dates: New and Returning Shows
Image
If there’s a show you’ve been waiting years to return, chances are it’s coming back in 2025. From “Stranger Things” Season 5, which is expected to premiere later this year, to “Severance” Season 2, some of the biggest and buzziest shows on television are expected to make their returns in this new year.

Part of the reason for this big return has to do with the residual effects of the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Those historic Hollywood effects delayed production across the board. While broadcast series were largely able to air new episodes in 2024, prestige streaming and cable shows — which typically take a bit longer to produce on average — needed a bit more time to bounce back.

But bounce back they did. And it’s not just the “White Loti” and “Andors” of the world fans have to look forward to. Do you love procedural classics? New episodes of...

‘Vienna Blood’ Seller Red Arrow Studios International Rebrands Under Seven. One Moniker
Image
Red Arrow Studios International has rebranded as Seven. One Studios International.

The change will come into effect immediately, and eliminates the brand disparity between Seven. One and Red Arrow. Red Arrow Studios International remained as an operational brand name after Seven. One Studios was formed in November 2022 following the sale of Red Arrow Studios’ U.S. operations to The North Road Company.

That rebrand had come after the formation of German broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 had formed Seven. One Entertainment Group in 2020.

“Changing Red Arrow Studios International’s name to Seven. One Studios International aligns the business more closely with its parent company Seven. One Studios and that of Seven. One Entertainment Group,” said Tim Gerhartz, Managing Director of Seven. One Studios International. “It reinforces the Group’s strong commitment to the international production and distribution marketplace.”

Jenna Coleman, Complex Characters and No Easy Answers: How ‘The Jetty’ Explores “Primal” Issues
Image
Jenna Coleman had “avoided” playing a detective – until she was approached about playing rookie cop Ember Manning in a scenic lake town in Lancashire in North West England in BBC Studios’ The Jetty from creator and writer Cat Jones and Firebird Pictures.

“What appealed to me was that the character of Ember was completely there on page one,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Also, it’s a crime thriller, but it’s wrapped up in such a human, emotive, and poetic piece. It is crafted so it has all of the great things of a crime thriller – turning the page and having all of the beats. But it’s also such a feminine piece that really explores relationships and provokes. It has all sorts of blurred boundaries and is asking a lot of uncomfortable questions without fully answering them.”

The four-part series, a Firebird Pictures production for the BBC, is...

Clive Owen's Monsieur Spade Review
Image
AMC's limited series Monsieur Spade continues a recent tradition of welcoming mystery fans back to a bygone era. Many viewers may not be fully aware of Sam Spade -- whom Dashiell Hammett created in 1930 -- but most know the name, thanks to Humphrey Bogart's classic performance in 1941's film version of The Maltese Falcon. Decades later, Spade still remains the quintessential hard-boiled private detective. Monsieur Spade walks a high-wire act of updating the character, while keeping him firmly ensconced in a nostalgic past.

That fits right in with Hollywood's current trend of revivals and reboots, but this project never feels like one. It doesn't drag with unnecessary exposition or feel the need to make too many callbacks. Instead, Monsieur Spade focuses on telling a strong story that simply happens to be about an established hero. The fact that it's also a co-production with French TV channel Canal+ also...

Netflix's Sleeping Dog Cast & Character Guide
Image
Netflix’s Sleeping Dog (Schlafende Hunde) is an original German limited series that features a talented cast. Written by Christoph Darnstädt, this six-episode crime thriller follows the story of a fallen cop with amnesia who teams up with a rookie prosecutor to investigate a supposedly closed and solved murder case. The further they find themselves in the case the more they realize how entrenched it is in a conspiracy within the police department and the justice system, endangering them. Netflix’s Sleeping Dog is based on the 2016 Israeli series The Exchange Principle (Ikaron HaHachlafa) by Noah Stallman and Oden Davidoff.

This is Netflix’s second collaboration with Real Film Berlin, their first being the critically acclaimed limited series Unorthodox, which was adapted from a real-life story. While the six tumultuous episodes are full of gripping and moving storylines, much praise has also gone to the talented cast, who have all...

Rose McIver in iZombie (2015)
Cluedunnit Podcast, the comedy podcast that plays the game of TV mystery procedurals and making wild guesses
Rose McIver in iZombie (2015)
The gun rings out, the character drops to the floor – another mystery procedural has begun! TV sleuths have 60 minutes (at least!) to figure out whodunnit. To Jacob Coakley and Jessica Hird, co-hosts of the Cluedunnit podcast, that seems like entirely too much time. On each episode of their comedy TV rewatch podcast Cluedunnit, they immediately guess the perp before there are any commercials – or clues.

“Every mystery starts a new game,” says Hird. “Of all the various suspects, who do you bet on? Guy-With-a-Mustache? Lady Germaphobe? Or Sexy-Stranger-With-The-Menacing-Stare?”

“Mystery novels were originally called ‘The Grandest Game’ by mystery author John Dickson Carr,” adds Coakley. “He argued that a good detective story was a hoodwinking contest, a duel between author and reader. Well, in any duel it’s always best to shoot first. So we go off half-cocked, making the best guesses we can, as soon as we can. Of course,...

Murder Mystery Cinema Is Afoot In Vienna Blood Season 3 [Exclusive Clip]
Image
Screen Rant is pleased to present an exclusive clip from season 3 of the PBS series Vienna Blood, which airs Sundays on the network. This weekend kicks off the final 2-part mystery of the season, which is called “Death is Now a Welcome Guest.” The story, created by Steve Thompson (who has written for both BBC's Sherlock and Doctor Who) and based on the novel by Frank Tallis, takes place in 1908.

At the start of the worldwide phenomenon known as cinema, the society of Vienna is shaken to the core when a famous silent film actress is murdered. The victim was a former patient of Doctor Max Liebermann's, which means he and acclaimed Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt (Austrian actor Juergen Maurer) are once more on the case. There are any number of suspects to investigate, each with a motive more intricate than the last.

Judy Woodruff Q&a: ‘PBS NewsHour’ Veteran Talks About Her Final Days As Anchor, Her Next Assignment & Why Journalists Should Just “Be Covering The Story, Period”
Image
Judy Woodruff will step away from the PBS NewsHour anchor desk on Friday, ending a chapter as one of the most trusted and well respected figures helming a newscast.

She will be handing the anchor duties to Amna Nawaz and Geoff Bennett, returning the broadcast to a co-anchor format, but Woodruff is not exiting. Instead, she’s embarking on a new assignment, traveling across America to try to make sense of the country’s divisions, which have only worsened in the decade that she has served as anchor. It’s perhaps fitting that she will be doing the assignment for NewsHour, which throughout its run has been dedicated to the type of nuance and in-depth reporting that is meant to inform and enlighten rather than ignite.

Avenue 5 Season 2 Trailer: In Space, No One Can Hear You Groan
Image
HBO has released a new trailer for the second season of its original series, "Avenue 5." The show was created by two-time Emmy Award-winner Armando Iannucci and stars Hugh Laurie ("House") and Josh Gad ("Beauty and the Beast"). If you haven't watched it yet, it's the story set about 40 years in the future aboard an interstellar spaceship. It's owned by clueless billionaire Herman Judd (Gad in a ponytail and some pretty wild outfits), who hired mainly attractive actors and models for his crew, so everyone would look good on the bridge and please the passengers. The ship itself is actually run by a second crew who weren't deemed pretty enough to be seen.

The titular space cruiser, Avenue 5, was supposed to be out on an eight-week cruise, but the death of an engineer and the temporary loss of artificial gravity changed their course. Instead of eight weeks, the ship would...

Sweden’s Svt Orders ‘Whiskey On The Rocks’ From Skyverse Nordic

Sweden’s public service broadcaster Svt has boarded Skyverse Nordic comedy-drama Whiskey On The Rocks as its main commissioning broadcaster. The six-part series is still at script and production development stage and is being billed as a “premium, epic Cold War dramedy special event” directed by Björn Stein (Midnight Sun) and based on an original story from author Jonas Jonasson. It is among the first shows from Skyverse Nordic, which is a subsidiary of Sparkling, the Stockholm-based sister company to Humanoids that Deadline revealed back in May. The show reunites Jonasson with Skyverse boss Patrick Nebout and creative producer Henrik Jansson-Schweizer, who were collectively behind Sweden’s biggest export success, the Oscar-nominated The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared. A Scandinavian and international cast are being sought to play the drama’s protagonists onboard the submarine and in Moscow.

U.K. Culture Committee to Quiz BBC Bosses on Impartiality, License Fee – Global Bulletin
Image
Question Time

The U.K.’s cross-party Dcms Committee, which scrutinizes the spending, policies and administration of the government Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, is set to interrogate BBC bosses on impartiality, the license fee and earnings.

The committee, which is chaired by Julian Knight, is set to convene on Tuesday, Sept. 6 to question BBC director general Tim Davie, BBC chair Richard Sharp and BBC COO Leigh Tavaziva. They will ask questions on topics including how the corporation “plans to remain relevant and effective in the modern media landscape,” “how the BBC’s offering is impacted by a more polarised political atmosphere” and the future of the license fee in light of soaring inflation rates.

Questions about impartiality will be particularly of interest to BBC watchers following a recent lecture by former “Newsnight” host Emily Maitlis at the Edinburgh TV Festival, where she used her platform to suggest the BBC was too objective.

Image
Principal photography is underway near Budapest on “Rise of the Raven,” an epic drama series produced by veteran Canadian producer Robert Lantos’ Serendipity Point Films (“Crimes of the Future”) and Beta Film (“Gomorrah”) that marks the most lavish TV production in Hungary’s history.

Adapted from author Bán Mór’s bestselling novels, the 10-episode series tells the story of the Hungarian warrior Janos Hunyadi, who defeated the Ottoman army in 1456 at the Battle of Belgrade, halting its march across Europe.

Lantos, whose producing credits include “The Sweet Hereafter,” “Johnny Mnemonic” and “Eastern Promises,” spoke exclusively with Variety about a passion project more than a decade in the making. He was joined by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning director Robert Dornhelm and Hungarian directors Attila Szász and Orsi Nagypal, who joined the conversation fresh off shooting an epic battle sequence outside Budapest.

The Hungarian-born Lantos, who was in Cannes this year with David Cronenberg...

Image
MGM’s five-part limited series “Last Light” will make its world premiere at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, kicking off the festival’s 61st edition as the opening screening.

Adapted from Alex Scarrow’s popular novel, this high-throttle drama set during an international oil crisis boasts a cast toplined by Matthew Fox (“Lost”), Joanne Froggat (“Downton Abbey”), and Tom Wlaschiha (“Game of Thrones”), who are all expected to attend.

“We want to start a conversation,” said Rola Bauer, president of MGM International TV Productions. “[The series] brings to light our dependence on oil, reminds us that we must shift away with the utmost urgency….
