King Bee Productions, founded by Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola, has inked a first look deal with Sony Pictures Television.
The multi-year partnership will see King Bee developing and producing globally-targeted scripted content for Sony’s international production group and U.S. studio. The production company’s team includes Lizzie Nastro, who previously worked as head of acquisitions for IFC, and former Vice exec Sam Schlaifler who is joining as VP of development.
Among King Bee’s output is two seasons of “Doll & Em” (HBO and Sky) and feature film “To Dust” starring Matthew Broderick and Geza Rohrig.

Together with the Horizontes Latinos sidebar, the Wip Latam platform and the extensive Latin American presence in the festival’s other sections, the Forum has helped to cement San Sebastian’s reputation as an important bridge to Europe for Latin American industry filmmakers and executives.

Film Independent today announced that the seventh triennial Sloan Film Summit will take place from April 8-10 at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.
Returning after a pandemic-imposed break, the 2022 Summit will celebrate the nationwide Sloan Film Program, bringing together over 150 writers, directors and producers, as well as working scientists and representatives from leading film schools and organizations, who work to bridge the gap between science, technology and popular culture.

Ahead of the American Film Market, Buffalo 8, the Los Angeles-based production, post, distribution and finance outfit, has hired Nikki Stier Justice as Head of Distribution.
Stier Justice previously served as the COO and Head of Production of Good Deed Entertainment, overseeing titles including Loving Vincent, To Dust, and Extra Ordinary for the indie studio. At Buffalo, she will oversee a distribution business that was set up in 2018 to help indie filmmakers filmmakers seeking alternative options for their project releases across aggregation, direct distribution.

As you’re reading this, the 35th Independent Spirit Awards are being held. Oscar will have their say tomorrow evening, but today, it’s the indie films getting their turn! Will this awards show honor the likes of The Farewell, The Lighthouse, Marriage Story, or Uncut Gems? Maybe some combination of them all? We’ll know in a few hours, that’s for sure. The winners of the 2020 Independent Spirit Awards are being announced live during today’s ceremony, hosted for the second year in a row by Aubrey Plaza (fresh off rave reviews from Sundance for her performance in the indie “Black Bear”). Unlike the Oscars where Netflix is the most-nominated studio, the Spirit Awards are dominated in 2020 by A24. The indie distributor boats 18 nominations across four movies: “The Lighthouse,” “Waves,” “The Farewell,” “Uncut Gems,” and “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.” The Safdie brothers’ “Uncut Gems” and Robert Eggers’ “The Lighthouse” lead all movies with five nominations each. Both of these films are nominated for Best Feature along with Terrence Malick’s “A Hidden Life,” Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” and Chinonye Chukwu’s “Clemency.”

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like either Noah Baumbach or Greta Gerwig will take home a screenplay Oscar on Sunday. Baumbach is in third place in our Best Original Screenplay predictions for “Marriage Story,” while Gerwig’s “Little Women” was just dethroned by Taika Waititi‘s “Jojo Rabbit” in Best Adapted Screenplay following the latter’s Writers Guild of America Award and BAFTA triumphs. But the couple could still be part of a different winners’ circle.

In two days, the Film Independent Spirit Awards will be handed out. By now, we all know how different the Spirit Awards are than Oscar. That goes without saying. This year, the Academy Awards largely went in a separate direction, so there’s less crossover than usual. So, that means we can worry less about if these voters will reject/simulate the Academy, and just focus on how the vote might go. I’ve tinkered a bit with my picks, though ultimately I think it could be a really good night for Uncut Gems. Watch out for The Farewell (or Marriage Story) in the top category, while The Lighthouse could end up spoiling in several categories. The night before the Academy Awards, the Film Independent Spirit Awards will be handed out. Obviously, the indie equivalent to the Oscars is not a predictable precursor, but it has another charm to it. Namely, it’s that this is the final chance to cite some of the beloved movies of 2019 that the Academy snubbed. Films that came close to Oscar nominations but missed, as well as ones that never sniffed a nomination, they both compete equally here. Other years have had more flicks that line up with the big boys, but it’s an interesting mix here. In fact, it’s very hard to tell how the Indie Spirit Awards will go this time around, but I’m about to try, that’s for sure. Take a look now at my predictions for the Spirit Awards. Miranda Bailey’s narrative directorial debut “Being Frank” is a comedy about male hypocrisy set in 1992 that dives into many intriguing ideas and issues and gives us a lot to consider. This is commendable — given that many commercial comedies give us nothing to consider at all — but there is a tug-of-war here between her attempt to explore her characters in a very serious way with a consistent emotional basis and the demands of the material as written by Glen Lakin, which is clearly meant to be played as farce most of the time, particularly towards the end.
The first moments of “Being Frank” show high school senior Philip (Logan Miller) doing a practice job interview with his father Frank (Jim Gaffigan), and the way the shots are composed makes us feel Frank’s bullying control over his son; the effect is oppressive and even alienating at first, but to a point.

The Cannes-opening film directed by Oscar-winning Iranian helmer Asghar Farhadi and starring Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem bowed in four locations, grossing $75,000 for an $18,743 average.
The frame’s biggest opening-weekend grosser was the 2019 Oscar Nominated Shorts, this year’s pack of Oscar-nominated short films — in Animated, Live Action and Documentary shorts — in 265 theaters via ShortsTV and Magnolia Pictures. Iranian-born director Asghar Farhadi is among an exclusive group of filmmakers to win the Best Foreign Language Oscar twice. The intersection of grief and faith is a bit complicated, whether in reality or as fiction. Good Deed Ent. has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie dark comedy titled To Dust, the feature directorial debut of Harvard graduate, singer-turned-filmmaker named Shawn Snyder. The film is about a Hasidic cantor's struggle to find religious solace after his wife's untimely death, while secretly obsessing over how her body will decay once buried. He befriends a local community college biology professor, seeking his help to understand what's happening underground. The 17th annual Tribeca Film Festival wrapped its celebration of film April 29 in downtown New York City. Presented by At&T and the Tribeca Film Institute, the 12-day fest concluded with a top prize for “To Dust,” written and directed by Shawn Snyder. “To Dust” was singled out in the narrative category the prestigious Audience Award, voted upon by attendees. The film stars Matthew Broderick and Geza Rohrig, the latter playing a Hasidic cantor obsessed with how his late wife will decompose in the earth. “Mapplethorpe,” directed and written by Ondi Timoner and starring Matt Smith as the titular notorious photographer and artist, was the runner-up for the prize. “I’m both ecstatic and bowled over by this news. Premiering at Tribeca Film Festival has been a dream and a homecoming, as Tribeca Film Institute was one of the earliest supporters of this strangely personal and oddly specific film,” said Snyder in a statement.
