After being announced all the way back in December of 2020, the new anthology series Star Wars: Visions is finally here!
The animated show is being handled by several different veteran Japanese studios and offers tales that take place in a slightly different galaxy far, far away, giving creators the freedom to explore the Star Wars mythos without being tied down to details of the canon.
Episode 3 of the series is entitled “The Twins” and was animated by Studio Trigger, who are also responsible for episode 7, “The Elder” as well as being the force behind popular anime shows such as Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia.
Returning Star Wars to its Japanese roots
“The Twins” stars the English voice talents of Neil Patrick Harris as Karre and Alison Brie as his twin sister called Am.

It's only natural that certain anime appeal more to different demographics. Not every anime that becomes popular in Japan gets the same treatment in regions like the United States and vice versa. These differences in tastes aren't anything unusual by any means. Everyone has their preferences with the media they consume, and anime is no different.
That being said, there are plenty of successful anime titles beloved in America that aren't nearly as popular with Japanese audiences. While different sensibilities could be at play, there are also cases where anime could be made with international audiences in mind. This could allow more titles to capitalize on success from outside their home country. Unfortunately, this may make the series less desirable to its domestic audience.

Sailor Moon is a magical girl anime with a large cast of mostly women and girl characters. Sailor Guardians can only be women, but there are a couple of key male characters, like Tuxedo Mask. Tuxedo Mask's story line is important, but it's not as crucial as the bond between the girls as friends and Sailor Guardians.
New release anime like The Apothecary Diaries focuses on showing women's lives across the class divide, depicting their relationships with each other. Classic anime like Revolutionary Girl Utena combine folkloric magic, epic battles, and the love between the warrior Utena and the witch princess, Anthy. There are amazing anime series that explore themes and sub-genres that Sailor Moon fans would enjoy.

A new report has revealed that Crunchyroll, the anime streaming giant owned by Sony, made a deliberate decision to limit the promotion of Dandadan, a popular anime title from Toho.
The decision was communicated in an internal email by Markus Gerdemann, Crunchyroll’s senior vice president of marketing, who has faced criticism over his management style and strategic decisions.
In October, Gerdemann sent an email to Crunchyroll staff instructing them not to “further lean into the promotion of Dandadan,” citing ongoing acquisition discussions.
This move raised eyebrows within the company and among industry observers, particularly as the show debuted as the second-most-viewed non-English title on Netflix.
Despite its strong performance on a competing platform, Crunchyroll’s apparent sidelining of the series has drawn criticism for potentially undermining its relationship with Toho and the broader anime community.

Crunchyroll, the leading anime streaming platform owned by Sony, has come under scrutiny for its handling of major titles, including One Piece and Dandadan.
A recent report by Bloomberg, which includes comments from current and former employees reveal a series of alleged missteps by Crunchyroll’s senior vice president Markus Gerdemann, leading to dissatisfaction among prominent Japanese licensors and publishers.
Gerdemann, who joined Crunchyroll after a stint in Netflix marketing, has faced internal complaints about his management style.
Two employees filed complaints with human resources, one alleging sexist behavior and another accusing him of creating a hostile work environment.
While Sony investigated the allegations and cleared Gerdemann of sexism, seven current and former employees reported that his leadership has negatively impacted employee morale and the company’s marketing strategy.

There's no doubt that Sailor Moon is a trend-setting anime. It is by no means the first magical girl anime, but it set the standard for so many anime series to follow well beyond the magical girl subgenre. It influenced fantasy, romance, and stories written about and for women in modern anime. Sailor Moon's influence extends even beyond the scope of its audience, into shonen anime and beyond its medium, into cartoons, movies, and fashion.
Naoko Takeuchi had a very specific vision when she wrote Sailor Moon. There were certain tropes in anime that she wanted to unpack, subvert, and add her own touch to, and audiences loved her treatment. Her influence on anime had a ripple effect that continues on in present day anime releases.

Since shonen anime is aimed at young male audiences, these stories tend to focus not just on action and competition, but also growth. Young viewers need fictional role models who show them how to grow up, from training hard to achieve great things all the way to maturing emotionally, for example. Also, when a shonen anime focuses on character growth, that gives the narrative a strong sense of progress and makes the heroes more dynamic.
Not all shonen anime do this some shonen series focus more on the world-building and may feature static leads who change everyone around them. But in plenty of other cases, the protagonist and perhaps a few of their friends will grow, evolve, and become better people over time. That includes fighters who train and practice to become stronger, ordinary people who gain the maturity, responsibility, and perspective needed to become all grown up. And even...

Shonen anime is a demographic aimed at young male viewers, hence the name. While there are no absolute rules on how shonen should be written and presented, shonen trends towards male pursuits of competition, action, and friendly rivalries of all kinds. This also means the protagonists are usually teenage males, such as Naruto Uzumaki and Tanjiro Kamado. Still, there's ample room for female leads in shonen as well, especially since more girls than ever like watching shonen anime alongside the boys.
Female leads in shonen are in the minority, yet there are still plenty of them to love as they embark on incredible anime adventures. Some of these shonen girls are action stars, while others are the heartfelt lead of a comedy, romance, or drama shonen anime that will speak to all audiences on a deep level. Derederes are anime character types that are particularly common in romance and comedy anime. They are lovestruck characters, who wear their heart on their sleeves. Deredere characters have no guile; they make their feelings extremely plain, and they can be quite cutesy about their romantic interests.
Deredere characters can get taxing, especially if they fawn over their love interest and put them on a pedestal too much. Their situations can get quite pathetic, fast. Though, there are some well-balanced deredere characters who are plain about their feelings in the sense that they are good communicators, and they are confident enough to own their feelings. A good deredere character won't debase themselves to get romantic attention they're just perfectly sincere.

The creators of Studio Trigger's popular Kill la Kill anime series have made an intriguing case for the show's blatant fanservice, arguing that it's an essential component of both the medium and the show itself for the fate of humanity.
Japanese outlet Febri spoke to Kill la Kill writer Kazuki Nakashima and director Hiroyuki Imaishi. As Nakashima joked that bathtub peeking scenes were probably off-limits these days except for a good reason, like a character's life being at stake, he outlined his view on fanservice somewhat more seriously. "We're making a commercial work, so we want the audience to see it. I don't care if they say, 'I don't get it,' but I don't want them to feel unnecessarily uncomfortable. On the other hand, if we make the work completely sterile, people's immunity will be weakened, and they will all die. Therefore, there is a way of thinking...

Little Witch Academia is a charming, compelling coming-of-age fantasy story that beautifully lives up to the magical girl and magic high school tropes. Released first as two short films back in 2013, Little Witch Academia was picked up as a television animated series in 2017, skyrocketing the franchise as a prominent magical girl anime. The show’s unique animation, lovable characters, and intriguing plot made Little Witch Academia stand out as one of the best anime of the 2010s.

Live-action adaptations of anime face challenges that can lead to infamously bad adaptations, but some have overcome these obstacles and become hits. Certain anime series, like Spy X Family and K-On!, would lose their best comedic moments or require actors with musical abilities, making live-action adaptations logistically difficult. Some anime series, such as Little Witch Academia and My Hero Academia, would draw unfair comparisons or lose their distinct visual identity when adapted to live action.
The creative process of adapting anime to live-action presents certain pitfalls that are best avoided for several popular anime franchises. These challenges have led to infamously bad live-action adaptations of popular anime. At the same time, some of these live-action adaptations have overcome such obstacles to become runaway hits. Nevertheless, there are still some anime series that should never be adapted into live-action. These series absolutely will not work in any medium other than anime.

Frieren takes place in the aftermath of a Lord of the Rings-like epic, in which a group of warriors spent ten years battling the Demon King and saving the world by each other's sides. However, decades later, the mortal members of the party have aged, while the titular elf hasn't. The anime explores Frieren's unique understanding of time, mortality,...

Everyone loves a good romance, but nothing beats platonic love and support. Positive female friendships are the oft-unsung hero of a good story. Shonen anime particularly has many examples of amazing friendships between guys, but shonen and shojo have supportive relationships between girls and women that last through maturity and life changes.
Bonus points are definitely awarded if the female friendship passes the Bechdel test: at least two women talk to each other and discuss something other than a man. Best friends are one of the closest consistent relationships a person can have in their life, and they make for great deuteragonists or well-crafted side characters in anime.

The animated anthology series "Star Wars: Visions," which debuted in 2021, may be the best way to explore the franchise's vast and complicated mythology, better even than legacy shows like "The Book of Boba Fett" and "Obi-Wan Kenobi." Every one of the "Star Wars" movies has featured a lot of background detail, often depicting space aliens of all walks of life casually going about their business, oblivious to the adventures that our heroes may be going through at any given moment. In presenting out-of-timeline animated shorts, "Visions" has the leeway to look into the cracks and explore what life is like in the "Star Wars" universe outside the tiresome saga of the Skywalkers. It has only been through expanded universe fiction, and shows like "Visions," that Starwoids have been able to see what non-soldiers are doing in wartime.
The first seasons of "Visions" featured shorts exclusively from Japanese animation studios, including...

Sailor Moon may be the most famous magical girl anime out there, but it’s far from the only excellent anime for fans to check out. Magical girl anime is one of the oldest and most popular genres in the medium, with its earliest entry dating back to the 1960s. Its most recognizable concept centers around a young girl being granted or discovering within herself considerable magic power, using it to fight evil of varying degrees of threat. Sailor Moon popularized the concept of transformation sequences that the hero uses to access her abilities.
When Sailor Moon first hit the airwaves in 1992, (running until 1997 when the manga also ended) it proved extremely popular, achieving success with audiences all over the world. It was notable for combining elements of the magical girl genre with those of classic tokusatsu and Super Sentai shows. The best magical girl shows feature compelling everygirl heroes,...

The delicate dance between fire and ice spins out of control in highly-anticipated animated film “Promare” (2019). Director Imaishi Hiroyuki and well-beloved animation Studio Trigger (“Little Witch Academia”) have blessed the film with their characteristic low-frame, extravagant poses, sharply defined character designs, and of course — its self-indulgent giant mecha machines. While the film is sure to please loyal fans, “Promare” fails – at the same time – in truly creating something new, and instead falls back on a hackneyed script sadly telling of the film’s low budget.
“Promare” is distributed by Gkids in the United States, and Anime Limited in the UK. “Promare” opens in UK cinemas on 26th November (dubbed) with subbed screenings from 29th November

Attention all Netflix subscribers: there’s a whole bunch of content leaving the streaming service in October, and a number of great horror movies have been marked for departures.
And so it goes, with each month that passes, the Powers That Be over at Netflix begin introducing a suite of new content and, in doing so, withdraw (or outright cancel) some of the titles currently on the platform.
Rarely is it perfectly balanced, but it certainly gives viewers an added incentive to stand up and take notice of the new movies and TV shows coming their way. Spoilers: big names for October 2019 include Paul Rudd comedy Living With Yourself, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, Men in Black II, Scream 2, Superman Returns, Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen.
But as Scream 2 arrives, Scream 4 must leave. It’s by no means the only notable horror movie set to depart in October,...

What’s not to love about Little Witch Academia? From the quirky witches to the trouble they get into, the anime films and TV series are adorable and fun, and I was super excited to be a part of the girl’s mischief when I heard about the game. Yet the beat ‘em up adventure title, Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time, wasn’t quite what I’d been expecting.
It’s the first day of summer holidays at the school for witches, Luna Nova Magical Academy. Protagonist Akko is already in trouble. Accidentally discovering a hidden passageway, and touching the glowing clock inside ends as well as you might expect. A Groundhog Day situation ensues, where the same 24 hours repeat themselves. Luckily, those that enter the secret Horologium Chamber are aware of the loop, giving Akko and her friends a chance to get time back on track.
The premise...
