15 Best TV Shows Like Downton Abbey
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

For viewers whose tastes run more to Masterpiece Classic than "Real Housewives" (no judgment), "Downton Abbey" is pretty much the ultimate comfort watch. Julian Fellowes' historical drama follows the aristocratic Crawleys from the day after the sinking of the Titanic into the Roaring Twenties, showcasing all the social changes experienced by the family, as well as their extensive staff downstairs. Their high-class problems provide the basis for many of the show's episodes, offering a lens to view the historical period peppered with deliciously aristocratic drama.

"Downton Abbey" ran for six seasons on ITV and PBS, earning 16 Emmy Awards and dozens more nominations. The show was such a success that it earned two feature film sequels -- "Downton Abbey" and the vibrant and emotional "Downton Abbey: A New Era" -- with a third, "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale," slated for release...

Barbie Movie Cast and Character Guide
Image
Margot Robbie leads the critically acclaimed Barbiemovie, and it features plenty of notable faces in the supporting cast as well. For the most part, the characters are directly inspired by toys that have been released over the years or are original Barbie movie characters. Of course, this means that the long-beloved Mattel toys Barbie and Ken are not just two people.

Instead, the Truman Show-esque Barbieland is populated with plenty of Barbies and Kens. Still, each character has its place in the story, and they all help make this version of Barbieland vibrant and memorable. Most of these characters are portrayed by familiar faces for fans to look for.

Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on March 7, 2025: Following the smash success of the first live-action Barbie movie in 2023, all eyes are on Greta Gerwig as she works toward making a sequel. While news on this front is still scarce, fans know...

A Wicked Deleted Scene Reveals The Truth About Glinda's Relationships
Image
In "Wicked: Part One" — which came out in November of 2024, crushed the box office, and ultimately earned multiple Academy Award nominations — Galinda Upland, played by Oscar nominee Ariana Grande-Butera, arrives at Shiz University and is immediately, well, "popular." She's also immediately flanked by two loyal cohorts, students Pfannee and ShenShen (played respectively by Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James), but how do they meet in the first place? In an extremely brief deleted scene from Jon M. Chu's blockbuster film, we see that, right as Galinda gets to Shiz, she reunites with Pfannee and ShenShen. Sort of.

Galinda, for her part, is approached by Pfannee and ShenShen with absolutely no idea who they are, though Pfannee immediately explains that they met at a different school. After they all do a little twirling routine to jog Galinda's memory, Galinda hugs them both and asks how they are "truthfully." ("I've been through,...

The ‘High School Musical’ Story of Connor Swindells
Image
“I’m such a pessimistic arse,” Connor Swindells tells The Hollywood Reporter.

The British star (so the emphasis is on the “ar” in “arse”) is discussing his start in the industry with the global Netflix hit Sex Education. “I always think the worst and think, ‘No one’s going to see anything,'” he says about being unable to predict the show’s success. But it helps, being a pessimistic arse, he adds. “If you become conscious of an audience, you set yourself up to fail in many respects.”

The 28-year-old has the world at his feet. Life after Sex Education has been fruitful. He nabbed the lead role in Steven Knight’s (Peaky Blinders) military drama Sas Rogue Heroes and later, a job alongside Will Ferrell in a small production called Barbie.

Up next, Swindells takes on the role of legendary 14th-century bailiff Albrecht Gessler, whose brutal rule led...

Amazon's My Lady Jane Screws With History
Image
What a time for fans of TV shows that fall under the umbrella of “History, But Make It Cheeky.” Series such as Mary & George, The Buccaneers, The Great, The Serpent Queen, and Harlots have made themselves right at home en masse, dramatizing both obscure and well-known stories for contemporary audiences. When executed well, they offer a sprightly, self-aware counterpoint to traditional, deeply earnest costume dramas; think of them as scions of the marriage between Masterpiece Theatre and A Knight’s Tale.

Loved Watching Netflix’s Bridgerton? Here Are 5 Other Binge-Worthy Period Dramas To Add To Your Watchlist ( Photo Credit – IMDb )

‘Bridgerton’ Has a New Francesca — Meet Hannah Dodd

Hannah Dodd didn’t mean to audition for Bridgerton. Then again, she didn’t mean not to.

It was the spring of 2022 and Dodd was responding to a casting call. She had “no idea” what the project was — the title and character name were kept tightly under wraps — only that she would be playing a Regency-era maiden. And while most auditions require multiple scenes, here she was only asked to perform one: a scene where she would play a guest at a ball. Normally, Dodd would do a ton of...

Bridgerton Season 3 Cast: Meet Lady Arnold, Lord Debling & More New Characters
Image
How do the makers of Bridgerton keep a fandom as dedicated as theirs guessing? How does the Netflix show surprise a core of fans who are so intimately familiar with Julia Quinn’s source books that they’re anticipating every blush and ball before it even gets to the screen?

One solution, as has happened in season three, is to play with the established order of things. Though Benedict Bridgerton’s romance follows on from that of his brother Anthony’s in Quinn’s book series, the TV show has (rightly!) vaulted over that to first show the love story between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington.

Their other answer? Invention. In addition to TV-only characters Madame Delacroix, Will and Alice Mondrich and Queen Charlotte herself, a new raft of invented-for-the-show characters appear in season three. Here they all are, along with info on the actors playing them, plus a couple...

Netflix’s Obsession Cast: Meet the Characters
Image
This four-part Netflix series isn’t the first time that Josephine Hart’s 1991 novel Damage has been adapted for screen. In 1992, celebrated French director Louis Malle made a feature film of Hart’s book that welcomed Jeremy Irons, Juliette Binoche, Miranda Richardson, Peter Stomare and Rupert Graves to this exploration of erotic obsession. The film earned Richardson a Best Actress nomination among many others at that year’s Academy Awards.

This serialised version was created by playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm with writer Benji Walters, and directed by Ordinary Love, Good Vibrations and Cherry Bomb‘s Lisa Barrow D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn, updates the action to the modern day and remoulds the characters somewhat. Richard Armitage plays successful surgeon Will, husband to Ingrid and father to Jay and Sally, while Charlie Muphy’s character Anna Barton is expanded to explore her response to the fallout of the story’s scandalous central affair.

Lord of the Rings Cast: Where Are They Now?
Image
Since the trilogy's epic conclusion in 2003, many of the cast members of The Lord of the Rings have continued to have prominent careers, but what exactly have they been up to? Dominating the box office and the awards slate for three straight years, Peter Jackson's adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's novels put big-budget fantasy on the map and showed that genre films were viable Oscar contenders. One of the most successful aspects of the trilogy was its brilliant casting, and if the actors weren't already stars before they arrived in Middle-earth, they eventually became household names thanks to their roles in The Lord of the Rings.

The Lord of the Rings movies feature a rich mix of veterans and fresh faces, and all sorts of disciplines are represented, from Ian McKellan's theatrical expertise to Andy Serkis's pantomime. The movies achieved many effects practically, like how they made the Hobbits appear small,...

‘The Serpent Queen,’ Starring Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici, Doesn’t Need Its ‘Twists’ to Work: TV Review
Image
If you were to see the trailer or basically any promotional material for “The Serpent Queen,” Starz’s new series about the infamous life of one Catherine de Medici, you’d be forgiven for assuming it’s a showcase for Samantha Morton in a historical drama with modern touches, following in the footsteps of her recent turn in “Harlots.” Even its arresting opening credits sequence, which sees Morton stride to a throne to a heavy guitar lick as snakes slither out and toward her, suggests a show preoccupied with being Edgy and Different — a show that would consider itself to be not like Starz’s many other historical drama girls, as it were.

However: as adapted from Leonie Frieda’s biography by Justin Haythe, this perception proves to be only somewhat the case. In fact, the first few episodes of “The Serpent Queen” — which premieres Sunday, Sept. 11 — feature Morton sparingly,...
