Henry Cavill's Voltron Live-Action Movie Gets Major Filming & Release Update
Image
The live-action Voltron adaptation starring Henry Cavill, Sterling K. Brown, and Rita Ora has just announced a filming update that is promising for the movie's prompt release, reportedly exclusively on streaming via Amazon Prime Video. Voltron originated with the beloved '80s animated series of the same name, which has seen several continuations and spinoffs in the decades since. Most recently, Netflix and DreamWorks delivered Voltron: Legendary Defender, which comprises eight seasons released between 2016 and 2018.

The basic premise of Voltron is of a giant robot made up of several combined suits, piloted by a team that sets out to fight an advancing alien army. Part of the trend of other live-action remakes and upcoming live-action anime adaptations, Voltron's live-action movie is moving forward. While the idea has been in development for decades, the current version of the project was announced in 2022. The time since then may seem discouraging, but a...

10 Iconic Anime Characters Who Are Completely Different in the Manga
Image
The following contains spoilers. Proceed with caution.

When it comes to anime adaptations of manga, some changes to the characters' personalities and backgrounds are both necessary and understandable. Sometimes an old story just needs a bit of updating, while some mangaka use the animated adaptation of their work to rewrite a character. But in the case of these anime characters, they might as well be entirely new people since they bear so little resemblance to their manga selves.

These anime characters may look, act and sound like how they were in their source manga, but a lot changed during the translation from print to animation. As bad and controversial as this may sound, these changes were actually pretty compelling. Whether they were heroes or villains or somewhere in between, these manga characters benefited a lot from the animation crew's creative divergences from the original work.

10 Best Mecha Anime of the 2010s, Ranked
Image
In the 2010s, the Mecha anime genre didn't have as much popularity as it had in the '90s or 2000s. However, that's not to say that the mecha subgenre was stagnant. Mecha may not have been as popular as newer Isekai anime like Sword Art Online, but there were still great series that were released around the same time. These mecha anime would leave a lasting legacy that is just now being felt.

The 2010s provided a stellar list of anime for mecha anime fans to sink their teeth into. Franchises like Gundam will continue to reinvent themselves in ways that subvert their classic tropes. Plenty of new series would enter the fray, leaving behind legions of fans. While these titles still feel recent, they help pave the way for the influx of new mecha series that have wowed fans today.

‘The Witcher: Sirens Of The Deep’ Netflix Review: Geralt & Jaskier’s Aquatic Adventure Is Boring
Image
Humans are obsessed with space and the unimaginable horrors that potentially lie in the vastness of the void, but we don’t give an equal amount of attention to the depths of the water bodies that surround us. I think that there are two contradictory reasons for that. On the one hand, since it’s right in our backyard, it doesn’t feel as mysterious or unreachable. On the other hand, it’s actually daunting that something as scary as the oceans and seas is sitting around us with the ability to engulf us in a matter of seconds. This mixture of skepticism and lack of appreciation is sort of reflected in the ocean’s cinematic depiction as well, along with the fact that shooting on water, real or fake, is really hard. The first 3 Pirates of the Caribbean films are fantastic, and the last 2 entries are absolutely atrocious. Aquaman is excellent,...

Max's Latest Removal Is a Bad Sign for HBO Streaming App's Future
Image
The latest slew removals on the Max streaming service is a bad sign for the app and the future of animation.

Over the last few years, audiences have quickly realized the unreliability of streaming services like Netflix in maintaining their library of movies and shows. One of the latest examples was Voltron: Legendary Defender leaving the pioneering streaming app.

However, Warner Bros. Discovery's Max - home of HBO - is one service that's been bleeding the most. The ongoing purge of children's cartoons has only worsened, with the streaming app seemingly going through a troubling new rebranding.

The Final Spider-Verse Film Has Newly Announced Directors, And We Have Questions
Image
The "Spider-Verse" movies are revolutionary works of animation, having started a new trend that's allowed other directors and animators to experiment with 3D, using 2D textures, and exploring different stylizations to make movies that don't all look hyper-realistic. They are also just damn good superhero movies that challenged what we think a Spider-Man movie could do, what a superhero movie could do, and even helped perfect the idea of the multiverse on film. They show that animation really is where the superhero genre thrives the most, capturing the elasticity, the dynamic action, and sheer imagination of comic books. And yet it is also a franchise that, despite its massive multiversal spectacle, isn't afraid to slow down and give space to quiet moments, like having two characters share a heart-to-heart while looking at the sunset.

Production on movies like these is massive and overwhelming. The character of Spider-Punk took animators three years to make.

Henry Cavill's Live-Action Voltron Movie Has Officially Started Filming With BTS Photo
Image
The Voltron movie starring Henry Cavill has officially begun filming, with the start of production celebrated by a new behind-the-scenes photo. Based on the classic animated series that features a team of space pilots whose robots join together to create the show’s titular super robot, plans for a live-action adaptation of the property have been in place as far back as 2005. However, after languishing in development and passing through multiple hands, the long-anticipated project found fresh life when a new attempt was announced in 2022 and sparked a bidding war from rival studios, ultimately landing at Amazon MGM Studios.

Taking to Instagram, Voltron producer Bob Koplar recently celebrated the commencement of filming by sharing a behind-the-scenes look at the film’s production logo. Featured on the side of a camera, the movie’s logo is reminiscent of the original Voltron logo first created for the original 1984 animated series and sees...

Voltron: Legendary Defender Is About to Leave Netflix, Marking a Major Loss for Fans
Image
Netflix is saying goodbye to Voltron: Legendary Defender on December 7th, a departure that has left fans reeling. The beloved DreamWorks series, which revitalized the Voltron franchise, has been a staple on the platform since its debut in 2016. The removal is because the licensing agreement between DreamWorks Animation and Netflix is expiring. While discussions for renewal are ongoing, nothing has been finalized, meaning fans might soon lose their convenient streaming access to all eight action-packed seasons of the series.

This potential loss is the end of an era for fans who have come to associate Voltron with Netflix. Despite the first six seasons being available on Amazon Prime for purchase, the final two seasons will become harder to access. With Voltron: Legendary Defender not being a Netflix-produced or Netflix original show, its licensing expiration could mean that it might migrate to another streaming service, a move that could lose viewers.

Voltron: Cast, Story & Everything We Know About The Live-Action Movie
Image
The classic '80s animated series Voltron is coming to the big screen in an all-new live-action Hollywood adaptation, and here's everything to know about the upcoming movie. The American cartoon series debuted in 1984 and used footage from the Japanese anime series Beast King Go-Lion (dubbed into English). The basic premise concerns a group of space explorers who pilot a gigantic robot known as Voltron, as they take on various threats throughout the galaxy. Taking advantage of the giant robot craze of the '80s, Voltron quickly became a multimedia franchise across the globe.

Muscling into the territory of franchises like Transformers, the original Voltron series ran for 124 episodes, but things didn't stop there. Voltron would return in several spinoff shows in the '90s and 2000s before enjoying an 8-season run (between 2016 and 2018) in Voltron: Legendary Defender. Even though comic books, video games, and an abundance of toys helped to expand the lore,...

December 7 Is an Upsetting Day for Voltron Fans
Image
Netflix has shared disappointing news for fans of the Voltron franchise. The streaming service's critically acclaimed Voltron: Legendary Defender reboot will be removed from the platform next week.

DreamWorks and Netflix's Voltron: Legendary Defender premiered in 2016 and released 78 episodes over 8 seasons. The final season of the animated series aired on Netflix in December 2018. Earlier this year, it was reported that the Voltron reboot series would be departing from Netflix, with the official Voltron Instagram account responding and saying, "Discussions are ongoing. When we know, you'll know." It appears as if negotiations to keep the show on Netflix fell through, and it remains uncertain where (or even if) fans will have a way to legally stream the series in the future. Voltron: Legendary Defender will be removed from Netflix on Dec. 6.

Henry Cavill's Live-Action 'Voltron' Adds Sterling K. Brown & Rita Ora

Like Voltron itself, the cast for the upcoming movie is assembling nicely. After years of attempting to get a live-action Voltron movie into theaters, the project is finally making progress at Amazon MGM under the direction of Rawson Marshall Thurber, best known for movies like Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and Red Notice. The fighting robot anime series Voltron is leaving Netflix after eight years of calling the streaming service its exclusive home.

Voltron: Legendary Defender was the latest adaptation of the classic space-faring Toei anime, following a group of teenagers who are transported to Earth to fight in an intergalactic war being the steering wheel of giant robotic animal-shaped ships.

Starring the likes of Arcane's Josh Keaton and directed by Lauren Montgomery (who is working on the new Avatar: The Last Airbender movie), Legendary Defender ran for eight seasons between 2016 and 2018 all exclusive to Netflix.

Image
Henry Cavill, who played Superman in The Dceu, aka the "SnyderVerse," is set to take to the skies again... in a giant Robot Lion.

THR reports that the Man of Steel and The Witcher star has signed on to play a lead role in Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action Voltron movie.

Cavill joins previously-cast newcomer Daniel Quinn-Toye, who previously appeared in Badults and served as Tom Holland’s understudy in Romeo & Juliet on the West End this spring. No details on either of their characters have been disclosed, but we assume they will play two of the five Voltron pilots.

The project is being helmed by Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber, and is based on the Japanese sci-fi show Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger Xv. World Events would later edit and dub the series as a syndicated show, naming it Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which ran in the mid '80s.

Giant mecha TV show Voltron is getting its own live-action film – and now the Man of Steel himself, Henry Cavill, has agreed to star in it.

It’s been just over a decade since Cavill made his debut as Superman, and in the years since, he’s adopted a few other memorable roles, including Geralt the Witcher in the Netflix show, and fist-cocking, moustachioed assassin in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, not to mention doing a turn or two as Sherlock Holmes in Netflix’s Enola Holmes films.

The actor has also turned up in a couple of Guy Ritchie films...

Live-Action Voltron Reboot Reportedly Greenlit at Amazon MGM Studios
Image
The live-action reboot of Voltron has officially been greenlit by Amazon MGM Studios. The animated franchise, which initially debuted in 1984, has been quite lucrative, producing a variety of television shows over the years, the most recent being Netflix's Voltron: Legendary Defender. Despite all these new additions and specials, a live-action adaptation has been in the wind for a while.

In fact, it was reported in 2022 that Rawson Marshall Thurber, director of the hit film Red Notice, had been assigned to write and direct the live-action Voltron film. However, it was still in the development stage, so many speculated it might even be canceled, especially given the complexity involved in producing these projects.

Voltron | Amazon MGM reportedly the home for live action movie
Rawson Marshall Thurber
The long-in-the-works Voltron movie has reportedly taken a step forward, with Amazon MGM said to have the rights and Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber signed up.

Crikey, we hope that if the Earth ever is in peril, Voltron can come to our aid quicker than he can get his long-gestating movie project off the ground. A fresh report from Jeff Sneider today claims that Amazon MGM has won the bidding rights to secure the live action Voltron project which comes with Red Notice director, Rawson Marshall Thurber attached.

This news is an exact copy of a story we covered all the way back in 2022, however, so we’re not sure what’s been going on in the last two years (although we have a good idea). We’d imagine that last year’s Hollywood strikes probably put paid to Voltron's momentum, but it seems that things are once again...

‘X-Men ‘97’ is a Nostalgic Marvel of Animated Television
Image
It’s easy to forget about the X-Men in a world where the Avengers have dominated the box office for over a decade. Despite both teams being introduced to the world with their comic books in 1963, the Avengers always seemed to edge ahead in popular culture. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is the second highest grossing movie of all time with $2.7 billion, and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ is the closest X-Men film to that success with $746 million.

The debate over which team is better may never end, but ‘X-Men ‘97’ provides a strong argument for fans on the mutants’ side. The ten-episode Disney+ series picks up right after the events of ‘X-Men: The Animated Series,’ which ran from 1992 to 1997. Episodes release weekly, and the first three are streaming now. “She got the real deal instead”: Avatar: The Last Airbender Didn’t Expect 1 Harry Potter Actor to Actually Join the Show After Basing a Major Villain on Him
Image
The voice actor chosen for a beloved villain in Avatar: The Last Airbender was originally picked because he reminded the creators of another iconic villainous performance.

It’s pretty amazing, how the casting director for Avatar: The Last Airbender actually got Jason Isaacs to voice Zhao! This wasn’t just about getting a famous actor; it meant getting the exact person who inspired the character. Isaacs’ performance really captures Zhao’s ruthlessness, making him a serious threat to Aang and his friends.

Zhao begins as a top officer and later becomes a strong Admiral in the Fire Nation Navy. He’s driven by a desire for glory and conquest, who’s ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen.

“Why is one magician better than another”: Bryan Konietzko Turned Down Nickelodeon’s Demand to Make Avatar: The Last Airbender More Like Harry Potter
Image
Avatar: The Last Airbender has its fans, but the show is particularly popular with fans and writers of fantasy fiction for its simple yet unique take on the elemental-based magic system. Bending, as it is called in the show, is often referred to as a prime example of a hard magic system, distinct from the kind of magic one sees in other fantasy stories like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.

Toph, from Avatar: The Last Airbender

The creators of the show revealed what was expected of them initially, and how they decided to design their world. Different and distinct from the usual Western Fantasies, the show drew from a myriad of sources, focusing on Asian philosophies to populate their world with concepts and ideas, while also deciding to make a magic system that makes sense to the audience.

"A Huge Impact": Across The Spider-Verse Director Admits Anime's Massive Influence
Image
Anime subtly infiltrated Western animation, influencing creators like Dos Santos organically. Dos Santos credits anime for becoming part of his artistic DNA, shaping his work. Dragon Ball creator Toriyama's influence transcended borders, reaching artists worldwide.

In a recent interview with Polygon Comics - Vox Media's comics news site - Joaquim Dos Santos, the co-director of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse, spoke in depth about how anime - including Dragon Ball - not only influenced his storytelling style, and visual focus, but also weighed in on how he conceptualized his work - especially regarding Across the Spider-Verse.

The world experienced an irreplaceable loss with the sudden and tragic death of Dragon Ball's creator Akira Toriyama. The passing of the legendary mangaka drew massive attention and touching tributes to the tremendous influence of his works on the global development of the anime industry and beyond. More Than a Year After Launch, Netflix’s Ad Plan Still Missing Several Popular Movies and Shows
Image
Netflix says its ad-supported plan includes “the vast majority” of TV shows and movies available on the standard no-ads tiers — but more than a year after the streamer introduced the cheaper option, several popular titles remain unavailable to customers with the ad plan.

Most recently, Netflix customers noticed that Eli Roth’s horror film “Thanksgiving” (pictured above), added Feb. 17 for subscribers on ad-free tiers, is unavailable on the ad plan. The service notes that the slasher pic — currently at the No. 3 spot on Netflix’s top 10 movies in the U.S. — is not available to members on the ad plan because of licensing restrictions.

“While the vast majority of TV shows and movies are available on an ad-supported plan, a small number are not due to licensing restrictions,” the streamer says in an article on its help site. “These titles will appear with a lock icon when you search or browse Netflix.
