Maybe I should have taken heed of the relative low rating that the 2017 action thriller "Cops and Robbers" had snagged here on IMDb before I sat down to watch it. But I figured an action movie with Michael Jai White and Tom Berenger couldn't be all that bad.
But it was. Boy, was this movie from writer and director Scott Windhauser a swing and a miss.
Not only was the storyline generic and predictable, but it also felt incredibly clumsy and amateurish. I mean, some of the actors and actresses didn't even seem to believe in the project, and it was showing in their performances on the screen. The whole movie permeated with a very low budget feel, and it wasn't working in favor of the movie as a whole.
The character gallery in Scott Windhauser's "Cops and Robbers" was for the lack of better works far from interesting. I didn't care one bit about the characters in the movie as they milled about stumbling to and from.
As for the effects in the movie, well again we are well within the amateur range here; especially the weapons and when said weapons were fired. That was just laughably bad.
This is definitely not a movie that I will be returning to a second time. Nor is it a movie that I would recommend you waste your time, money and effort on.
My rating of "Cops and Robbers" lands on a three out of ten stars.

I loved Michael Jai White in every movie hes been in and the guy was in great shape
His kung fu moves and his great acting made all his movies really good.
But you know when an actor is all washed up , is when they play in these awful movies , bad acting bad directing .I mean I honestly could have made a better movie with the same lousy actors.
Right from the beginning you know this is going to be a flop bank robber has a gun on Michael and instead of Michael taking the gun away from him , the bank robber looks away for no apparent reason and then Michael takes his gun out.Like really the movie is full of weird ideas and you just know that Michael must be hard up to play in this one.
Michael White has gotten fat and that might be one reason no one wants him . Just like Steven Seagal he goes from top notch movies to really bad movies.
I mean when you're all washed up just quit , why bother ? you just make yourselves look like fools.I guess when you're hard up you take whatever you can get, sad.
But a man's gotta eat right.
Did you know Steven Seagal and Michael Jai White played in the same awesome movie called Asian Connection. They have really fallen since then!
Michael Jai White and Quinton Jackson grew up together. Now White is a police hostage negotiator and Jackson is a bank robber with hostages. He gets White as his negotiator and makes some tough demands... and revenge on White.
It's a not particularly distinguished example of the 'negotiator' movie, intended as star turns for the leads, shot in a foreboding light, with overly dramatic music that clearly is intended to let the audience know that the stakes are high. Unfortunately, the constant level reduces everything to the same level, and there's little rhythm to the story telling. There are lots of closeups and tight, claustrophobic shots that make this dull in its unceasing panic.

So I gave this movie 7/10 because I thought the storyline was excellent. There were some good or at least decent performances but for the most part the acting was terrible. I've never seen many of the actors in anything so it's possible that they were extras, low budget actors, or actors who didn't have a lot of experience. This is fine, I'm all for giving people an opportunity. I'm just sorry that the storyline seems to be underappreciated based on the low ratings. This film could have been 10 out of 10 had there been more experienced actors. I love Michael Jai White, always have, and I really like Tom Berenger but I think a movie is only as good as the directing and it's acting. So if I'm going to put blame anywhere it would be on those two items -- the directing and the acting. Also, the editing could have really used some work.
Don't even bother watching. Tom Berenger should be massively embarrassed that he was even in this farce, Michael Jai White makes Andy Dick seem like a Thespian.
