Usually, when a filmmaker knocks it out of the park, either critically or commercially, it is assumed that they will level up with their next project. But, after directing the modern classic Mad Max: Fury Road, director George Miller made an equally ambitious film at a third of the cost. Instead of shooting in the deserts of Namibia and nearly losing his mind, he filmed Three Thousand Years of Longing in the relative security of studios. However, the movie didn't work at the box office, despite having earned mostly positive reviews and shown signs of becoming a future cult classic. It's soon going to be available on Prime Video for...

The Final Cut, released in 2004, is one of Robin Williams‘s more serious but forgettable works. The movie, rated at 37% on Rotten Tomatoes, has long annoyed critics and audiences alike for its uneven pacing and middling plot. Even though the film presents an intriguing premise at first, The Final Cut quickly slows down to a tedious roll that refuses to get out of second gear.
Despite all its faults, however, The Final Cut has some hold over the audience, making it a sleeper cult classic in certain movie circles. It’s initial droll pacing and half-baked idea, when revisited with a forgiving eye, unfolds as a layered and intimate drama told on a small scale [Haphazard Stuff].
As the world mourns the great actor and comedian on the 11th anniversary of his passing, it’s time to review The Final Cut as the underrated gem that it is.

James Gunn’s Superman has become a major turning point for DC Studios, and I’d like the momentum to keep going, even after its release. David Corenswet emerged as our new Man of Steel, effortlessly, despite the hate. And this rebooted universe, which is currently in its Phase 1, ‘Gods and Monsters’ arc, signals a strong start ahead.
The positive early buzz and huge box office numbers have all materialized due to Gunn’s creative vision. I am hoping that he returns for a sequel, but assuming he steps away to focus on other Dcu projects, I believe these five directors could absolutely take his spot to direct Superman’s next flight.

While older males are entertained by the Brad Pitt-led sports drama F1 this weekend, Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon remake provided counter-programming to family audiences, hitting a massive milestone at the worldwide box office. The movie has passed the $450 million mark worldwide after completing two full weeks of release in theaters, and is on track to pass the half-billion mark in the next week or so. How to Train Your Dragon marks DreamWorks Animation’s first-ever live-action remake, after Disney cornered the market for over a decade, recently delivering Lilo & Stitch.
With $199 million domestically and another $254 million from overseas markets, the movie’s cumulative global haul now stands at a fantastic $454 million. By comparison, the original animated How to Train Your Dragon grossed nearly $500 million worldwide in 2010, while the sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2, made over $600 million globally in 2014. It would have been a ludicrous scene if it hadn’t been so dangerous. John Powell, the composer behind Universal’s new live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon and Wicked, was wearing an ill-fitting gas mask awkwardly over his glasses, not keeping the smoke out at all, and fumbling around his property, trying to do anything he could to save it from the incoming inferno.
And yet, the most present thing in his mind was modulating a certain musical cue for the Dragon score that he had been working on a few of hours earlier.
This was early January, and the Palisades Fire in Los Angeles had just struck. Powell, one of the biggest composers working, was in the middle of Dragon and initially paid no mind to the warnings. After all, he had lived in the Palisades for over 20 years, had seen fires start and be put out,...

George Miller has one of the most brilliantly bonkers filmographies in the ‘biz. Yes, this is the guy who gave us five Mad Max movies, including unhinged all-timer Fury Road, and who unleashed lust-fuelled devilry in The Witches Of Eastwick. And yet, nestled in his filmography you’ll find much more wholesome fare – notably, the Happy Feet movies (animated dancing penguins!), and beloved piggie favourite Babe, and its sequel Pig In The City. They might seem poles apart – but it was his time on Mad Max threequel Beyond Thunderdome that first got pigs percolating in Miller’s mind.
That 1985 film was something of a porcine affair itself, with its facility that turned pig shit into fuel. “I’d eat lunch with pigs all around me,” Miller chuckles, talking to Empire for Babe’s 30 anniversary. “I came to learn how sensitive they are.” Then, with farmyard animals already on the brain,...

Hugh Jackman is more synonymous with box office success than not, but it's the streaming resurgence of a rare track record blemish of Jackman's that's turning heads this week. DreamWorks' 2012 animated fantasy film Rise of the Guardians has emerged as a global Netflix hit 13 years after its theatrical release, currently ranking third on Netflix's Global Top 10 movies with 5.4 million views and 9 million hours viewed across 41 countries.
Rise of the Guaradians centers on the titular group recruiting Jack Frost to combat Pitch Black, a villain intent on destroying children's dreams – a concept that apparently resonates more with audiences at home than in theaters. The film smacks of franchise hopes, assembling Chris Pine as Jack Frost and Jackman as the Easter Bunny, alongside Alec Baldwin, Jude Law, and Isla Fisher as other holiday and fairy tale legends.

Every month, Netflix has to purge some of its catalog and make room for new arrivals. Still, the first week of April 2025 is rough. If you wanted to catch many of the films below, you have two days left.
There is no way to binge-watch everything that is leaving. That is true even if you line up several TVs and your computer(s) next to each other and play different things at once. Don't do that because that would be weird (or would it?).

"You don't often see penguins in films about human rights abuses," Steve Coogan told Variety, and he's right. The Penguin Lessons operates like it's juggling on a tightrope walk; that's how much of a balancing act the film is. Based on the story of Tom Michel, a teacher at a boarding school over in Argentina during Isabel Perón's right-wing government ahead of the military junta and the Dirty War. The discovery of a tarred penguin leads to changes in his and his school's perspectives. The film exists somewhere between Happy Feet and Life Is Beautiful, and is grounded by Coogan's wonderful performance. Coogan and director Peter Cattaneo spoke with MovieWeb about the penguins and balancing the film's unique tone.

March has been fun for Netflix and will end with some fine additions. But be prepared. April is going to see a lot of changes. In other words, get ready to watch a lot of stuff quickly.
41 movies alone will be leaving Netflix at the beginning of next month. If you love such franchises as Rush Hour, you might want to binge-watch the first three films over the next week. Those will be leaving your favorite streamer on the first day of April.
The first three Karate Kid movies will be moving on as well. This is bad timing, as there will be a "new" Karate Kid flick coming to theaters in May. That one will star Ralph Macchio (of course) and Jackie Chan and is titled Karate Kids: Legends. The best scenario would be to see the previous films on Netflix before there is a theatrical release of a new addition to the series.

The US and Australia-based firm has backed over 100 films since its launch in 1997, including Joker, Sully, Mad Max: Fury Road, the Sherlock Holmes franchise, Happy Feet and the Matrix trilogy.
The company, which is based in both the US and Australia, had struggled to bounce back from the pandemic slump, which has hit box-office receipts, and the 2023 Hollywood writers’ strike, which delayed film productions.
More recently, its financial problems largely stemmed from an ongoing dispute with longstanding partner Warner Bros. Discovery.

Kevin Costner and Elijah Wood are two of Hollywood's most dynamic and celebrated performers, with the talented duo joining forces in 1994 to headline the poignant coming-of-age drama The War, a thought-provoking film that focuses on a Vietnam War veteran who returns to his home and family in Mississippi and struggles to overcome his crippling Ptsd and war trauma. Wood appears as Costner's headstrong son, who undergoes a major transformation himself as he tries to find meaning and purpose outside of his dreary household by building his own sanctuary in the form of a treehouse in the forest.
Though The War ultimately proved to be a box office dud and attracted underwhelming reviews from critics, moviegoers appreciated the wholesome chemistry between Costner and Wood, with many raving about the younger star's vulnerable performance and the endearing father/son bond the two shared. The little-known drama served as a major stepping stone...

It was criminal that the Best Animated Film category didn’t exist at the Oscars before 2001. Iconic films like The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Aladdin, and Mulan missed out on the golden statuette. While Beauty and the Beast became the first animated feature to be nominated for Best Picture, the absence of a dedicated Animated Feature category left a void in recognizing the artistry of animated films at the Oscars.
The creation of the award, in hindsight, inadvertently confined animated films to their own category. Following the 81st Academy Awards, cinephiles noted that no rule prevented Wall-e from being nominated for Best Picture, sparking debates on animated films’ true recognition.
At the time of the award’s introduction, Disney had cooled off, and Pixar (distributed by Disney) took the reins, dominating with creativity and innovation. Pixar has claimed 11 of the 23 Oscars for Best Animated Feature.
Today, the animated landscape is more competitive than ever.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was another critically-acclaimed installment in the long-running action franchise, but it failed to light up the box office. Still, audiences were enamored with the stunt-filled revenge story starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of Furiosa, originally played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road. The future of the Mad Max franchise was left in the air due to the prequel's theatrical performance, but it seems fans should prep themselves for another trip down the post-apocalyptic road.
During an interview with Vulture, George Miller discussed his impending plans for another Mad Max installment. The veteran filmmaker confirmed that, while he has another script ready to go, the wait for a new sequel (or prequel) could be quite extensive. He has "lots of stories" in the backburner, and not just for Mad Max. However, due to the nature of his own creative process and moviemaking in general,...

The Academy Awards have been honoring animation since 1932 when Walt Disney began a near decade-long reign over the then-newly minted best cartoon short subject category. However, in 2001, the ceremony inaugurated the best animated feature category, beginning a now-storied tradition that has helped the medium skyrocket in popularity and prestige. Sure, some folks still sideline it as children's entertainment -- including at the ceremony itself -- but so long as based god Guillermo Del Toro proclaims it as cinema, animation will live on as such.
Thanks to the category's relative infancy, not to mention its smaller pool of competitors, the majority of the now over 100 nominees are some of the best the medium has to offer. However, not every winner is a winner, if you know what we mean. Here is our definitive ranking of every best animated feature at the Oscars, from the times the Academy got it wrong to...

The incredible and mostly true story of Belle Gibson, the glorious end of Cobra Kai, the return of arguably the world’s most talked about reality show, Kate Hudson flexing her comedy muscles and Robert De Niro leading a prestige TV show are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in February.
On Feb. 5, Amy Schumer’s comedy Kinda Pregnant debuts on Netflix. Director Tyler Spindel’s movie centers on Lainy (Schumer), who wears a fake baby bump while feeling jealous of her best friend’s pregnancy and ends up meeting her perfect guy. Rounding out the cast are Jillian Bell, Will Forte, Damon Wayans Jr., Brianne Howey, Alex Moffat, Joel David Moore, Lizze Broadway, Urzila Carlson and Francis Benhamou.

Reality TV enthusiasts are in for a treat. For those who prefer a gripping thriller, Netflix will drop Apple Cider Vinegar, a new series premiering on February 6 that’s worth keeping an eye on.
In other big news, the highly popular series Cobra Kai will release its final batch of five episodes this month, marking the end of the TV series. While it’s bittersweet for fans, this isn’t the last we’ll see of Daniel Larusso, as he’s set to appear in an upcoming Karate Kid movie hitting theaters later this year.
Beyond these highlights, Netflix is also adding plenty of films and shows to its catalog.

Director George Miller is best known for the Mad Max series of films, but his singular Oscar win actually came from a different franchise altogether, Happy Feet. With Mel Gibson in the titular role, the original Mad Max debuted in 1979 to critical acclaim and a successful box office run. As a result, Miller, who also served as co-writer, joined Gibson in achieving mainstream recognition. This led to several more Mad Max movies being released across the years.
The most recent of those was Mad Max: Fury Road, which came thirty years after the Tina Turner-starring third outing, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. The movie saw Tom Hardy take over the titular role from Gibson. And he was joined by the likes of Charlize Theron as Furiosa, a character that would later receive her own prequel. Bluey fans around the world are on pins and needles for the new full-length feature film adaptation in 2027, but things are about to change. Although Bluey creator Joe Brumm is devoting all of his time and energy to make the movie great, one development has some fans biting their nails.
Along with the official announcement, it was revealed that Bluey would be getting a CG makeover for the occasion. That's not an uncommon practice for TV show characters making the transition to film, but fans might not need to be so uptight because a redesign has happened before.

Here's what Bluey's official blog says about the future update,
"The CG animated film will be produced by award-winning animation producer Amber Naismith with Richard Jeffery returning to co-direct (’Bluey’ Series 1-3). Joe Brumm will serve as executive producer, alongside Charlie Aspinwall and Daley Pearson from Ludo Studio,...

Elijah Wood starred in Shane Acker's animated feature 9 in 2009, which was largely made possible by Tim Burton. Following Wood's lead performance as Frodo Baggins in the groundbreaking The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the renowned actor appeared in several films such as Sin City, Paris, Je T'aime, and Happy Feet. Wood went on to star in the celebrated FX comedy series Wilfred and recently appeared in the second season of the Emmy-nominated series Yellowjackets.
Burton has created several notable animated movies over his career. He was a screenwriter on animated classics such as The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach and directed Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie. Burton recently directed the massively popular Netflix series Wednesday, which returns for its second season in 2025, and the highly anticipated Beetlejuice sequel, which is now streaming on HBO/Max. If it weren't for Burton's efforts with 9, the film may have never been made.

This week saw the 15th anniversary of the death of Brittany Murphy, and one of her co-stars took the occasion to remember her fondly.
Murphy died on December 20, 2009, and Katie O’Grady, who worked alongside her on her final film Something Wicked, described Murphy as being like “a little bird you wanted to be around and you wanted to help.”
O’Grady told People magazine that Murphy’s cast and crew were all concerned and mindful of Murphy’s physical and mental condition, and tried to be “soft” with her while on set. O’Grady recalled the late actress looking “frail” and noticeably “going through a hard time” while filming the movie.
And O’Grady told the magazine of Murphy: “She made moments and she created moments with everybody that she met to the best of her ability that she could with the energy that she had.”

Big things are happening in the world of Bluey this week. Yesterday, fans were told that the beloved Australian animated series is set to get its first full-length feature film in 2027. That's certainly a game-changer for the beloved blue dog, but it also comes with some "trifficult" developments as well.
Along with this major development, two other changes coming down the pipeline might not go over well with the show's immense fanbase. Along with Bluey creator Joe Brumm stepping away from his role on the animated series to focus on the film, it was also announced that the characters are being made over with a "CG" style.

After years of dominating the small screen, Bluey is making the leap to theaters. The beloved animated character's first feature film has been officially announced with plans for a global rollout in theaters in 2027.
Per BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company, Disney has acquired the theatrical film rights for Bluey, leading to the development of the franchise's first feature film. BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company today announced the first-ever Bluey movie, which will be based on the Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning animated series.
The new deal sees Disney acquiring the global theatrical rights for the film, which will land in theaters in 2027 under the Disney banner. Following the global theatrical release, the Bluey movie will stream on Disney+.
Written and directed by Bluey creator Joe Brumm, the film is a Ludo Studio production in collaboration with BBC Studios. Delivering the same charm and humor that made the television series a global phenomenon, the movie will continue the adventures of Bluey, a loveable, inexhaustible, blue heeler dog, who lives with her mum, dad and her little sister, Bingo.
“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that.

According to Gold Derby’s current combined predictions, “The Wild Robot” is the frontrunner to win Best Animated Feature at the Oscars with 10/3 odds. If it prevails, it would be just the third film from DreamWorks Animation to do so. But the movie may prove to be an even stronger contender than many are expecting.

Adapted from Peter Brown’s 2016 children’s book of the same name, “The Wild Robot” follows an intelligent robot named Roz (Lupita Nyong’o) who is shipwrecked on an island, bonds with the animals there, and cares for an orphaned baby goose (Kit Connor). The movie currently holds an impressive 98% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has so far made over $270 million at the worldwide box office.

Fans of Robin Williams will be able to sit down and enjoy two of his much-loved movies from the 1990s thanks to Mrs. Doubtfire and Jumanji joining the Tubi library. The comedy movies are among the most beloved of Williams career, and now another generation can discover his genius for themselves without having to spend a dime.
In 1993, Williams gave one of his greatest comedy performances in Mrs. Doubtfire, playing divorcee Daniel, who disguises himself as a nanny in order to be able to see his children. While there are those who will say the movie is dated, it is hard to see the film as anything other than a hilarious, and often poignant, story about the lengths a parent will go to in order to be close to their children. In contrast, 1995s Jumanji is a rollicking adventure comedy in which Williams plays Alan Parrish, a man who has...

Netflix revealed the official That Christmas trailer, which comes from Locksmith Animation (Ron’s Gone Wrong) and director Simon Otto (How to Train Your Dragon trilogy). Debuting on December 4, the film has been rated PG for thematic elements, some language, and rude humor.
That Christmas is an adaptation of the beloved children’s book series written by acclaimed BAFTA Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated writer and director Richard Curtis.
That Christmas follows a series of entwined tales about family and friends, love and loneliness, and Santa Claus making a big mistake, not to mention an enormous number of turkeys! A film of firsts, it marks Curtis’s first animation project and the directorial debut of animation veteran Otto.
The film stars Brian Cox as Santa, Fiona Shaw (Ms. Trapper), Jodie Whittaker (Mrs. Williams), and Bill Nighy (Bill) as the residents of a charming seaside town where things turn upside down one Christmas.

Mel Gibson was once no stranger to franchise filmmaking. As one of the biggest stars of the 80s and 90s, Gibson was front and center in not just Academy Award-winning movies like Braveheart but also tentpole series like Lethal Weapon and Mad Max. Unfortunately, both those franchises had dried up by the early 2000s, and when Mad Max was finally set to make its return after a series of starts and stops, Gibson was no longer welcome back.
The reasons for Mel Gibson's exile from the role of "Mad" Max Rockatansky are plentiful, even if none of those justifications were ever spoken of or addressed during 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road. There were creative considerations that went into the decision, but first and foremost was the mess Gibson had made of his professional career following a difficult stretch in his personal life in which the man's demons were brought kicking...
